Apple's M2 Ultra is a mighty processor with 24 general-purpose cores and up to 76 integrated GPU cores. It is also probably faster than Intel's 28-core Xeon W found in the 2019 Mac Pro, so new Mac Pro workstation owners will feel a significant performance uplift. But according to a purported benchmark, this CPU cannot beat competitors from AMD and Intel in Geekbench 5 (via @VadimYuryev) as they boast very high clocks or feature a formidable core count. Heavy-duty workstation-grade processors are different from desktop and server CPUs in that they should deliver both very responsive performance (like all client processors) and consistently high performance under heavy workloads. This means that they must feature high instruction-per-clock performance, high clocks, high core count, support for loads of memory, and feature loads of PCIe lanes. AMD's Ryzen Threadripper Pro W5995X and Intel's Xeon W9-3495X comply with these requirements with their 64 and 56 cores, respectively. In a nutshell, they use server silicon configured to offer extremely high clocks when needed. When it comes to Apple's M2 Ultra, it consists of two M2 Max system-on-chips that were designed primarily for MacBook Pro and Mac Studio machines. Those workstations have moderate power consumption and do not support expandability. M2 Max was not exactly architected for high clocks or for expandability, as you can only install so much memory and so much storage in a compact PC. Instead of boosting clocks to extremes when a computationally heavy workload emerges, M2 uses built-in special-purpose accelerators. It was also not designed for an extreme core count because of power and cooling limitations. While two M2 Maxes look formidable on paper, they cannot boast clocks of Intel's Core i9-13900K or the core count of AMD's Ryzen Threadripper Pro W5995WX. This is why the benchmark result shows Apple's M2 Ultra cannot beat Intel's Core i9-13900K in single-thread workloads and even fall behind in multi-core workloads in Geekbench 5. Intel's desktop offering supports simultaneous multi-threading and can process up to 32 threads instantly. Compared to its actual rivals — AMD's Ryzen Threadripper Pro W5995X and Intel's Xeon W9-3495X — it easily beats them in single-thread workloads but is dramatically slower when more cores are needed. Some may argue that Geekbench 5 is a synthetic benchmark that does not reflect performance in real-world applications, which is a fair argument. But it gives a sense of what to expect from CPUs regarding their compute capabilities without any special-purpose accelerators. And this brings us to the fact that Apple's M2 SoCs have plenty of accelerators inside. Therefore, it may not need to have high clocks or extreme core count to offer great performance in many workstation-grade workloads. Then again, with so much compute horsepower under the hood, AMD's and Intel's workstation processors are designed to handle even the most demanding workloads. That said, it remains to be seen whether Apple's Mac Pro can actually beat workstations based on AMD's and Intel's CPUs in workstation applications. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/apple-m2-ultra-geekbenched

Single judge bench of Justice GA Sanap said that since animals cannot speak, they cannot demand their rights and hence, cases involving animal cruelty should be dealt with utmost sensitivity. Animals have emotions and feelings similar to human beings and cases relating to cruelty of animals have to be dealt with great sensitivity as animals cannot ask for their rights, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court recently observed [Ansar Ahmad Qureshi & Ors. v. State of Maharashtra & Anr.] Single judge bench of Justice GA Sanap said that since animals cannot speak, they cannot demand their rights. “Animals have emotions, feelings and senses similar to a human being. The only difference is that the animals cannot speak and therefore, though their rights are recognized under the law, they cannot assert the same. The rights of the animals, welfare of the animals and protection of the animals has to be taken care of by the concerned in accordance with law. It is to be noted that while considering the case of cruelty, to the animals in any form, the case has to be approached and decided with great sensitivity”, the judge observed. The observations were made while hearing the plea by certain persons who applied for custody of 39 bovines claiming they had license for sale and purchase of those animals. The animals had been intercepted and seized under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act when they were being transported in trucks illegally in an inhuman manner. The petitioners, though not accused of the crimes, applied for custody of the animals claiming they had license for sale and purchase of the animals. The Magistrate at Nagpur rejected the plea and this was upheld by the Sessions Court prompting the petitioners to move the High Court. The petitioners argued that since final adjudication on the matter may take time, the animals could be handed back to them in the interim so that petitioners could also enjoy the income from the milching the buffaloes. The cCurt noted that the number of animals being transported was beyond the capacity of the vehicles and the prescribed limit under the Transport of Animal Rules, 1978. There was also no arrangement of fodder and water in the trucks as sti[CENSORED]ted in the Rules. “The milching buffaloes were transported in a very cruel condition. It is seen on perusal of the record that the owners, who had played important role in these cases, have not been made the accused,” the Court observed. Justice Sanap relied upon a Supreme Court order which had said that in cases involving allegations of cruelty to the animals, it was not proper to handover custody to owners of the animal. Accordingly, the High Court refused to grant custody to the animals to the petitioners. It directed Maa Foundation, the registered gaushala, to take over custody of the animal till final adjudication of the matter The Court also directed the concerned police station officer with a to visit the Gaushala with a veterinary officer twice a month, and submit reports of the such visits to the concerned Magistrate. Advocate Laique Hussain appeared for petitioners. https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/animals-have-emotions-feelings-human-beings-bombay-high-court

Volvo will make a couple of its SUVs all-wheel-drive only for 2024. The new model year also brings some notable updates to other nameplates, including the S60 sedan and the all-electric C40/XC40 Recharge. Goodbye, Front-Drive The gas-fed XC40 and the XC60 will no longer be offered with front-wheel drive. The former says goodbye to the standard B4 powertrain, which exclusively fed the front axle through a 194-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. That leaves the all-wheel-drive B5, which has a 247-hp turbo four. Meanwhile, the XC60 lineup loses the front-drive version of the B5 powertrain. That leaves the all-wheel-drive B5 and the plug-in-hybrid T8 as the only two XC60 configurations, since the 295-hp all-wheel-drive B6 is also discontinued. Fans of the Volvo S60 Recharge Polestar Engineered will be sad to hear the high-performance variant is dead for 2024. The sedan featured the 455-hp T8 plug-in-hybrid powertrain, it also included adjustable Öhlins dampers, gold-painted six-piston Brembo front brake calipers, and forged 19-inch wheels. At least Volvo will still offer Polestar editions of the V60 wagon and the XC60. Recharge SUV Sibs Upgraded Last month, Volvo also announced updates to the fully electric XC40 Recharge and its coupe-like counterpart, the C40 Recharge. Each adds an available rear-drive configuration, which features a newly developed 248-hp electric motor and a 79.0-kWh battery pack that provides a claimed range of 297 miles for the C40 and 293 miles for the XC40. The all-wheel-drive versions of the Recharge siblings also adopt the new rear electric motor along with an asynchronous front-mounted motor that together still make 402 horses. However, their claimed range rises by 31 miles, and they can charge quicker thanks to a higher peak charging rate of 200 kilowatts. Pricing for the 2024 Volvo models is expected to be released in the coming months, so stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, the Swedish automaker has just revealed the small 2025 EX30 EV SUV, which starts at a low $36,145. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a44156686/2024-volvo-xc40-xc60-s60-updates/

