  4. Nearly two years after he signed documents attempting to overturn Donald Trump's 2020 loss in Nevada, Jim Hindle thanked everyone gathered in a historic Nevada boomtown's commission chambers and asked them to bear with him while he learned how to oversee elections in rural Storey County. Hindle was another replacement in what was a revolving door of county election officials across Nevada as the 2022 midterms approached. He had just unseated the interim clerk, who had stepped in after the prior clerk resigned. But Hindle's tenure in the heavily Republican county is part of a trend across battleground states where fake electors have retained influence over elections heading into 2024. He is among six Republicans who were indicted this month by Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford for their alleged roles in attempting to overturn the election outcome in the swing state, which Democrat Joe Biden carried by more than 33,000 votes over the GOP president. Hindle and the others, who are scheduled to be arraigned Monday, coordinated with Trump’s team directly, according to transcripts of testimony before the U.S. House committee that investigated the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Hindle told The Associated Press he will continue running local elections despite the charges. He declined to comment further. Wisconsin, Arizona and Pennsylvania also have fake electors who are involved in the 2024 election. 5. In 2023, Maruti Suzuki introduced several captivating vehicles in the Indian market. Among these were the Fronx crossover, built on the Baleno platform, the highly anticipated Jimny SUV, and the premium MPV called Invicto, which draws inspiration from the Toyota Innova Hycross. The company has been actively striving to secure a significant portion of the rapidly expanding Indian utility vehicle market. During the February 2023 Auto Expo, Maruti Suzuki unveiled the eVX electric SUV concept, providing a glimpse of their upcoming all-electric SUV. Suzuki then presented an enhanced version of the concept at the Japan Mobility Show later in the year. The production version of the eVX is anticipated to be revealed in 2024. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is set to introduce the next generation Swift in 2024, with the model having been unveiled a few months prior at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. Anticipated to hit the Indian market in 2024, Maruti Suzuki is set to introduce the latest iteration of the Swift hatchback. It is constructed on a newly developed platform exclusively designed for electric vehicles and boasts a 60 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 550 kilometres on a single charge. https://www.livemint.com/auto-news/upcoming-maruti-suzuki-cars-in-india-this-upcoming-year-new-swift-evx-electric-suv-more-11702970098629.html
  6. The 2019 world champion's move comes just days after scoring a second victory of the WRC season with M-Sport at Rally Chile last weekend. This will be Tanak's second spell driving for the Korean marque after sensationally leaving the team with a year remaining on his contract at the end of the 2022 season. Aside from wins in Sweden and Chile, and a second in Croatia, Tanak's 2023 campaign at M-Sport has been plagued by misfortune and reliability woes. The 35-year-old has however been convinced by Hyundai's new management structure, led by former Renault Formula 1 boss Cyril Abiteboul and its new technical director, ex-Volkswagen WRC and Williams F1 employee, Francois-Xavier Demaison. "Since our paths parted exactly one year ago, the team has been working very hard on the new technical structure. Hyundai Motorsport has a clear vision and target for the near future, and it is something that convinced me to join our forces again," said Tanak. "Our goal in this new chapter will be nothing less than to win all three titles, and with the new structure of the team, we have all the tools needed to achieve it. Game on. "This year has gone by so fast together with M-Sport Ford WRT. I'm proud we have managed to win two rallies against such big manufacturers and we were able to be in the championship fight for the first part of the season. "But this sport is tough and unfortunately we went down a few times too many, nevertheless all the people really tried hard to give us the best chances and I'm very grateful for them." Abiteboul told Motorsport.com that the signing of Tanak is a clear statement of intent from Hyundai and its commitment to the WRC. Hyundai has not disclosed the length of Tanak's contract, but Abiteboul did state that "stability" is important for any team. "For me, it is very important, signing a world champion and a rally winner and championship winner in any sport is extremely important, but it has also been our target since I joined the team," Abiteboul said. "It is a way to state our ambition but a way to show that changes that we have done already are starting to be convincing, as Ott is coming back to us with good reasons. There is a bit of a feeling of unfinished business on both sides which we hope we can complete. "I hope that everything we are doing shows that we like the sport which we have been in for more than 10 years, and we think that we are doing this not only to help Hyundai but to make the sport be a competitive environment, where Toyota have strong competitors. We want to be a stronger competitor for Toyota from next year and in the future." Tanak will again team up with Thierry Neuville, who is under contract for next year, while its plans beyond and whether it will run three or four i20Ns next year are expected to be firmed up before the final round in Japan in November. The team has held discussions with current full-time driver Esapekka Lappi, and Teemu Suninen and Dani Sordo, who have shared the third car for the balance of the year. "We have got a bit of time to do it because when you have your car one and two secured with two championship contenders you can afford to wait a bit to see what opportunities there are," added Abiteboul. "We need to make that decision in a well-considered way and that is what we are going to do in the next couple of weeks. I don't want to leave after Japan without any clear plans because it is all about planning and come January and the first rally, we need to hit the ground running." https://www.motorsport.com/wrc/news/tanak-to-leave-m-sport-and-re-join-hyundai-for-wrc-2024/10528394/

