  1. El-Sisi emphasised to military students the need for a "very ambitious plan" for the economy, industry, and production requirements aimed at diminishing foreign currency expenditure by establishing domestic substitutes. “As long as we cannot secure this large value [of the import bill] by working, exports and providing alternatives in Egypt, we will suffer,” El-Sisi said. Egypt has suffered from a foreign currency crunch over the past year against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war and the global economic crisis, which placed pressure on local currency and caused inflation to soar. Car fuel El-Sisi promised the po[CENSORED]ce that essential goods would remain available for several months. However, he highlighted the difficulty of providing fuel for millions of cars nationwide. El-Sisi's comments come as people wait for the Fuel Automatic Pricing Committee (FAPC) to make a judgement regarding potential adjustments in fuel prices for Q3 of 2023. The committee, which meets every three months, raised diesel prices last May by EGP 1 to 8.25 Egyptian pounds but maintained all other gasoline prices. “We have 10 million cars moving across the entire republic daily,” El-Sisi said. “We need to get them the required fuel, of which we import a large part.” Mazut, electricity According to El-Sisi, for power plants to operate at full capacity despite the rising temperatures, 18,000 tonnes of mazut are needed daily. “Monthly, we need more than half a million tons of mazut, which costs around $300-350 million,” the president noted. He further stated that Egypt would have a serious issue if not for the current significant natural gas output. Egypt has embarked on a load-shedding programme since mid-July amid the heatwave that has caused consumption to exceed the gas available for power stations. High prices El-Sisi discussed the rise in commodity prices and reaffirmed that the government is working on several measures to lessen the effects of the ongoing crisis. He continued by saying that Egypt is always eager to have sufficient supplies of staples like wheat, maise and cooking oil to last for five to six months. According to El-Sisi, Egypt's annual wheat consumption might exceed 20 million tons, and the country will still need to import at least half of its needs. He pointed out that Egypt imports more than 90 percent of the cooking oil it needs. El-Sisi stated that Egypt will have more than three million feddans (one feddan is equal to 1.038 acres) in various regions of the country during the upcoming months but added that the government will still need to import significant amounts of its goods to meet people's requirements. “We have 105 million [citizens] and nine million [foreign migrants] who are living with us. We need to keep their needs available in Egypt,” the president stressed. https://english.ahram.org.eg/News/506848.aspx
  2. Slick ads like to portray the future of transportation as clean and quiet. They show cars that gently purr, without emitting harmful emissions, along almost empty roads through unspoiled nature, with their occupants on their way to work or to shop in clean cities without traffic jams. The reality, of course, is somewhat different, as traffic jams, noise and the stench of exhaust fumes are, in fact, ubiquitous in Germany. According to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the market share of electric cars in the country has grown, but it is still comparatively small. Ten years ago, they accounted for 0.02% of the total number of cars on the road; today that figure is at 2.08%. This means that every 50th car is a purely electrically powered vehicle. You may welcome that trend or not. You may regret that almost 98% of cars are still powered by combustion engines. You may even celebrate every new electric vehicle that rolls off the assembly line, or be a proponent of driving a "real" car. Wherever you stand on the issue, the trend towards electromobility is expected to continue. The question is whether Germany's automobile industry, one of the key pillars of the economy, is prepared for the future. Germany lagging behind others Germany is currently not at the forefront of e-mobility. "By continuing to reduce the scrappage scheme bonuses, Economy Minister Robert Habeck has put the brake on electric cars in Germany," says Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, formerly professor of Automotive Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen and now an independent consultant. He estimates that the market share of electric cars in Germany will decline next year. Globally, he says, the outlook is equally bleak. "Only China will continue at full speed, and that will pay off twice and three times over for the Chinese car industry." Due to the German Constitutional Court's recent ruling forcing the ruling coalition to make savings, the government had to discontinue the electric vehicle subsidy earlier than planned. As of December 18, it was no longer possible to apply for such subsidies for the purchase of an electric vehicle. Stefan Bratzel, head of the Center of Automotive Management in Bergisch Gladbach near Cologne, is also pessimistic. In his view, "the race for electromobility in Germany, Europe and China is already over." Ramping up the market rapidly is key, he says. However, he cautions that the targets "set by the German government are too ambitious. They will not be achieved." According to the government's assessment, around 15 million electric vehicles should be on the road in Germany by 2030. https://www.dw.com/en/german-auto-industry-will-2024-mark-a-turning-point/a-67718435
  3. As the world bid farewell to 2023 and welcomed 2024, Indian sportspersons ushered into the new year with fresh aspirations to excel across the globe. Like elsewhere, 2024 for Indian sportspersons is a dream year with the Paris Olympics on the horizon. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, despite having a challenging 2023 with unexpected injuries and a performance slump, welcomed the new challenge and said she remains resolute for her ultimate Everest-like challenge. “Paris 2024 looms as my ultimate challenge. It’s akin to climbing Mt. Everest but with the added intensity of conquering it in winter,” PV Sindhu said while quoting American writer Mark Twain’s famous quote: ‘Focus more on your desire than on your doubt and the dream will take care of itself.’ “In the golden era of women’s badminton, pursuing a third Olympic medal is my ultimate challenge—truthfully, my greatest one yet. I am as focused as ever; rest assured, the fire burns brighter and hotter than ever!” Sindhu added. PV Sindhu, a former world champion, has been struggling with injuries since winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Though Sindhu regained form in the second half of 2023, a knee injury at the French Open in October marred her progress. Two-time world champion and Commonwealth Games gold Nikhat Zareen missed out on a gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. However, she secured an Olympic quota for India with a bronze medal at the same competition. India’s first individual Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra took the moment to remember the birthday of Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the father of c modern Olympic Games, who was born on January 1, 1863, in Paris. https://olympics.com/en/news/happy-new-year-2024-indian-sports-reaction-social-media

