  2. Volkswagen has confirmed that it will launch the new ID 4 GTX, the first in a series of performance-focused electric vehicles, on 28 April. The range-topping version of the recently launched electric SUV is set to use a 302bhp all-wheel-drive powertrain, making it the first ID model to go on sale offering four-wheel drive. The system will automatically send power to the front axle when required, although Volkswagen says it will offer a performance AWD ‘Traction’ drive mode. As first revealed by Autocar in 2019, the GTX badge will be used for future ID performance models, positioning them alongside the existing GTI, GTD and GTE model lines. Klaus Zellmer, Volkswagen’s marketing boss, said: “The letters GT have long stood for driving pleasure. Now the X is building the bridge to the mobility of the future.” He added: “Sustainability and sportiness are not mutually exclusive but complement each other intelligently.” As with GTI models, the GTX machines will feature bespoke styling elements to set them apart from regular ID cars, which, Volkswagen says, will include “their own light signature”. It is not yet known if GTX models will feature a variant of the famous tartan trim offered with GTI models, and which has been expanded to GTD and GTE variants. Autocar understands that the ID 4 GTX will feature a lower ride height than the regular ID 4, with various other chassis changes made in order to boost the handling and performance. The ID 4 GTX is set to be followed later this year by the ID 5, a coupé-crossover version of the ID 4. It is likely that model will also gain a GTX version eventually. With Volkswagen focused on using all-wheel-drive dual-motor powertrains to meet the performance expectations of the GTX badge, it is unlikely that a hot version of the smaller ID 3 will be offered.
  3. Four men have been detained by French police investigating the carefully planned kidnapping of an eight-year-old girl that prosecutors believe was ordered by her mother. Mia was taken from her grandmother's home in the Vosges area of eastern France on Tuesday. Her abduction sparked a nationwide alert but prosecutors believe she may have been taken abroad by her mother. The suspects allege they were asked to carry out the plot over the internet. "Three of the them showed up at Mia's grandmother's home to abduct the girl and hand her over to her mother 20 minutes later," said local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz. While one suspect waited in the car, two approached the grandmother pretending to be child protection officers, he said. A search of the home of one of the suspects in Paris revealed a prepared script to be read to the grandmother, as well as a Citroën C15 minivan said to have been identified by witnesses. An abduction alert, modelled on the US amber alert system for abducted children, was triggered and lifted hours later. 'Anti-terror investigation' No violence was used in the abduction, but a separate search at the home of another suspect found materials that could be used to make explosives, authorities said. News channel BFMTV reported the four were also being investigated by the anti-terror prosecutor for alleged terrorist conspiracy. They are reported to have discussed possible attacks on Covid vaccination centres. There has so far been no trace of either Mia or her mother, Lola Montemaggi, who is 28. The Vosges is not far from the borders of Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, so authorities have been contacted abroad. None of the four, aged 23 to 60, have criminal records, however three are described as known survivalists - a type of anti-state individual living on the fringe and often linked to the far right. The prosecutor said one of those involved in the abduction considered himself a "dissident" in the style of fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Another believed he had saved the child's life, although he admitted he might have been mani[CENSORED]ted by the girl's mother. Custody of Mia was given to her maternal grandmother last January after her mother reportedly told a family judge she wanted to "live on the margins of society". Prosecutors said she had previously expressed the desire to sell up and live in a motor home "under the radar".

