Call of Duty: Warzone Season 3 is here and Activision has dropped a hefty slate of patch notes outlining all the changes we can expect in the battle royale’s next season of content. Coming in Warzone Season 3 is the return of a fan-favorite game mode, a couple of new Caldera locations, two new weapons, and an additional operator. There’s no sign of Godzilla or King Kong yet, but it won’t be long before the megafauna begin stomping about the place. Scroll down to read the patch notes in full, or read about the highlights right here. Caldera Iron Trials returns as a bonus game mode. Pitched as a more brutal experience, it reduces the rate of health regeneration, makes legendary weapons harder to find, and doesn’t include any free loadout drops. Plus, buy station prices are increased, although you’ll keep your cash after dying. There are a couple of new areas on Caldera to explore. The Dig Site is an abandoned excavation zone littered with the ancient remains of massive gorilla-esque and lizard-like monsters. The Peak, Runway, and Lagoon areas have also been updated with new buildings, hangers, and pathways, so they’ll look a little different from what you’re used to. The Gulag has changed, too. When you kick the bucket, you’ll now be transported to the interior of a ship moored just off the coast of the island. A nerf to snipers Two new weapons have been introduced: the M1916 semi-auto rifle and the Nikita AVT assault rifle. A bunch of handling tweaks have also been made to several existing weapons, while sniper rifles have been nerfed. Several snipers will now only one-shot players when fired up to a maximum of 90 meters from their target, and several won’t do so at all. “The long-standing ‘one-shot rule’ [has] unfortunately diluted the Sniper class into one important metric, speed to click heads,” the patch notes read. “Snipers may now use damage ranges as a defining characteristic of their one-shot potential. This not only brings more identity to each weapon but means attachments that provide the lighter and quicker sniper rifles the Damage Range stat will increase their ability to one-shot at increased distances.” A new Operator – Mateo Hernandez – has been introduced, too. He’s available instantly to anyone who purchases the Warzone Season 3 battle pass On top of that, there are a bunch of new gameplay features to dig into, including a bunch of new contracts, quality-of-life adjustments to deployable gadgets, and some tweaks to the loot that spawns across Caldera. Buy Stations will also no longer ask you to confirm your purchase, which should make buying weapons while the bullets are flying a little smoother. Finally, Operation Monarch is a limited-time event that will feature Godzilla and King Kong. The monster bash will feature a new Quads game mode and go live May 11 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm GMT, which is 2am AEST on May 12. Read on for the full patch notes, or check out how Activision’s new anti-cheat software is targeting hackers by trolling them. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: EVENTS New Event: Operation Monarch Operation Monarch, a special limited-time event featuring the iconic Titans of the Monsterverse - Godzilla and Kong, will introduce a new game mode for Quads inspired by several of Warzone’s best experiences to date. Operation Monarch will go live at 9 AM PT May 11. More information to come soon. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: MODES New Mode: Caldera Iron Trials The fan-favorite mode, Iron Trials, is back. This time on Caldera. Here’s a recap of the Iron Trials experience: General No free Loadout Drops ATVs, Tac Rovers, and Squad Transports only Buy Station prices are increased Cash retained on death increased Melee Finisher Damage capped at 150 Operators Base Health increased Health Regeneration Regeneration amount decreased Delay timer increased Starting equipment adjusted Loot Epic and Legendary Weapons are harder to find Killstreak drop rates are reduced Large Cash piles are harder to find Removed Field Upgrades Stopping Power Dead Silence Equipment Sniper Rifle single shots only down Players up to a maximum of 90 meters These ranges vary considerably between Sniper Rifles Stun Grenade stun duration decreased Medical Syringe regeneration rate decreased Gulag Exclusive Gulag Loadouts No Akimbo No Semi-Auto or Fully-Auto Shotguns Limited Tactical Equipment Players redeploy with remaining equipment Advertisement Plunder Adjustments Increased Carrying Limit Players had a hard limit in Plunder of carrying a maximum of $1.6 million. Whilst this is an extremely unlikely scenario, we wanted to make the system more robust for the minority of Players that achieve such a feat. Rebirth Resurgence Adjustments Players no longer spawn with Handgun Charlie (BOCW) as a starting Weapon WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: MAPS New Gulag: Hold A roughly symmetrical arena is based in the belly of a ship moored just off the coast of Caldera, with identical hallways on the perimeter of an otherwise open space. New Location: Dig Site Located between the Mine and the Ruins, Dig Site provides Operators the opportunity to rummage through abandoned excavation equipment, tents, and massive skeletons for Supply Boxes and other items. New Skybox A dark storm approaches... Updated Locations Peak New Constructs, Supply Boxes, Contracts, ascenders, and a fresh coat of paint. Runway New barracks, hangars, and other structural additions. Lagoon New sandbar, paths, and cover. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: GENERAL Private Matches Added Rebirth Resurgence Solos Added Rebirth Iron Trials Added support for new Rebirth Island features (Comms Towers and Weapon Trade Stations) in some Modes XP Token Accessibility XP Tokens can now be activated from in-game through the menu. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: GAMEPLAY Advertisement New Features “Sabotage” Contract Players will be given a vehicle target somewhere on the map. Destruction of the target will be rewarded with an Armored Truck Deployment via plane. Be warned, this Armored Truck can just as easily become someone else’s… High Value Loot Zones (In-Season) These zones are represented on the Tac Map by a very appropriate “$” sign and will provide the best looting opportunities. These zones will be complimented by Rebirth Supply Boxes that will provide recurring loot opportunities. With Season One, we introduced Public Events, like Cash Drops, during Infil to draw Players towards new loot locations. We have been happy with the results of these ‘honeypot’ opportunities but we want to take it a step further. Starting with Operation Monarch, we will be introducing “High Value Loot Zones” to provide new, fruitful opportunities for Players willing to take the risk. General Adjustments Gas Mask Will no longer interrupt a falling Player, thus allowing them to still be able to pull their parachute when falling to preserve their life. Won’t play animation when the Player is ADS and affected by the gas from Nebula V Rounds The Gas Mask remains a continued focus for our Quality of Life efforts. It plays an important role both in gameplay and the visceral Call of Duty feeling, but we felt that we had seen one too many videos of Players jumping from high heights into the Gas and the game incorrectly prioritizing the Gas Mask animation over the parachute… and we all know how that scenario ends. “Most Wanted” Contract Timer reduction via the following… Eliminating opponents reduces the timer by 20 seconds Opening Supply Boxes reduces the timer by 5 seconds We want this to be a Contract that both promotes and rewards aggressive play. Players can no longer use the Tac Map to ping an enemy Most Wanted target directly. We felt this method was unfairly punishing and provided too great a degree of accuracy that was almost impossible to be countered by the target. The refresh rate of