  1. Videogame mods are a blursed creation. They're the door to many a quality-of-life tweak or straight-up fix to get some of the shoddier PC ports in shape, but they're also the home to all kinds of bizarre running gags (Thomas the Tank Engine in everything) and a sprinkling of fetish fulfillment (gestures wildly at the many NSFW Skyrim mods). We've seen developers worried about mods before: both Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi and Final Fantasy 16 director-producer Naoki Yoshida politely asked modders not to run amok with their creations on PC. There was also friction a few years ago when Judgement star and giant Japanese celebrity Takuya Kimura's agency seemed reluctant to see the games heading to PC, seemingly down to concerns around how his likeness could be used. Still, I can't think of any time a developer has straight-up cited crass mods as a reason to not port a game over at all. Until now, that is. TeamKill Media—the developer behind Code Violet, touted as a spiritual successor to Dino Crisis—posted on X to say that it wouldn't be bringing the game to PC as it didn't want any dirty modder hands tainting its creation. "For those asking us about a PC version of Code Violet… the reason we are not bringing it to PC is we do not want anyone modding vulgar versions of the main characters as well as other characters in the game," the post read. "We hold our voice actresses and actors with high regard, as well as our artistic vision for the game and story and reject any form of destroying that with sexual mods. Making a joke out of our art and possibly tarnishing the reputation of our voice actresses and actors is not worth the extra money we can make." Now TeamKill has followed up to try and defend its stance somewhat, adding in a follow-up post: "We are not against PC gamers or the PC platform. We are not against modders and some of the fun mods they make. But we are 100% against p*rnographic mods… period." Like, part of me certainly understands where the team is coming from. It's nice to declare your respect for the people working to bring your game to life and ultimately developers have a right to protect that vision. But it also feels weirdly short-sighted to proclaim that PC is the sole home of degenerates doing degenerate things to videogames. Blaming a small subsector of modding culture on your entire reason for not porting a game over feels a bit strange to me, and even its half-hearted attempt to walk things back a little still feels finger-pointy. 4. Economists have warned that the government is "on course" to miss its own Budget borrowing targets after interest rates for UK long-term borrowing rose to their highest levels this century. The official forecaster, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), will start the process of updating its forecast next month to be presented to parliament in late March. The rising cost of borrowing means "there is a significant chance that the OBR will judge that the Chancellor Rachel Reeves is on course to miss her main fiscal rule", according to Ruth Gregory from Capital Economics. The yield on the 30-year gilt reached 5.35% on Wednesday, surpassing a previous high in August 1998. Meanwhile, the yield on a 10 year bond surged on Wednesday to its highest since October 2008, to reach 4.784%. The government generally spends more than it raises in tax. To fill this gap it borrows money, but that has to be paid back - with interest. One of the ways it can borrow money is by selling financial products called bonds. A bond is a promise to pay money in the future. Most require the borrower to make regular interest payments. UK government bonds - known as "gilts" - are normally considered very safe, with little risk the money will not be repaid. Gilts are mainly bought by financial institutions in the UK and abroad, such as pension funds, investment funds, banks and insurance companies. Servicing the current national debt in the UK is forecast to take up 7% of total public spending, but that forecast was based on lower government borrowing rates. No.10 said there was "no doubt about the government's commitment to economic stability" and "meeting our fiscal rules is non-negotiable" saying that only the OBR's forecast is an accurate predication of the government's room for manoeuvre. The clear indication from the government is that although they will not hold another Budget in March, any necessary adjustment would have to come in terms of some new spending cuts. On Tuesday morning, a £2bn auction of 30 year UK government debt sold at an effective interest rate of 5.18%. The Debt Management Office, a part of Treasury, effectively paid the highest interest rates for these very long term loans that have been since 1998. Eyebrows raised over issuance The markets are raising their eyebrows about debts around the world, and in particular the level of issuance of bonds from countries such as the UK and the US, and additionally, the likelihood of sticky, above target inflation. Thirty-year debt such as this does not have a direct pass through into borrowing rates for households and companies. This type of debt is more of a specialist instrument used by pension funds. But today's auction shines a light on an uptick of borrowing rates over the past month. The more general gilt market move, has not yet significantly changed fixed mortgage rates for example. But if it continues, as is plausible, for the next month or so it will impact the OBR's new forecast. The rise in rates has affected the US and the UK more, and less so continental Europe. The tick-up in UK market rates after the Budget, initially faded by early December. But now British borrowing rates are moving up alongside US ones. Stagnant growth and sticky inflation have raised concerns about so-called "stagflation". Markets are starting to question the inflationary impacts of incoming President Donald Trump's trade and tax policies. So while this is not a crisis, it is a new reality. Markets are questioning if the UK really can sustain higher growth and restrained inflation. And those questions are now occurring against the backdrop of the Trump trade tumult affecting global markets for borrowing. It's a bumpy start to 2025. 