Attentive to the habits and feeding of your pet. Take note: a recommendation expert.

A dog is a friend, ally, companion or brother. He is a loyal and faithful being who accompanies in a genuine way, and shows his nobility and uninteresting love. It is able to appease the worst moments or boost the best moments of our lives. Of course, it is one more member of the family.

Their care should not be wasted. Each person is responsible for their well-being and, with the economic reactivation and presence, aspects should not be forgotten so that they live in the best way.

One of the things that plague many people is hair loss on their dogs. The carpets, floors, clothes and other elements of the house monopolize them, no matter how much they are cleaned. But what to do about that? Why it happens? The veterinarian, Gabriel García, an expert on these issues and who writes weekly articles about pets in EL TIEMPO, responds and gives advice:

Something normal
The first thing to emphasize is that pet hair loss is a normal process. "It happens in humans, dogs and cats, and it is something natural. It is common for the skin to peel and for the cells to change. It is a living tissue that when it 'dies', falls off," explains García. This happens with some frequency, depending on the breed, and it usually happens several times a year.

Feeding
Food is a key factor. "It not only works so that the dog looks beautiful, but also so that its skin is healthy and diseases are avoided," he clarifies. Many people prefer to think that dogs or cats can eat everything, but the truth, according to the expert, is that the diet must be according to the breed: "Beyond the price, you have to choose what works well, review the nutritional table and see the minerals, proteins and vitamins of the food because that will influence ".

For those who give their dogs homemade food, it is important to understand that, due to the type of preparation, "the hair can look dull and the skin in other conditions. Also, when the dogs eat this type of food, do the shedding of her hair more often. "

One option that you can evaluate with the veterinarian is supplementation, because there are foods on the market that do not provide enough vitamins or minerals to the animals. It is an option that cannot be ruled out.

Hygiene
Hygiene is quite important. García explains that the moments of brushing and bathing are decisive in terms of hair care.

"Brushing depends on the breed of the dog, where it lives and the time to do it. There are those who only believe that it should brush once a week, but you have to understand that there are breeds that, due to their qualities, need to be brushed every third day ", says the expert.

It should be clarified that brushing not only serves to remove excess hair or dead hair, but "does a kind of massage on the skin that stimulates the growth of follicles and helps the hair to be stronger and healthier, especially by maintaining it without parasites or residues that can affect it. "

Keep in mind: check the types of brushes that are sold in the market and choose the one that is most convenient for your best friend.

About bathing, it is common to think that at least once a month you should bathe pets, but the truth is that this is relative and should not be normalized if the conditions of the animal are not known. "The skin of the dog has a kind of natural oils that are essential and that, if it is bathed frequently, they can be lost, causing excessive hair loss," says Gabriel García.

And he adds: "The baths should be done at least every third month, but that depends on the amount of hair the animal has and its habits. It is not the same as a dog that climbs the mountain every day and gets dirty when the one who only spends it at home. " At this point it is also key to review the type of shampoo that is applied.

Diseases
Hair loss can also be associated with a disease. If you detect anything out of the ordinary, localized sores or falls, go to the veterinarian who treats your dog to do the appropriate tests and determine what may be happening.

"As with people, some hormonal alteration can alter the skin and hair of dogs. Also, parasitic diseases, fungi, mites or fleas can affect them", says Gabriel García.

The expert recommends that "as soon as it is seen that the hair is falling excessively, scratching a lot or grooming itself too much, it is necessary to consult a doctor in time to avoid complicating the disease."