the Most Wanted target on the Tac Map has been increased, to counterbalance the removal of the above ping. This brings balance and still allows tracking of the approximate location of the target. We reviewed the data for the Most Wanted Contract and we felt that improvements needed to be made to increase its engagement and success rate, whilst still retaining the all important risk/reward that it offers. “Bounty” Contract Speed increase to Tac Map refresh rate This is especially noticeable when a target is in a vehicle to better inform Players that a vehicle chase may be required. Deployable Buy Stations When a Player pings a Deployable Buy Station, there will now be dedicated audio/narration to better inform squad mates of the Players’ intentions. Redeploy Positioning Improvements Players who redeploy via Gulag victory or are bought back will now spawn in close proximity to their squad or Loadout. Advertisement Caldera Adjustments Loot that spawns across Caldera have been adjusted... Added Perks Battle Hardened Engineer High Alert Restock Tempered Quick Fix Scavenger Pointman (Plunder Exclusive) Notes: Only one of each Perk can be equipped at any one time. Lootable Perks can be pinged to communicate to your squad. Lootable Perks are additive to Loadout Perks. All Perks are unequipped on death but do not drop. We want to further increase the value and rewards of looting during the mid-game. It’s important for both pacing and movement in Battle Royale that there are always new rewards to be found for Players who rotate through locations for greater loot advantages, and our first step on this path is to bring single Perks into loot. From our internal testing, this change has brought a wealth of new Player stories and we will continue to roll out additional Perks in this manner as we review player feedback and data on how it improves the pacing and experience of Battle Royale. These lootable perks will launch first in Caldera, and then to Rebirth Island at a later date. Rebirth Island Adjustments Spawn Protection Improvements Removed the damage reduction scaling system that was based on ground distance System is disabled if a Player is near the ground or an opponent Players who have the shield icon will only take a flat 25% of the damage received Spawn protection will no longer reduce gas circle damage Whilst Spawn Protection plays an important role in any multi-life game mode, we felt it needed some extra refinement to make sure it cannot be exploited by Players. We will continue to monitor Player behavior in this area and make further changes throughout the season if required. Weapon Trade Station Adjustments Reduced Specialist Token drop rate We’ve enjoyed the engagement Players have been having with the Weapon Trade Station and the Specialist Token reward, but felt it was slightly on the high side so have made a reduction. The station will now look for empty space to drop your rewards We found it a bit annoying to pick up loot after you traded your weapon so we’ve polished this moment. The system will now always look for an empty space when dropping your rewards Advertisement Later this season… Footstep Audio Improvements We are looking to bring in additional audio improvements to footsteps during the season as a priority. Slide Camera Lock Improvement We have heard from our community that the camera lock that can occasionally happen while sliding down a vertical descent can be frustrating and lead to a negative outcome in a combat encounter. We are pleased to announce that this will be addressed soon. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: UI/UX Buy Stations No longer require confirmation when making a purchase The confirmation box when making a Buy Station purchase had good intentions, but we felt that the muscle memory had become so ingrained in Players to double-tap twice in succession. This was causing unnecessary friction in a potentially hostile combat situation, versus the unlikelihood of mistakes being made. We plan to make additional refinements to the Buy Station experience during the Season. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: BUG FIXES Fixed an issue causing incorrect Ping positioning when used on the Tac Map near Redeploy Balloons. Fixed an issue that caused Players to get stuck in AA turrets if they interacted with it at the same time it was destroyed. Fixed an issue that prevented carriable gasoline from being picked up while Dead Silence is active. Fixed an issue that allowed Players to glitch-carry carriable gasoline up ladders. Fixed an issue that was preventing skyhook balloons from receiving damage from certain explosives and thermite-based sources. Fixed an issue that allowed Players to have unlimited gas immunity when entering the area of effect of a PDS as it ends. Fixed an issue that caused Vehicles to receive less damage than intended. Fixed an issue that caused Players to be kicked back to the Main Menu when attempting to preview Vanguard Charms. Fixed an issue that caused Buy Station UI selections to reset to the top when attempting to scroll up. Fixed an issue that caused the Armaguerra 43 (VG) to have the same codename as another Weapon. Fixed an issue that caused Helicopters flying near Capital to be pulled towards the ground. Fixed an issue that caused the “Fenrir Unchained” Finisher to not be available in the Finishing Moves menu. Fixed an issue that caused Blueprint-specific Attachments for the “Purgatory Lost” Blueprint to not be available in the Gunsmith Customs menu. Fixed an issue that caused the "Mod. 3 10.0x Telescopic" Optic on the M1 Garand (VG) to appear blacked out when a Player would ADS. Fixed an issue that caused the Player’s view to be obstructed when using Park’s “Petal Pusher” Operator Skin. Fixed an issue that allowed Players to clip into stairs in a certain area of the map. Fixed an issue that resulted in the Armaguerra’s Botti DA Stock not receiving a bonus to flinch like intended. WARZONE SEASON 3 PATCH NOTES: KNOWN ISSUES Private Matches are temporarily disabled due to stability issues. Advertisement For a list of other known #Warzone issues, please check out our dedicated Trello Board. PROS Covers all nine, main Star Wars movies Hundreds of characters and vehicles Revamped combat and progression systems An open-world galaxy to explore CONS Previous Lego Star Wars fans may not be as imprssed. I remember playing Lego Star Wars games back in 2005, so like the Skywalker Saga that ended, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga ($59.99) the circle has now completed. Lego Star Wars as an IP has been this weird self-aware, child-friendly property that both fans of the toys and movies will enjoy. Suffice to say, TT Games’ comprehensive, kid-friendly recreation of the Star Wars galaxy is undeniably the biggest and best Lego game to date. The Sacred Texts Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga covers all nine, main Star Wars films. That’s a lot of material considering that each game "episode" runs about as long as each two-hour movie. Of course, the epic lightsaber battles and John Williams compositions are filtered through Lego’s charmingly comedic sensibilities. You can even turn on “Mumble Mode” to replace the spoken dialogue with grunts and noises from a slapstick silent film, like in the classic Lego games. While nine movies is nothing to sneeze at, we've seen most of this in previous Lego Star Wars games. The Skywalker Saga is a wholly original game, not some kind of remake, but the only fresh Lego Star Wars reinventions here are The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Speaking of which, your individual affinity for specific movies may also influence how much fun you have. The Empire Strikes Back will always be more exciting than The Phantom Menace, and even stripped of its thematic depth in toy form. The Last Jedi remains a wonderful, soul-stirring experience. Fortunately, you don’t have to play the