Rabat - The International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) has approved football player Brahim Diaz's decision for change of sport nationality. The football world’s governing body notified the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) of this news on Tuesday. The official X sports page (formerly Twitter) TFT Morocco also shared a post concerning the news. “Brahim Diaz has officially changed his sporting nationality and becomes a Moroccan international,” the post stated, stressing that “FIFA validated his change of sport nationality and notified the FRMF of its decision.” The Real Madrid player’s official change of his sport nationality has enabled him to defend the colors of the Moroccan national football team in the upcoming friendly games against Angola and Mauritania. Last month, FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa and Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui convened with the Real Madrid star in Morocco, where they introduced the player to the sporting project they are organizing and elaborated on the key role he will play in the national team. Diaz is reportedly on board with the project, which led him to opt for becoming an Atlas Lion. Morocco’s next friendly games are scheduled on March 22 and 26 at the Adrar stadium in the southern city Agadir. These games are part of Morocco’s preparations for the forthcoming competitions, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The attacking midfielder had once played for Spain's Espoirs in a friendly game against Lithuania in 2021, where he contributed to a 4-0 victory by scoring a goal.Your support allows us to continue delivering quality journalism that is accessible to audiences across the globe. The first U.S. government flight with humanitarian aid for Gaza is scheduled to arrive in Egypt's northern Sinai on Tuesday, according to senior Biden administration officials. Once the military-facilitated flight lands, the plane's cargo will be transferred to the United Nations, which will deliver the materials to Gaza. It's the first of three planned U.S. flights, the officials said. "This will be to bring a series of items, medical items, food aid, winter items, given that winter is coming in Gaza," a senior administration official said on a call with reporters. Asked how the delivery will differ from the truckloads of aid that have already entered Gaza, an official said that "some of these things have already gone in, but there’ll be additional items." More than 2,000 truckloads of aid have been delivered to Gaza since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, according to the administration, including about 800 during the first four days of the humanitarian pause. Upon the end of the pause in fighting for hostage releases, a separate senior administration official said, "this level or increased levels" of aid to Gaza must be sustained. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/national-international/first-u-s-humanitarian-aid-flight-for-gaza-set-to-land-in-egypt/3288671/

[Gadgets] Apple may not launch new AirTag in 2024, here’s why

might have to wait a bit longer. According to a recent report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple appears to be hitting the brakes on its item tracker plans, with a potential launch now pushed to 2025. Gurman, known for his reliable Apple leaks, explains that several factors might be contributing to this delay. Firstly, Apple reportedly has ample unsold inventory of the first-generation AirTag. Launching a new version so soon could lead to market saturation and hinder sales of the existing model. “Apple retail store back rooms and Apple device storage warehouses are still full to the brim with AirTags,” notes the report. Gurman emphasises that Apple is "in no rush" with AirTag 2, preferring to wait until they have a truly compelling reason to refresh the device. Gurman’s claims match of analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who had also suggested that AirTag 2 will arrive in 2025. “The mass production schedule for AirTag 2 has been postponed to 2025,” Kuo had said on X. The current AirTags, released in 2021, have generally received positive reviews for their sleek design, accurate tracking, and integration with the Find My app. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/gadgets-news/apple-may-not-launch-new-airtag-in-2024-heres-why/articleshow/106623509.cms -
13 March 2024, Cairo, Egypt – A recent capacity-building training in data analytics and dissemination, using R software, aims to strengthen data management in health emergency response in Egypt. The session was held in Cairo on 25–29 February 2024. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean organized the training with the WHO Country Office in Egypt, the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Po[CENSORED]tion, and the Egypt Field Epidemiology Training Program (Egypt-FETP). Thirty epidemiologists and surveillance officers from the Ministry’s preventive sector took part in the training. Personnel from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Middle East/North Africa Regional Office and WHO Egypt also participated. R software is an open-source programming language tool that is increasingly po[CENSORED]r among public health professionals around the world. The training enhanced the ability of attendees to manage and analyse health emergency data using the tool.Participants gained a foundational knowledge of the R language and RStudio – a user-friendly interface for R. They also acquired skills to perform essential data steps, such as data checking and processing; to conduct analyses; and to generate reports. All these aspects are crucial to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of information needed to shape public health decisions and strategies. The training is the first step towards creating a network of public health professionals skilled in the use of R software. Through training of trainers’ sessions, the attendees can pass on their new knowledge to health professionals from the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Po[CENSORED]tion. These individuals can then train others to use the tool. WHO Representative in Egypt Dr Nima Saeed Abid attended the training’s closing session, along with senior management from the Ministry. Reference was made to the value of the ongoing collaboration between WHO and the Ministry in organizing these trainings and to the shared commitment to build capacities for effective and timely detection and response to health emergencies. WHO will continue to help public health professionals leverage the power of R software, which is a major advance for public health. This approach reflects WHO’s commitment to promote innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing among public health professionals worldwide. https://www.emro.who.int/egy/egypt-news/who-builds-egypts-capacities-to-manage-and-analyse-health-data.html

