Be it climate change conversations, pollution worries or the problem of greenhouse gases, it all points to a global crisis. And like charity, becoming an eco-warrior starts at home. Confused? Your gadgets at home contribute to carbon emissions. However, that doesn’t mean you have to make do without them. Low-carbon emission technology is the beacon of hope, guiding us towards a greener, more sustainable future. https://www.indiatoday.in/india-today-insight/story/greener-home-gadgets-that-burden-the-earth-a-tad-less-2469117-2023-11-29

"While this attack pattern is not new, incidents involving a DJVU variant that appends the .xaro extension to affected files and demanding ransom for a decryptor have been observed infecting systems alongside a host of various commodity loaders and infostealers," Cybereason security researcher Ralph Villanueva said. The new variant has been codenamed Xaro by the American cybersecurity firm. DJVU, in itself, is a variant of the STOP ransomware, typically arrives on the scene masquerading as legitimate services or applications. It's also delivered as a payload of SmokeLoader. A significant aspect of DJVU attacks is the deployment of additional malware, such as information stealers (e.g., RedLine Stealer and Vidar), making them more damaging in nature. In the latest attack chain documented by Cybereason, Xaro is propagated as an archive file from a dubious source that masquerades as a site offering legitimate freeware. Opening the archive file leads to the execution of a supposed installer binary for a PDF writing software called CutePDF that, in reality, is a pay-per-install malware downloader service known as PrivateLoader. PrivateLoader, for its part, establishes contact with a command-and-control (C2) server to fetch a wide range of stealer and loader malware families like RedLine Stealer, Vidar, Lumma Stealer, Amadey, SmokeLoader, Nymaim, GCleaner, XMRig, and Fabookie, in addition to dropping Xaro. "This shotgun-approach to the download and execution of commodity malware is commonly observed in PrivateLoader infections originating from suspicious freeware or cracked software sites," Villanueva explained. The goal appears to be to gather and exfiltrate sensitive information for double extortion as well as ensure the success of the attack even if one of the payloads gets blocked by security software. Xaro, besides spawning an instance of the Vidar infostealer, is capable of encrypting files in the infected host, before dropping a ransom note, urging the victim to get in touch with the threat actor to pay $980 for the private key and the decryptor tool, a price that drops by 50% to $490 if approached within 72 hours. If anything, the activity illustrates the risks involved with downloading freeware from untrusted sources. Last month, Sucuri detailed another campaign called FakeUpdateRU wherein visitors to compromised websites are served bogus browser update notices to deliver RedLine Stealer. "Threat actors are known to favor freeware masquerading as a way to covertly deploy malicious code," Villanueva said. "The speed and breadth of impact on infected machines should be carefully understood by enterprise networks looking to defend themselves and their data." https://thehackernews.com/2023/11/djvu-ransomwares-latest-variant-xaro.html

Update: Looks like Ubisoft's given up trying to keep this one quiet. In a post on Twitter, the company threw in the towel and admitted it has a 20th anniversary remaster of BG&E on the way, with more info to come in early 2024. The company also said that the build that went out to Ubisoft+ subscribers as part of this leak "is not indicative of the final game," so there's some hope for those of us put off by those dodgy screenshots making the rounds. For years, Ubisoft has had one, single job: Not releasing Beyond Good and Evil games. To its credit, it's done the work with aplomb for a good long while now. Sure, sometimes we'll get some fanciful BG&E 2 trailer, a LinkedIn bio will change, or Joseph Gordon-Levitt will appear, but the studio's fundamental principle of not releasing a game in this series has never wavered. Until yesterday. A few months after the ESRB leaked that Ubisoft was working on some kind of new version of the first Beyond Good and Evil for all modern platforms, achievement-tracking sites caught wind of Xbox cheevos for a Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition. That was soon followed up by the sudden appearance of an Xbox store listing (now taken down) for the game, which was itself followed up by reports of Ubisoft+ subscribers being able to download and play it.All of which, it seems, occurred entirely without Ubisoft willing it, since the relevant store page has been taken down and 30 minutes of gameplay capture uploaded to YouTube has been erased by a Ubisoft copyright claim.Of course, this is the internet, so Ubisoft is very much trying to slam shut a stable door after the horse has bolted, and screenshots and clips of the offending material continue to circulate. Having seen the gameplay capture myself (don't tell Yves), I can tell you that, yup, it sure looks like a remastered Beyond Good and Evil. Jade looks like she controls how she controlled back in 2003, albeit with higher-resolution textures and some nicer lighting tech. Besides that, before the listing went down the description for BG&E 20th Anniversary Edition said (via Wario64) it would come in "4K, 60 fps with improved graphics, controls, and audio, along with brand-new autosave and cross-save features," along with an opportunity to "discover more about Jade’s past in a new treasure hunt throughout Hillys," which sounds like a BG&E 2 tie-in to me. It looks good from what I saw, at least in motion, but there are some screenshots circulating online that make some aspects of the remaster look a little bit ropey. Those could just be screengrabs taken at inopportune moments, or they might signify some deeper problem with the remaster's approach. We'll only know when the thing comes out. Again. But on purpose this time. https://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-accidentally-releases-beyond-good-and-evil-remaster-remembers-it-doesnt-do-that-sort-of-thing-attempts-to-scrub-all-trace-from-the-internet/