Reflective Retreat: Deepti Chandy, Therapist and COO at Anna Chandy & Associates, shared, “Our identity is a huge cornerstone that affects both our mental health and well-being. Identity gives us a lot of personal meaning and validation, apart from external validation. It is deeply connected to how we feel about ourselves. For example, today when you meet anyone, one of the first questions we ask is “What do you do?” and that is why a lot of us gain validation from our professional identity and as we know, validation contributes both tangibly and intangibly to our sense of well-being. It would be useful for all of us to focus on mindfulness and self-reflection.” She suggested a few techniques, “10-minute guided meditations, which you can find on Spotify and YouTube. These can be a game changer when you feel emotionally dysregulated. Journalling, on notes in a notebook, voice notes. It will reveal a pattern after a while, that will give you an insight into your thoughts and feelings. Every time you feel triggered, try and make a note. This is will also reveal a pattern as to what could be causing it. Doing a timeline of your life’s journey what you liked and what you would like in the future, helps with goals. Noting things that make you really happy when they make you happy. You can go back and look at them and that will reveal a pattern as well.” If nothing else works, escape the hustle and bustle by welcoming the New Year with a reflective retreat on a solo getaway or a small group retreat where you spend time in nature, meditate and set intentions for the coming year and let this mindful approach foster self-discovery and provide a serene start to your new chapter. 3. 5. Australians and New Zealanders are making final preparations on New Year's Eve to become among the first nations to ring in 2024 as ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza cast a pall over celebrations and heightened tensions across parts of the world. Rain in New Zealand's largest city Auckland is expected to ease by midnight when downtown Sky Tower, the country's tallest structure, erupts with fireworks as the centerpiece of a spectacular annual light show. Two hours later in neighboring Australia, the Sydney Harbor Bridge will become the focal point of a renowned midnight fireworks display and light show viewed annually by around 425 million people worldwide, according to city authorities. More police than ever have been deployed throughout Sydney to ensure safety as more than 1 million people — equivalent to one in five of the city's po[CENSORED]tion — converge on the harbor waterfront for the best available views, state government authorities said in a statement. Many revelers have been camping at the best vantage points since Sunday morning. The waterfront has been the scene of heated pro-Palestinian protests after the sails of the Sydney Opera House were illuminated in the colors of the Israeli flag in response to the October 7 attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas that triggered the war. In New York's Times Square, officials and party organizers say they are prepared to welcome crowds of revelers and ensure their safety. At a security briefing Friday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said there were "no specific threats" to the annual New Year's Eve bash, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of people to the heart of midtown Manhattan. The celebrity-filled event will include live performances from Flo Rida, Megan Thee Stallion and LL Cool J, as well as televised appearances from Cardi B and others. Organizers said in-person attendance is expected to return to pre-COVID levels, even as foot traffic around Times Square remains down slightly since the pandemic. Amid near-daily protests in New York sparked by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, police said they would expand the security perimeter around the party, creating a "buffer zone" that will allow them to head off potential demonstrations. "We will be out here with our canines, on horseback, our helicopters, our boats," Adams said. Officials will also monitor protests with drones, he said. "But as we saw last year, after having no specific threats, we get a threat." During last year's New Year's Eve party, a machete-wielding man attacked three police officers a few blocks from Times Square. Security will also be heightened across France on Sunday, with 90,000 law enforcement officers set to be deployed, domestic intelligence chief Céline Berthon said Friday. Of those, 6,000 will be in Paris, where French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said over 1.5 million people are expected to attend celebrations on the Champs-Elysees. Speaking at a press conference, Darmanin cited a "very high terrorist threat" because, in part, of "what is happening in Israel and Palestine," referring to the Israel-Hamas war. Darmanin said that police for the first time will be able to use drones as part of security work and that tens of thousands of firefighters and 5,000 soldiers would also be deployed. New Year's Eve celebrations in the French capital will center on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, including DJ sets, fireworks and video projections on the Arc de Triomphe, highlighting "changes in the city and faces of the Games," according to the press service of the City of Paris. Other planned events include "the largest Mexican wave ever performed" and a "giant karaoke." Local authorities have instituted a ban on the sale of alcohol on and around the Champs Elysees on New Year's Eve, and the public will not be able to access the area with glass bottles and flasks. The security challenge ahead of the Olympics was highlighted when a tourist was killed in a knife attack near the Eiffel Tower on December 2. Large-scale attacks — such as that at the Bataclan in 2015, when Islamic extremists invaded the music hall and shot up cafe terraces, killing 130 people — also loom in memory. The knife attack raised concern in France and abroad about security for the Games that begin July 26, in just under seven months. But law enforcement officials appear eager to show off a security-ready Paris. In Muslim-majority Pakistan, the government has banned all New Year's Eve celebrations as an act of solidarity with the Palestinians. In an overnight televised message, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar urged Pakistanis to "show solidarity with the oppressed people of Gaza" by beginning the new year with simplicity. Kakar said Muslims across the world were saddened over Israel's attacks on Gaza that resulted in the killings of thousands of innocent people. https://www.voanews.com/a/australians-new-zealanders-preparing-to-be-among-first-to-ring-in-2024-/7419066.html
