  3. Morgan has begun testing a substantially overhauled second-generation version of its lightweight 3 Wheeler roadster, as it prepares to wind down production of the current car this year. Autocar has obtained an exclusive image of a prototype being put through its paces, giving us a first look at how the Malvern manufacturer will update the diminutive 3 Wheeler, which remains similar in its concept and design to the Morgan Super Sports launched in 1933. Most obviously, one of the current car's defining features, its front-mounted V-twin engine, has been removed. Morgan previously confirmed that the outgoing car's 1998cc motorcycle-derived 82bhp aircooled engine - supplied by American manufacturer S&S - would become non-compliant with emissions regulations in 2021, but has not yet detailed its replacement. Irrespective of output, Autocar understands the engine will continue to drive the rear wheel exclusively. It is now two and a half years since Morgan shelved plans for a pure-electric version of the 3 Wheeler, citing problems with its powertrain supplier and vowing to bolster its EV development capabilities by bringing "additional specialist resource in-house". It remains unclear whether this second-generation car could spawn a zero-emission variant. With no engine elements on show, it appears the next-gen 3 Wheeler's powerplant will be housed, more conventionally, in the bodyshell itself. That means it's likely to be larger than the current two-cylinder unit and, as is the case with the other models in Morgan's range, will likely be sourced from a third-party manufacturer. BMW currently supplies engines for Morgan's four-wheeled sports cars, but the smallest is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder taken from the Z4 sports car, and would almost certainly be too large for the 3 Wheeler's shell. Beyond that, we can see clues as to a subtle redesign for the brand's smallest model. With the engine relocated, it looks as if Morgan will introduce a more streamlined front end, although the front wheels will remain exposed while the rear wheel is enclosed within the tail of the car. However, the roll cage pictured here is for testing purposes and won't make production. More significant are the apparent revisions to the 3 Wheeler's chassis. With the front track visibly widened, we get a good look at what seems to be a much more advanced suspension set-up, while the vented brake discs at the front have been substantially upsized, all of which points to a more overt handling focus and potentially a power increase for the 3 Wheeler. The new 3 Wheeler is expected to be shown in full towards the end of this year, ahead of an international market launch in 2022.
  4. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has backed the Czech Republic in its requirement for mandatory pre-school vaccinations. The case was brought by families who were fined or whose children were refused entry to pre-schools because they had not been vaccinated. In a landmark ruling, the court found that while the Czech policy interfered with the right to a private life, there was a need to protect public health. All the cases pre-date the pandemic. However, the issue of routine childhood vaccinations has come under increasing scrutiny due to the spread of Covid-19. Child vaccinations fall sharply amid pandemic Measles resurgence fear amid coronavirus This is the first ruling from the ECHR on compulsory vaccination against childhood diseases. The judges backed the Czech legislation by 16 to 1. "The... measures could be regarded as being 'necessary in a democratic society'" the court said, adding: "The objective has to be that every child is protected against serious diseases, through vaccination or by virtue of herd immunity." Under the Czech rules, parents are legally obliged to vaccinate their children against a number of childhood diseases unless this is not possible for health reasons. However, the jabs cannot be forcibly given and unvaccinated children cannot be excluded on this basis once they reach primary school age. In one of the five cases involving pre-school exclusions, a family refused to allow their daughter to received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jab. The child joined the school in 2006 but her place was withdrawn two years later when the family doctor informed the headteacher that the child had not received the vaccination. A Czech court later backed the school's decision on the grounds that allowing the child to continue to go to the pre-school could endanger others. Other parents had been refused pre-school places, while one father was fined for failing to fully vaccinate his children. The Czech Republic is not the only EU country with mandatory childhood vaccinations. 'No vaccine, no school' in Italy Should vaccinations be compulsory in England?' Last year, a law came into effect in Germany requiring all parents to vaccinate their children against measles or face a fine of up to €2,500 ($3,000; £2,160). France and Italy have also changed their vaccine rules following a measles outbreak in recent years, while similar suggestions were made in England amid falling uptake of the MMR jab in England in 2018-19.