has laid off hundreds of employees working on its hardware, voice assistance and engineering teams as part of cost-cutting measures. The cuts come as Google looks towards “responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead,” the company said in a statement. “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally,” it said.Google earlier said it was eliminating a few hundred roles, with most of the impact on its augmented reality hardware team. The cuts follow pledges by executives of Google and its parent company Alphabet to reduce costs. A year ago, Google said it would lay off 12,000 employees or around 6% of its workforce. In a post on X — previously known as Twitter — the Alphabet Workers Union described the job cuts as “another round of needless layoffs.” “Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter,” the union wrote. “We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe!” Google is not the only technology company cutting back. In the past year, Meta — the parent company of Facebook — has slashed more than 20,000 jobs to reassure investors. Meta’s stock price gained about 178% in 2023. Spotify said in December that it was axing 17% of its global workforce, the music streaming service’s third round of layoffs in 2023 as it moved to slash costs and improve its profitability. Earlier this week, Amazon laid off hundreds of employees in its Prime Video and studios units. It also will lay off about 500 employees who work on its livestreaming platform Twitch. Amazon has cut thousands of jobs after a hiring surge during the pandemic. In March, Amazon announced that it planned to lay off 9,000 employees, on top of 18,000 employees it said that it would lay off in January 2023. Google is currently locked in a fierce rivalry with Microsoft as both firms strive to lead in the artificial intelligence domain. Microsoft has stepped up its artificial intelligence offerings to rival Google’s. In September, Microsoft introduced a Copilot feature that incorporates artificial intelligence into products like search engine Bing, browser Edge as well as Windows for its corporate customers. https://www.billboard.com/business/business-news/google-layoffs-hardware-voice-assistant-engineering-teams-job-cuts-1235580000/

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, engaged in talks with Senegal’s Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, on Thursday in Banjul, Gambia. The discussions, which took place on the sidelines of the upcoming 15th session of the Islamic Summit Conference, revolved around strengthening bilateral relations and addressing mutual interests and regional challenges. Highlighting the significance of the meeting, both parties emphasized the commitment to deepen ties under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Senegal’s newly appointed Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The longstanding relationship between Morocco and Senegal spans various sectors, including politics, economics, culture, social, and spiritual domains, underscoring the depth of their cooperation. This meeting underscores the close ties between Morocco and Senegal. Last month, Aziz Akhannouch, Morocco’s Head of Government, represented King Mohammed VI at President Faye’s inauguration ceremony. Notably, King Mohammed VI was the only head of state outside the sub-region to receive an invitation, highlighting the exceptional nature of the Morocco-Senegal relationship. Senegal is a strong supporter of Morocco’s territorial integrity in Western Sahara, and is one of the few African nations to open consulates in Morocco’s southern provinces in a symbolic gesture of support. Attended by key diplomats and officials, including Mohamed Methqal, Ambassador and General Director of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, and Ahmed Belhaj, the Chargé d’affaires of the Moroccan Embassy in Gambia, the meeting underscored the strategic importance of collaboration between the two nations. The focus on strengthening ties between Morocco and Senegal reflects a broader trend of Morocco’s proactive diplomacy in Africa. The kingdom is actively seeking to solidify partnerships and collaborations across the continent. © Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved. The mystery behind why Alaskan horses, cryptodiran turtles and island lizards shrunk over time may have been solved in a new study. The new theoretical research proposes that animal size over time depends on two key ecological factors: the intensity of direct competition for resources between species, and the risk of extinction from the environment. Using computer models simulating evolution, the study, published today (Thursday, 18 January) in communications biology, identifies why some species gradually get smaller, as indicated by fossil records. Dr Shovonlal Roy, an ecosystem modeller from the University of Reading who led the research, said: "Just like how we try to adapt to hot or cold weather depending on where we live, our research shows animal size can get bigger or smaller over long periods depending on the habitat or environment. "In places and times where there's lots of competition between different species for food and shelter, animal sizes often get smaller as the species spread out and adapt to the distribution of resources and competitors. For example, small horses that lived in Alaska during the Ice Age rapidly shrank due to changes in the climate and vegetation. “Where direct competition is less, sizes tend to get bigger, even though being really big and few in number can make animals more vulnerable to dying out – such as what happened with the dinosaurs. “Changes in ecological factors help explain why fossil records shows such confusing mixes of size evolution patterns, with some lineages shrinking over time and others growing." https://www.reading.ac.uk/news/2024/Research-News/Why-animals-shrink-over-time-explained-with-new-evolution-theory

