The United Nations has warned that Afghanistan is at risk of “total breakdown” of the international community does not find a way to keep money flowing into Afghanistan despite concerns over the Taliban government. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said in a report released on Thursday that about 97 percent of Afghanistan’s po[CENSORED]tion may sink below the poverty line unless the country’s political and economic crises are addressed. But the UN special envoy on Afghanistan Deborah Lyons told the Security Council on Thursday that a way needed to be found to get the money into the country “to prevent a total breakdown of the economy and social order” noting that Afghanistan was facing a storm of crises including a plunging currency, a sharp rise in prices for food and fuel and a lack of cash at private banks. The authorities also do not have the funds to pay salaries, she said. “The economy must be allowed to breathe for a few more months, giving the Taliban a chance to demonstrate flexibility and a genuine will to do things differently this time, notably from a human rights, gender, and counterterrorism perspective,” Lyons told the 15-member Council, saying safeguards could be devised to ensure the funds were not misused. Foreign donors led by the United States provided more than 75 percent of the public expenditure for the Afghanistan government that crumbled as the US withdrew its troops after 20 years in the country. President Joe Biden’s administration has said it is open to donating humanitarian aid but says that any direct economic lifeline, including unfreezing the central bank assets, will be contingent on Taliban actions including allowing safe passage to people to leave. The first civilian flight out of Kabul – carrying more than 100 passengers – landed in Qatar on Thursday The International Monetary Fund has also blocked the Taliban from accessing some $440m in new emergency reserves. “The Taliban seeks international legitimacy and support. Our message is simple: any legitimacy and support will have to be earned,” senior US diplomat Jeffrey DeLaurentis told the Security Council.
  4. A lioness has undergone a three-hour dental appointment and root canal treatment to save two canine teeth. Mo, an 18-year-old from Africa Alive zoo at Kessingland in Suffolk, was anaesthetised earlier under the care of a specialist vet. It is not always easy to tell if a lion has toothache, staff at the zoo said, but the operation went well and she was recovering. "It's like human dentistry - just on a larger scale," the zoo said. "Animals mask pain very well, and there was nothing to indicate that Mo was having toothache," said Haylee Parker, from the zoo's animal management team. "But there were little things that staff noticed, as they're with her all the time. A root canal procedure was decided upon and Miss Parker fired the tranquiliser dart into the lioness. "We left it for about 30 minutes until we knew it had taken," she said. "Everything has been drilled out right down into the root and it's then packed out to make sure everything's going to be hygienic and sterile. "It's like human dentistry - just on a larger scale." The zoo's own vet was there, as well as specialist dental vet Gerhard Putter and his own veterinary nurse. "We've removed the source of the bacterial infection which is the important part."   6. The new Tesla Model S Plaid has set the fastest laptime for a production-spec EV at the Nurbürgring, according to company CEO Elon Musk. According to Musk on twitter, the new 1006bhp range-topper lapped the 12.8-mile Nordschleife circuit in 7mins 30.909secs - 12 seconds quicker than the previous record lap set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo in 2019. The Tesla's average speed was 103mph. A modified Model S Plaid will now seek to cut that laptime further, with "added aero surfaces, carbon brakes and track tyres" among the enhancements suggested by Musk. He said Tesla does not need to be "in the loop" for this next attempt, suggesting it has partnered with a tuning company in the pursuit of setting more lap records. The Plaid powertrain arrives as part of the most substantial update for the Model S since it went on sale in 2012. It is also available in the larger Model X SUV, which has also been refreshed for 2021. The Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid take 1006bhp from a tri-motor electric powertrain, which in the Model S is good for a claimed 0-60mph time of 1.99sec, 0-155mph in a quarter of a mile and a 200mph top speed "with the right tyres," according to CEO Elon Musk. The larger Model X Plaid needs 2.5sec to complete the 0-60mph sprint, but that still gives it the "quickest acceleration of any SUV". However, the 1100bhp Plaid+ version of the Model S, which would have bumped range up from an estimated 390 miles to more than 520 miles (on the US EPA test) - more than any EV currently in production - and further cut the 0-60mph time, has been officially cancelled. Taking to Twitter earlier this year ahead of the Plaid's launch, Musk said: "Plaid+ is canceled. No need, as Plaid is so good." He called the standard Plaid the "quickest production car ever made of any kind" and confirmed a sub-2.0sec 0-60mph sprint time. To officially claim that title, the Model S Plaid will need to beat the new Rimac Nevera hypercar's 1.85sec 0-62mph time. The Plaid+'s cancellation came following a month of speculation, since Tesla quietly stopped taking pre-orders for the 2022 model in May. It hasn't been publicly disclosed how many customers had placed deposits. The Plaid powertrain is described by Tesla as "beyond ludicrous," in reference to the Ludicrous Mode function that gives its cars stand-out