  8. Alienware is releasing its first laptop with an AMD CPU since 2007. Its parent company, Dell, today announced the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5, alongside a lower-end Dell G15 Ryzen Edition and a Dell G15 refresh with Intel chips. The Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 will use AMD's Ryzen 5000 H-series chips paired with Nvidia GeForce RTX 30-series GPUs. Like the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE, it will go up to a Ryzen 9 5900HX, which might give it enough power for consideration on our list of the best gaming laptops (we'll have to review it first, of course). The last Alienware laptop to pair with an AMD CPU and an Nvidia GPU was the Aurora mALX, last seen in 2007. That line went up to 19 inches and featured an AMD Turion 64 ML-44 and two Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX cards in SLI. The new m15 Ryzen Edition R5 will also be the first 15-inch Alienware laptop going to DDR4 memory at 3,200 MHz, and that memory will be user-replaceable. The m15 Ryzen Edition will come only in the black "dark side of the moon paint job," as Dell put it, and feature a new two-toned finish, marking the first real change to Alienware's "Legend" design language. Inside, the laptop uses what Alienware refers to as "Silky-Smooth High-Endurance" paint, which it claims reduces stains and feels like a more premium product. Alienware’s AMD machine will also benefit from the option of the Cherry MX keyboard it introduced recently on the m15 R4. Additionally, the m15 Ryzen Editionfeatures Alienware's proprietary cooling, dubbed "Cryo-Tech." There are three display options on the new Alienware: A 1080p (1920 x 1080), 360 Hz display for eSports aficionados, a 1440p (2560 x 1440) 240 Hz panel and a 1080p screen at 165 Hz. The Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 will start at $2,299.99 and go on sale first in China on April 7, in the U.S. on April 20 and with a global release on May 4. New Dell G15 Gaming Laptops The two new Dell G15 models use the redesigned chassis that the company introduced in China in March, with more aggressive angles and some new colors. The Dell G15 Ryzen Edition model will go up to an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, while the Intel version will go up to a 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10870H (the Ryzen version uses the faster RAM, while the Intel version does not). Both G15s will offer 15.6-inch displays with 1920 x 1080 resolution at either 120 Hz or 165 Hz.

  12. What is it? Imagine how different a company Audi must feel today than it did 10 years ago. Once the envy of the industry, the firm’s formerly phenomenal growth curve now looks to have permanently levelled off. Its closest competitors have overtaken it. The ex-boss and a couple of his lieutenants have ended up in court. Perhaps even more worryingly still if you’re an Audi employee, though, must be the prospect of the product strategy that has fuelled the company’s rise now suddenly seeming to have run out of road. It was with those odd-numbered, designer Sportback saloons that the firm really started putting on the sales volume back in the noughties. Back then, too, came the Q-prefixed SUVs, whose appearance on the roads none of us can have failed to notice, and none of which seemed to miss its target market. With another brand-new, big-selling, mid-sized model along every year, how easy it must have been for besuited salesmen in shiny showrooms, over a couple of phone calls and meetings, to manoeuvre a regular client from A4 to A5, from A5 Sportback to A4 Avant, and then into a Q5; each time squeezing just a little more monthly bunce out of a customer who likes the brand, always wants the latest thing, and has the disposable income to change their car like some of us buy shoes. That, folks, is how you grow a premium car brand in the modern world: with fresh product along every five minutes. And now? Well, that product expansion plan has played itself out to the point that new arrivals are Sportback versions of Q-car SUVs (and that gigantic product strategy Venn diagram on the office wall in Ingolstadt can’t have much vacant space left on it). Eighteen months ago, along came the first – the Q3 Sportback – and now we’ve got a bigger Q5 take on the concept. What's it like? This is a sleeker, better-looking Q5; well, that’s the idea. Competition for the likes of the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupé. Model for model, a Sportback will cost you about £2500 more than a Q5 SUV, and although it offers marginally less cargo and passenger space than the regular Q5, it’s hoped that most customers won’t notice what they’re giving up. It’s hoped they will notice the styling, which gives the Q5 Sportback the usual plunging roofline, slightly bigger grille, bolder ‘implied air intakes’ (eurgh), and better-defined surfacing features than the regular SUV. From June this year, when UK deliveries start, you’ll be able to get one with a choice of bottom-end, mild-hybrid four-cylinder petrol or diesel engines; in V6 TDI-powered SQ5 performance guise; or with either of a pair of petrol-electric TFSI e plug-in hybrid powertrains. All versions bar one get a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard (the SQ5 is an eight-speed torque-converter auto). All versions have quattro four-wheel drive, with the more economy-minded ones swapping Audi’s Torsen centre diff for an intelligent electronic clutch-based coupling. Lower-end trims have fixed-height coil suspension, and pricier upper-end ones get adaptive air springs. Mechanically, that’s all the same choice as you’ll find in a regular Q5, though; so convincing yourself to trade in your existing SUV and sign up for a Sportback as soon as possible might not be that easy if you're a strictly rational thinker. I’d need some convincing. Then again, I’m not a particular fan of Audi’s current approach to design - and if you are, and you like what you see here, who could argue?