US chipmaker Micron Technology on Saturday organised a groundbreaking ceremony at the Sanand industrial area of Gujarat to flag off the construction of the new semiconductor testing and packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The US chipmaker has tied with Tata Projects for the facility, which is slated to be built with a $2.75-billion investment in the first phase. The company also said it has started the recruitment process for the new plant.PM Narendra Modi signed the agreement with Micron during his US visit on June 22. The semiconductor firm will be investing $825 million in Gujarat over a period of seven years to construct the facility which will come up in two phases. The combined investment of $2.75 billion is projected to create around 5,000 direct jobs and offer 15,000 community job opportunities over the next five years. “This new manufacturing site will be an invaluable addition to Micron’s existing global assembly and test footprint. Micron selected Tata Projects to construct our new facility,” said Gursharan Singh, senior vice-president, Micron Technology while speaking at the event at Sanand. A formal agreement was signed between Micron and Tata Projects during the ceremony.“Our new site of 1.4 million square feet facility including 500,000 square feet of clean room is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. We expect to operationalise the facility by then,” he added. About 50 per cent of the total cost of setting up this facility will be borne by the central government, while 20 per cent of the cost will be given in the form of various reliefs by the state government. The Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) of the company is being set up on a 93 acre land in Sanand GIDC-II industrial estate. “Micron expects Phase-2 of the project which will include construction of a facility similar to that of Phase-1. Micron’s investment will be USD 825 million over the two phases of the project and we will create 5,000 new direct jobs here in Sanand and 15,000 community jobs over the next several jobs,” Singh told the audience where Union minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and his colleague Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel were presentThe company said the project encompasses the design and construction of a first-of-its-kind DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and NAND (non-volatile flash memory) assembly and test facility in India. Tata Projects aims to use modern construction methods and techniques involving integrated EPC delivery through 4D BIM and hybrid modular accelerated construction, it added. According to a statement issued by the company, the Sanand factory will be designed in accordance with LEED Gold Standards of the Green Building Council and will also integrate advanced water-saving technologies. "Today we are doing bhoomi pujan within 90 days. This is the speed of a double-engine sarkaar," Vaishnaw added, referring to the BJP governments at the Centre and state working together. MoS for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said after the announcement of the semiconductor vision by the PM and the planned investment of Rs 76,000 crore to catalyse and build India's semicon ecosystem, much progress had been made in the past 18 months. "This is a big milestone in India's roadmap and growth as a Semiconductor Nation," Chandrasekhar said. It is a “decadal opportunity” that will also see growth and investment in the complex supply chain needed to support a semiconductor ecosystem, he added, and India is globally becoming a trusted partner.“For the digital economy's target of being 20 per cent of GDP in the coming years, tomorrow’s ground-breaking represents a big milestone,” he said. “We will achieve in the next ten years what countries to our north have taken 20-25 years and spent $200 billion and not succeeded.” Meanwhile, Union Minister of Railways Vaishnaw announced a "world-class" train between the industrial hub of Sanand and Ahmedabad. https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/micron-technology-signs-deal-with-tata-projects-to-build-new-facility-in-sanand-starts-hiring-process-399451-2023-09-23