In a bid to preserve a sense of mystery, the jam from the new American Riviera Orchard brand seemed to be spread among friends and influencers. Fashion designer Tracy Robbins posted a picture of the jam on Instagram. It was numbered "17 of 50", suggesting the number of recipients of this first fruit of the new business. The arrival of Meghan's new California-based lifestyle brand had been signalled on social media last month and this suggests that it will be selling food products. What do we know about Meghan's new brand? Five things about Harry and Meghan's brand revamp Why did Harry and Meghan leave the Royal Family? There seemed to be have been something of a re-launch for Meghan and husband Prince Harry's brands and businesses this year, beginning with the overhaul of their regal-looking website under the sussex.com label. Their latest projects seem to be moving away from a previous focus on their time as working royals, such as their Netflix film Harry and Meghan and Prince Harry's memoir Spare. The hint about the strawberry jam from Meghan's American Riviera Orchard brand seems to fit with the couple's latest Netflix plans. Meghan is going to launch a Netflix show which will "celebrate the joys of cooking and gardening, entertaining, and friendship". Prince Harry will be involved in another Netflix venture showing the inside track on the world of polo. That's the equestrian sport, not the mints. Delfina Blaquier, married to Prince Harry's polo-playing friend Nacho Figueras, also posted a picture of the new jam, with hers labelled "10 of 50". The social media trail for American Riviera Orchard evokes a sense of the couple's home in California - and this soft launch for the jam show pictures of the jars in a sunny basket of lemons. It's not known how much items from the new lifestyle brand will cost. Although there are already plenty of other royals getting into jams. Visitors to the gift shops in royal palaces can get a Buckingham Palace Strawberry Preserve for £3.95 or Windsor Castle Fine Cut Seville Orange Marmalade, also for £3.95. On both sides of the Atlantic they seem to be conserving their finances. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-68827708

Rabat - Morocco is set to implement tighter regulations on cigarette sales starting January 1, 2024, with the aim to limit the levels of tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide in cigarettes available for sale across the country. The new rules, outlined in Decree No. 2-21-235 issued in September 2021, set maximum levels of the substances in cigarettes sold in the Moroccan market. Tar content will be capped at 10 milligrams, nicotine at 1 milligram, and carbon monoxide at 10 milligrams. Cigarettes surpassing said thresholds will be barred from sale. Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration announced that all imported or locally produced cigarette displays or consumption after January 1, 2024, must be accompanied by laboratory analysis results from accredited specialized labs. The administration will be responsible for monitoring the content of both imported and locally produced cigarettes to ensure compliance with the new regulations. The decision aims to address concerns regarding nicotine addiction, increased heart disease risks due to carbon monoxide, and potential cancer-related effects linked to tar in cigarettes. The news comes a week after the Commission for the Approval of Manufactured Tobacco Product Prices greenlighted a price hike in cigarette prices starting January 1, 2024. Cigarette packs will see a price increase between 1 to 2 dirhams, varying across brands. The decision follows the tax reforms outlined in the 2022 budget, which will see a progressive trajectory for the domestic consumption tax (TIC) on tobacco. The plan projects an increase from MAD 100 in 2022 to a substantial MAD 550 by 2026. The anticipated revenue surge from the domestic consumption tax on manufactured tobacco in the fiscal year 2023, estimated at around MAD 12.5 billion ($1.1 billion), significantly surpasses the 11.8 billion Moroccan dirhams collected in 2022, marking a 5.82% increase. If 2023 was the year of AI software, 2024 is shaping up to be the year of AI hardware. Over the past few months, companies like Google, Samsung, Meta and Microsoft have shown off smartphones and laptops – even glasses – all of which claim to heavily integrate generative artificial intelligence. But the moment has also given rise to a new type of device centered around getting users to interact with AI. At an event in the TWA Hotel in New York City last month, customers took delivery of the very first Rabbit R1s. Bright orange and about the size and shape of a packet of sticky notes, the device has a compact, 2.88-inch screen, a camera in the top right corner, a scroll wheel, and a button on the side to activate voice controls. The idea, according to Rabbit CEO Jesse Lyu, is to reduce the number of steps it takes to do something you currently do on a smartphone. “Our mission is to create the simplest computer – something so intuitive that you don’t need to learn how to use it,” Lyu said at the company’s Consumer Electronics Show keynote in January. Instead of sifting through pages of apps and notifications, all while trying not to get distracted by Instagram, Rabbit says users can simply speak a command to the R1. Then, using an artificial intelligence technology they call a 'Large Action Model,' the device will fulfill that demand.Daniel Ko is a fractional CFO for AI startups. He says his work doesn’t involve Rabbit at the moment – he’s just a customer for now – but he sees a lot of potential in the R1. “Personally, for me, I bought it because it looked super cool and, in a way, it's the first generation product of something that could be, you know, like the next iPhone maybe,” Ko told ABC Audio. “I think in this moment I’m just curious,” said Danny Cole, an artist based in New York City who also has an R1. He says he likes the idea of a device that moves people away from smartphones. https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/ai-gadgets-good/story?id=109900173