  6. What is it? When we're talking about Isuzu in Autocar, we're talking about the D-Max. It's the only passenger vehicle the brand sells in the UK, and has been since the Trooper SUV bowed out in 2002. Isuzu is predominantly a manufacturer of commercial and public service vehicles, which is a big part of why the D-Max doesn't enjoy quite the same foothold on the consumer market as more recognisably 'household name' models. In fact, Isuzu sold just 3154 units in the UK last year, compared with around 6000 Toyota Hiluxes and 13,000 Ford Rangers. But, all being well, that could be about to change. The D-Max has now entered its third generation and is what you might call a "bit of a different beast". We're driving it here following its recent arrival in UK dealerships, but if you're from south-east Asia, you might already be familiar with this latest generation, which started rolling off the production line in late 2019 and is already outselling the all-conquering Hilux in Thailand - one of the world’s biggest pick-up markets. The previous generation was as rough and ready as you would expect of a commercially focused, affordable 4x4 load-hauler, and while our testers found fault with the plasticky interior, slow infotainment system and agricultural powertrain, it won back some stars (admittedly not many of them) for its 3500kg towing capacity and good-value kit list, among other select attributes. But now there’s this all-new D-Max, and right away, it’s plain to see that Isuzu is keen for us to consider it in an entirely different light from its predecessor. “Smarter, stronger, safer” are the buzzwords of the day, and just a cursory glance at the new truck’s chrome-clad front end and recognisably SUV-inspired dashboard layout reveals just how far this humble workhorse has come. Isuzu UK managing director William Brown recognises that the market withdrawals - both recent and imminent - of rivals such as the Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and first-generation Volkswagen Amarok have the potential to work in the D-Max’s favour. The brand hopes to achieve 10,000 sales per year by 2025 and has recently appointed 11 new dealerships to cope with the expected hike in demand, eight of which, sensibly, are ex-Mistubishi franchises. We had a go in the top-line V-Cross, which in £32,759 (pre-VAT) double-cab, automatic guise is expected to be the best-seller. Gunmetal-grey exterior trim elements, jazzy 18in alloy wheels, LED light clusters and optional Pearl White paint are the obvious visual differentiators from the rough-and-ready entry models, while added luxuries include a bigger touchscreen, leather-style seats, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera and keyless entry. A locking rear differential is standard fitment from DL20 trim upwards and all variants come with an integrated rear step, a full suite of driver aids, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio and a USB port. What's it like? However close the D-Max comes to aping some of the conventional characteristics associated with passenger-carrying SUVs, you have to remember that Isuzu doesn’t make such cars, and neither is this wholly intended to tempt the average business buyer from their BMW X5 or Land Rover Discovery. It is, first and foremost, a tool - one that we are jokingly reminded “loves work loads” (geddit?) - so going in with lofty expectations of class and panache is a sure-fire way to come away disappointed. Instead, marvel at the standard-fitment 4.2in digital display, the impressively up-to-date and advanced central touchscreen (7.0in on DL40 and 9.0in on V-Cross), and eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat. Emblematic of Isuzu’s pursuit of the ‘lifestyle’ market, these are just some of the features that mark this latest-generation D-Max out from its faintly crude forebear. There are power windows all round, wireless smartphone mirroring is equipped across the range and so is cruise control of the adaptive variety. Regardless of expectation, there’s little lacking in the kit department, at least on this top-spec example. The fleet-focused, black-bumpered entry models obviously take a more analogue approach. Of note, too, is that this is the only vehicle in its segment with a coveted five-star Euro NCAP rating, courtesy largely of its larger airbags, reinforced chassis and updated suite of advanced driver aids. Drive it at a steady 25mph towards an immovable object and it will bring you to a controlled, straight stop - surely an appreciable ability for anyone who spends a lot of time around heavy farm and building equipment, or negotiating tight country lanes. First impressions count, and the D-Max’s chances of impressing are enhanced if you give it the chance to demonstrate its off-road ability before all else. The average pick-up owner might not have much call to drive along a 45deg embankment or - oh, I don’t know - ford a sizeable estuary, but it’s certainly reassuring to know it can when needed. The D-Max really is unfathomably capable when it comes to traversing the most hostile of terrain. Air intakes have been raised to increase the wading depth to 800mm, underbody protection has been substantially improved and electronic aids such as hill descent control and shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive are fitted as standard.