Black Friday is now but a wistful memory of spectacular deals now dearly departed. Actually, it isn't. Cyber Monday is keeping the good time deals rollin', including gaming monitors. So far this deal season, we've seen some outstanding offers on everything from high-refresh 4K panels to our favorite 34-inch ultrawide form factor and from OLED models to big old TVs. A monitor is, of course, one of the best long-term buys you can make for your PC. While monitor technology does progress, it's usually not like a GPU where next year's model could make the pixel pumper currently in your PC instantly seem like very old news. A good gaming monitor today will still be a good gaming monitor next year. And the year after that, too. Right now, our favorite form factor is 34-inch ultrawide with 3,440 by 1,440 pixels. Plus at least 144Hz. Happily, prices kick off at $250 among our current deals. We also retain a soft spot for plain old 1440p and 27 inches, and prices in that category start even lower, from $170 in fact. Of course, if you've got a bigger budget, then a whole world of OLED and big screen opportunities open up, but for a lot less cash than is normally the case. We'll carry on curating the best Cyber Monday PC gaming deals all the way through the sales season. Below is a constantly curated list of the best gaming monitor deals which we'll keep updating as we go through Cyber Monday and beyond. And when we're not at it, our sleepless deal bots are always scou https://www.pcgamer.com/live/news/cyber-monday-gaming-monitor-deals-live-now/

In October of last year, a remake of Silent Hill 2 was announced. It's been over a year since, and news of how the project's coming along has been as quiet and as foggy as the titular town of Silent Hill itself. These development draw-distance blues came to a head on Twitter last week when the studio, after being asked when they could expect some news, bluntly replied that it's Konami's job to handle that sort of thing.Reading between the lines, you might see some frustration there. But I'm willing to take it at face value, especially since Bloober Team doesn't hail from Konami itself—Silent Hill games are all partner projects, since the in-house studio "Team Silent" no longer exists. Still, Bloober's CEO has some faith, saying Konami "knows what [it's doing]."The recent disasters of Silent Hill: Ascension has created an atmosphere of doubt, though. In fairness, Konami's weird discount chatroom experiment has been made by a completely different set of devs. Bloober has the chops to pull a remake off, making a game we gave a 90 in our Layers of Fear review. Still, there's enough anxiety that Bloober Team felt the need to make a second statement this week.Bloober confirms that the project's development is "progressing smoothly and in accordance to our schedule", though it reiterates—in a less matter-of-fact way—that Konami is still responsible for sharing any further details. "We kindly ask for a bit more patience. Once Konami, as the game's publisher, shares more information, we are confident that the wait will be worthwhile." Bloober has some big shoes to fill with the remake—especially considering the series' recent history. The devs there have my sympathy. I do, however, feel like this industry habit of dropping a cryptic teaser months before you're ready to show anything else is starting to exhaust fans.Harvey's history with games started when he first begged his parents for a World of Warcraft subscription aged 12, though he's since been cursed with Final Fantasy 14-brain and a huge crush on G'raha Tia. He made his start as a freelancer, writing for websites like Techradar, The Escapist, Dicebreaker, The Gamer, Into the Spine—and of course, PC Gamer. He'll sink his teeth into anything that looks interesting, though he has a soft spot for RPGs, soulslikes, roguelikes, deckbuilders, MMOs, and weird indie titles. He also plays a shelf load of TTRPGs in his offline time. Don't ask him what his favourite system is, he has too many. https://www.pcgamer.com/silent-hill-2-remake-devs-try-to-calm-down-fans-saying-for-the-second-time-that-its-on-konami-to-share-anything-we-kindly-ask-for-a-bit-more-patience/

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A state lawmaker who is helping lead the effort to impeach Philadelphia’s elected prosecutor on Tuesday became the newest candidate for Pennsylvania attorney general, an office that played a critical role in court defending Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the presidential battleground. Rep. Craig Williams, a Republican who represents part of suburban Philadelphia, has said for months that he planned to run for the state’s top law enforcement office in 2024. Williams, a former federal prosecutor and former U.S. Marine Corps pilot and prosecutor, is the third Republican to declare his candidacy. In an announcement video, Williams says, “I’m running for attorney general because I know how to deal with violence. ... I fought the bad guys on the battlefield and I beat them in the courtroom.”Democrats are facing a five-way primary for an office that will be open after next year. Williams is a second-term member of the state House who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008, losing by 20 percentage points to then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak. He spent about a decade as a lawyer for Philadelphia-area electric and gas utility Peco Energy Co., an Exelon Corp. subsidiary, before running for the Legislature. As a freshman lawmaker, he became one of two House Republicans tapped to lead the impeachment of Philadelphia’s progressive district attorney, Larry Krasner. The process is tied up in court, with Krasner challenging it as a political impeachment based on policy disagreements, not credible evidence of wrongdoing in office. Williams, 58, born in Alabama, got his law degree at the University of Florida. The attorney general’s office has a budget of about $140 million annually and plays a prominent role in arresting drug traffickers, fighting gun trafficking, defending state laws in court and protecting consumers from predatory practices. The office also defended the integrity of Pennsylvania’s 2020 presidential election against repeated attempts to overturn it in state and federal courts by Donald Trump’s campaign and Republican allies. The two other Republicans who have announced their candidacies are York County District Attorney Dave Sunday and former federal prosecutor Katayoun Copeland. The Democrats running are Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer, state Rep. Jared Solomon of Philadelphia, former state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale, former federal prosecutor Joe Kahn and Keir Bradford-Grey, the former head of Philadelphia’s and Montgomery County’s public defense lawyers. No Republican has been elected attorney general since 2008. https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-attorney-general-election-campaign-craig-williams-67d34e58c67b75e48bc10596f719cb87