  8. Paris — Just 10 months before the opening of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, the French capital is battling an invasion of bedbugs. The tiny pests were first reported in hotels and vacation rental apartments across the city during the summer. Then there were sightings in movie theaters and, in recent days, there have even been reports of bedbugs crawling around on seats in both national high-speed trains and the Paris Metro system. One metro train driver was dismayed to find some of the unwelcome guests in his driver's cabin. Horrified train passengers have shared videos of the insects on social media, prompting many travelers to pay extra attention before they sit down or drop fabric bags or coats on the floor at their feet. One person told followers that passengers were "panicking" when they realized there were bedbugs in the train carriage, and they couldn't get off until the next station. Some even jumped ship — to Morocco. Port authorities in Tangiers found bedbugs on a passenger ferry that arrived from Marseille in southern France on Monday after the alert was raised during the Mediterranean crossing. It was the first time Moroccan officials had noted bedbugs from France on the move and, upon arrival in Tangiers, passengers had to wait while the ship and its cargo were cleaned and disinfected before they were permitted to disembark. Moroccan media outlets reported that Tangiers port and health authorities had put in place additional monitoring protocols after the ferry arrived to detect and prevent the spread of bedbugs from any further vessels arriving from France. Bedbugs found in at least 7 Las Vegas hotels Paris companies specializing in treating insect infestations say they've been overwhelmed in recent weeks. Parisians shell out an average of $500 to have their homes treated if they discover the tiny bugs. Paris City Hall is particularly worried about the potential risk for visitors to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer. "Bedbugs are a public health issue and should be declared as such," Deputy Mayor of Paris Emmanuel Grégoire wrote to Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. He called on the government to put together an action plan to address the problem at a national level. Transport Minister Clément Beaune has already announced a meeting this week with various public transport operators, with a view to "reassuring and protecting" travelers. How to protect yourself from bedbugs Bedbugs are tiny, but they are visible to the naked eye. They can spread easily and love to hide in mattresses and other soft furnishings like curtains, but also between floorboards, in electrical sockets and even behind wallpaper. They come out at night to feed on human blood. In a busy city like Paris, tourists can unwittingly pick up the pesky passengers in their suitcases from an infected hotel, then travel by metro or other public means and deposit the hitchhikers in the seats. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/paris-bedbugs-france-infestation-hotels-homes-even-trains/
  9. To paraphrase Ferris Bueller, tech moves pretty fast – and if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss the chance to own a drone with a 12 megapixel camera which starts hovering when it recognises your face. So keep up with our pick of the best gadgets and tech out right now, whether you're after something simple to make your every day more frictionless or something a bit special. To be specific, the 'something a bit special' is a tennis kitbag that also fires tennis balls at you. There will come a time, sooner or later, when the once-doomed Google Glass dream will be realised. Virtual reality – the kind that can fully immerse you in a different universe, rather than shoehorn you into a grainy 360° YouTube video and give you a medical-grade belly ache – will fit inside a simple pair of specs. We are not yet there. But Meta’s latest VR helmet, the Quest 3, is a serious upgrade on it’s a predecessor: smaller, curvier, more comfortable, packed with sci-fi tech and genuinely startling in its performance. The controllers are super light and easy to use, although you can just use your hands if you want to go full Minority Report (and why wouldn’t you?). Each eye is armed with 2,064 x 2,208 pixels, which translates to a crisp line of sight after some adjusting, and the field of view is impressive. It goes without saying that some games and apps push the technology to its limits with incredible graphics and engaging features, while others perfectly replicate the experience of living inside a Dreamcast. One thing’s for sure: it’s fun, either way. https://www.esquire.com/uk/design/g22798845/gadgets-for-men/