5. Temperatures across the county have continued to plummet this week, as weather warnings and flurries of snow brought with them a combined sense of chaos and calm. Gritters have been working late into the night to keep roads safe, while exotic animals frolicked through the freshly-fallen powdered snow. Meanwhile, photographers captured the county's landmarks in a state of quiet tranquillity, surrounded by twinkling frost and pastel skies. Some of Longleat Safari Park's residents enjoyed the cold snap this week. Zebras were spotted playing in the snow, while the rare Amur tigers cozied up together as temperatures across the county plunged into minus figures. Frosty scenes were captured as the sun rose above Stonehenge on Thursday. The monolithic monument, built to align with the sun on the solstices, providing a spellbinding spectacle. Wiltshire Council was forced to deploy gritters as temperatures dipped to -3C overnight this week, leading to challenging driving conditions. It was also quick to activate its Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP) which ensures that anyone sleeping on the streets is offered a roomwhen temperatures dip below zero. Frigid temperatures cast Salisbury Cathedral, the icy waters of the River Avon, and the surrounding meadows as the idyllic muse for this photographer. The green pastures of Wexcombe Down in Wiltshire were buried under a thick blanket of snow on Wednesday. They were pictured thawing out the following morning, after a break in the clouds brought with it stunning blue skies and milder temperatures. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd757jw778jo
  6. This was the hashtag photographer Ken Saito used on his Tokyo Auto Salon Instagram post. No caption. While the sea of black suits and middle-aged men creates an austere atmosphere at TAS, there are always pockets of madness. But is that madness fading? I’m not a big fan of crowds at the best of times, so the po[CENSORED]tion of a small town crammed into the narrow alleyways between booths at the Makuhari Messe is never the most inviting. But I push myself to battle the sea of people, determined to hunt down the Tokyo Auto Salon oddities. Link: https://www.speedhunters.com/2025/01/the-not-so-weird-wacky-cars-of-tokyo-auto-salon-2025/
  7. A quirk of fate meant Graham Potter's last game in management was a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa. It cost him his job at Chelsea in April 2023, as the Blues acted less than 24 hours later to end his brief Stamford Bridge reign. Almost two years later the 49-year-old returned to the dugout to suffer another loss to Villa, this time in the FA Cup, in his first game as West Ham boss. At his Thursday unveiling, he spoke about accepting both the successes and the setbacks, his spell at Chelsea a perfect example. Potter said the Hammers felt like the "right one" after previously coming close to the jobs at Ajax and Leicester. He also said he was now well rested - but, after Friday's game at a freezing Villa Park, there is likely to be a little frustration. Lucas Paqueta's goal, during the Hammers' bright start, had the new manager celebrating on the sidelines just nine minutes in. At full-time, however, he was locked in conversation with assistant manager Bruno Satler on the touchline after Villa's comeback had knocked out his new side. "The emotions were excitement," said Potter when he was asked how he felt before the game at his post-match news conference. "Friday night, Villa Park, full house, 6,500 West Ham fans who were amazing. "Our performance gave me a lot of encouragement, the way the players tried to do what we asked them to do. We're just disappointed now because we're out and wanted to go through. "We just try to get the team into a good shape. The talent is there but it's just about trying to get the team together as a collective. That's what we're trying to do." After the final whistle, he walked over to salute the travelling fans who will be hoping Potter will deliver the style and substance they are demanding It is something Julen Lopetegui was unable to do in his six months in charge and Potter becomes the club's fifth manager in nine and a half years, counting David Moyes' two spells. 8. Free three-month courses to help people with health conditions are on offer to islanders in Jersey. Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, a non-profit organisation, said it had launched the courses to help people manage - and sometimes reverse - metabolic syndrome. It is the name for a group of health problems - such as being overweight and having high blood pressure - that can put you at risk of type 2 diabetes or effect heart or blood vessels. Dr Jo Darwood, GP and director at Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, said the courses were "all about prevention and empowerment". She added: "By addressing the root causes of metabolic syndrome, we aim to help people take control of their health, reduce dependence on medication and live longer, healthier lives." It has been funded by a grant from Jersey Community Foundation. Organisers said it provided practical ways to improve health through lifestyle changes such as better nutrition, exercise and stress management. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4glkjwpk02o
