  1. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60506682 Air raid sirens have sounded throughout the night in major cities across Ukraine, as the Russian invasion enters its fifth day. The Russians launched their attack on Thursday from three main directions: north, south and east. Dozens of targets have been struck, as Russian troops have poured into Ukraine. The fight for Kyiv Russian forces arrived near Obolon on the outskirts of Kyiv on Friday, but so far have not advanced into the centre of the capital. The Ukrainian military says Russian troops have repeatedly tried to storm the outskirts of the capital without success. Russian forces now control a narrow path across the Dnieper river into the east of Kyiv, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Russian airborne and special forces troops are reported to be involved in urban clashes in northwestern Kyiv, but mechanised forces such as tanks and armoured vehicles are not yet in the capital. On Sunday, there were reports of clashes with so-called saboteur groups on the city streets - and an oil depot was hit at Vasylkiv south of the city. A residential block in the suburb of Bucha was hit by shelling, and there was heavy fighting in nearby Irpin. There has also been fierce fighting at Hostomel airport, to the west of Kyiv. Russian troops around Ukraine Russia is now in full control of significant parts of Ukraine's territory. After Ukraine's air defences and other military infrastructure came under attack on Thursday, columns of tanks moved into position, backed up by artillery and air power. Troops have spread across parts of the north, east and south, with missile strikes and artillery clearing the way for advancing Russian forces. Some analysts say overall progress by Russian troops has been slower than expected. But after the apparent pause in major operations over the weekend, the Russians could resume the offensive using greater air power and artillery support. Strike from the north From the north, Russian troops crossed the border into Ukraine at the three-way junction between Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, at Senkivka. In recent weeks, a huge deployment of Russian troops gathered close to Novye Yurkovichi and Troebortno, including "the entire 41st army", according to Michael Kofman of the US-based Center for Naval Analyses. The British Ministry of Defence says the bulk of Russia's ground forces remain more than 30km from Kyiv, their advance slowed by Ukrainian forces defending Hostomel airport. Armoured columns, including tanks and multiple launch rocket systems, have moved towards Chernihiv, where they have faced strong Ukrainian opposition. The city faced heavy shelling from Russian troops overnight, but remains in Ukrainian hands. A second, more rapid advance has come down the west side of the Dnieper river via Chernobyl, taking control of a large area to the north and west of Kyiv. LIVE: Follow latest developments Strike from the east On Sunday morning Russian forces breached Kharkiv. There were reports of street fighting and explosions. Images emerged showing Ukrainian troops firing rocket propelled grenades on street corners and Russian troops, on foot, moving behind armoured vehicles. Later in the day, Ukrainian officials said the Russian attack had been repelled.
  2. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-60522505 The "silence" of those who saw black equal rights campaigner Sasha Johnson shot is "crazy", her sister says. Ms Johnson, 28, was shot in the head during a silent disco in the garden of a house in Peckham, south London, in May last year, and remains in hospital. A case against four men charged over the shooting was dropped last week. The activist's mother, Ellet Dalling, urged fresh witnesses to come forward and said: "[The] people that did this to Sasha need to come off the street." Metropolitan Police detectives say they've been met with a "wall of silence" in their appeal for witnesses. Four men in balaclavas shot at guests in the back garden of the house in Consort Road, with one round striking Ms Johnson in the head at "very close range", the court heard. She has permanent and "catastrophic" injuries. A trial had been due to start in March but at a hearing last week, the prosecution said it could not go ahead for reasons that could not be set out fully in open court. The case was based on circumstantial evidence and there was no direct evidence identifying any of the defendants as the attackers, prosecutors added. Ms Johnson's sister, Shakira Williams, told journalists at New Scotland Yard on Monday that despite the case collapsing, the family is determined to get justice. "We were hurt, but we had to pull ourselves together because breaking now is not it... this is a bump in the road," she said. Black rights campaigner shooting case dropped Black Lives Matter activist shot by group of men In a statement addressed to her sister, Ms Williams said the family feel "we all got shot in the head" when Ms Johnson was hurt on 23 May 2021. "I can't put it into words, but the journey has been devastating," she said. She said Ms Johnson's sons, aged seven and 11, have been "so brave and strong".