Four children have been found alive after surviving a plane crash and spending weeks fending for themselves in Colombia's Amazon jungle. Colombia's president said the rescue of the siblings, aged 13, nine, four and one, was "a joy for the whole country". The children's mother and two pilots were killed when their light aircraft crashed in the jungle on 1 May. The missing children became the focus of a huge rescue operation involving dozens of soldiers and local people. President Gustavo Petro said finding the group was a "magical day", adding: "They were alone, they themselves achieved an example of total survival which will remain in history. "These children are today the children of peace and the children of Colombia." Mr Petro shared a photograph of several members of the military and Indigenous community caring for the siblings, who had been missing for 40 days. One of the rescuers held a bottle up to the mouth of the smallest child, while another fed one of the other children from a mug with a spoon. A video shared by Colombia's ministry of defence showed the children being air-lifted into a helicopter in the dark above the tall trees of the jungle. Mr Petro said the siblings were receiving medical attention - and that he had spoken to their grandfather, who told him "the mother jungle returned them". The children have been flown to the nation's capital Bogota, where ambulances have taken them to hospital for further medical treatment. In pictures: Fruit and footprints led rescuers to lost children The Cessna 206 aircraft the children and their mother had been travelling on before the crash was flying from Araracuara, in Amazonas province, to San José del Guaviare, when it issued a mayday alert due to engine failure. The bodies of the three adults were found at the crash site by the army, but it appeared that the children had escaped the wreckage and wandered into the rainforest to find help. A massive search began and in May, rescuers recovered items left behind by the children, including a child's drinking bottle, a pair of scissors, a hair tie and a makeshift shelter. Small footprints were also discovered, which led search teams to believe the children were still alive in the rainforest, which is home to jaguars, snakes and other predators. The children belong to the Huitoto indigenous group and members of their community hoped that their knowledge of fruits and jungle survival skills would give them a better chance of remaining alive. Indigenous people joined the search and helicopters broadcast a message from the children's grandmother, recorded in the Huitoto language, urging them to stop moving to make them easier to locate. Colombia's president came under criticism last month when a tweet published on his account mistakenly announced that the children had been found. He erased the tweet the next day saying that the information - which his office had been given by Colombia's child welfare agency - could not be confirmed. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-65864158

Acne is a common condition characterised by painful or pus-filled red bumps that can appear on any part of the body and affect individuals of all ages. It typically arises from the obstruction of pores caused by a combination of sebum, dirt, and infection. One such type of acne is butt acne which, like other types, can develop due to various reasons. “Butt acne is for real but it is the kind of regular acne,” said Dr Geetika Mittal, a dermatologist, in an Instagram post. “Blemishes on the buttocks can be due to various causes. Also, it is quite common and can appear at any age. While some of my patients complain of painful sporadic pimples, others have smaller red painless bumps,” she added. Dr Geetika listed various reasons for butt acne, including folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), keratosis (skin growth), pilaris (a condition that leads to dry, rough patches and tiny bumps), carbuncle (red, swollen, painful and pus-filled boils), or infection. Also Read | Skin expert shares face map to ‘decode what your breakouts are telling you’ Suggested identifying the reason and then treating them, the dermatologist listed certain things that you can do at home to start avoiding and treating them. *Make sure you don’t wear tight clothes for your gym instead wear light breezy fabrics. After gymming, make sure you take a shower immediately. *Use certain benzoyl peroxide-based washes because that will not only clean up the pores but also reduce the infection. *Make sure you cut down all the sugars in your diet because sugars increase inflammation. *If you have hair around there, laser hair reduction would be a good idea. “But if the infection still does not subside, you would need antibiotics and for that, you must see your skin expert. “There are exfoliating chemical peels and lasers which work on the pigmentation and also on the eruptions. They can be chosen post-examination,” concluded Dr Geetika. \https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/butt-acne-effective-tips-8078577/

As we inch toward Baldur's Gate 3's 1.0 release at the end of August, Larian has been sharing more looks of the game beyond its first act. Baldur's Gate 3's latest trailer at the Summer Game Fest finally showed us Larian's interpretation of Baldur's Gate itself, one of the iconic RPG cities, and the sight of some of my beloved old haunts in full 3D has me giddy. I'll get to beloved star of stage and screen Jason Isaacs in a second, but first: Sorcerous Sundries. One of my biggest questions about Larian's follow up to BioWare's classics was how the Studio would bring the city to life, and the shot of this magic emporium's stained glass dome dappled in the morning light and doing justice to BioWare's original pre-rendered background art had me grinning. Earlier in the trailer, I also clocked something that looks a lot like the Harbor Master's building in the docks as well. These landmarks feel like old friends to me, and the presence of (at least an homage to) a more second-order site like the harbor office betrays a love and attention to detail on Larian's part that has me more excited than ever to come back to this city. I've been craving the feeling I got when I saw the Witcher 3's version of Kaer Morhen, a loving brick-by-brick recreation of the fortress from 2007's The Witcher in a shiny new graphical engine, and Baldur's Gate 3's first glimpses of the city delivered that. It also just feels massive in a way that Divinity: Original Sin 2's Arx did not, and I can't wait to just get lost in sidequests in this place. As for Jason Isaacs, he's been one of my favorite character actors since his turn as Soviet Marshall Zhukov in 2017's The Death of Stalin, and his VO performance in The Last Worker was a real highlight of that game for me. Isaacs is playing the delightfully Forgotten Realmsily-named Enver Gortash, who seems to be a political rival making moves in Baldur's Gate with the help of an army of clockwork golems. His slimy charm and seeming good publicity remind me not only of Hugh Grant's character in the D&D movie, but also Sarevok's political plays in the original game. Looks like this city never learns, eh? Part of me also wonders if Larian has any more celebrity VOs in store to match Isaacs and the previously-announced J.K. Simmons.Summer Game Fest host Geoff Keighley also reports that BG3 is still on track for its August 31 release date according to Larian boss Swen Vincke, so it won't be long now until we're back in the house Balduran built. https://www.pcgamer.com/baldurs-gate-3-finally-gave-us-a-peek-at-the-city-itself-and-im-over-the-moon/