movies in order. You must start at the beginning of a trilogy (Episode I, IV, or VII), but can hop around from there. With so many movies to draw from, the game gives you an absolutely massive roster with more than 300 characters and 100 vehicles to control. Make a squad featuring General Grievous and Kylo Ren as you fly across the galaxy in the freshly rebranded “Boba Fett’s Starship.” Quickly swap between available characters, so you’re always ready to become Emperor Sheev Palpatine. Cheat codes unlock even more choices, and DLC packs bring in characters from TV shows and side movies, such as The Mandalorian and Rogue One, respectively. This Is Where the Fun Begins The Skywalker Saga polishes typical Lego gameplay to a glossy plastic sheen. Most impressive is the amount of gameplay variety; in many ways, the game is like baby’s first introduction to common AAA mechanics. You’ll still do the Lego thing of breaking apart objects to build a puzzle solution. However, you’ll also take part in agile, Tomb Raider-style puzzle-platforming, or stealth sequences where you must dress up like Stormtroopers with all the grace of Hitman’s Agent 47. Whether playing solo or with a friend in local co-op action, you must take leverage your character’s abilities (typically determined by their class). Jedi use the Force to knock back enemy waves and lift items to new locations. As a protocol droid, C-3P0 translates unfamiliar languages. Rey creates new paths using her scavenger tools. Combat and puzzle sequences nicely flow into each other because you’re often using the same abilities in both contexts. Speaking of combat, Skywalker Saga saga significantly revamps Lego’s famously simplistic combat options. Drawing influence from third-person shooters and character action games, you can now accurately blast Droid enemies or engage Sith warriors in thrilling duels. You can build cover while shooting, or swap your blaster for a stronger one. Melee fighters must vary their high-flying combo attacks or opponents will block the offensive flurry. Stylish camera angles during boss fights add gravitas to conflicts, despite the toy façade. Show Me My Place In All This The action takes place in an open world, a format that Lego games have experimented with for years (including in an upcoming metaverse collaboration with Epic Games). You can freely walk around planets, such as Exegol, Naboo, and Tatooine, or fly between them while engaging in outer space dog fights. These large levels look fantastic, with many structures being made of destructible Lego bricks. Despite some initial confusion, the open world soon grew to be my favorite part of the experience. Side missions feel organic. Talking to the right, plucky droid soon became a titanic struggle against a First Order flagship, for example. I had to destroy the Tie Fighters outside, and board the ship to defeat the enemies inside, like a pirate in Assassin’s Creed IV. There’s even a dance party space station. You’ll collect Kyber Brick currency to upgrade stats, such as Health and Power, as you explore the world and complete mission. In addition, you can funnel points into the dark side to make everyone afraid of you. You don’t need to engage with this progression system, since these games have to be easy enough for children to play, but it does keep you invested even after you’ve finished the main campaign. In fact, the open world almost turns the main campaign into an afterthought. The linear action-adventure sequences, recreating movie moments like the Battle of Hoth or Death Star trench run, are great fun. However, they feel at odds with the freedom you expect from an open world. It turns planets into little more than glorified hubs where you run to the next marker to begin your next mission. Although there are some clever side missions, the campaign content makes up the bulk of the game, leaving the open world feeling underutilized. Beyond that, you must play through a campaign before you can visit its planets in the open world. Therefore, I wanted to get through the campaign as fast as possible to have a complete galaxy to explore in the postgame that I found more enjoyable. Even thinking about a postgame in a Lego game feels strange. Still, even without an open world, this campaign would stand out among Lego games. The open world just gives extra hours of awesome playtime I truly did not expect to receive. This is the way. The Force Will Be With You, Always Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s construction is a bit wonky, perhaps due to the increased scope. However, its pieces, from reliving nostalgic movie moments to creating your own adventures in the free universe, are some of the most fun you’ll have in a Lego game or a Star Wars game. https://me.pcmag.com/en/games/13656/lego-star-wars-the-skywalker-saga

A few weeks before the end of the season, Liverpool can still believe in the quadruple championship, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. Before the Reds, several teams have been in similar positions but many have failed down the home stretch. Neither Jürgen Klopp nor the Liverpool players want to talk too much about it at the moment, but the Reds are still in contention for a historic quadruple this season. Already winners of the League Cup at the end of February, Liverpool qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League, the final of the FA Cup and advanced to a small unit of Manchester City in the league. The dream is possible. But others believed it before them and stumbled in the final sprint. 2021: Manchester City stumble twice over Chelsea Just a year ago, we were already talking about a quadruple but this time for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. At the time, the Skyblues were walking in the Premier League and had plenty of time to focus on other competitions, but that was not enough. Winner of the League Cup against Tottenham, City had failed twice in just over a month against Chelsea, beaten first in the FA Cup semi-final then in the Champions League final, each time on the score 1-0. 2013: Benfica's two tragic weeks Benfica had perhaps the worst sequence in history, in May 2013. On the 11th, the Lisboetes, leaders of the championship, lost against Porto on a goal scored in added time and let their rivals take the first place, one game from time. On the 15th, they lost in the Europa League final against Chelsea, once again conceding the winning goal in added time. On the 26th, they lost the Portuguese Cup final against Vitoria Guimarães. The total. 2008: Chelsea in the shadow of Manchester United When an English club dreams of winning everything, it often has a compatriot not far away. City against Liverpool this year, Chelsea against City a year ago and Manchester United on the road to Chelsea in 2008. That year, the Blues were beaten on penalties by the Red Devils in the Champions League final. In the Premier League, they believe in the title until the last day but the misstep of MU does not happen. Chelsea ended the season empty-handed, also beaten in the League Cup final, while Ferguson's men did the double. 2005: Milan is scuttled There are disappointments that hurt more than others. In 2005, AC Milan held all the cards. He is leader of the championship until the 35th day, but gives up his throne by losing to Juventus. Two and a half weeks later, in the famous C1 final in Istanbul, Maldini and his band lead 3-0 at the break before seeing Liverpool come back and win on penalties. The Italian Cup is lost in March. 2002: Leverkusen sticks to his nickname Vice-champion of Germany in 1997, 1999 and 2000, Bayer Leverkusen received the nickname "Neverkusen" during this period. The German club will illustrate this to perfection at the end of the 2001/02 season. Bundesliga leader, Leverkusen stumbles on the penultimate day against Nuremberg, which plays its maintenance, and leaves the title to Dortmund. In the process, Michael Ballack's teammates lost four days apart against Schalke and Real Madrid, in the German Cup and Champions League finals. 1973: Juventus escape with a title Everything had started well for Juventus, crowned Italian champions on the last day. Thanks to a victory drawn at the very end of the match against AS Roma, the Turinese passed in front of AC Milan of Gianni Rivera, defeated in Verona. But ten days later, the Old Lady was beaten by Ajax in the Champions League final, then by AC Milan in the Italian Cup final. The Rossoneri get their revenge. Juventus has never achieved the Champions League-Championship double. https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/premier-league/liverpool-peut-tout-gagner-cette-saison-ces-exemples-a-ne-pas-suivre-pour-les-reds-dans-la-derniere-ligne-droite_AV-202204270454.html