acceleration capabilities. The update also brings new battery technology for improved range and efficiency. Precise technical details are yet to be confirmed, but new thermal architecture gives faster charging and gives "more power and endurance in all conditions". Inside, the Model S and Model X have been completely overhauled, with the old vertically oriented touchscreen making way for a new 17.0in widescreen display that offers "exceptional responsiveness" and can be tilted from left to right to give easier access for passengers or drivers as needed. There's also a new, separate 8.0in infotainment touchscreen mounted at the rear of the centre console, giving back-seat passengers access to various entertainment and comfort functions. Perhaps most notable is the introduction of a new steering wheel design that's seemingly modelled on those used to steer aircraft. Tesla calls it a "stalkless steering yoke," having done away with the conventional driving-mode and indicator stalks, relocating these controls to the large new central touchscreen. The car "guesses drive direction based on what obstacles it sees, context and nav map," according to Musk, but this can be manually overridden. This device has been deemed legal for use in the UK and Europe, but a conventional round steering wheel will also be available. Software updates include the infotainment system being upgraded with a processing power of 10 teraflops, which means the Tesla Arcade gaming function is now comparable in terms of functionality with modern gaming consoles. A 22-speaker, 960-watt audio system is equipped as standard and new microphones have been fitted to offer active noise-cancelling. Deliveries of the new cars will get under way in the UK in 2022, with prices starting at £83,980 and £90,980 respectively for the entry-level Long Range versions of the Model S and Model X. Prices climb to £110,980 for the Plaid versions of each.

Mr Johnson's spokesperson called the decision "absurd, misguided and wrong". However, the charity insisted it was not "disowning Sir Winston" and said its former name was "confusing to people and did not explain what we do". On a statement on its website, the charity said: "The key element we kept was the name 'Churchill' - you cannot look at our new logo and avoid the importance we attach to that name." It added that Sir Winston was internationally admired for "saving Britain and the world from Nazism" but there was also "controversy about his views on race". Mr Johnson has long been an admirer of Sir Winston and has written a biography of the Conservative politician. Asked about the charity's decision, the Downing Street spokesperson said: "The prime minister believes Winston Churchill is a hero" adding "there is a never ending political debate about who is sufficiently pure and politically correct." He urge the charity to "think again and not try to re-write the past". The Churchill Fellowship - which is chaired by Sir Winston's grandson - offers grants to enable people to study practical topics abroad. Sir Winston is often described as one of the country's greatest prime ministers for his role leading the country against the Nazis during World War Two. He is credited with maintaining morale during a difficult time for the country and refusing to negotiate with Adolf Hitler in the early years of the war.   9. An adventurous seal managed to find its way into a shocked homeowner's back garden. The woman awoke to find the inquisitive female - known locally as Dandy - lounging on her patio in Billinghay, Lincolnshire. RSPCA rescuers inspected the amphibious mammal and, finding she was perfectly healthy, returned her to the water. Dandy previously caused a stir when she gate-splashed a paddleboarding lesson on a river in Boston. PC Martin Green, from Lincolnshire Police's wildlife team, said a friend called him to say "his mum had woken up and found the seal on the patio". He said Dandy had apparently clambered up a riverbank before entering the garden. When he arrived, PC Green said, the seal had made its way from the patio area and was sprawled out on the lawn. "We checked her over and she was perfectly fine," he said. A landmark report by UN scientists has been described as a "code red for humanity", as it details grim realities such as rising sea levels, and more intense and frequent heatwaves. A recent survey - which included over half a million 14 to 18 year olds - suggests people are in favour of policy changes to boost renewable power and sustainable jobs. But on an everyday level, what can we actually do? How can we make a difference when it seems like everything has a bad impact on the climate? Radio 1 Newsbeat has been chatting to sustainable bloggers for tips on easy changes we can make to help reduce our impact. The first is not to beat yourself up if you forget your bag for life or your reusable cup - it will probably just add to your eco-anxiety. "I never had the notion that I had to be perfect," says Shia Su from zero-waste blog Wasteland Rebel. "I had no intention of going zero-waste. I read about it and I just thought it was cuckoo and unrealistic," she says. But one day she decided to take a jar to her local coffee shop instead of asking for a takeaway one - and she grew greener from there. So how did Shia get to the point where she now says she can fit her entire year's waste into a litre-sized jar? Her second tip - shared by most of the bloggers we spoke to - is about turning your good intentions into good habits. Do whatever you can, and after a while it will become a habit," she says. "Normally, when you leave the house you grab your phone, you grab your wallet, you grab your keys. "After a while you'll grab your bottle, your