We’re not expecting the finished version of Android 14 to roll out for another two or three months, but the beta version has just had a big update, with Android 14 Beta 3 now here, complete with new lock screen customization options for Pixel phones. These features – spotted in Beta 3 by Mishaal Rahman – were previously teased at Google I/O 2023, and they allow you to change the colors, size, and style of the lock screen clock, as well as choosing which shortcuts to display on the lock screen. For the clock, you can choose from a number of digital options along with one analog one, while for the shortcuts, you have a choice of mute, device controls (for smart home devices), Google Wallet, camera, do not disturb, video call, flashlight, and a QR code scanner. You can place one in the bottom left corner and one in the bottom right, or choose not to display shortcuts. Disappointingly though you’re limited to those options, so you can’t have truly custom shortcuts. Still, this should be a handy update, and bring the Pixel series more in line with what’s possible on the iPhone 14, along with the other best iPhones, especially since iOS 16 introduced a similar feature. And while this implementation isn’t currently supported by other Android handsets, some manufacturers have been offering similarly capable lock screen customization for a while, anyway. Interface tweaks and a new tutorial This isn’t the only new feature in the Android 14 Beta 3 though, as Rahman also reports that there’s a new tutorial for gesture navigation, and there are various small interface tweaks, such as a new charging indicator, themed icons now having more vibrant colors, and more rounded buttons in the screenshot preview. So the enhanced lock screen customization is definitely the headline feature, but there are a few other things that users might appreciate too. Notably though, this beta has been released on the schedule Google previously set, which means we should be on target for a finished release, likely in August or September. As such, there shouldn’t be too long to go now, and we’d recommend most users wait until the final version is ready, since betas always have bugs. That said, if you really want the latest Android 14 beta now and you have a compatible phone, you can head to our how to download the Android 14 beta guide for full step-by-step instructions. https://www.techradar.com/news/android-14-beta-3-is-here-and-it-brings-enhanced-lock-screen-customization

Toronto Public Health (TPH) is advising residents to avoid physical contact with raccoons and other wild animals due to a “significant increase” in the number of sick and injured raccoons around the city. The city’s health unit said in a Thursday press release that they have received 88 reports of injuries caused by raccoons so far in 2023, a 117 per cent increase compared to the five-year average between 2018 and 2022. More than 80 per cent of the individuals bitten or scratched by raccoons received post-exposure prophylaxis treatment due to concerns about rabies transmission, they said. Reported raccoon bites and scratches are often the result of avoidable interactions such as feeding or petting the animals, TPH continued in the press release. While the risk of rabies is low in Toronto, the disease can be fatal if left untreated. Public health is advising anyone who is bitten or scratched by a raccoon or other mammal, it’s best to wash the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, apply an antiseptic to the wound, and immediately seek medical attention. As well, TPH said it is of utmost importance that residents do not interact with wildlife, and protect their pets with rabies vaccinations. https://www.cp24.com/news/stay-away-from-raccoons-and-other-wild-animals-warns-toronto-public-health-1.6432798

General Motors will team with Tesla to let owners of GM EVs use the Tesla 12,000-unit fast-charging network beginning in 2024. GM EVs currently charge using the Combined Charging System, or CCS. Starting next year, GM said, owners will be able to get an adapter to make their EVs compatible with Tesla's Supercharger network, which uses the North American Charging Standard, or NACS. Ford announced in May that it will be teaming with Tesla so its EVs can be charged on the Supercharger network. General Motors electric vehicles will be able to use Tesla's Supercharger network starting in 2024, appearing to put Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) on the path to be the dominant charging technology in North America. GM vehicles currently are set up for the Combined Charging System, or CCS. GM CEO Mary Barra made the announcement via Twitter Spaces on Thursday. By teaming with Tesla, the company is expected to save millions on costs to add to its own charging infrastructure. GM currently has 134,000 chargers that are accessible through its own Ultium Charge 360 program and mobile app. Barra said in a statement that this pairing is intended to "help move the industry toward a single North American Charging Standard." Barra expressed enthusiasm during the Twitter conversation for GM customers' added access to "12,000 Tesla fast-chargers. I couldn't be more excited for what this is going to do for customers and for EV adoption."In a statement today, GM said it will start integrating NACS charging into new EVs it builds starting in 2025. In the meantime, it will provide owners of GM EVs with adapters to let them use NACS charging stations. The automaker said it will also make adapters available for those who own NACS-standard vehicles (such as Teslas) so they can use the CCS charging stations that already exist. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a44133661/gm-electric-vehicles-tesla-charging-2024/

In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, it has become increasingly difficult to find a healthy balance between work and personal life. The demands of work, coupled with personal obligations and responsibilities, often leave individuals feeling overwhelmed, stressed and without mental peace. However, a work-life balance is important to our overall well-being. It allows us to maintain our mental health, nurture personal relationships, and pursue activities that bring us joy and fulfilment. In this article, we will look at the keys to promoting work-life balance and clearing the path to mental peace. If we prioritise work-life balance and apply basic strategies, we can create an environment that promotes psychological well-being and supports the harmonious integration of work and personal life. Let's explore effective ways to create work-life balance and identify opportunities for greater peace of mind. ● Setting clear boundaries: Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is critical to maintaining balance. Set specific work hours and stick to them. Avoid the temptation to constantly check email or engage in work-related tasks outside of designated hours. Also, dedicate uninterrupted time to your personal life and make sure work does not interfere with your cherished moments with family, friends or self-care activities. To find spiritual peace, you must take care of yourself. Prioritise self-care activities that recharge and rejuvenate you. These can include exercise, meditation, reading, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones. By investing time in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, you can recharge your batteries and maintain a healthy outlook on work and life. ● Delegate and collaborate: Don't hesitate to delegate tasks or ask colleagues for assistance when the workload becomes too heavy. Foster a culture of collaboration in your workplace by encouraging teamwork and task sharing. Delegating tasks not only lightens the load on you but also allows others to develop new skills and contribute to the team's success. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. ● Practice mindfulness: Incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine can have a positive impact on your mental peace. Take time throughout the day to breathe mindfully, observe your thoughts without judgment, and fully engage in the present moment. Mindfulness helps reduce stress, improve concentration, and bring clarity to the decision-making process, ultimately contributing to a more balanced and peaceful mindset. Advances in technology have created opportunities for flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or flexible schedules. When possible, look for options that allow you to better manage your time and commitments. Remote work can eliminate the need for long commutes and provide more flexibility in work-life balance, leading to greater mental peace and overall well-being. ● Effective time management: Developing effective time management is critical to achieving work-life balance. Prioritise tasks based on importance and urgency, break down larger projects into manageable sections and avoid procrastination. Using tools like to-do lists, calendars, and productivity apps can help you stay organised and ensure your time is allocated efficiently, leaving room for both work and personal commitments. Work-life balance and mental rest are critical to overall well-being and productivity. By implementing strategies such as setting clear boundaries, self-care, mindfulness and flexibility, individuals can achieve a harmonious integration of work and personal life. Remember that work-life balance is an ongoing process that requires intention, commitment and regular re-evaluation. Once you find the key to work-life balance, you can experience more mental peace, better relationships, and more fulfilling and meaningful life. Start making changes today and open the door to a healthier and happier life. So let us prioritise work-life balance and adopt strategies, in this way, we can create a life that is not only productive but also meaningful and fulfilling. It is within our power to unlock the door to a healthier and happier life. Start making changes today and harness the transformative potential of work-life balance. https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lifestyle/news-promoting-work-life-balance-6-keys-to-achieving-mental-peace-602446