  7. Driving to Taliban-controlled territory doesn't take long. Around 30 minutes from the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, passing large craters left by roadside bombs, we meet our host: Haji Hekmat, the Taliban's shadow mayor in Balkh district. Perfumed and in a black turban, he's a veteran member of the group, having first joined the militants in the 1990s when they ruled over the majority of the country. The Taliban have arranged a display of force for us. Lined up on either side of the street are heavily armed men, one carrying a rocket propelled grenade launcher, another an M4 assault rifle captured from US forces. Balkh was once one of the more stable parts of the country; now it's become one of the most violent. Baryalai, a local military commander with a ferocious reputation, points down the road, "the government forces are just there by the main market, but they can't leave their bases. This territory belongs to the mujahideen". It's a similar picture across much of Afghanistan: the government controls the cities and bigger towns, but the Taliban are encircling them, with a presence in large parts of the countryside. The militants assert their authority through sporadic checkpoints along key roads. As Taliban members stop and question passing cars, Aamir Sahib Ajmal, the local head of the Taliban's intelligence service, tells us they're searching for people linked to the government. "We will arrest them, and take them prisoner," he says. "Then we hand them over to our courts and they decide what will happen next." The Taliban believe victory is theirs. Sitting over a cup of green tea, Haji Hekmat proclaims, "we have won the war and America has lost". The decision by US President Joe Biden to delay the withdrawal of remaining US forces to September, meaning they will remain in the country past the 1 May deadline agreed last year, has sparked a sharp reaction from the Taliban's political leadership. Nonetheless, momentum seems to be with the militants. "We are ready for anything," says Haji Hekmat. "We are totally prepared for peace, and we are fully prepared for jihad." Sitting next to him, a military commander adds: "Jihad is an act of worship. Worship is something that, however much of it you do, you don't get tired." For the past year, there has been an apparent contradiction in the Taliban's "jihad". They stopped attacks on international forces following the signing of an agreement with the US, but continued to fight with the Afghan government. Haji Hekmat, though, insists there is no contradiction. "We want an Islamic government ruled by the Sharia. We will continue our jihad until they accept our demands." On whether or not the Taliban would be willing to share power with other Afghan political factions, Haji Hekmat defers to the group's political leadership in Qatar. "Whatever they decide we will accept," he repeatedly says. Afghans face pivotal moment as US 'closes the book' A year of violence on the road to peace Fears rise as US ends its longest war The Taliban don't see themselves as a mere rebel group, but as a government-in-waiting. They refer to themselves as the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan," the name they used when in power from 1996 until being overthrown in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Now, they have a sophisticated "shadow" structure, with officials in charge of overseeing everyday services in the areas they control. Haji Hekmat, the Taliban mayor, takes us on a tour. We're shown a primary school, filled with young boys and girls scribbling in UN-donated textbooks. While in power in the 1990s, the Taliban banned female education, though they often deny that. Even now, there are reports that in other areas older girls are not allowed to attend classes. But here at least the Taliban say they're actively encouraging it. "As long as they wear hijab, it's important for them to study," says Mawlawi Salahuddin, in charge of the Taliban's local education commission. In secondary schools, he says, only female teachers are allowed, and the veil is mandatory. "If they follow the Sharia, there is no problem."

  11. The hot Skoda Kodiaq vRS will return with a new lighter and more powerful turbocharged petrol engine as part of as part of a wider mid-life facelift for the large SUV. The performance version of the Czech firm’s seven-seater previously used a 236bhp twin-turbo diesel engine, but it was taken off sale last year due to tightening emissions regulations. The Kodiaq vRS will now use the VW Group’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which offers a higher output of 241bhp and is more than 60kg lighter than the diesel previously used. It retains all-wheel-drive and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Skoda has yet to give full performance details for the new model, but taking the same-engined version of the similarly sized Seat Tarraco as an indicator, we would expect a 0-62mph time of just over 6.0secs and a top speed of 140mph. As before, the Kodiaq vRS features a number of bespoke styling details to set it apart from standard versions of the SUV, including a revamped gloss black grille, black window frames and roof rails and a new bespoke front bumper. It also sits on revised 20in alloy wheels finished in metallic black. The interior features red vRS stitching on the upholstery, and is offered with Skoda’s Virtual Cockpit as standard. That 10.25in digital info display features an extra Sport layout option, which gives prominence to the speedometer and rev counter. The revisions to the vRS are part of a wider refresh for the Kodiaq, which launched in 2016 and has sold more than 600,000 units worldwide. The revised Kodiaq vRS will go on sale in July. Pricing details have yet to be set, but a small increase over the previous version, which started from £42,870, is expected.