Slowly stalking down the snowy hillside, the Amur leopard watches its prey through the trees. In the clearing below, a sika deer munches on tree bark, one of its few remaining food sources during the cold Russian winter. The leopard crouches, its body so low to the ground that its belly fur brushes the snow. Suddenly it bounds and springs forward, tackling the deer from 10 feet away. It’s dinnertime. BYSCOTT ELDER COMMON NAME: Amur leopards SCIENTIFIC NAME: Panthera pardus orientalis TYPE: Mammals DIET: Carnivore AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IN THE WILD: 10 to 15 years SIZE: 6 to 7 feet WEIGHT: 70 to 105 pounds COOL CATS Most people think of leopards prowling the savannas of Africa, but these spotted predators thrive in many different countries and habitats. Amur leopards can be found in the mountainous forests of eastern Russia and northern China. Named after the Amur River, a body of water that runs along the border of both countries, these cats are well adapted to this harsh environment. Their soft, dense fur keeps them warm in the bitter cold, and their large paws work like snowshoes to let them walk on snow without sinking. Amur leopards weigh about 80 pounds, some 30 pounds less than the average African leopard. But these cats can still take down prey up to three times their size. They prefer to feast on deer and boar, but will eat rabbits and mice if they can’t find bigger game. Scientists sometimes call Amur leopards the “silent killer” since they’re so good at sneaking up on prey. BOUNCING BACK Loss of habitat and poaching have made Amur leopards one of the rarest wild cats on Earth—and the world’s rarest leopard. Thanks in part to a newly established national park along the Russian and Chinese border, however, Amur leopards are clawing their way back. Since the 647,400-acre refuge dubbed Land of the Leopard National Park was created in 2012, the Amur leopard po[CENSORED]tion has jumped to about 80 individuals in 2018, up from only about 30 in the early 2000s. Officials believe that effective law enforcement in the park will help keep the po[CENSORED]tion climbing. So hopefully, even more of these leopards will be spotted soon. https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/facts/amur-leopard

A year after her husband Joe Hammond’s death from motor neurone disease, his widow reflects on grief, parenting through loss, and survival Gill Hammond Sat 30 Jan 2021 06.00 GMT How do you decide upon a day to die? For my husband Joe and me, that meant finding out when the doctors we needed were available, then we took note of our two sons’ school holidays and, finally, we looked at the carer rota for that month. Who could we trust with Joe’s death as much as we had trusted them with his life? The next step was a meeting with the relevant doctors; what incredible women they had been throughout our whole, surreal journey. They asked us how we imagined the process might unfold, during which Joe would receive a huge amount of morphine to sedate him enough that his ventilator could be removed. We were bemused. What were the options? Apparently, some people choose to watch television and the programme of choice is Countdown. This gave Joe and me the giggles. We said we thought we’d manage without more conundrums than we already had. When I first met Joe, he was wearing cord trousers, a blazer, a leather satchel and black-rimmed glasses. He looked like a University Challenge contestant. It wasn’t love at first sight; to be honest, my first impression was of someone who didn’t take risks in life. But I can tell you the moments that led me to fall in love with him: when, after knowing me only a few days, he walked across town to light a fire in my flat because I couldn’t get it started and there was a power cut. And a year later, when I watched him fling himself with abandon from cliffs and off the edge of waterfalls in Portugal. And many years later, when we stood at the stage door of the Royal Court theatre in London, stalking the actress Lindsay Duncan, so that Joe could hand her a letter and a script. She replied later that night to say she would perform his monologue, and she did. The first time he asked me, “What are you thinking?” I was perplexed. No one had really asked before and his tone made it clear that he really wanted to know. This simple question became integral to our relationship: I knew Joe would always tell me the truth, and that he would listen to mine – even if it was hard to say or hear. Joe always said that the work he did in schools for excluded boys, or in care homes for young people, was purely to finance his writing. But there are easier ways to earn money, and he kept ending up there. I think it’s because, in these places, honesty and trust are critical. Children see things with such clarity, and don’t stand for the bullshit that most of us churn out. It gave Joe a perfect training in parenting. Our son Tom is now eight and baffles me with atom facts. Apparently, if you took out all the space between and within the atoms we are made of, the stuff left behind would be about the size of an apple. Really? He astonishes me with words like “googolplex” [the number represented by one followed by a googol, or 10/100]. I demand to see Tom’s book. His three-year-old brother Jimmy is a solid force, whose warm hand and insistent need to play can bring me back when I am lost in existential drifts. “Let’s have pretend cake and put on a show with my animals,” he suggests. My wedding to Joe was on a beautiful September day. I had managed to persuade him that he couldn’t have the earthy, seemingly bottomless hole, surrounded by a flaking white picket fence, that he had wanted to dig in a corner of the field. Instead, he had conceded to the idea of turning his literal hole into a metaphorical one, in a reading he wrote for the service: “Just lean over the fence and take a look. You may even think you can see the bottom. But that won’t be the bottom. Just more hole.” After the wedding, and in the weeks and months that followed, people sidled up to me: “What was that poem all about?” And, “That’s a bit dark for a wedding, Gill.” I just smiled and silently acknowledged Joe’s dark vision that had enriched our day. It’s only now that I really understand. Ten years after our wedding, Joe was placed in a six feet-something hole. He had had motor neurone disease for just over two years when the end came. The hole into which he was lowered was the most vibrant white; the chalky South Downs became his place of rest. I laughed inside and wished Joe had known his tomb would be so bright. Motor neurone disease is cruel. It is a day-by-day journey towards paralysis. Each of Joe’s final days would bring a change and we would all shift, bend and bow towards the fresh challenge. For a long time, I was his sole carer, but, as he began to need more support, I was grateful to have care workers who could help. How do you mark the days before the last one of your life? The beauty lies in all the tiny moments Everyone told me that I needed not to be caring for Joe, but to be his wife. I had to