  1. More than a million Palestinians are sheltering in the southern Gaza city after being displaced by Israeli attacks. Palestinian children inspect the site of an Israeli strike on a house in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip [Hatem Khaled/Reuters] Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says only the United States could stop Israel from attacking the border city of Rafah in Gaza, adding that the assault, which he expects within days, could force much of the Palestinian po[CENSORED]tion to flee the enclave. “We call on the United States of America to ask Israel to not carry on the Rafah attack. America is the only country able to prevent Israel from committing this crime,” Abbas told a special meeting of the World Economic Forum in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Sunday. Israel, which has threatened for weeks to launch an all-out assault on the city, saying its goal is to destroy Hamas’s remaining battalions there, stepped up air attacks on Rafah last week. Western countries, including Israel’s closest ally the US, have pleaded with it to hold back from attacking the southern city, which abuts the Egyptian border and is sheltering more than a million Palestinians who fled Israel’s seven-month-long assault on much of the rest of Gaza. Abbas said that even a “small strike” on Rafah would force the Palestinian po[CENSORED]tion to flee Gaza. “The biggest catastrophe in the Palestinian people’s history would then happen,” he said. Abbas reiterated that he rejects the displacement of Palestinians into Jordan and Egypt and said he is concerned that once Israel completes its operations in Gaza, it will then attempt to force the Palestinian po[CENSORED]tion out of the occupied West Bank and into Jordan. Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi, reporting from Ramallah, said that Abbas’s remarks were significant as it was the first time a senior leader in the PA made such a statement, but added that the Palestinians expect more from the leader of the PA. “Abbas is simply echoing the things that the Palestinians we have been speaking to said for the last six months,” he said. “The reaction to Abbas’s remarks on the Palestinian streets is likely to mirror a broader political response. The people we have been speaking to say that what they see is a speech from their leader, far too late and far too weak.” Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after Hamas led an attack on southern Israel on October 7 in which Israel said 1,139 people were killed and 253 taken captive. More than 34,400 Palestinians have since been killed, according to the Gaza health ministry, and most of the po[CENSORED]tion is displaced. Hundreds of thousands of people sheltering in Rafah have nowhere to flee in the face of Israel’s offensive that has levelled large swaths of the urban landscape in the rest of the territory. United Nations officials and human rights groups warn that an attack on Rafah will be catastrophic. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/28/palestinian-president-abbas-only-us-can-halt-israels-attack-rafah-gaza

  12. Boyton and Hollesley Marshes, Suffolk: Today these wide open skies give us so much – not least a spoonbill – but there are also great rewards closer to ground A male bearded tit with its ‘harlequin-like markings’. Photograph: Jerome Murray/Alamy As we climb the river wall, our steps laboured by the steep bank, the harsh wind suddenly hits us so fast it takes our breath away. The Butley river, with its saltmarsh and mud banks, sweeps ahead on my left. To my right, Boyton Marshes stretches into a bright white horizon. These are the famous Suffolk skies: wide and open. Continuing on the Suffolk coast path, curlew, Cetti’s warblers and skylarks call. As I look ahead, redshanks busily scour the mud on the river edge. Oystercatchers fly past us, following the river, and a marsh harrier glides above one of the islands in the distance. We sit just off the path, out of the wind, to drink hot tea from a flask. Signs of spring are everywhere: a dozen black-tailed godwits, each poised on one leg, heads tucked under a wing, their rusty red chests aflame with summer plumage. And flitting above the reeds, three swallows – the first I have seen this year. ‘These are the famous Suffolk skies: wide and open.’ Photograph: Handout As we resume our walk, a spoonbill flies overhead. These spectacular, once scarce birds can now be often spotted on the coasts of East Anglia during the summer months, and some breed elsewhere in the UK. It is a privilege to have them on my doorstep, and it’s amusing how a bird can look slightly comical yet graceful at the same time. For me this is still trumped, however, by the two small birds that fly across our path in a flash of black, white, gold and amber. They disappear behind dense reeds and bramble. We wait, peeping through our scope, holding our breath – they are the unmistakable bearded tits. Harlequin-like markings on the male, soft buff-coloured faces on the female. Their sleek, streamlined bodies balance between the stems and they move quickly, making their distinctive soft “pinging” call as they work their way along the reeds, appearing for only seconds at a time before diving back into the foliage. Could they be looking to nest? Do they already have a nest? I hope so. So as to not disturb them, we creep away softly. Later that day, I’m delighted to read that these charismatic birds are not actually a tit; they belong to their own family, the Panuridae. I reflect on this magical spot, and the splendour of knowing that every time I return, I will see something new. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/20/country-diary-holding-our-breath-as-we-watch-the-bearded-tits
  13. The Iran-backed group said it acted in retaliation for an earlier Israeli attack in Lebanon killed one of its members [Mahmoud Zayyat/AFP] The Lebanese group Hezbollah says it has launched drone attacks on Israeli bases north of the city of Acre in retaliation for the killing of one of its fighters, marking the deepest attack into Israeli territory since the Gaza war began. Hezbollah launched “a combined air attack using decoy and explosive drones that targeted” two Israeli bases halfway between Acre and Nahariyya, it said in a statement on Tuesday. The Iran-backed group said it acted in retaliation for an earlier Israeli attack killing one of its fighters. It published what appeared to be a satellite photo, with the location of the attack symbolised by a flash with a red circle around it. The Israeli military said it had no knowledge of any of its facilities being hit by Hezbollah, but had said earlier that it intercepted two “aerial targets” off Israel’s northern coast. Later on Tuesday, Lebanon’s official news agency NNA said at least two people were killed and six others injured after an Israeli air raid hit a residential area in the southern Lebanese town of Hanin. “Israeli warplanes struck a two-storey house with two air-to-surface missiles, completely destroying the building which was inhabited by a family that had not left the town since Israeli attacks began,” NNA said. A member of the Lebanese intelligence service stands at the site of an Israeli attack on a vehicle in the Adloun plain area [Mahmoud Zayyat/AFP] Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military said its air raids killed two Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah later confirmed the death of one of its fighters, Hussein Azkoul, but provided no further details. A separate Israeli attack overnight killed Muhammad Attiya, a fighter in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Forces, the military said. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah on the claim. Since Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack triggered Israel’s war on Gaza, there have been near-daily cross-border exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli army. Israeli attacks have killed about 270 Hezbollah fighters, as well as about 50 civilians. Hezbollah’s rocket and drone fire has killed about a dozen Israeli soldiers and half as many civilians. The shelling has displaced tens of thousands on each side. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/23/hezbollah-launches-deepest-attack-inside-israel-since-gaza-war-began