Mr Dix, an Australian underground expert summoned as a consultant by the Indian government, has been spending days and nights outside an under-construction road tunnel in Uttarakhand, where 41 workers have been trapped for more than a fortnight now. The Silkyara tunnel is part of a $1.5bn (£1.19bn), 890km-long flagship Char Dham project connecting key Hindu pilgrim sites through two-lane paved roads in the Himalayan state. Efforts to clear the 60m blockage and create an exit passage for trapped workers using crawl-out pipes, have faced numerous roadblocks, including the breakdown of the main drilling machine. "I think this is the toughest [operation] not purely for technical reasons. This is tough because the stakes are very high. No one has been injured and we have to make sure every person inside comes out fine," Mr Dix told me. Things can get tricky, Mr Dix reckons. Even what looks like a straightforward fix of using a vertical drill or pipes to bore into the tunnel from the top has hurdles. Instability is a concern in a young and changing mountain topography. There's a gamble with potential water sources above the tunnel - messing with them could leading to flooding, putting both rescuers and the trapped men at risk. Bernard Gruppe, a German-Austrian engineering consultancy hired by the Indian company building the tunnel, had said in August that since "the start of tunnel driving, the geological conditions have proved to be more challenging than predicted in the tender document". It is not clear why an "escape passage" approved for the tunnel in 2018 had not been built until the time when the tunnel collapsed. To grasp the magnitude of the crisis, it's important to understand its location - the Himalayas. The Himalayas are the world's youngest mountain range, home to the highest peaks, formed some 45 million years ago as a result of the collision and folding of two continental plates. The upward climb of the Himalayas comes with seismic activity - in other words, it's an earthquake-prone region. Geologists say many of the rocks in the northern Himalayas where Uttarakhand is located are sedimentary rocks - phyllite, shale, limestone, quartzite - which form when loose sediments of the Earth's surface become compressed and bond together. "The problem in this region is that you have varied types of rocks with different strength. Some are really soft, some are more hardened. The soft rocks crumble. This makes the region inherently unstable," CP Rajendran, a well-known geologist, told me. To make sense of this, understanding the wider significance of the region hosting the Char Dham project, spanning four districts of Uttarakhand, is essential. This region, the birthplace of the Ganges and its major tributaries, sustains over 600 million Indians with water and food. The landscape is dotted with forests, glaciers, and water springs. Crucially, India's climate is influenced by this area, as its topsoil serves as a significant carbon sink - naturally absorbing and storing carbon dioxide to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions. It is here the Char Dham highway project plans to widen the existing highways to double-lane paved shoulder ones with some 16 bypasses, realignments and tunnels, 15 flyovers and more than 100 small bridges. There are two main road tunnels in the project: the Silkyara tunnel and a shorter 400 metre tunnel in Chamba. Apart from that, there are tunnels being bored for railways and hydropower, including a dozen over 110km (68 miles) for a 125km railway link. Then there are tunnels for a number of hydropower projects - there are 33 such state-run hydro projects in operation, and another 14 being built, according to official documents. "There has been an intensification of tunnel work in the last 15-20 years", Hemant Dhyani, an environmentalist, told me. "These mountains are not built for such massive building of infrastructure." According to official data, more than 1,000 landslides have hit Uttarakhand, killing more than 48 people so far this year - much of it has been attributed to excessive monsoon rains. Earlier this year cracks developed in hundreds of homes and many streets in Joshimath, a small town in the state. Research indicates that the topsoil in the Himalayas is eroding at three times the national average, leading to the depletion of the region's carbon sink. In 2013, the town of Kedarnath was hit by devastating floods - triggered by heavy monsoon rains - in which thousands of people were swept away. Mr Dhyani, a former member of the Supreme Court-appointed expert committee, says the committee's suggestion to construct a narrower tunnel was disregarded, resulting in heightened blasting activities and an elevated risk of collapse. He believes environmental risk assessments were neglected, as tunnels were exempted due to the project's segmentation into sections of less than 100km each. There are contrasting views as well. Manoj Garnayak, an underground construction expert, told a newspaper that that tunnels, if properly executed, do not harm the mountain or hill ecology. He told the Indian Express that tunnel-building technology, dating back about 200 years, is not inherently hazardous - and proper execution involves thorough investigation of the rock intended for tunnel construction, assessing its fragility and solidity. Environmentalists, such as Mr Dhyani, advocate for a "terrain-specific approach" in all tunnel construction projects, emphasising the unpredictable reactions of geology in different regions. Infrastructure development in the Himalayas should prioritise being "disaster and climate-resilient". Also, authorities should engage with a broader range of stakeholders to formulate improved policies for environmentally fragile pilgrimage sites, they say. Authorities now admit that timelines provided for the rescue of 41 men could change due to "technical glitches, the challenging Himalayan terrain, and unforeseen emergencies". This, for a road, which was designed to offer all-weather connectivity, reducing the sometimes snow-affected stretch from 25.6km to 4.5km and slashing travel time from the current 50 minutes to a mere five minutes. Ironically, the prolonged wait to rescue the trapped workers building the road is turning out to be a distressing ordeal. "This is a serious wake up call for all of us," says Mr Dhyani. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-67529337