  10. FRANKFURT Dec 18 (Reuters) - IBM (IBM.N) said on Monday that it would buy Software AG's (SOWGn.DE) enterprise integration platforms for 2.13 billion euros ($2.33 billion) to bolster its artificial intelligence and hybrid cloud offerings. IBM will acquire Software AG's StreamSets and webMethods platforms with available cash on hand, it said. The two units formed Software AG's so-called "Super Ipaas" business, which was launched in October. The platforms provide application integration, application programming interface (API) management, and data integration among other uses. Software AG is majority owned by private equity firm Silver Lake, which currently owns 93.3% of shares in the German software company, following a takeover pursuit spanning several months. That deal valued the whole business at 2.6 billion euros ($2.84 billion). "The opportunity to bring the StreamSets and webMethods teams together with IBM to innovate in building the future of hybrid cloud and next-generation AI solutions for the enterprise is uniquely compelling," Christian Lucas, chairman of the supervisory board of Software AG said in a statement. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024. Silver Lake simultaneously announced its delisting offer for Software AG at 32 euros ($34.96) per share, the expected next step following its takeover this year. 11. In a paper published in Nature Photonics, researchers from the University of Oxford, along with collaborators from the Universities of Muenster, Heidelberg, and Exeter, report on their development of integrated photonic-electronic hardware capable of processing three-dimensional (3D) data, substantially boosting data processing parallelism for AI tasks.Conventional computer chip processing efficiency doubles every 18 months, but the processing power required by modern AI tasks is currently doubling around every 3.5 months. This means that new computing paradigms are urgently needed to cope with the rising demand. One approach is to use light instead of electronics—this allows multiple calculations to be carried out in parallel using different wavelengths to represent different sets of data. Indeed, in ground breaking work published in the journal Nature in 2021, many of the same authors demonstrated a form of integrated photonic processing chip that could carry out matrix vector multiplication (a crucial task for AI and machine learning applications) at speeds far outpacing the fastest electronic approaches. This work resulted in the birth of the photonic AI company, Salience Labs, a spin-out from the University of Oxford. Now the team has gone further by adding an extra parallel dimension to the processing capability of their photonic matrix-vector multiplier chips. This "higher-dimensional" processing is enabled by exploiting multiple different radio frequencies to encode the data, propelling parallelism to a level far beyond that previously achieved. As a test case the team applied their novel hardware to the task of assessing the risk of sudden death from electrocardiograms of heart disease patients. They were able to successfully analyze 100 electrocardiogram signals simultaneously, identifying the risk of sudden death with a 93.5% accuracy. The researchers further estimated that even with a moderate scaling of 6 inputs × 6 outputs, this approach can outperform state-of-the-art electronic processors, potentially providing a 100-times enhancement in energy efficiency and compute density. The team anticipates further enhancement in computing parallelism in the future, by exploiting more degrees of freedom of light, such as polarization and mode multiplexing. First author Dr. Bowei Dong at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford said, "We previously assumed that using light instead of electronics could increase parallelism only by the use of different wavelengths—but then we realized that using radio frequencies to represent data opens up yet another dimension, enabling superfast parallel processing for emerging AI hardware." Professor Harish Bhaskaran, Department of Materials, University of Oxford and CO-founder of Salience Labs, who led the work said, "This is an exciting time to be doing research in AI hardware at the fundamental scale, and this work is one example of how what we assumed was a limit can be further surpassed." https://techxplore.com/news/2023-10-square-cube-hardware-ai-3d.html
  12. Remember the big 4K update for Fallout 4 that was announced in 2022 as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the original Fallout? The good news is that it's still happening, but the bad news is that it's not happening until sometime in 2024. The Fallout 4 "next-gen update" for PC, Xbox Series X-S, and PlayStation 5, promises "performance mode features for high frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes and even bonus Creation Club content." It was slated for release sometime in 2023, and I assumed it would be relatively early in the year, given that it's an update to a game that was, at the time, seven years old. But Bethesda moves at its own pace, and if there's one thing we've learned from The Elder Scrolls 6, that pace is not always rapid. "Thank you for your patience with us as we work on the Fallout 4 next-gen update," Bethesda tweeted on the official Fallout account. "We know you're excited, and so are we! But we need a bit more time and look forward to an exciting return to the Commonwealth in 2024." It's disappointing, although the general reaction from fans is that it's better to wait than to rush things, and even though there's not a more specific release target than "sometime next year," there's also some happiness that Bethesda has finally acknowledged that the update is still happening. Several people have also predicted that the update will arrive sometime around the debut of the Fallout TV series, which airs on April 12, 2024, possibly in hopes that it will deliver a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners-style boost to sales. That may be a little cynical, but since we don't have anything else to go on at this point, I'd say it's not a bad bet. At the very least, it's nice to finally know that this thing is still happening, and hasn't quietly fizzled out under the scramble to bring renewed life to Starfield. I've reached out to Bethesda to see if we can get a more accurate release target for the Fallout 4 next-gen update (although in console terms at least, is it really a "next-gen" update at this point?) and will update if I receive a reply. https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-4s-big-4k-next-gen-update-is-delayed-until-2024/