  8. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-60518578 Global markets soared on Friday as investor concerns eased about the severity of sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Coordinated Western sanctions against Russia have targeted its banks but left its energy sector largely untouched. After sharp falls on Thursday, stock markets in the UK and Europe jumped more than 3%. US exchanges also rose. Oil prices reversed early gains on Friday and fell by more than 2% but are still trading near seven-year highs. Brent crude - the international benchmark for oil prices - dropped below $98 a barrel. The share price gains followed weeks of declines, fuelled in part by concerns about Europe's most severe conflict since World War Two. While the sanctions against Russia include freezing bank assets and cutting off state-owned enterprises, they stopped short of disconnecting Russia from the Swift international banking system or targeting its oil and gas exports, which some analysts said had helped stock markets start to recover. "It's not that the market is saying the war is good news. They were worried about the war and selling off, and now it's happened and paradoxically it's not as bad as the worst case scenario, at least not yet," said Jonas Golterman, senior markets economist at Capital Economics. The UK's FTSE 100 index rose 3.9%- the biggest daily gain since November 2020 when Pfizer announced a vaccine breakthrough - and stock markets in Germany and France closed more than 3.5% higher. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 2.5% higher, while the S&P 500 rose 2.2% and the Nasdaq climbed 1.6%, extending gains from Thursday. Markets in Asia also closed higher. The gains came despite fighting across Ukraine on Friday forced tens of thousands of people from their homes. The US, UK and EU said Friday they would place sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, but China's foreign ministry also reported that Mr Putin might be willing to hold talks with Ukraine. "This is a very sentiment driven market right now, so if there is even a whisper that there might be willingness to talk, the market will rally and rally hard," said Ross Mayfield, a US-based investment strategy analyst at Baird investment bank. "That's not based on fundamentals. That's pure sentiment." After the earlier global sell-off of shares, investors were also "looking for bargains", said Jane Foley, head of currency strategy at Rabobank. Ms Foley told the BBC's Today programme there were many firms in emerging markets which export agricultural products and raw materials such as metals, so "perhaps they're going to be doing well in this crisis, because other countries will be looking to buy their commodities from other markets that aren't Russian".
  9. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-60533083 Russia has blocked Twitter and threatened to do the same with Facebook after a clash over "censorship". Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor accused Facebook of violating "the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens". Facebook said it had refused to stop fact-checking and labelling content from state-owned news organisations. Internet connectivity watchers at NetBlocks say there is a total or near-total restriction on Twitter in Russia. The actions follow Russia's attack on Ukraine with many videos and images of the invasion going viral on social media. NetBlocks says Facebook and Instagram appear to be running normally but Twitter services started being disrupted on Saturday morning. User reports also corroborate this. Circumvention for those in Russia is currently possible using VPN services, which can work around government-imposed restrictions. NetBlocks Director Alp Toker told the BBC: "Russia's restriction of Twitter will significantly limit the free flow of information at a time of crisis when the public most need to stay informed." Twitter has not responded to requests for comment and Roskomnadzor has not announced actions against Twitter. It is unclear what the Facebook restrictions could mean if implemented or if other Meta-owned platforms - like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram - will be hit. The Russian regulator had demanded Facebook lift the restrictions it placed on Thursday on state news agency RIA, state TV channel Zvezda, and pro-Kremlin news sites Lenta.Ru and Gazeta.Ru. It said that Meta had "ignored" these requests. Sir Nick Clegg, vice-president of global affairs at Meta, said Russian authorities "ordered us to stop the independent fact-checking and labelling" the outlets' content. "We refused," he said. But he made clear he wanted Russians to continue to use Meta's platforms. "Ordinary Russians are using our apps to express themselves and organise for action", Sir Nick said, and the company wants "them to continue to make their voices heard". Many state-owned media outlets in Russia have painted a largely positive picture of Russian military advances in Ukraine, calling the invasion a "special military operation" that had been forced on Moscow. On Thursday Meta said it had set up a "special operations centre" to monitor content about the conflict in Ukraine. Russia has its own Facebook equivalents, VK and Odnoklassniki, but Facebook is also po[CENSORED]r in the country - as is Meta-owned Instagram. On Friday, US Senator Mark Warner said Facebook, YouTube and other social media services had "a clear responsibility to ensure that your products are not used to facilitate human rights abuses". Meta has been under pressure to label misinformation - and has been working with outside fact-checkers, including Reuters. Moscow has also increased pressure on domestic media, threatening to block reports that contain what it describes as "false information" regarding its invasion of Ukraine. Twitter also told the BBC that its safety and integrity teams were "disrupting attempts to amplify false and misleading information and to advance the speed and scale of our enforcement".

