From the Finding Nemo-esque logo and the bulbous eyes of the sharks, you might get the impression this is a family-friendly romp where you munch through the ocean like a sea-faring Pac-Man, accruing points and combos as you go. Which is pretty accurate, apart from the ‘family-friendly’ bit – Hungry Shark World is gleefully, ridiculously blood-thirsty. This side-on gobbler is the latest in a successful mobile series from Ubisoft studio Future Games Of London. Originally released in 2016, it’s been reworked for consoles to remove microtransactions with an XP system. This works well enough, although it takes longer than you might expect to get to the newer environments. Your goal is to survive as long as possible, complete missions and score points to unlock bigger, badder sharks and move around the globe to four different feeding grounds. Controls are simple – the left stick moves your shark and ‘ZR’ activates a brief speed boost linked to a meter that recharges after a few seconds. A life meter steadily depletes when you’re not devouring marine life, forcing you to eat continuously. Swimming into smaller fish is enough to ingest them, but larger prey – such as harpoon-throwing divers, dolphins and even other sharks – require a little more mastication, activated with ‘ZL’. Movement feels somewhat imprecise at the beginning and we occasionally wished we could zoom out a tad to get a better view of the surroundings – it can be difficult to make out your position when things get busy. The touchscreen would have been useful on menus, but at the time of writing, there’s zero touch support on Switch – strange considering the game’s smartphone origins. It’s hardly a visual showcase either, but environments look pleasant enough. You’ll find the ocean teeming with life, human and otherwise. There’s a whole host of collectables, from treasure chests and maps to floating letters and fossils. Hitting ‘Y’ brings up a map with important locations highlighted and a list of missions for your current shark – each one has ten to complete. These vary from things like ‘Survive for four minutes wearing a pirate cravat’ to ‘Eat 30 dolphins in a single swim.’ Fulfilling these requirements unlocks more accessories for purchase and new, larger sharks which can destroy underwater barriers enabling you to explore further. Upon selecting our starter porbeagle (nearly all the sharks are based on real-world fish, although the realism stops there), we dived in, immediately encountered an idle bather and started gnawing on him. It took a while but soon a cloud of blood appeared as he wailed “I don’t wanna die!” in a cod-Australian accent and we shot off for our next meal. Soon we were purchasing comedy moustaches, clown noses and hula skirts using in-game gold and recruiting baby sharks to accompany us on our deadly sprees. All this gear comes with perks giving percentage increases to speed, bite radius and other stats. But why stop at the ocean when there’s a veritable buffet of delights to devour above the surface as well? Nowhere is safe from your mindless eating machine and the developer doubles down on the game’s glorious absurdity in the name of score-chasing fun. A meter gradually fills as you eat, eventually initiating a Gold Rush that turns tough, chewy prey to butter and earns you big points. Every so often a Mega Gold Rush will trigger, enabling you to scoff down entire whales in mere moments. Keep going and you’ll turn giant and eat everything on screen. Fun as it is, optimisation problems spoil the experience. Load times are lengthy – over 40 seconds from menu to gameplay. More egregiously, upon death you’re sent back to the main menu via another loading screen – 15 seconds this time. Instant retries aren’t available which, for a quick-fire score-chasing game, utterly destroys your momentum. Unfortunately, technical issues don’t stop there. We experienced several crashes throughout our review. This is obviously infuriating when you’re in the middle of chasing a big score and again it highlights not only the crippling load times, but also the repetitive nature of the gameplay. When you’re in the middle of a feeding frenzy, each multiplier is enough of a dopamine hit to keep you playing, but being pushed out to the Switch’s main menu makes you wonder if ‘just-one-more’ is worth it. The obvious optimisation issues with the port are disappointing – Switch should handle this with no problems whatsoever. Hungry Shark World Review (Switch eShop) | Nintendo Life

Capcom's hit action-packed series Devil May Cry has finally made its mobile debut. From NebulaJoy, Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat features gorgeous graphics and features characters and locales from other entries in the franchise. Playing as Dante, Lady, Virgil and others, you'll battle fierce demons and explore a gothic world. In Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat, Dante and Lady must stop the demonic invasion of Earth after the King of Demons shows up. You'll chase Nevan through a library infested by demons, brave the wintery Zephyr Plain and more as you attempt to stop the invasion once and for all. The storyline is compelling while taking little time away from the core gameplay. EPIC COMBAT If you were worried Devil May Cry's signature combat wouldn't transition well to mobile, worry no more. Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat offers compelling, fast-paced battle sequences that both longtime fans of the series and newcomers will enjoy. The game features the fluid combat and strategy skills familiar to fans of the series. While combat may not be as intricate as in console Devil May Cry games, the essence of the series' iconic battle system shines through. Each character has a basic attack, secondary attack, QTE, style skill, and ultimate skill, which you can combine in battle for devastating effects. Additionally, each character has a passive skill, like Spark Igniter Lady's Aggressive Attitude skill, which increases the Spark Igniter's fire damage by five per cent, and an evasion/jump skill. Using your evasion/jump skill lets you complete sweet aerial combos. Additionally, the game rates how you perform in battle from S to F, adding a nice retro feel. COLLECT HEROES During battle, you can seamlessly switch between your three equipped characters. Dante swings his sword with grace and precision while Lady mainly attacks with her gun. You'll start the game with Demon Hunter Dante but soon gain access to Swift Arsenal Lady. Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition review As you play, you'll earn Gems, which you can use to summon new heroes and equipment. There are different versions of Dante, Lady, Vergil, Nero and V for you to collect and add to your arsenal. Each character features a signature look and unique skill set. Swift Arsenal Lady's QTE is Spatial Explosion, while Spark Igniter Lady uses the Storm Blast QTE. With different skills to try out and gorgeous character designs, you'll have a blast collecting each version of every character. Besides upgrading the characters themselves, you'll also need to upgrade their weapons and skills. You can also equip characters with cards that offer bonuses such as increasing fire damage, HP, critical damage, or attack. Equipping multiples of the same card to a character also increases the bonus. For example, equip 2 Hell Pride cards to increase attack by twenty on top of the cards' unique bonuses. What's interesting about the card mechanic is that cards with the same name can have different bonuses, so you'll need to pay attention when equipping them. PIZZA TIME One of the few downsides to Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat is that the game uses an energy mechanic for battles that are often found in mobile gacha games. To enter battle, you'll need enough stamina, represented in-game by pizza. Stamina (or pizza), like energy in other games, regenerates over time. However, if you're trying to get into battle, you can convert 200 gems into 60 stamina, which should be roughly enough for two battles. Sadly, Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat doesn't shy away from suggesting you make an in-app purchase to keep playing, which is disappointing. On the plus side, you should be able to complete a few chapters worth of content before worrying about stamina regeneration. Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat is a truly entertaining mobile action game. The stamina system can be a bummer when you are deep into a gaming session and can't continue unless you pay up or are willing to convert your gems into stamina. Still, the game's combat is fluid, fast-paced and furiously fun. Likewise, the graphics are stellar, and you'll enjoy collecting each variation of Dante and the other heroes. Whether you're a newcomer to the world of Solo Leveling or a diehard fan of the manhwa and webtoon series, you're in for a thrilling ride in the third-person action adaptation, Solo Leveling:ARISE. You'll find yourself stepping into the shoes of the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, as he embarks on a journey from being the lowest-ranked hunter to becoming an unrivalled hero. As you tread the path of Sung, you will experience first-hand the sense of development and growth that the character goes through. In Solo Leveling: ARISE, the storytelling approach is a blend of cinematic animation, visual-novel style narration, and manhwa-like illustrations, creating an immersive gaming experience. Added to this are the Gates — a series of daily trials that are crucial for character upgrades, though you can buy more keys to have more goes. These are your main resource for levelling up both Sung and the other characters you’ll obtain. They've also thrown in an auto-fight feature in the Gates, a welcome addition for those trying to balance their gaming time with other tasks, and if you’re finding them too challenging, you can always look for easier ones. You can have a party of up to four, depending on the mission, so you will usually rely on the gacha system to get new party members. They’re very, very rare, though, so you’ll wind up with more weapons than characters easily; at least the gacha tickets are easy enough to come by, even without buying them through in-app purchases, so you can keep trying. You may be thinking that I was given some premium currency or gacha tickets to write this review… well I was told to expect something, but at time of writing, they hadn’t shown up. In fact, the microtransactions had also seemingly not been implemented, so I can’t comment on the value for money that they may or may not be. Somewhat annoyingly, the version that I got to play earlier this year only went up to Chapter 7, and after days of grinding in this version I’m still only in Chapter 8! So I’ve been waiting all this time to find out what this “Arise” mechanic that publisher Netmarble has mentioned multiple times in marketing material is about, and I still don’t know because it opens up in Chapter 9! I’ll admit to being impressed with how much side content is available in Solo Leveling. There are extra side stories to give players more information on side and minor characters, the aforementioned Gates, Encore Missions, Battlefield of Trials, and more modes which unlock after certain chapters. These give extra challenges, and more reasons to keep playing every day due to keys resetting. There is also an Event, which at the time I was playing for review was Rock, Paper, Scissor, and I assume it changes frequently. You had a certain number of each, as did the opponent, and you’d have to win to get prizes. It was certainly novel! However, the game did have some hitches. Navigating through the game menus can feel slow as the game seems to need to think about things just a bit too long at times. I also experienced a couple of crashes meaning I had to restart the game, log back in, find out if my progress had been saved (it had)... There also isn’t a lot of variation in gameplay, with each mission and mode basically being a different difficulty of the same things that had come before it. Despite these minor setbacks, Solo Leveling: ARISE brings a compelling narrative (which will be familiar to fans), solid gameplay mechanics, and lots to do to the table. The underdog tale of Sung Jinwoo is sure to keep you hooked if you’ve been wanting more. Hopefully they don’t screw it up by altering things post-launch and adding lots of microtransactions. The Galaxy S24 series introduced several artificial intelligence features. Samsung collaborated with Google for the feature called Circle to Search. Interestingly, a very similar feature is now rolling out to iPhone thanks to iOS Shortcuts and Google Lens. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users can now easily activate this visual search feature using the action button. Google Lens has been available on iOS for quite some time now. Minsang Choi, design manager at Google Lens, mentioned that iPhone users can now enjoy a visual search experience similar to Android's Circle to Search through the Google app. The process involves taking a screenshot within the Google app and then using Google Lens to analyze the image. For older iPhone models that do not have the action button, users can still activate the visual search feature using the Back Tap gesture. Recent iPhone models support tapping the back of the device to activate a shortcut. This can be enabled in Settings > Accessibility > Tap, where users can choose Double Tap or Triple Tap on Back Tap and assign a shortcut accordingly. Once set up, users can activate the feature by tapping the back of their iPhone. In addition to faster searches for visuals, Google's in-app shortcut now makes it easier for iPhones to use Google Lens to copy and translate text from images. Earlier this year, Google introduced the Circle to Search feature, initially exclusive to Android and available only on the Google Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 models. Google and Samsung have since expanded this feature to include many older models. According to Google, the main difference between Circle to Search and Google Lens is accessibility. Circle to Search is universally accessible on Android and can be activated with a simple gesture or by long-pressing. However, both features use optical character recognition (OCR) technology. A Google executive mentioned in a podcast that Circle to Search is essentially a refined version of Google Lens, optimized for specific purposes on Android.