Former US President Donald Trump has been charged over his handling of classified documents after he left the White House. Mr Trump, 76, faces seven charges including mishandling classified documents, and obstructing efforts to investigate, his lawyer said. Both are federal crimes which can carry a prison sentence on conviction. Mr Trump is campaigning to make a return to the White House in 2024. Legal experts say the indictment - the second time he has been charged with a crime - does not prevent him running for the presidency again. In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Mr Trump said he had been summoned to appear at a federal court in Miami, Florida, on Tuesday afternoon. He will be arrested at court and will hear the charges against him. "I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former president of the United States," Mr Trump wrote. He added: "This is indeed a dark day for the United States of America. We are a country in serious and rapid decline, but together we will Make America Great Again!" The charges have not yet been made public, but the details were laid out by his lawyer Jim Trusty. He told CNN they include conspiracy, false statements, obstruction of justice, and illegally retaining classified documents under the Espionage Act. Mr Trump was at his gold club in Bedminster, New Jersey on Thursday when news of the indictment broke. On Friday, the US Secret Service will meet Mr Trump's staff and security officers to plan his journey to the Miami courthouse next week. The investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents has been overseen by special prosecutor Jack Smith, who has been considering evidence since he was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November. Last year, Mr Trump's Florida resort Mar-a-Lago was searched by the FBI and 11,000 documents were seized. They included around 100 marked as classified, and some labelled top secret. There were reports last week that prosecutors had obtained an audio recording of Mr Trump in which he acknowledged keeping a classified document after leaving the White House in January 2021. It is against US law for federal officials - including a president - to remove or keep classified documents at an unauthorised location. Legal experts say Mr Trump will still be able to enter the White House race. How Trump indictment might change 2024 election "He can be indicted any number of times and it won't stop his ability to stand for office," says David Super, a professor at Georgetown University Law Centre. Opinion polls show Mr Trump is currently the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. He could continue running even if convicted in the documents case. As Mr Trump issued a fundraising email with the subject line "BREAKING: INDICTED" on Thursday, several leading Republicans voiced their support for him. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, said it was "unconscionable for a president to indict the leading candidate opposing him". "House Republicans will hold this brazen weaponisation of power accountable," he wrote on Twitter. Mr Trump's rival for the 2024 nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said: "We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation. "The DeSantis administration will bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias and end weaponisation once and for all." Vivek Ramaswamy, who is also running, said he would "commit to pardon Trump promptly on January 20, 2025, and to restore the rule of law in our country". But another candidate, Asa Hutchinson, said Mr Trump's alleged actions "should not define our nation or the Republican Party". A separate probe into Mr Trump's role in the storming of the US Capitol is also being overseen by Jack Smith, a former war crimes attorney who is known as a dogged investigator. Mr Trump became the first former president to be charged with a crime in April, after he pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records over a hush-money payment to a porn star. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65852062

Even with just two initial difficulty levels and enemy scaling, difficulty in Diablo 4 is pretty subjective. We've gotten our co-op-playing editors together to weigh in on whether their time campaigning with a crew of friends so far has turned Diablo 4 into a lukewarm day in Hell. Diablo 4 co-op is way too easy Evan Lahti, Global Editor-in-Chief: The first steps you take in a new game with your friends are sacrosanct. You've all set aside time to be in this little, demon-filled world together, and you want that pristine first playthrough to be memorable, grounded in a shared feeling of discovery. But the four hours I've so far put into Diablo 4 co-op with my friends were seriously disappointing. I was shocked by how night-and-day different co-op difficulty was from the time I put into singleplayer as a Druid last week. It genuinely felt like something was broken, like Blizzard had set enemy damage to 0.1 rather than 1.0 in the game's code, and I know how ridiculous that sounds. I've never played a game that I've enjoyed so much solo but enjoyed so little in co-op. We'd all rolled fresh characters—a Barbarian, Rogue, and me as the Necromancer—setting the difficulty to the maximum World Tier 2 that Diablo 4 allows for anyone who hasn't completed the campaign. (As we note in our Diablo 4 world tiers explainer, you have to complete the campaign and finish the Cathedral of Light Capstone dungeon in Kyovashad in order to unlock World Tier 3.) We hit level 20 in our first night. Every miniboss, world event, story boss, and other named enemy we encountered was strangely easy, inflicting significantly less damage than when I was playing singleplayer. Bosses maybe forced us each to drink one or two health potions each, and I barely had to worry about positioning or optimizing my ability cooldowns. Low-level mobs of spiders, ghouls, or bandits were effortless fights. I should say: I'm not a hardcore Diablo player. I didn't return to Diablo 3 after the first few months. But now I'm questioning whether I want to play co-op at all until I've completed the campaign, which puts me in the not-great position of telling my friends I'd rather not play a game with them until I've played it solo. We'd all rolled fresh characters—a Barbarian, Rogue, and me as the Necromancer—setting the difficulty to the maximum World Tier 2 that Diablo 4 allows for anyone who hasn't completed the campaign. But now I'm questioning whether I want to play co-op at all until I've completed the campaign, which puts me in the not-great position of telling my friends I'd rather not play a game with them until I've played it solo. Tyler Colp, Associate Editor: Admittedly, I haven't played as much co-op as Evan and Lauren, but my brief experience in both the betas and the final game was as tough as I'd expected. I normally play solo on World Tier 2, which is only really slightly harder than 1. Most of my friends play on World Tier 1, and when we grouped up together, the difficulty didn’t seem to substantially increase outside of boss fights. It's difficult to gauge how Diablo 4's enemy level scaling works. Playing through the game twice on my own revealed how your power level tends to spike as you pick up new skills and gear. In co-op, it sort of feels like you’re always in that window, but to make up for it, it seemed like the game would spawn more enemies at once. A Sorceress, Necromancer, and Barbarian happens to be a very potent combo of two casters and a melee-based character, so most combat encounters were a distraction as we chased down campaign objectives. The first major boss in Act 1 felt considerably harder than it was alone. The fight takes place on a small platform and fills it with dangerous projectiles that would knock our health down by half with each hit. It was on the cusp of being too chaotic, but a little bit of target focus and health potion spam got the job done with only one of us dying mid-fight. Like many of the game’s boss fights, this didn't stick out to me as egregiously hard compared to fighting waves of demons—some bosses punish certain classes more than others. But it does make me wonder if the co-op difficulty fluctuates more as you get closer to level 30, where at least the solo experience starts to drag in terms of power levels. I imagine the early game is where the challenge is rather smooth, but once enemies start to become more lethal and have unique traits, it might require more intentional teamwork for clearing out packs of enemies. Or maybe it won't, and the real friction only arrives once you’ve unlocked endgame activities like Nightmare Dungeons and Helltide events. https://www.pcgamer.com/is-it-just-me-or-does-co-op-make-diablo-4-feel-way-too-easy/