  14. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-60473233 Oil and gas prices climbed on Tuesday on fears the Ukraine-Russia crisis will disrupt supplies across the world. The price of Brent crude oil, an international benchmark, touched a seven-year high of more than $99 (£73) a barrel after President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine's east. But prices later moderated, despite Western countries responding with economic sanctions and moves to block a key Russian gas pipeline. Shares also stemmed early losses. After falling more than 1.5% in early trade on Tuesday, Wall Street turned up following remarks by US President Joe Biden outlining the US response. The Dow closed down 1.4%, however, while the wider S&P 500 slumped 1% and the Nasdaq fell 1.2%. Earlier, Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed 1.7% lower, and the Shanghai Composite fell nearly 1%, but share indexes in Europe and the UK ended roughly flat, with the FTSE 100 closing up 0.1%. "The West at the moment is treading fairly carefully," said Russ Mould, investment director at the brokers AJ Bell. Pain at the pump Russia is the second-largest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia and the world's top producer of natural gas. Measures forcing the country to supply less crude or natural gas would have "substantial implications" on oil prices and the global economy, said Sue Trinh of Manulife Investment Management. PM announces UK sanctions against Russia Russia recognises Ukraine separatist regions What sanctions could be imposed on Russia? The RAC warned the crisis would push up UK petrol prices further, after they hit a record 149.12p a litre on Sunday. "Russia's decision to invade Ukraine is already causing oil prices to rise and will undoubtedly send fuel prices inexorably higher towards the grim milestone of £1.50 a litre [of unleaded petrol]," said RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams. "This spells bad news for drivers in the UK struggling to afford to put fuel in their cars." But the steps announced by the US, UK and Europe so far fall short of what had been threatened in the event of invasion. The sanctions target financial institutions, elites and other government entities in Russia, in part aiming to restrict the Russian government's ability to raise money on Western financial markets. On Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also took the significant step of blocking the certification of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would have supplied gas directly from Russia to Germany. "If Russian goes further with this invasion, we stand prepared to go further," US President Joe Biden said in remarks at the White House. He also warned that defending Nato territory could come at a cost to the public in the form of higher energy prices. Since the start of February, already-rising oil prices have jumped more than 10% amid the tensions. Maike Currie, an investment director at Fidelity International, said oil could go above $100 a barrel due to a combination of the Ukraine crisis, a cold winter in the US, and a lack of investment in oil and gas supplies around the world. "Russia accounts for one in every 10 barrels of oil consumed globally, so it is a major player when it comes to the price of oil, and of course, it's really going to hurt consumers at the petrol pumps," she said.
  15. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-hereford-worcester-60490081 A severe flood warning remains in force at a town on the River Severn where levels are expected to peak later. Temporary barriers at Beales Corner in Bewdley exceeded their capacity on Tuesday, the Environment Agency said. A severe flood warning, meaning a danger to life, is also in place for the Wharfage in Ironbridge, Shropshire, where levels were below the top of the barriers as the river peaked overnight. There are 14 flood warnings along the length of the Severn in Worcestershire. The severe warning for Bewdley, Worcestershire, is in place at Wribbenhall, where the Environment Agency said major flooding was "expected to continue". People have been rescued, properties evacuated and trains cancelled due to flooding along the river this week. Major incidents were declared in Ironbridge and Bewdley after the flooding was caused by heavy rain during three recent storms - Dudley, Eunice and Franklin. In Worcester, Hylton Road, Tybridge Street, Dolday and The Butts were closed on Wednesday and river levels in the city were expected to peak later. The Wye has peaked in Herefordshire and flood water has been slowly receding. Villagers in Melverley had been out in a boat collecting "vital medication for neighbours and feed for animals", Shropshire Council said. It said residents told them that it was "the worst flooding for at least 20 years". The river has also burst its banks at Bridgnorth, where a flood reception centre is due to open at 09:00 GMT to help those affected. Nick Green, from the Environment Agency, said although some areas had peaked, river levels would not go down for some time. "Any rain that now falls on the Welsh mountains, because the ground's so soggy, there's no ability for it to soak up," he said. "So it just goes straight into the river system and then it has to work its way down through Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and out into the sea."