  12. US President Joe Biden is set to announce that American troops will leave Afghanistan by 11 September, officials have told US media. The US would miss a May deadline for a pull-out agreed with the Taliban by the Trump administration last year. The new deadline would coincide with the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in the US in 2001. Mr Biden had previously said the 1 May deadline would be tough to meet. US and Nato officials have said the Taliban, a hardline Islamist movement, have so far failed to live up to commitments to reduce violence. The Taliban have been warned that if they attack US troops during the pull-out phase, they "will be met with a forceful response", said a senior administration official who was briefing reporters. Mr Biden had decided a hasty withdrawal that would put US forces at risk was not a viable option, the official added. At the same time, a review of US choices determined that now was the time to close the book on the 20-year conflict in Afghanistan to focus on more acute threats. Mr Biden is due to make the announcement himself on Wednesday. A 'moonshot' plan for peace in Afghanistan A year of violence on the road to peace The move comes hours after it was confirmed that the Taliban and the Afghan government would take part in a US-led peace conference in Turkey, starting later this month. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin are expected to brief Nato allies on the decision in the Belgian capital, Brussels, on Wednesday. The United States has spent trillions of dollars and lost more than 2,000 service members since 2001 in what has been its longest war. The deal signed in February last year said the US and its Nato allies would withdraw all troops in 14 months if the Taliban upheld its promises, including not allowing al-Qaeda or other militants to operate in areas it controlled and proceeding with national peace talks. As a condition of starting negotiations with the Afghan government, the Taliban also demanded the release of thousands of their men in a prisoner swap. Direct talks then began in Doha in September 2020, but a breakthrough has still not been reached. Who are the Taliban? The Afghan war: The short and long story Although the group stopped attacks on international forces as part of the historic agreement, it has continued to fight the Afghan government. Last month, the Taliban threatened to resume hostilities against foreign troops still in the country on 1 May. There are fears that if foreign military forces withdraw before a lasting agreement is reached, the Taliban might seize power. The US has some 2,500 troops in the country as part of a 9,600-strong Nato mission.

  15. Bentley will return to the formidable Pikes Peak International Hillclimb for the third and final time in 2021 in pursuit of a "triple crown" of course records. Having set a record time for the production SUV at the Colorado course with its Bentayga in 2018 and the production car record the following year with the Continental GT, Bentley will now seek to achieve the Time Attack 1 record for modified, production-based vehicles. The racer of choice is a substantially upgraded version of the GT3-specification Continental GT, which will be piloted once again by drifting champion Rhys Millen, who is aiming to cover the 12.42-mile, 156-corner course in less than nine minutes and 36 seconds - 42 seconds quicker than his 2019 time. The Continental GT3 Pikes Peak, run in partnership with customer race team Fastr, is described as "the most extreme road-car-based Bentley in history," with revisions over the customer racer extending to a dramatic aerodynamics package and comprehensive powertrain modifications. Most obviously, the car features the "biggest rear wing ever fitted to a Bentley," along with a chunky rear diffuser and a dual-plane front splitter. The rear windows have been swapped for air scoops - which will aid cooling in the thin air at the top of the mountain - while other Pikes Peak-specific additions include a full roll cage and, crucially, a stopwatch. Just as significant as the visual enhancements are the powertrain upgrades, which allow the racer to be run on biofuel-based petrol, in line with Bentley's wider goal to promote and prove synthetic fuel technology. The Continental uses a variation of the road car's twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8, with a "significant" power hike courtesy of the modifications - which are yet to be fully detailed - and the fuel used. An output of upwards of 600bhp is therefore to be expected, and Bentley promises that it will "sound as dramatic as it looks," thanks to a pair of short side-exit exhaust pipes. It will be the first Bentley race car to use synthetic fuel, and while the firm has yet to decide on a precise chemical formula, it promises greenhouse gas reductions of up to 85% compared with conventional petrol. "This first step marks the start of a longer programme that will investigate both biofuels and e-fuels for their potential to power the Bentleys of past and present in a sustainable way," the firm said. As part of its bold Beyond100 transformation strategy, Bentley will develop synthetic fuel technology alongside its electrification programme, with the aim of increasing the sustainability of its combustion engines. Putting sustainable fuels into production will "allow customers to enjoy their current and classic Bentleys responsibly for years to come," the firm said. It estimates that more than 80% of all Bentley models ever built remain on the road.