Welcome to our live coverage of Adobe Summit 2023. For the next two days (June 8 - 9), we’re on the floor at ExCel London to see what’s new from Adobe. CEO Shantanu Narayen will be kicking things off in the opening keynote, He’ll be joined by other Adobe execs and industry leaders to reveal the latest work from the company, and its impact. Expect plenty of focus on productivity, personalization, creativity, and, of course, AI. Day One is about to start - and we'll be here to provide all the updates as they happen. This is London calling. We’ve arrived at the Excel for Adobe Summit 2023. It’s warm, it’s bright, and we’re already two coffees in - so it should be a great day. Centered around creating modern digital experiences, Adobe Summit is a must for anyone in marketing, eCommerce, CX, data analytics, and more. And we’ll be here bringing you all the latest news and updates as they happen. We’re expecting to see announcements across a range of products, including Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express. The morning begins with Adobe boss Shantanu Narayen taking to the stage for the opening keynote. He’ll be joined by President of Digital Experience Business Anil Chakravarthy, President of Digital Media David Wadhwani, and business leaders from other organizations. Not long to go now. The lights dim, the music cranks up. It's about to start.... President of Digital Experience Business Anil Chakravarthy hits the stage to welcome everyone. First mention of generative AI - and we're only three minutes in. Expect many, many more... "Digital markets and digital products are converging," says Chakravarthy. And it's up to businesses to connect and personalize experiences. He calls it "experience-led growth". Shantanu Narayen, CEO, comes to the stage. The focus is on the revolutionary nature of everything digital - he likens it to the radical impact of mobile. "Creators need tools with power and precision" to get the right message to the right people at the right time. Narayen highlights the decades-long investment in AI, and Adobe’s approach to the new technology, which can loosely be described as “responsible”. He explains that content will be tagged to increase transparency, provenance, and authorship. President of Digital Media David Wadhwani bounds to center-stage. He tells the audience, “marketing happens in real-time. It’s as fast as social.” Building on Narayen’s comments, Wadhwani says AI-generated content from Adobe is safe for commercial use since it tracks all the data from start to finish. "Adobe magic," Wadhwani says after a display of Adobe Firefly working inside Photoshop. But now the focus is on Express, with creative teams and marketers brought together with the tool. The company's showing some major love to the online graphic design app. Better integration with other Adobe products, more stock imagery, and built in gen AI. Ever wanted to create unique font textures through artificial intelligence? That's a thing now. It's official: Adobe Express and Firefly for Enterprise is now available. Chakravarthy returns to talk marketing, marketing teams, and marketing tools. Adobe Mix Modeller and Adobe Product Analytics are getting a whole lot of love, and we're promised a demo later during the keynote. Invoking The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, Sadoun tells us he often thinks it's not important to be the best at what you do. It's important to be the only one doing it. To end, Narayen lightens the mood with a word association game - “Polo?” he asks. “Youth,” Sadoun replies. And we're back with Chakravarthy. He explains that integration is one of the most important factors for a true digital experience. He says businesses can go from receiving a customer signal to taking action and gathering insights without pause. It's effectively possible with Adobe. Content, content, content. We're back with Chakravarthy to learn how Adobe is rethinking the content supply chains - from planning and production, up to delivery, and analysis. New campaign planning and visualizations are coming. "it's past time to modernize," he says - aiming his words at businesses still running on spreadsheets. Here's an interesting one: Through the power of Sensei, you’ll be able to analyze a piece of campaign content from color to copy. It'll let users really drill down into their audiences. So, marketing metrics don't have to be a superficial, top-line numbers game - always a tricky thing to quantify for creative work. Another fireside chat (no, there's still no fire). This time, it's a conversation between reps from Adobe and Covento. But my word, someone's left a mic too close to the electrics. It's squealing through the main hall. Luc Dammann, Adobe's President of EMEA, finishes his chat and turns attention to those in the hall. "Trust is the imperative," he says, noting that customers want to be seen, understood. Experiences need to be "personalized but also a human way. Establishing a connection is so important. Easier said than done. You know this." And that's a wrap. We'll be back for tomorrow's keynote with Emma Thompson (yes, that Emma Thompson). Sonali Patel now takes the stage. We're shown a demo on the AI-infused Adobe Experience Platform that empowers businesses throughout the customer journey. New ways to engage, new ways to activate advertising. "Fasten your seatbelts," she said. "Let's take a ride." https://www.techradar.com/news/live/adobe-summit-2023-live-all-the-news-and-announcements-from-day-one

A few weeks ago we reported on Runway Gen-2, an online text-to-video tool, which generates 4-second clips based on your prompts. Up until now, the free service has only been available in a closed beta that operated via a series of private channels on Runway's Discord server. However, as of today, Gen-2 is available to everyone and you can use it via the company's website instead of Discord. To use Runway Gen-2, you'll need to create a free account and at Runway's site and then navigate to app.runwayml.com/ai-tools/gen-2 for the tool (or click the link in your control panel there). The company has had its Gen-1 tool, which modifies existing videos to make them look different (ex: turning people into Claymation), available to everyone for months, but Gen-2 takes simple text prompts such as "robot drinking a beer" and turns them into clips. As we noted in our prior story on Gen-2, the video clips have no sound at all and they often have very limited movement. Though you can download the clips in MP4 format, they often look more like animated GIFs. For viewing purposes, I converted all the clips embedded in this article into GIFs but it seems to have no effect on their smoothness. You can also upload a photo and then give Gen-2 a prompt that tells it to use that image as inspiration. I uploaded a headshot of myself and asked it show "this guy drinking a beer." The person in the video looks quite a bit like me -- he's a middle-aged, bald white guy with a salt-and-pepper beard and glowing green glasses -- but he's not really drinking a beer; it's not quite clear what he's supposed to be sticking in his mouth. After you've entered your prompt (and possibly photo), you click the Generate button and the tool tells you if you're in the queue for your request to be processed. It then gives you a percentage showing you how much of your video is completed. In my tests, it always took less than a minute between when I entered my prompt and when the video was completed. This is consistent with what I experienced when using the beta version of Gen-2, except, in that case, I'd send my prompt to a Discord bot which didn't show a progress percentage but instead would just send me back the video after a minute or so. When the video is complete, you will see it on-screen and you can play it right there or click a button to download it as an MP4 file. It will also be stored in the assets section of your account. Unlike with the beta version of Gen-2, it appears that there's a limit to how many videos you can generate for free. My free account showed a limit of 60 seconds of video, which at 4 seconds per clip, amounts to 15 clips. If you use up your credits or you want extra features such as an upscaled (higher resolution) or videos that don't contain Runway's watermark, you need to pay for a Standard account which is $15 a month or $144 a year when paid at once. For that price, you get 125 seconds of video per month and can pay extra for more. Since gaining access to the private beta a few weeks ago, I've spent a lot of time playing with Gen-2. I'm impressed with how good many of the clips are, but it's very inconsistent and people can look like they come straight from the uncanny valley, with strange expressions in their eyes or misshapen body parts. For better or worse, the tool is pretty bad at recreating specific characters. I asked it, at various times, to create videos of the cartoon characters Peppa Pig, Paddington Bear and Blue from Blue's Clues and they look sort-of like those characters and are usually cartoony, but the likenesses aren't very accurate. One particular image of a photorealistic Peppa Pig is really creepy and seems like it was ripped from a horror film. You can also forget about asking for something involving a corporate logo. I asked it several times to create videos that used the Tom's Hardware name or logo and got gibberish letters instead. However, one thing Runway Gen-2 is really good at is generating images of robots drinking alcoholic beverages or doing other "bar" things. Every time I asked it for robots drinking or smoking or dancing or pouring beer or washing their hands in the men's room at a bar, I got pretty decent output. I even got good clips of robots doing standup comedy or lounge singing. Asking for robots playing billiards or foosball or darts a bar was more of a mixed bag.Other areas of success I found include families eating meals together and time-lapse views of cities or nature scenes. Despite the limitations of Runway Gen-2, we have seen a number of very creative people turn them into longer movies by stitching many clips together. Perhaps the most famous example of a Runway Gen-2 movie is the Pepperoni Hugspot Commercial pizza commercial, made by a creator who goes by the name Pizza Later. Pizza later worked with a friend to create a commercial for a fake flatulence drug called FlatuLess, which we've embedded below. Note that the music and voiceovers were created with other AI tools and all the clips were stitched together by humans using Adobe After Effects. The clips look like they are from an old commercial because Pizza Later used the Red Giant VHS filter on them. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/runway-gen-2-text-to-video-available-to-all