think about what that meant. So many wifely things were long gone and the only thing left was to be by his side and share the many adventures of our boys. We still slept in the same room, Joe either in his electric wheelchair or hoisted into a hospital bed, while I lay in another bed. We’d both lie there in the dark. I would try to imagine what it felt like for Joe, to be losing his body. I would be so grateful for mine and try to feel the sensation of it as much as possible. Perhaps I could stop the fragmentation I felt and reassemble my own atoms to be more at home with all this nothing. How do you mark the days before the last one of your life? My top tip is to keep it simple. Our daily lives aren’t fanfares and parades. The beauty lies in all the tiny moments that are far more difficult to say goodbye to. The hand on a foot. The shared opinion on where the furniture should go. The stories of Tom and Jimmy’s day. The excitement at seeing a woodpecker. That final day was transformational in my understanding and acceptance of death. Death is coming to us all, and still there was an unteachable knowledge to be gleaned from Joe’s decision to allow it to come, to face it. I think many people’s understanding of death is no more nuanced than a Halloween-style dread. I know mine used to be. I would not have read this article, had I been flicking through the newspaper: unprepared to contemplate my own or anyone else’s death. There are many people, not least in my family, who have given me a very wide berth since Joe was diagnosed. It makes the kindness and determination of those who come closer even more meaningful. Why did Joe end his life? Because this disease wasn’t going to give up. Other people might have chosen differently, but for Joe, life had to have meaning. His increasing isolation from the world, and particularly from the boys, meant he did not want to continue. And he wasn’t afraid. I’m aware that Joe might be starting to sound like a man of pure virtue. He was as flawed as any of us and we had our difficulties. But tragic situations are incredibly revealing: they show us our most honest selves. Joe sifted through his life to bring close the people and things that mattered most. He channelled his energy into sorting out his affairs, both practical and emotional. He never asked, “Why me?” and told me there was no time to feel sorry for himself: valuable lessons for living. I have found grief like being in a washing machine. The door’s shut and the real world looks blurry through my concave door. Suddenly – and the timings are completely unreliable – you spin. Everything inside you becomes twisted and physically strange. It’s messy and soggy, and while you’re in there, there are still pants to pick up and T-shirts to turn outside in. The boys are doing OK. I worry, but Jimmy always seems so solid and connected to the world. His favourite game is “doctors with smoothies” and he regularly tends to his sick animals; Meercat and Spot the Dog are often in bandages or covered in cream. It’s beautiful to watch as he fixes, mends and listens to the woes of his little patients as he prepares pretend smoothies. Tom circles the world of grief very differently. Something tells me his brain is sifting through a googolplex of thoughts and that he has probably figured out a logical explanation for the madness of the last three years. He says very little, but astounds me with his kindness, his ability to talk about his dad, the nuts and bolts of our situation. I am finding it much harder than expected. Joe isn’t around in a convenient “spirit-like” presence, guiding me. (I had secretly hoped he would be.) So how do I keep his name alive? Where do I find Joe? I find him when I am cooking bacon without the fat on. I sense the roll of his eyes, and I laugh out loud when Jimmy wants to wear one of his ties to playgroup. I find him with my friends when they tell me the ways Joe amused or appalled them. And I find him when I lie, foetus-like, on his chalky grave. If I manage to let go of any self-consciousness and feel the earth beneath me, I am closer to him. Jimmy and Tom often make little earth mountains, with sticks and piles of stones, so it is not super comfortable. But being there feels right. For professionals who travel the roads day after day, the car is the center of attention. It must be practical, comfortable, connected and economical, so many points on which the Suzuki Swace is a winner. With a smartphone having become the central element of our personal and especially professional lives, the Swace had to be part of this digital continuity. This is done with Apple CarPlay compatibility for iPhones, Android Auto for Android phones and even Miracast. Barely installed in the Suzuki, all you have to do is connect your device to the USB socket located under the dashboard to automatically see the screen of the Swace become the extension of the smartphone. Compatible applications are displayed on the 8-inch touch screen and Suzuki features allow you to control the phone, in particular via the multifunction steering wheel. A press of the left thumb on the button activates the voice control function of the smartphone via the microphones of the Swace. A message arrives on the smartphone? His voice reading is broadcast through the car's speakers. The driver can thus remain connected to his colleagues, his customers without taking his eyes off the road or his hands from the steering wheel. Behind the shifter is a Qi wireless charging cradle for compatible smartphones. To each their own GPS application By chaining the kilometres, GPS guidance takes on crucial importance. It saves you time and energy, by selecting the fastest routes. And the announced arrival time is often relevant, which makes it possible to link appointments in an optimal way. It is for these reasons that the vast majority of drivers always use the same GPS guidance application, the one they trust and which is generally not the one offered by the car manufacturer, but rather an app available on smartphones. . Thus, whether with a company vehicle, a personal or rental car, the guidance solution always remains the same. On the strength of this observation, Suzuki has chosen a solution which could seem radical but which makes sense by not offering an on-board GPS guidance system, which will not necessarily be used anyway. Efforts have instead focused on the quality of compatibility between the car and the smartphone, thus leaving everyone free to choose the application that the driver wishes to use. Quiet and economical motorization On the motorization side, the hybrid technology of the Swace with its two motors (thermal and electric), provides very appreciable driving comfort. The switch between one and the other, which work either independently or in concert, is done automatically and completely transparently. You have to have your eyes on the indications on the dashboard to realize which engine is working. Apart from the important acceleration phases, the silence of operation is appreciable. And with its 100% electric driving mode, we move forward on a cushion of air. The Suzuki's battery can cover up to 2 kilometers with just this energy and without any CO2 emissions. Real comfort and good economy during parking maneuvers and other short-distance journeys, and for moving smoothly in traffic jams. No connection is necessary to recharge the battery. All the braking and deceleration phases provide electrical energy, as well as the internal combustion engine when necessary. Fuel consumption is limited to 4.5 litres/100 km and CO2 to just 109 g/km (combined WTLP values). The large loading volume of the Swace With the Swace, Suzuki took the opposite view of SUV fashion. But by choosing a station wagon body, the Japanese brand has taken the best of both worlds: volume and roominess combined with an aerodynamic design synonymous with energy saving. For a professional, chaining customer appointments requires having a certain loading volume. Presentation folders, sample boxes, promotional items, the size of the trunk is of crucial importance. With a rear space that increases from 596 liters in the 5-seater configuration to 1606 liters once the rear seats are folded down, the Suzuki Swace offers a substantial loading volume. The flat floor and wide, wide-opening tailgate make it easy to handle even the bulkiest objects. And in five-seat configuration, the removable luggage compartment cover, which retracts with a single button, conceals the contents of the boot for greater security. Finally, with a 60/40 folding rear seat, all passenger configurations are possible, whether 2, 3, 4 or 5 passengers, giving the Suzuki Swace great versatility to meet all situations. https://www.bfmtv.com/economie/professionnels/suzuki-swace-la-voiture-polyvalente-pour-les-professionnels_AO-202106070004.html