  13. Two doormen have been fired after they allegedly failed to intervene as an Asian-American woman was being attacked in New York. The 65-year-old woman was admitted to hospital after she was punched and kicked repeatedly last month. CCTV video from the attack appeared to show staff at the Manhattan building watching without intervening. The Brodsky Organization, owners of the building, said the men assisted the woman after the attacker left. The incident comes amid a rise in anti-Asian crimes in the wake of the pandemic, including a deadly attack in Atlanta in which three women of Asian descent were among the eight dead. The suspect in the New York assault, Brandon Elliot, has been charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of attempted assault as a hate crime. Footage shared by police appears to show a man approaching a woman in the street and kicking her to the ground. While she is lying on the floor outside a building entrance, he kicks her again in the stomach and the face. Staff at the building appear to watch the attack and a doorman is seen closing the door. The doormen were suspended after the attack, pending an investigation. A statement from the building's owners to CNN said that after the suspect fled the scene, the doormen assisted the woman and flagged down a police vehicle. However, it added that "required emergency and safety protocols were not followed". "We are extremely distraught and shocked by this incident, and our hearts go out to the victim," they added. The union that represents the staff members told the New York Times in a statement that the employees did assist the woman. In a longer video obtained by the New York Times, a delivery person appeared to be the sole witness when the attack happened and the doormen come out later, move towards the door and then close it. A minute later they are seen walking outside. Kyle Bragg, president of the 32BJ SEIU union, said that the employees had started a process to challenge their dismissal. From insults to murder - anti-Asian hate on rise Chinatowns fighting racism and pandemic to survive New York Mayor Bill de Blasio described the assault as "disgusting and outrageous", shortly after it took place. More than 3,795 incidents were reported to the organization Stop Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Hate from 19 March last year to 28 February this year, according to a report. This probably accounts for just a fraction of attacks, the organisation explained. Nationwide statistics recording hate crimes in 2020 have not yet been released, but many Asian-American people say they have observed a rise in insults and attacks. Last month, President Joe Biden announced plans to tackle the rise in anti-Asian violence. He said the government would publish interactive data on hate crimes as well as train national and local police in responding to hate crimes.

  15. MG has revealed the bold Cyberster concept, an electric two-door roadster intended as a "vision of the future", ahead of its public debut at the Shanghai motor show. The new car is described as a sports concept and is intended to recall the Chinese-owned brand's roots as a British sports car maker, with a number of design features that echo the classic MG B Roadster. MG has yet to release full technical details of the Cyberster but says that it's based on a bespoke EV architecture and will offer a range of 497 miles and a 0-62mph time of less than 3.0sec. It will also feature 5G connectivity. The Cyberster has round ‘Magic Eye’ LED headlights, inspired by those of classic MG models, that ‘open’ when switched on. There are also bold ‘laser belt’ LED strips down the sides of the car, while the flattened rear end features an LED light design that contains elements of the Union Jack flag. The car was designed at MG and parent firm SAIC’s Advanced Design Centre in the UK. Carl Gotham, the head of the design centre, said the Cybester is “a bold statement that looks strongly into MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting edge technology and advanced design”. Further details of the Cyberster will be given when the car is displayed at the Shanghai motor show on 21 April.
  16. The World Health Organization (WHO) has criticised the rollout of coronavirus vaccines in Europe as being "unacceptably slow". It also says the situation in the region is more worrying than it has been for several months. Vaccination campaigns in much of Europe have been hit by delays and the number of infections is rising. France is the latest country to announce new lockdown measures, lasting four weeks. Why is the EU having vaccine problems? How is Europe dealing with the third wave? What did the WHO say? "Vaccines present our best way out of this pandemic... However, the rollout of these vaccines is unacceptably slow" and is prolonging the pandemic in the wider Europe region, WHO director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement. "We must speed up the process by ramping up manufacturing, reducing barriers to administering vaccines, and using every single vial we have in stock, now," he added. In the meantime, as long as vaccine coverage remained low, he said EU countries would have to impose lockdowns and other measures to compensate for the delays. Mr Kluge also warned that the vaccine rollout, despite its slow speed, risked "providing a false sense of security to authorities and the public alike". What is Europe's Covid situation? Last week saw increasing transmission of Covid-19 in the majority of countries in the WHO European region - which includes more than 50 countries and extends from Greenland to the far east of Russia. There were 1.6 million new cases and close to 24,000 deaths, the WHO said. Cases were rising in all but one age group, the organisation said. Only 10% of the nearly 900 million people in the region have had a single dose of coronavirus vaccine.