Over the past year, the keepers at the Kazkova Dibrova zoo in southern Ukraine battled to safeguard their charges under Russian occupation. The park surrounding the zoo was mined and access routes blocked, making evacuating the animals impossible. Workers braved bullets from troops firing across the Dnieper River to make their daily trek to feed the animals. In winter, one of the volunteers took home many animals that couldn’t otherwise survive the cold. Farmers and other residents brought vegetables — cabbage, apples, pears and pumpkins — and hay to feed a menagerie that included two monkeys, Anfisa and Charlie, a pony named Malish, a mule, a parrot, a crow, a groundhog, guinea pigs and ferrets. Now, the sole survivors after a nearby dam burst on Tuesday are a couple of swans and ducks, the zoo said in a Facebook post. The zoo, dubbed “Fairytale Dibrova,” is in a park on the banks of the Dnieper River, just west of the Kakhovka dam, which ruptured early Tuesday after a reported blast, sending a deluge through surrounding areas. Ukraine dam’s destruction could ‘forever’ change ecosystems, officials say Workers arrived at the zoo early Tuesday to find it entirely flooded. As many as 300 animals died. “This is terrible grief, terrible pain," the facility said on Facebook, adding that it had tried its best to save the animals’ lives. The animal deaths were confirmed by Oleksandr Todorchuk, head of UAnimals — a rescue group that has helped shelter and rehabilitate animals during the Russian invasion. UAnimals sent rescue crews to the city to help save and feed any animals displaced by the dam’s destruction. Ukraine and Russia traded blame for the damage to the dam, although it wasn’t immediately clear who or what caused it. Aerial videos showed heavy structural damage, with the dam appearing to be missing sections measuring hundreds of feet. Both Ukraine and Russia have previously accused each other of plotting to destroy the dam, which Russia seized in the opening days of the conflict because of its critical role in supplying fresh water to Crimea. Officials warn the deluge of water unleashed by its destruction will destroy wildlife habitats, imperil communities that depend on the water for drinking and growing crops, and force towns downstream of the dam to relocate. Zoos have been swept up in the conflict across Ukraine. During Russia’s attempt to seize Kyiv last year, the animals at the capital’s zoo were spooked by air raid sirens and blasts, The Washington Post reported. Zoos in other places, including the eastern city of Kharkiv have been damaged in the fighting. Video footage showed residents in communities downstream of the dam rescuing animals from the flood waters, including a man leading a cow through thigh-high water in the southern city of Kherson Kazkova Dibrova zoo officials received a glimmer of hope late Tuesday — a baby swan, only five days old and thought to have been swept away in the floods, had been spotted by local residents swimming with its parents. The zoo suggested on Facebook that it was possible some other animals survived and urged local residents to look after them if they came across one. Eve Sampson contributed to this report. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/06/07/ukraine-zoo-animals-kakhova-dibrova-dam/

Break out your American-flag shirt and grab your passport, because NASCAR is headed to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The crossover isn't as strange as it might seem. American sports-car teams have long been vying for glory on the Mulsanne straight at the famed endurance race, but NASCAR has only been to Le Mans once before. Each year, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) welcomes a team to Le Mans to participate in the Garage 56 program, an exhibition class created in 2012 to encourage technical innovation. Past G56 racers have run on alternative fuels or featured cockpits equipped for disabled drivers, with two teams from the latter category being the only G56 entries to have ever finished the race. For 2023, the ACO invited NASCAR to compete in the Garage 56 spot to bring the rowdy V-8 NASCAR experience to Europe. Even though NASCAR runs road courses, endurance racing has different rules and challenges. So it's not as simple as just shipping over a Cup Series car. NASCAR chose Hendrick Motorsports, the most successful team in NASCAR's premier class, to go to France. This year's G56 entry will be a Camaro ZL1 Cup Car, modified for the long hours and difficult racing conditions at Le Mans. "We had to adapt it to make it an endurance vehicle," says Brandon Thomas, vice president of vehicle design. "But it's a Cup car in spirit." Check out the photo gallery to learn more about how NASCAR modified the Camaro stock car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.In 1976, with gas prices high and track attendance low, the ACO invited NASCAR to send over a couple of its big V-8-powered cars to battle with Porsches and prototypes at Le Mans. A Dodge Charger and a Ford Torino made the journey, but neither survived the 24 hours.Nissan campaigned the odd-looking Deltawing in 2012, G56's inaugural year. A study in aerodynamics and weight reduction, the oddly shaped, narrow-front-track wingless design (nearly all downforce came from its diffuser) could run while sipping a fraction of the fuel and using fewer tires. It weighed just over 1000 pounds and successfully hit the pace the ACO requested (between prototype and GT racers). It retired on lap 76 after making contact with a barrier, but that was after it made good on its goal and returned 8.8 mpg at race pace. That'd be just as shocking as a production car getting 100 mpg. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43965959/nascar-at-24-hours-of-le-mans-2023/