  16. The Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex have paid tribute to their grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh. In separate statements, Prince William described him as an "extraordinary man", while Prince Harry said he was "a man of service, honour and great humour" and the "legend of banter". "I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job," Prince William added. Prince Philip died at Windsor Castle on Friday aged 99. It comes as parliaments across the UK were recalled to remember the duke. Prince Philip: What are the plans for his funeral? How Prince Harry can attend the funeral "My grandfather's century of life was defined by service - to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family," Prince William said in a statement. "I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life - both through good times and the hardest days. "I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. "I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!" He added that he and his wife, Catherine, would "continue to do what he would have wanted and will support the Queen in the years ahead". Paying tribute to his grandfather, Prince Harry said: "He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm - and also because you never knew what he might say next. "He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the monarch, a decorated serviceman, a prince and a duke. "But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right 'til the end." 2px presentational grey line There was clearly a lot of fun By Jonny Dymond, Royal correspondent He walked next to them on the hardest public day of their lives, in the public procession behind their mother's coffin. And now the brothers pay tribute in their own style, with tenderness and with love. Harry, you may have noticed, now lives in California. His message is more informal, with memories of family outings, the back and forth of conversation, of a grandfather never short of a quip or an impatient snort. William writes as a grandson who has lost a guide and support; but also as a father who saw the mutual delight of grandfather and son together. Both men flesh out in the few words they write the man they, and the nation, have said farewell to. There was clearly a lot of laughter. There was clearly a lot of fun. Once more the gruff caricature we were left with of the duke is re-drawn, and filled out. 2px presentational grey line Prince Harry described Prince Philip as "a rock" for the Queen "with unparalleled devotion". "While I could go on, I know that right now he would say to all of us, beer in hand, 'Oh do get on with it!'" he said. "So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your dedication to Granny, and for always being yourself." Prince Harry signed off his message with the words "Per Mare, Per Terram", meaning "By Sea, By Land" in Latin - the motto of the Royal Marines, of which Prince Philip and Prince Harry were both Captain General.

  18. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church also noted the prince's "commitment to the education and advancement of future generations". The spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, wrote to the Queen and Prince Charles, saying the Duke would be remembered for having lived a meaningful life. President Xi Jinping of China also sent his condolences to Queen Elizabeth. The duke, whose death was announced by Buckingham Palace on Friday, accompanied the Queen during hundreds of overseas visits. 'Cherish the memories' Prince Philip had blood ties with a number of former or current European royal households, and many of their members sent condolences. The telegram from King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain was particularly poignant, sending "all our love and affection" to Aunt Lilibet (the affectionate name used by the duke for his wife) and Dear Uncle Philip. "We shall never forget the moments that we shared with him," they told the Queen. Sweden's King Carl Gustaf said the duke had been "a great friend of our family for many years, a relation we have deeply valued". Swedish royal family spokeswoman Margareta Thorgren told the BBC the king and the duke had sailed together in England, adding: "That was the start of a great friendship between them." The Dutch royal family said they remembered Prince Philip with great respect, adding: "His lively personality made an indelible impression." Belgium's King Philippe said he and Queen Mathilde would "always cherish the memories of our warm encounters". 'A pillar for the Queen' Tributes came in too from the Commonwealth - 54 nations, most with roots in the British Empire and home to 2.4 billion people.