Police fired several times at traffickers who fled. No injuries are reported. A man was taken into custody after an anti-drug operation in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) during which police fired several times at traffickers who fled, according to information obtained from concordant sources. On a video and photos shared on social networks, we see men in civilian clothes shooting at a vehicle which jostles them while fleeing near an open blue truck, at the foot of which heaps of white bags are abandoned. "This morning, at the exit of the port area of Le Havre, individuals fled when the police arrived while they were transferring the load from a truck to another vehicle," said the prosecution. from Lille. "The criminals failed to overthrow a civil servant, so the police had to use their service weapons. No injuries are to be deplored," added the prosecution. Several bags of drugs seized According to a police source, the judicial police of Le Havre were monitoring a truck which they suspected of containing drugs "when a utility came to try to recover this merchandise". "The police intervened and the vehicle drove into them. They opened fire for their safety. About ten shots were fired. The vehicle was able to flee but was intercepted shortly afterwards with one person inside. She was taken into custody. Several bags of drugs were seized, presumably cocaine," added the same source. ON THE SAME SUBJECT A seizure of 680 kilos of cocaine in Le Havre Another police source said the person arrested was a man. The specialized interregional jurisdiction (Jirs) of Lille has taken up this investigation. https://www.bfmtv.com/police-justice/le-havre-un-homme-place-en-garde-a-vue-apres-une-operation-anti-drogue_AD-202204260705.html

Individual neurons in the human brain can efficiently perform so-called Boolean operations; a type of algebraic operations that include union, subtraction and intersection. Computing systems that emulate biological neurons, such as neuromorphic computing systems, however, typically require several devices to complete these operations. Researchers at Fudan University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently developed neuristors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials that can perform logic operations individually, without the need for multiple devices. These neuristors, presented in a paper published in Nature Electronics, could enable the development of better performing bioinspired computing systems. "In our previous work, we proposed a high-area-efficiency 2D transistor architecture that can realize photoswitching logic computing in a single cell," Peng Zhou, one of the researchers who carried out the study, told TechXplore. "The proposed transistor performs linear logic computing including OR and AND operations efficiently, but remains insufficient to realize nonlinear logic computing such as XOR and XNOR operations." Recent research findings suggest that a single human neuron is capable of nonlinear logic operations. The main objective of the study carried out by Zhou and his colleagues was to design a single electronic device that can mimic this nonlinear logic computing ability of individual neurons in the human brain. "Our neuristors for logic gates were designed with a dual-gate structure, employing 2D materials as channel materials," Zhou said. "Specially, we used different polarities of 2D materials including ambipolar-type, n- and p-type features in the neuristor to generate different logic operations. Therefore, one neuristor can function as one logic gate." To evaluate the device they designed and confirm its feasibility, Zhou and his colleagues fabricated logic half-adder and parity-checker circuits using a WSe2 neuristor and a MoS2 neuristor in a two-transistor two-resistor configuration. They found that the resulting circuits offered an area saving of 78% compared to circuits with a more conventional design utilizing MoS2 gates. "We demonstrated nonlinear logic operation by fully utilizing the ambipolar-type feature of 2D materials, hence the neuristors with different polarities can mimic the logic computing ability of a single human neuron for high-efficiency computing," Zhou said. "The feasibility of these neuristors was further validated by using them to demonstrate a small footprint logic half-adder and high-efficiency binary neural network." In a series of simulations where they ran a binary neural network based on a 3D XNOR array, the logic circuits created by the researchers achieved an energy efficiency of 622.35 tera-operations per second per watt and a power consumption of 7.31 mW. In the future, the neuristor and logic gates designed by this team of researchers could thus be used to develop neuromorphic computing chips that are smaller, more efficient and consume less power. "We demonstrate the logic library based on 2D materials with different polarities, such as MoS2, WSe2 and BP, and different neuristors generate different logic operations," Zhou said. "As a next step, we want to add the memory layer into the neuristor architecture, so that the polarity can be switched by the memory operations instead of materials type, which means that one neuristor would generate different logic operations." https://techxplore.com/news/2021-06-fabricate-logic-gates-based-neuristors.html

During a talk for the Ken Kennedy Institute’s 2022 Energy High Performance Computing Conference, Dan Stanzione, executive director of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), gave a status update on TACC’s forthcoming Leadership Class Computing Facility (LCCF)—a massive NSF-funded expansion of its supercomputing capabilities that will launch with a new flagship supercomputer, “Horizon.” “We have a lot of computers; they’re kinda large,” Stanzione explained, highlighting systems like Frontera (23.5 Linpack petaflops) and Stampede2 (10.6 Linpack petaflops) that rank highly on the Top500 and which support thousands of project teams. “Collectively, we have about 20,000 machines, we have over a million cores, we have a thousand GPUs, we deliver about seven billion core hours a year to our user community.” And it’s adding more all the time: Stanzione said that the graphics were just added to the new Lonestar-6 system the day before the talk. All of this computing firepower supports projects across the NSF’s domains. “Generally, if it’s unclassified and it’s open science and it’s at an academic institution we probably support it at this point,” Stanzione said. And the demand for more remains: “[At] the beginning of the center, we had had requests for about five times the computation we produced. We have about 80,000 times that much computing available now… and we get about five times the requests for the amount of time that we can produce.” “So apparently,” he reasoned, “demand for computing is invariant and not in any way dependent on the size of the computer you buy. So obviously, you should buy a bigger one.” Taking a leadership(-c Taking a