  9. Warning: This story contains descriptions of sexual abuse It was 20:25 on a Monday evening in November 2020 when Caroline Darian got the call that changed everything. On the other end of the phone was her mother, Gisèle Pelicot. "She announced to me that she discovered that morning that [my father] Dominique had been drugging her for about 10 years so that different men could rape her," Darian recalls in an exclusive interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme's Emma Barnett. "At that moment, I lost what was a normal life," says Darian, now 46. "I remember I shouted, I cried, I even insulted him," she says. "It was like an earthquake. A tsunami." Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in jail at the end of a historic three-and-a-half month trial in December. More than four years later, Darian says that her father "should die in prison". Fifty men who Dominique Pelicot recruited online to come rape and sexually assault his unconscious wife Gisèle were also sent to jail. He was caught by police after upskirting in a supermarket, leading investigators to look closer at him. On this seemingly innocuous retired grandfather's laptop and phones, they found thousands of videos and photos of his wife Gisèle, clearly unconscious, being raped by strangers. On top of pushing issues of rape and gender violence into the spotlight, the trial also highlighted the little-known issue of chemical submission - drug-facilitated assault. Caroline Darian has made it her life's struggle to fight chemical submission, which is thought to be under-reported as the majority of victims don't have any recollection of the assaults and may not even realise they were drugged. Darian wants abused women's voices to be heard In the days that followed Gisèle's fateful phone call, Darian and her brothers, Florian and David, travelled to the south of France where their parents had been living to support their mother as she absorbed the news that - as Darian now puts it - her husband was "one of the worst sexual predators of the last 20 or 30 years". Soon afterwards, Darian herself was called in by police - and her world shattered again. She was shown two photos they found on her father's laptop. They showed an unconscious woman lying on a bed, wearing only a T-shirt and underwear. At first, she couldn't tell the woman was her. "I lived a dissociation effect. I had difficulties recognising myself from the start," she says. "Then the police officer said: 'Look, you have the same brown mark on your cheek... it's you.' I looked at those two photos differently then... I was laying on my left side like my mother, in all her pictures." Gisèle Pelicot: How an ordinary woman shook attitudes to rape in France Who is Dominque Pelicot? Pelicot family torn apart Darian says she is convinced her father abused and raped her too - something he has always denied, although he has offered conflicting explanations for the photos. "I know that he drugged me, probably for sexual abuse. But I don't have any evidence," she says. Unlike her mother's case, there is no proof of what Pelicot may have done to Darian. "And that's the case for how many victims? They are not believed because there's no evidence. They're not listened to, not supported," she says. Soon after her father's crimes came to light, Darian wrote a book. I'll Never Call Him Dad Again explores her family's trauma. It also delves deeper into the issue of chemical submission, in which the drugs typically used "come from the family's medicine cabinet". "Painkillers, sedatives. It's medication," Darian says. As is the case for almost half of victims of chemical submission, she knew her abuser: the danger, she says, "is coming from the inside." She says that in the midst of the trauma of finding out she had been raped more than 200 times by different people, her mother Gisèle found it difficult to accept that her husband may have also assaulted their daughter. "For a mum it's difficult to integrate that all in one go," she says. Yet when Gisèle decided to open up the trial to the public and the media so as to expose what had been done to her by her husband and dozens of men, mother and daughter were in agreement: "I knew we went through something... horrible, but that we had to go through it with dignity and strength.. Now, Darian needs to understand how to live knowing she is the daughter of both the torturer and the victim - something she calls "a terrible burden". She is now unable to think back to her childhood with the man she calls Dominique, only occasionally slipping back into the habit of referring to him as her father. "When I look back I don't really remember the father that I thought he was. I look straight to the criminal, the sexual criminal he is," she says. "But I have his DNA and the main reason why I am so engaged for invisible victims is also for me a way to put a real distance with this guy," she tells Emma Barnett. "I am totally different from Dominique." Darian adds she doesn't know whether her father was a "monster," as some have called him. "He knew perfectly well what he did, and he's not sick," she says. "He is a dangerous man. There is no way he can get out. No way." It will be years before Dominique Pelicot, 72, is eligible for parole, so it is possible he will never see his family again. Meanwhile, the Pelicots are rebuilding themselves. Gisèle, Darian said, was exhausted from the trial, but also "recovering... She is doing well". As for Darian, the only question she is interested in now is to raise awareness of chemical submission - and to better educate children on sexual abuse. She derives strength from her husband, her brothers and her 10-year-old - her "lovely son", she says with a smile, her voice full of affection. The events that were unleashed on that November day made her who she is today, Darian says. Now, this woman whose life was wrecked by a tsunami on a November night is trying to only look ahead. 