  21. The OnePlus Watch is the long-rumored smartwatch that isn’t just real – it’s a polished wearable that looks like it could rank up with the top smartwatches of the day. ‘Look’ being the operative word – for this hands-on with the smartwatch, we’ll only be talking about the smartwatch’s appearance. The OnePlus Watch looks similar to other top-line smartwatches like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, with a circular design and two function buttons on the right side. The stainless steel metal watch body has a glossy finish, which is actually a nice change from the matte finishes and/or colored aluminum that festoon most of today’s watches. It’s also a pretty hefty smartwatch, with a 46mm width and density that makes it too far on the large side for anyone with slimmer wrists or who prefers smaller watch faces. But the wearable will suit those who like their watches dense, with a design and material finish that felt more polished than your average smart device. The rubber-like watch band is a nice material with rivulets running down the sides, a nice touch compared to the flat wristbands in other smartphones, though its thickness can mean some skin pinching when tucking the band back under itself until you’ve worn it in. In summary, the watch looks higher quality than other smartwatches at its price, which is easily half that of comparable Apple Watches and Samsung Galaxy Watches. As to how its fitness, performance, battery, software, and overall user experience chalks up to every other smartphone out there – you’ll just have to wait along with us until our full review goes live. OnePlus Watch price and release date The OnePlus Watch will come in one size and configuration: 46mm watch face with 1GB RAM and 4GB storage, and a single color: Midnight Black. It will go on sale on the OnePlus website on April 14 for $159 (around £115 / AU$208). There is also a Cobalt Limited Edition in the works, which swaps out the stainless steel case for a cobalt alloy that’s “twice as hard and more corrosion-resistant” than steel, per a March press release. The usual watch face has been swapped for specially-treated sapphire glass with “a Mohs rating of 9,” per the press release, suggesting a greater scratch resistance and brightness than the glass on the standard model. OnePlus hasn’t announced a price or release date for this version.
  22. An unidentified Radeon Pro graphics card has emerged overseas in China. The graphics card, which appeared on the Chiphell forums, could be one of AMD's forthcoming Big Navi Radeon Pro offerings. But take this leak with a grain of salt. Like AMD's other Radeon Pro SKUs, the mysterious graphics card retains the dual-slot design and a shroud with the characteristic blue and silver theme. Given the silver stripe in the middle of the shroud, it should be a Radeon Pro W-series card as opposed to a Radeon Pro WX-series model. The cooler itself doesn't resemble the existing designs on the Radeon Pro W5700 or W5500. Therefore, it's safe for us to assume that the enigmatic graphics card may be a next-generation RDNA 2 Radeon Pro graphics card. The sticker clearly states that this particular unit is an engineering sample so the final design could be completely different. The Chiphell forum user covered the serial number for obvious reasons, and the barcode is too small to decrypt. However, AMD's Radeon Pro graphics card typically take after their mainstream counterparts. So far the chipmaker has released the Radeon RX 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6700 XT so the graphics card in question is possibly based on one of the three launched models. If we had to take a guess, the graphics card is probably the Radeon Pro W6800. If so, then it should leverage the Navi 21 silicon, which is the die that AMD utilizes for the current Radeon RX 6900 XT and Radeon RX 6800 (XT). Another sticker on the back of the graphics card points to Samsung 16GB, which alludes to the memory chips that are inside the graphics card. Sadly, this tiny bit of information doesn't help us decode the exact silicon that the graphics card is based around. The Radeon RX 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6700 XT all employ Samsung 16 Gbps GDDR6 memory chips. There is also mention of "Full Secure TT GLXL A1 ASIC," which we haven't been able to decipher. The user's photographs don't reveal the graphics card's power connectors or display outputs. AMD has been known to mix things up so the graphics card may offer standard DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort outputs. Unfortunately for us, it also blocks the back of the PCB so we can't dig deeper into the memory chips.