leadership(-class) role Enter the LCCF and Horizon. Back in mid-2018, TACC won an NSF award to create Frontera (which, Stanzione said, is “technically phase one of the LCCF”), laying the groundwork for a longer-term leadership computing strategy. By the following year, word had gotten out that TACC was planning to follow up Frontera with a computer 10× as powerful around 2024. In 2020, TACC started talking more about these plans, calling the facility the Leadership-Class Computing Facility, shifting its target slightly to 2025 and releasing concept art for an expanded datacenter. The core pitch for the LCCF, Stanzione said, is “about coming up with a more sustainable way to invest in computing than one-off system competitions every four years.” Several times, Stanzione made reference to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), an NSF-funded computing center focused on weather and climate research. TACC, he said, wants “to be an anchor of the NSF computing environment in the way that NCAR is for atmospheric research.” Stanzione explained that the plan for the LCCF is to “actually start construction—fitting out a datacenter— …two years from today” (March 1, 2024), pending budgetary approval from Congress. Then, they’ll aim to deploy the LCCF’s flagship system in the first half of 2025, with science users on the system by the back half of 2025. After that: ten years of support for the center, from 2026 to 2036, with “maybe an upgrade in there,” Stanzione said. “We’ve never had more than four years of funding on an NSF system before as the initial commitment,” he stressed, citing NSF rules around the duration and renewal of its grants. “The reason I say we wanted to build an NCAR-like facility is because it’s been sitting there funded [by the NSF] in Colorado since 1957, so… perhaps my real challenge is figuring out, personally, how I was going to get around that limit that technically exists.” The flagship system will, Stanzione said, be named Horizon, “if DOE doesn’t steal that name and I don’t have to change it again when they put out a system.” (Regarding the LCCF itself: “I’m gonna give it a better name and a better logo before it’s over, but that comes later in the funding cycle.”) On the Horizon “You probably all wanted me to say what machine [we are] picking,” Stanzione said, “and I’m not going to, because honestly, I haven’t made a final decision, because the best way to be wrong is to tell people four years in advance what your computer’s gonna look like and what it’s gonna do. … Two years before we deploy, ask me what it’s going to be.” That said, Stanzione did go into some detail on the process of setting goals and attaining support for Horizon. “[Frontera] is getting old very quickly, so we need a follow-on, and the only written instructions are ‘10× faster!’” he said. “And we’ve had I can’t tell you how many hours of conversations over what 10× actually means in that context—is that application throughput? Is it peak application performance? Does it have anything to do with flops?” (“I’ve argued no,” he said.) He then broke down where they expect to get the 10× from. “10× in that time frame is challenging for a couple reasons,” he said. “One: if we look at the Frontera baseline, if we just did nothing but rely on vendor performance improvement … at best, over this five-year timeframe, maybe we’ll get 3× out of that,” mostly from increases in memory bandwidth. “But three is not 10.” Then, he said: “Buy more — that one almost always works … So we’re gonna double the budget over what Frontera was, and I got away with that, so.” That brings it up to 6×, leaving Horizon with a need to speed up by two-thirds. That remainder, Stanzione said, will be accomplished with improvements in software algorithms and methods. Bringing things up to code To that end, last spring, TACC solicited the research community to submit problems that they thought were core for future research problems and representative of problem designs in the supercomputing space. They received 140 proposals, whittling that down to 30, then selecting 21 to go forward for deep examination, looking to achieve significant speedups “and see where we can get.” The projects, which are funded to the tune of around $300,000 each, span mathematics, physical sciences, engineering, geosciences, life sciences and even the social sciences. “If all the codes were well-engineered and really good, I’d worry a lot about our ability to make improvements and hit the numbers,” Stanzione said, continuing: “All codes are not really good, well-clustered, well-engineered codes. Most of them are what we’d call ‘software.’” This code research, he added, would also help TACC sell the benefits of the LCCF and Horizon to decision-makers. “We know if we build a bigger machine, cool stuff’s gonna happen,” he said. “But I can’t sell hundreds of millions of dollars of investment on ‘cool stuff is gonna happen.’” Now, back to the hardware On the hardware front, Stanzione showed a laundry list of vendors under evaluation. “We’ve done a huge number of on-site evaluations, we’ve done others with partners,” he said. “We’ve looked at a wide variety of processor technologies … we’ve looked at various and sundry Arms, we’ve looked at NextSilicon … we’ve looked at a bunch of networking options … we’ve looked at a lot of the other, more exotic things with partner sites.” A non-exhaustive list of hardware under evaluation by TACC for Horizon Processors: AMD; Fujitsu Arm; Intel; NEC; NextSilicon; Nvidia Networking: Cornelis; Nvidia; Rockport Filesystems: BeeGFS; DAOS; VAST Node disaggregation: GigaIO; Liqid AI/quantum: Quantum (via Stanford); Graphcore (via Argonne National Laboratory); Cerebras (also via Argonne); SambaNova (also via Argonne) (“Argonne buys all these [exotic] chips,” Stanzione said, “so I just call Rick Stevens [associate laboratory director at Argonne] and say ‘how’s it going?’ rather than trying to emulate what they’re doing on that.”) Stanzione also said that they plan to add about 10 percent capacity to the core system to ensure that there is room for smaller testbeds and research projects when the main system is occupied. “We will define the size of the system,” he said, “and then I will lie about it, because we’ll buy more than that. … We’re gonna have this piece of the system that does the 10× piece and then we’re gonna have a bunch of additional racks to deal with all these other use cases that don’t count towards the capabilities.” Confounding these efforts, Stanzione said, an “unnamed program officer” had asked him: “what is the peak flops of the entire system if you include all those pieces?” “That’s the question you weren’t supposed to ever ask!” Stanzione exclaimed. “And now I have to make up an answer, because no one knows what the peak flops in 2025 are of any of these processors, let alone the achievable ones. So I wrote an answer and sent it back.” The hardware will be supported by an additional 15MW of power capacity, making TACC a 25MW facility. And, regarding that “maybe an upgrade in there” from earlier: “The idea is basically we’d buy a second system halfway through that [2026-2036] life,” Stanzione said, “so it’s two five-year lifespans.” He added that they would prefer to avoid a radical change in architecture between the two systems. For now, though, Stanzione and TACC are embroiled in what he said was the “terrifying amount of project management” required to begin building the new facility in two years. https://www.hpcwire.com/2022/04/14/tacc-looks-to-horizon-system-for-its-leadership-class-computing-facility/