  21. What is it? Well, that’s interesting: roughly a year after introducing it, Land Rover has dropped the four-cylinder diesel engine from the Defender. Which means that if you want a Defender that drinks its fuel from the black pump, you now have just one engine to choose from: the recently introduced Ingenium 3.0-litre straight six. Lovely stuff. It’s available in three guises: D200, D250 and D300, with power outputs ranging from 197bhp to 296bhp. Here, we’re sampling the mid-level D250, which kicks out a handsome 245bhp and 420lb ft of torque, enabling our three-door Defender 90 test car to hit 62mph from a standstill in a respectable 8.0sec. Jaguar Land Rover was extremely late to the party in launching this particular powerplant, but the firm is due credit regardless, because it has made a pretty sweet engine. Under the bonnet of the Defender, it doesn’t sound quite as smooth or refined under lighter throttle loads than plenty of other straight-six oil-burners you could care to name, but it isn’t far off at all. What's it like? Performance is very decent, too, although while the Defender 90 feels fast enough to make its claimed 8.0sec sprint time appear legitimate, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that its acceleration seems entirely effortless. Bury the throttle and you really get a sense of how much work the motor is having to do to shift the Defender’s 2.2-tonne mass and bluff, boxy body with a bit of urgency. It’s like you’re accelerating on really soft, viscous asphalt. It’s a little strange but impressive nonetheless. Unsurprisingly, the engine’s torque arrives in one big, fat dollop, and as the revs spiral towards the redline, it quickly edges into breathlessness. It does sound good up there, mind, like a low-key, malevolent growl. However, the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox isn’t the most quick-witted in the world. Were this a conventional SUV, you would probably want it to be a bit quicker on the uptake, but the Defender isn’t really a conventional SUV, is it? We’ve extensively covered just how capable the long-wheelbase 110 version of this 4x4 is in the wilds, and while this one stayed firmly on the road during our brief test drive, the same story no doubt applies. In fact, the Defender 90 would be even better, thanks to the superior breakover angle afforded by its shorter wheelbase.
  22. North Korea has fired two ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, says the US and Japan - the first such test since Joe Biden became US president. Pyongyang is banned from testing ballistic missiles, considered threatening weapons, under UN Security Council resolutions. Both Japan and South Korea have condemned the test. It comes just days after North Korea reportedly fired two non-ballistic missiles into the Yellow Sea. Japan said no debris had fallen within its territorial waters. The US Pacific Command, which oversees military forces in the Asia-Pacific region, said on Thursday that the test highlighted "the threat that North Korea's illicit weapons programme poses to its neighbours and the international community". North Korea crisis in 300 words North Korea's missile and nuclear programme North Korea 'not responding' to US contact efforts Mr Biden is yet to officially comment. On Tuesday, he played down a non-ballistic missile launch which took place over the weekend, saying the US did not consider it a provocation. Those short-range missiles were thought to be either artillery or cruise missiles, which are not banned under the UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea. Thursday's test also comes days after the US received its first North Korean in custody after Mun Chol Myung was extradited from Malaysia. Mr Mun is a businessman accused of laundering money through the US financial system to provide luxury items to North Korea. The incident angered North Korea so much it cut off diplomatic ties with Malaysia. This is a bigger deal for the US and its allies. The test at the weekend of either artillery or cruise missiles can be shrugged off. But this ballistic missile test is a clear violation of United Nations Security sanctions. Having said that, Mr Biden's predecessor Donald Trump did wave off any questions regarding similar weapons tests in 2019. The deal between Mr Trump and Kim Jong-un reached in Singapore in 2018 was that Pyongyang would not test long-range ballistic missiles or nuclear weapons. At that time, the White House did not concern itself with smaller tests. But Mr Biden's team is just back from Japan and South Korea, and promised that "America was back" and supporting its allies. Perhaps then, the administration will have to say something about a weapons test which threatens its friends in North East Asia. Washington will also be aware that Pyongyang has bigger weapons in its arsenal which it has not tested since late 2017. North Korea has spent more than a year in isolation. It even cut off most trade with its closest ally China amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, and its economy is thought to be in a dire state. Now that the weapons tests appear to be making a return, many are wondering just how far is Kim Jong-un willing to go to get the attention of the White House. 1px transparent line Japanese officials said North Korea fired the two missiles after 07:00 local time on Thursday (20:00 GMT Wednesday). They flew 420km and 430km respectively before landing in waters outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone. There was no damage inflicted to ships or aeroplanes. North Korea last fired ballistic missiles a year ago amid stalled relations between then-US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