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, who is running for president and challenging Joe Biden in the primary, announced Friday he will not seek reelection to Congress in 2024. “My journey to public service began the morning after the 2016 election, when I faced the reality that democracy requires participation - not observation,” the Minnesota congressman said in a statement. “Seven years have passed, each presenting historic opportunities to practice a brand of optimistic politics that repairs relationships and improves people’s lives. We have met those moments, and after three terms it is time to pass the torch,” he added. While Phillips has been effusive in his praise for Biden, the 54-year-old also says Democrats need younger voices to avoid a scenario where Trump wins another election next fall. https://apnews.com/article/dean-phillips-congress-reelection-president-88ad9a540b6a78a1af4acc5ca01c7f85

Thinking it's time to ditch gas and go electric? It's a good idea, but it's important to have a budget in mind because depending on the model you choose, you'll see massive differences in price. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt starts at just $26,500, but this low-priced entry-level EV, and its EUV hatchback counterpart, will be discontinued after the 2023 model year. Prices can soar to well over $100,000 for an electric SUV, pickup or high-performance luxury car. Though most electric vehicles (EVs) are still more expensive than comparable gasoline-powered models, the difference is getting smaller, year by year. When you consider the cost of fuel, maintenance and purchase incentives, the price differences are reduced or eliminated. Most electric cars and SUVs still come with federal, state, local and utility buying incentives, thanks in part to provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. With increasing ranges and lower relative costs, today's EVs are no longer just niche vehicles. There are now models in nearly every vehicle class, from compact hatchbacks to sports cars to full-size pickup trucks. In this guide, we'll look at the prices of the EVs you can either buy today or will be able to purchase soon. Note that some of the models listed aren't yet available for sale or are sold out for the foreseeable future and thus may be subject to additional dealer markups – in other words, dealers might charge extra to take advantage of limited inventory. Not every EV is available for purchase or lease in every state. In some cases, the prices shown are from manufacturers' product announcements and may not match the final pricing when the vehicle goes on sale. The range figures shown come from the EPA or automakers, if official numbers are not available. Electric Cars These mainstream electric car models are the lowest-priced electric cars you can buy today. With the exception of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Hyundai Ioniq 6, they have shorter ranges than you'll find in other EV classes.Luxury electric cars typically have higher performance and, in many cases, greater range than their mainstream counterparts. They also have higher price tags, with some models going for well over $100,000. While traditional automakers are making a growing number of luxury electric cars, there are some new companies in the game, including Lucid and Polestar. https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/advice/electric-car-prices