Soulslike games are a weird little niche because while many games strive for the pacing, structure, mood, or raw challenge of From Software’s seminal Dark Souls, most of them are defined by the things they do differently. Most po[CENSORED]r Soulslike games can be summed up with “like Dark Souls but…”. Nioh is like Dark Souls but with Samurai, Salt and Sanctuary is like Dark Souls but 2D, Lords of the Fallen is like Dark Souls but not very good, and so on. These games sometimes aim for the atmosphere of a Souls game, or the mood, or the cryptic storytelling, or the overlapping level design, or just the unforgiving combat difficulty. I cannot recall a game that has succeeded, or even attempted to fully encompass the experience of playing a Souls game. And that’s exactly the sort of game Mortal Shell is. Developed by a rather small team at Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack, Mortal Shell isn’t just an homage to Dark Souls but a sincere and heartfelt letter to the Soulslike genre as a whole. It picks and chooses elements from across the genre, sometimes verbatim but most of the time making it their own to create something that feels unmistakably recognisable and refreshingly new. The similarities first. Mortal Shell puts you in control of a crumpled husk of a humanoid figure as they chart their way through a decaying world, taking on hostile forces, and horrible monsters in an attempt to make sense of their current predicament and the world itself. The armour is heavy, the combat is chunky, the atmosphere is thick. Attacking and dodging uses stamina, you drop all your currency on death, so far so Souls. However, what the team at Cold Symmetry understands about Dark Souls - that apparently no other developer seems to - is that the essence of the genre isn’t just in its atmosphere, level design, or difficulty. It’s in the sense of mystery and discovery. The opening hours of a Souls game are as slow as they are exciting. You move slowly through the world, taking in the sights, learning the sounds. You gently poke and prod at its systems to figure out what things are and how they work. Every new area, every new enemy, every new item you find in a Souls game feels substantial, because in a world that tells you nothing, every sliver of knowledge and context feels like a considerable advantage. Mortal Shell absolutely nails this feeling. The player character is a Foundling, a creature that looks like a cross between the Architects from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and whatever that creature was from the music video for Tool’s Schism. You start off weak but with lots of stamina. You can run about and attack with reckless abandon but you will die in one hit. This changes when you discover your first Shell, essentially the body of a deceased warrior which you can then possess to gain their abilities. These shells bring the first Big New Thing that other Souls games have hitherto lacks: character classes. See the shells aren’t just different bits of armour, but they each come with their own stats, strengths, and weaknesses. The very first shell you find, Harros the Vassal, is a relatively balanced Knight type that has balanced amounts of health and stamina and wields a greatsword. Other shells include Tiel the Acolyte who has lots of stamina and not much health, but is healed by poison. This made navigating the game’s opening area - a poison-filled swamp - a breeze because I could just clown on poison type enemies and walk through toxic environments without a hitch. The way these shells are leveled up is also quite a departure from the traditional stat-based progression of Souls games. When you find a shell in Mortal Shell, you only learn their abilities but not their memories, which means most of their knowledge and expertise is locked from you. As you fight enemies, you acquire Tar (think souls) and Glimpses (think humanity). Once you have enough, you can use them to regain some of your shell’s memories (their name, how they died, etc.) which in turn makes that shell stronger and unlocks new abilities. You can also upgrade each shell’s weapons to learn devastating special attacks that can really turn the tide of some of the tougher battles. I guess this means we can talk about the combat now. Once again, Mortal Shell aims to evoke the feeling of playing Dark Souls while doing something completely different. The combat looks and feels as weighty and deliberate as any Souls entry but is a very different beast mechanically. For one thing you don’t have a shield or even a traditional way of parrying enemies. What you do have is the ability to ‘harden’, which allows you to turn into a stone-like substance for a second. Hardening is extremely overpowered because it will block any attack (even from bosses) and will almost always stun the enemy. You can also harden part way through an attack animation to add some nice delays to your attacks and throw off the enemy. The catch? It’s on a pretty hefty cooldown. Very soon you acquire an item called the Tarnished Seal that lets you parry incoming attacks a la Sekiro. Parrying in and of itself has no use other than to stun the attacking enemy and buy you a few seconds to retreat and consider your next move. As you fight and damage enemies, you fill up a meter called Resolve which you can use to unleash devastating special attacks and executions. When you have enough resolve, you can go from the parry into a special execution move that does extreme damage to the enemy while regaining some of your health. The game also has a Sekiro-esque second wind system where running out of health knocks you out of your shell instead of straight up killing you. This reverts you to your initial fragile form. You could, however, get back to your shell and put it back on, which fully refills your health and stamina. If you run out of health a second time, you die for real and have to run back to your corpse to recover all your Tar and Glimpses. Should you die before being able to recover them, you lose them for good. This gives a combat a very unique rhythm where you’re alternating between all-out attacks to build up resolve, hardening to block damage, and dodging to avoid damage. Being able to get a second wind isn’t just something that happens, but actively anxiety-inducing as you scramble to get back into your shell before someone strikes the killing blow on you. Beyond the combat, Mortal Shell evokes Dark Souls in one other major way: the way it handles items. Items in this game come with weird, vague instructions that tell us little to nothing about what they are or what they do. The only way to know what an item is and does is by consuming it. Every time you consume an item, you increase your ‘familiarity’ with it by 1, with the final level doubling its effects. A mushroom that heals a bit of your health, healths twice as much when you max out your familiarity with it, for instance. This is a double-edged sword however, as sometimes the item you’re using just to find out what it is, may be poison (yes, this happened to me, don’t eat Wolfsbane). Recovering your health in Mortal Shell is already a fool’s errand since it doesn’t give you a dedicated healing item, so losing a chunk of it just from test-eating an item gets a bit too close to feeling cheap. Also, you can play the lute in this game. I can’t really find a logical way to work it into the flow of my arguments, but you can play the lute in Mortal Shell and it is excellent. There is a blight on this town, however, and that is the game’s overall technical state. The game crashed on me thrice over the approximately 30 hours it took me to beat it. Thrice is not too high a number but in a game like this where each mistake can lead to devastating loss, ill-timed crashes can be the difference between a win and a rage quit. I also experienced a lot of frame drops and couldn’t get the game to run smoothly despite tinkering with all of the settings on a computer that far exceeds its requirements. The hit detection on enemies goes completely haywire if there’s even the slightest difference in elevation between the player and an enemy, and I found myself inadvertently following an enemy down a chasm more often than I care to count. https://me.pcmag.com/en/gaming/12703/mortal-shell