Dr Ramdas, Senior Dermatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad said, "Moisturisers are products used to hydrate and nourish the skin. They are designed to prevent dryness, maintain the skin's moisture barrier, and promote a smooth and healthy complexion." Owing to the summer heat and increase in humidity, many of us tend to skip one of the most important skincare steps — moisturisation. However, as we age, the skin’s hydration tends to lessen, making it necessary to use a moisturiser to keep it supple, irrespective of the weather. But, wait, it’s not just about slathering your face with a moisturiser, for effective results, it is equally important to understand the dos and don’ts when it comes to using this skincare product. But before that, let us tell you why it’s important to use a moisturiser. According to Dr Ramdas, Senior Dermatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad, “Moisturisers help hydrate and nourish the skin. They are designed to prevent dryness, maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, and promote a smooth and healthy complexion. They can come in various forms, including creams, lotions, gels, and oils.”Now, let’s come to the main part — the common mistakes made when using moisturiser, as pointed out by Dr Tanvi Vaidya, founder, Derma MD Clinics, on Instagram. Apply moisturiser on damp skin (within 5 minutes of bath) to lock the moisture. Concurring, Dr Ramdas said that the best way to apply moisturiser is on slightly damp skin. “After cleansing, gently pat your face with a towel, leaving it slightly damp. This technique helps seal in moisture, creating a protective barrier that prevents evaporation and maintains hydration. But if your skin is already dry, still applying moisturiser.” Mistake #2 Too little quantity To get the best result it’s important to use the correct quantity. Agreeing, Dr Ramdas noted that the amount of moisturiser needed varies by skin type and product. “Begin with a pea-sized amount, adjusting as necessary. If skin feels moisturised without residue, you’ve likely used the right amount. Start small and add more if needed, avoiding excessive application that may clog pores or feel heavy.” Ideally, use it both in the AM and PM, but if you have to choose, choose PM. “Use a sunscreen-infused moisturiser in the morning to protect from UV rays. At night, replenish moisture and repair skin with a suitable moisturiser. Choose one that suits your skin type and needs,” said Dr Ramdas. Although some moisturisers have sun protection, Dr Ramdas stressed that it’s best to use a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen. “Moisturisers with SPF may not offer enough coverage or require frequent reapplication. For proper UV protection, apply a dedicated sunscreen with SPF 30+ even if your moisturiser has SPF,” he added. Mistake #5 Ignoring the neck and chest 3-4 pumps are enough for your face and neck. Along similar lines, Dr Ramdas said, “Extend moisturiser beyond face to neck and chest. These areas are exposed to sun and ageing factors. Apply in gentle, upward strokes for hydration and youthful appearance.” Mistake #6 Applying in the wrong order Always go for actives-moisturiser-sunscreen. Explaining the right order, Dr Ramdas said, “To maximise skincare effectiveness, follow this order: cleanse with a gentle cleanser, balance pH with toner, apply serums/treatments for specific concerns, moisturise to seal in hydration and protect with broad-spectrum sunscreen.” Concluding, Dr Ramdas said, “To maximise the benefits of moisturisers, avoid these mistakes — using the wrong type for your skin, overusing and causing clogged pores, neglecting the neck and chest, using expired products and skipping nighttime moisturisation for optimal skin rejuvenation and repair. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/common-mistakes-applying-moisturiser-skincare-tips-8650806/

Former US vice-president Mike Pence has offered his most forceful repudiation of Donald Trump to date during a speech launching his 2024 campaign. The Republican accused Mr Trump of being unfaithful to the US constitution and of abandoning conservative values. The former Indiana governor and congressman formally commenced his White House campaign on Wednesday. The move pits him against his two-time running mate, who he served under in the White House from 2017-21. At a speech in Ankeny, Iowa, Mr Pence argued that Mr Trump had encouraged the mob that attacked the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, and had incorrectly asserted that Mr Pence had the power to overturn the election result. "But the American people deserve to know that on that day, President Trump also demanded that I choose between him and the constitution," he said. "Now, voters will be faced with the same choice: I chose the constitution and I always will." He added that Mr Trump's actions on 6 January should disqualify him from returning to power. "I believe that anyone who puts themselves over the constitution should never be president of the United States," he said. "And anyone who asked someone else to put them over the constitution should never be president of the United States again." Mr Pence, 64, also took shots at Democratic President Joe Biden as well, arguing that neither he nor Mr Trump are similar to average Americans who know how to "treat each other with kindness and respect even when we disagree". Much of his speech focused on his disagreements with Mr Trump, but he also hit out at another Republican 2024 rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. "Donald Trump and others who would seek the presidency would walk away from our traditional role on the world stage," he said, hitting out at Mr DeSantis for his recent remarks about the war in Ukraine. In a later CNN town hall, he continued attacking his rivals, critising Mr Trump for having previously called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "genius". "I know the difference between a genius and a war criminal, and I know who needs to win in the war in Ukraine," he said. But he also condemned prosecutors for investigating Mr Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office, saying "indicting a former president in the United States sends a terrible message to the world". It comes after Mr Pence was cleared of wrongdoing last week by prosecutors over his own handling of classified info. Mr Pence was one of eight Republican presidential candidates who appeared at a fundraising event at the Iowa state fairground, known as the Roast and Ride, last weekend. He arrived on a Harley Davidson along with another couple of hundred bikers who rode in convoy, raising money for military veterans. But that was not enough to provoke much excitement around his candidacy. An energetic Ron DeSantis got the most enthusiastic response as he promised to "fight the woke" wherever he finds it. Mr Pence's speech, by comparison, was flat and lacklustre, perhaps demonstrating why a former vice-president with nationwide name recognition is trailing badly in opinion polls. According to a Reuters-Ipsos survey released last month, Mr Pence is polling at 5%, compared to 44% for Mr Trump. One former Trump voter, Todd Wilson, said he felt Mr Pence "needs to be a little bit stronger". The candidate's humility was a plus, he said, "but I think if you're going to be the president, you got to have to have a little bit of a bulldog in you. So I'm looking for that out of Pence." The Republican field for the 2024 nomination is increasingly crowded. On Tuesday, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie launched a bid. On Wednesday, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum also announced that he was entering the race. Mr Pence was seen as an unswervingly loyal deputy to Mr Trump through much of their four years in office. But he has distanced himself since the riot at the US Capitol. Mr Trump pressured Mr Pence to overturn Joe Biden's election victory when he presided over the certification of results in Congress and admonished him for lacking "courage" when he refused. Some rioters were heard chanting "hang Mike Pence" as they stormed the halls of Congress, and many Trump loyalists view him as a traitor. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65839793