food container and then you're good to go - it will become a habit." And the third tip that all our bloggers share is probably the one which involves the biggest change. It's about living a minimal lifestyle - cutting out needless buys. Go vintage: "Do things like shopping second-hand and vintage, going to your local charity shop. You can also buy on sites like eBay and Depop." Buy less: "If you can, just not shopping at all is a really great way to do it. Embracing what you already own and what's already in your wardrobe. There's a great phrase you hear a lot: 'Loved clothes last'". Look for eco-friendly materials: "Look out for more natural fibres - go for cotton over polyester. Not only do they feel a lot nicer when you wear them, but don't contain things like microfibres that go into our water and into marine life when we wash our clothes." Learn to DIY: "It doesn't take much to learn how to hand-sew and stitch up a hole. Or if you have a pair of ripped jeans that are becoming a bit too ripped, you could always cut them and keep them as shorts." Consider a more plant-based diet: "I don't think everyone has to go vegan to make a huge change. The more realistic thing is for the majority of people cutting down meat consumption to a couple of days a week." Eat as seasonally as possible: "If you're eating tomatoes from the UK that aren't in season, then you know they've been grown in some huge greenhouse that uses a massive amount of resources to basically fake the weather. So you're using a massive amount of heat energy to grow the tomatoes out of season." Think about packaging: "There are zero-waste shops where you buy unpackaged food. But you can also go to the supermarket, and make better choices by buying unpackaged fruit and vegetables, or opting for cans and cardboard that are widely recycled instead of plastic. So there are better choices that you can make in regular shops." Beauty Nicole Whittle - AKA VeganBeautyGirl - blogs about living a vegan life. Ditch the face wipes: "Just use a good old flannel like your nan's got in her bathroom, and a nice oil-based cleanser to help break down make-up at the end of the day. If you've got a baby and you need that on-the-go reliability, then you can find biodegradable wipes." Buy package-free: "You can get shampoo, conditioner and body wash bars - they might cost a bit more but they last much longer. So the cost-per-use is a lot lower." Think about your menstrual products: "Tampons and pads are single-use items, and not everyone disposes of them properly. The big change you can make is going to a menstrual cup, which is a silicone cup that catches all the blood and can be reused each month - they're not as scary as they sound. There's also menstrual underwear these days which is a lot more sustainable." Big brands can also be eco-friendly: "A lot of the big beauty brands are really taking inspiration from the vegan environmental movement. It's great to see these changes happening. It's taken them a while but these brands have seen that there's future in these sorts of products." Travel Florine Hofmann runs The Wasted Blog, where she tries to find eco-friendly alternatives to everyday habits. Think about your journey: "We're so fortunate here in Europe - I usually try to take the train whenever I can. I'm conscious of trying to fly as little as possible." Pack sustainably: "I recently bought a second-hand suitcase because it was already something that was made, and it was cheaper. I try to pack as minimally as possible - for instance my toiletries I try to reduce to soap and a shampoo bar, stainless steel razor and toothbrush. I don't want that much plastic trash in another country. I try to leave as little behind as possible." Plan where you eat: "I usually do some research beforehand. I'm a massive foodie, so it's very important in my everyday life. But also because I want to support restaurants for instance that do think about their waste or whether they compost or not." William Burns, in a quiet trip to India, held talks with Ajit Doval in New Delhi on Tuesday (File) Islamabad: US' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns on Thursday met Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) head Lt General Faiz Hamid during which they discussed issues related to regional security issues and the current situation in Afghanistan, the Pakistan military said. The meeting was held after the Taliban on Tuesday unveiled a hardline interim government with at least 14 members of the Cabinet, including Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund - who is on the UN Security Council's terrorism blacklist - as the acting Prime Minister. William Burns and General Bajwa exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, regional security and the current situation in Afghanistan, the Pakistan Army's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a statement. ISI Director-General Faiz Hamid was also present during the meeting, it said. “It was reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to cooperate with its international partners for peace in the region and ensuring a stable and prosperous future for (the) Afghan people,” the statement said. William Burns' Islamabad visit - the first high-level visit by a US official to Pakistan after the completion of US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31- comes days after the ISI chief dashed to Kabul on an unannounced visit last week and met Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. Before coming to Pakistan, US intelligence chief Burns, accompanied by other officials, reportedly paid a quiet visit to India, primarily to discuss ways to mitigate security threats that may emanate from Afghanistan.