11. In an interesting turn of events, perhaps in an effort to increase the pressure on Windows 10 users to upgrade, Microsoft has issued a vague suggestion that the free upgrade to Windows 11 might expire, possibly at the same time support runs out for the older OS. Neowin noticed that Microsoft has penned a blog post which advises Windows 10 users that they need to carefully mull their options considering that support is discontinued on October 14, 2025. And naturally, one of those choices is to upgrade to Windows 11 (another is to pay for an extended program of updates for a year, an option that’s not been available to consumers in the past, just businesses). At any rate, the key point is the title of the post, which is: “Free Upgrade to Windows 11 (For a Limited Time Only).” Now, this is interesting, because as far as we’re aware, Microsoft has never specifically mentioned that the free upgrade to Windows 11 has a time limit on it. One way you could read this title, then, is that there is indeed an expiry date for the offer, which would presumably be when Windows 10 support finishes – which is the hint imparted here, given the subject of the blog post. Analysis: Would Microsoft really do this? The question this throws up is: will Windows 11 no longer be free when Windows 10 hits End of Life? Well, we shouldn’t get carried away here, that’s for sure, as it’s notable that the only mentioned of ‘limited time’ is in the headline, and there’s no reference to this anywhere else in the article. You’d expect it to be clarified somewhere, after all, so perhaps it’s just a throwaway comment of sorts. That said, this feels like some kind of a hint being dropped, and the official stance on the freebie offer, as outlined by Microsoft in the FAQ for the ‘How to get Windows 11’ portal is as follows: “The free upgrade offer does not have a specific end date for eligible systems. However, Microsoft reserves the right to eventually end support for the free offer.” No one has ever taken that second sentence all that seriously, and it’s been regarded as just part of the usual clauses and embellishments that can be added by companies in a ‘just in case’ kind of fashion. However, perhaps Microsoft will actually exercise that right when Windows 10 shuffles off its mortal coil later this year. It’s far from unthinkable. While we can envisage such a future, there remains a pressing concern for Microsoft – Windows 11 adoption has been painfully slow. And ultimately, the software giant still wants people to make the move to Windows 11, so ditching the free offer would work against that. Or, perhaps more to the point, if the freebie upgrade is officially canned come October 2025, Microsoft might still leave loopholes open that allow folks to step up to Windows 11 free of charge. Just as happened with Windows 10 when Microsoft ended the free upgrade there, which was only supposed to be good for a year, but was left available for a long, long time after that period had expired. It’s my feeling this is likely a move by Microsoft to help persuade fence-sitters to get on with it and upgrade to Windows 11, which, to be fair, at this point they should be doing anyway. Overall, I’m not convinced there’s any real teeth to the very vague threat aired here, but I could of course be wrong. 12. Our RAM benchmark hierarchy assists you in locating the fastest DDR5 and DDR4 memory kits for your system. People frequently underestimate RAM (Random Access Memory), yet it is among the most vital hardware components. Choosing the appropriate or inappropriate memory kit can significantly influence your system's performance in gaming, productivity, and, if insufficient, overall sluggishness. Remember, consult our Best RAM list for the best memory deals. Companies regularly release new memory kits with different speeds, timings, capacities, and ranks, making sifting through seemingly endless models surprisingly time-consuming. Our RAM benchmark hierarchy aims to provide a simple database that ranks the best memory kits based on pure performance. We use a geometric mean of our memory benchmarking results to keep the ranking objective and discard the intangibles, like aesthetics and overclocking headroom. We've got those details in the individual RAM reviews. Furthermore, we suspect many of you would value performance over anything else. However, the geometric means don't always tell the whole story: If you're looking for performance in a specific workload or gaming, we recommend looking at the full review of the memory kit you have in mind. The score results originate from the geometric mean from our RAM benchmark suite, which consists of scripted and real-world tests. They include Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Lightroom, Cinebench 2024, Corona 12 benchmark, Blender 4.0 benchmark, V-Ray 6 benchmark, 7-Zip compression and decompression, HandBrake x264 and x265 conversion, LuxMark v4, Windows AI inference, and Y-Cruncher. For simplicity, we've separated the memory kits into different categories according to their densities. Then, we ranked the memory kits for each capacity from best to worst for both Intel and AMD systems. The score in our hierarchy might vary somewhat from the geometric mean indicated in the individual review. This difference arises as we aim to deliver results based on the latest and most relevant Intel and AMD platforms. We retest each memory kit to ensure that the metrics in the table are as current as possible. We conduct retests when there are significant updates to either of our testing systems, including new processors, motherboards, graphics cards, or firmware revisions. Memory pricing is very volatile. We've restrained ourselves from providing a price-to-performance value since it only captures the pricing for one static moment, and memory pricing fluctuates far too much. So, while you can see up-to-date pricing in each table below, the performance measurements don't consider the price tag. If you're torn between two specific kits, you can easily compare the choices by calculating the real-time pricing divided by the geometric mean. Ideally, you'll aim for the lowest value, as a lower figure indicates better value for your money. Link: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/ram-benchmark-hierarchy