The fan emulation scene has not only lead to countless innovations over the years, it's directly benefited Nintendo. In 2023, the three longest-standing pillars of game company Nintendo are Mario, Zelda, and insisting emulation is a blight on the videogame industry. These pillars have endured for decades: as far back as 2003 Nintendo had a legal page on its official site dedicated to condemning both emulation and ROM download sites, claiming "the introduction of emulators created to play illegally copied Nintendo software represents the greatest threat to date to the intellectual property rights of video game developers." I'll give Nintendo some credit for consistency, since last week—shortly after pressuring Valve to remove GameCube/Wii emulator Dolphin from Steam—Nintendo issued a statement just as breathless and fear-mongering as the one on its old corporate website. "Using illegal emulators or illegal copies of games harms development and ultimately stifles innovation," the company told Kotaku. Nintendo can stomp its feet about emulation all it likes, but saying it stifles innovation? Whoever came up with that argument should be embarrassed, because I can't think of a company that's benefited more from the hobbyist emulation scene than Nintendo itself. Here's a blatant bit of hypocrisy: I know that at least one contributor to the Android version of Dolphin was involved in Nintendo's official emulation of GameCube and Wii games on the Nvidia Shield TV. Digital Foundry took a look at the games in 2018, including Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and several others, and determined they were being emulated rather than running natively on the Shield's Android platform. These Android ports were only released in China and seemed like a test case for Nintendo doing GameCube and Wii emulation on the Switch, which is a cut-down version of the same hardware found in the Nvidia Shield TV. I don't know why that never came to pass, but if we ever see GameCube or Wii emulation on a future Switch 2, I'm dead certain that the development of Dolphin will have played an indirect role in making it possible. Nintendo will never talk about that, of course—just as it wouldn't acknowledge that the hobbyist emulation boom of the '90s proved there was still interest in its older games for the NES that were no longer available for sale. Then along came the Virtual Console in 2006, proving that blooming nostalgia for older games could be monetized. In the same way iTunes took a bite out of MP3 sharing, the Virtual Console proved that when you're competing with free, convenience is vital, and the Virtual Console was extremely easy to use. Nintendo can claim it's lost money to pirated games played on emulators over the years, and I'm sure it has—but it also made millions of dollars by launching a service that emulation proved viable. Nintendo's just wrong Stifles innovation. The blatant lie or ignorance of that line just keeps eating at me. Fan-made emulators are responsible for pioneering features that are now considered must-haves in official emulators. Save states, for example: Best as I can tell the ability to instantly save and load anywhere debuted in Nesticle in 1997, though another emulator might've gotten there first. Save states are so commonplace today we barely think twice about why they became a standard feature, but when Nintendo included save states in the emulator for its NES Classic and SNES Classic, it was leaning on something innovated (or at least po[CENSORED]rized) by the fan scene. Running games at 2x speed is another staple—an emulation perk now deemed essential in remasters of old JRPGs like Final Fantasy 8. Without the po[CENSORED]rity of romhacks like kaizo Mario, would Nintendo have ever developed Mario Maker? That hack helped inspire a whole genre of "rage games" instrumental in the po[CENSORED]rity of speedrunning and Let's Plays. There are so many wonderful fan translations that simply wouldn't exist without emulators making it possible to pick games apart and see how they work. (Wait a second—is Nintendo just still really salty about Mother 3?) Some other game developers have seen the light: just recently Square Enix veteran Takashi Tokita highlighted that fan translations helped spread interest in RPG Live a Live, and it finally got an official western release with the new HD-2D remake 29 years later. Stifles innovation. What a ridiculous thing to say when a whole company, Analogue, exists thanks to the last decade of progress in software and hardware emulation. Analogue built a business around the idea of creating beautiful versions of old Nintendo systems like the Game Boy and NES that can run real game cartridges on circuitry that mimics the original consoles. Nintendo could've gone down this path, too, releasing stylish throwback Game Boys or Famicoms. I guess the company isn't interested in innovating when it comes to hardware. The most charitable reading of Nintendo's argument is that the company meant only "illegal emulators" actually "harm development" and "stifle innovation." But Nintendo doesn't deserve that charitable reading when it's argued for decades that any emulator it didn't make itself is illegal, despite the clear legal precedent to the contrary when they're engineered properly (Connectix, Bleem). Nintendo will always gloss over the technicalities, as it did just a week ago when it claimed Dolphin "illegally circumvents Nintendo’s protection measures" in its legal letter to Valve. As laid out by former Dolphin developer delroth, the legality of Dolphin including a decryption key in this context is unproven. Nintendo's lawyers can claim it's illegal all they want, but until they take the case to court and get a ruling, they're just demanding we take their word for it. And here's even more evidence that you shouldn't take everything Nintendo says as gospel: the same letter to Valve claims "Wii and Nintendo GameCube game files, or ROMs, are encrypted using proprietary cryptographic keys." The GameCube did not use a cryptographic key! GameCube copy protection came from the way its discs were made; the Wii was Nintendo's first console to implement a cryptographic key for encryption. If even Nintendo's own lawyers can get the technical details wrong, it's pretty clear that nothing about this discussion is as simple as the company likes to claim. If we're really worried about innovation, maybe we should be talking about our broken copyright laws, multibillion-dollar corporate mergers, and lifetime NDAs that prevent developers from talking about their work or problematic workplaces. Those all seem slightly more pressing to me than someone playing Mario on their PC. https://www.pcgamer.com/nintendos-claim-that-emulation-stifles-innovation-isnt-just-absurdits-hypocritical/

One of the big announcements at Apple’s WWDC 2023 was macOS Sonoma (we looked it up; it means “Valley of the Moon”). Apple claims the new operating system has a sharp focus on productivity and creativity. It says “the Mac experience is better than ever.” To prove it, the company revealed screensavers, iPhone widgets running on Macs, a gaming mode, and fresh video conferencing features. But the new macOS has another surprising feature for users of our pick for best free video editing software. Beyond WWDC’s bombshell reveal - yes, Snoopy is an Apple fan now - the event served up more than enough meat to keep users happy. There’s a new Macbook Air 15-inch on the way, said to be the “world’s thinnest.” The watchOS 10 beta countdown has started. And the Vision Pro is dividing opinion. Is the VR headset the future or will it lose you friends? The reveal of the new Mac operating system, meanwhile, feels quieter somehow. Muted. Perhaps new PDF editor functionalities and a host of “significant” updates to the Safari browser aren’t as eye-catching as a pair of futuristic AR/VR ski goggles. However, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said, “macOS is the heart of the Mac, and with Sonoma, we’re making it even more delightful and productive to use.” What he didn’t say, but the company later revealed, is that Sonoma adds an extra bonus for video editors. Designed for remote and hybrid in-studio workflows, the operating system brings a high-performance mode to the Screen Sharing app. Taking advantage of the media engine in Apple silicon, users are promised responsive remote access with low-latency audio, high frame rates, and support for up to two virtual displays. According to Apple, “This mode empowers pros to securely access their content creation workflows from anywhere - whether editing in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve, or animating complex 3D assets in Maya.” It also enables remote colour workflows that previously demanded the best video editing Macs and video editing PCs. It seems Final Cut Pro is getting a lot of attention lately. May saw the launch of Final Cut Pro for iPad - how did it take so long? - and now better support in the operating system. What next? Perhaps that open-letter from film & TV professionals pleading for improved support really did focus minds at Apple Park. https://www.techradar.com/news/our-favorite-free-video-editing-software-gets-unexpected-performance-boost-from-new-macos-sonoma
