  3. Rabat - Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is pledging more measures in response to the Israeli occupation forces’ aggression against Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. On Wednesday, De Croo said that his country will bar Israeli extremists who commit violence in the occupied West Bank from entering the country. “Violence against civilians will have consequences. Extremist settlers in the West Bank will be banned from entering Belgium. We will work with the U.S. on sanctions targeting individuals involved in actions that undermine peace, security, and stability in the West Bank,” De Croo wrote on X, formerly Twitter. De Croo’s remarks come in line with Belgium's strong position against the Israeli aggression against civilians across the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. Since October 7, Israeli occupation forces have killed over 16,000 Palestinians, including children and women while many are still missing or under the rubble. Israel’s bloody war continues with troops targeting residential homes, shelters, and hospitals where both patients and people seeking refuge are located. The latest attack came today when an Israeli warplane bombed a mosque in Gaza, killing at least 12 civilians and injuring dozens. The occupation’s airstrikes have also targeted homes in the region, killing and injuring dozens. Belgium has been backing a complete ceasefire in the besieged strip. The European country has frequently reiterated its plan to recognize the state of Palestine while vowing to impose sanctions against the Israeli occupation. The Belgian position has triggered frustration from the Israeli side, with the country’s foreign ministry summoning Belgium’s ambassador in addition to Spain’s. In November, Israel’s foreign minister Eli Cohen described the Belgian and Spanish positions as “false claims.” “We condemn the false claims of the Prime ministers of Spain and Belgium who give support to terrorism… Israel is acting according to international law,” Cohen claimed. 4. WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Comedian John Oliver has succeeded in his campaign to have what he describes as a weird, puking bird with a colorful mullet win New Zealand’s Bird of the Century contest. He managed to elbow out the iconic national bird, the kiwi. Conservation group Forest and Bird announced Wednesday that Oliver’s favored water bird, the pūteketeke, had won after Oliver went all-out in a humorous campaign for the bird on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight.” The North Island brown kiwi came in second. Vote checkers in New Zealand were so overwhelmed by Oliver’s foreign interference they had to postpone naming the winning bird for two days. Usually billed Bird of the Year, the annual event is held to raise awareness about the plight of the nation’s native birds, some of which have been driven to extinction. This year, the contest was named Bird of the Century to mark the group’s centennial. Oliver exploited a loophole in the rules allowing anybody with a valid email address to cast a vote. Oliver had a billboard erected for “The Lord of the Wings” in New Zealand’s capital, Wellington. He also put up billboards in Paris, Tokyo, London and Mumbai, India. He had a plane with a banner fly over Ipanema Beach in Brazil. And he wore an oversize bird costume on Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show.” “After all, this is what democracy is all about,” Oliver said on his show. “America interfering in foreign elections.” Forest and Bird did not immediately release the final vote tally Wednesday but said the group received more than 350,000 verified votes, more than six times the previous record of 56,700 votes in 2021. They said Oliver’s “high-powered” campaign temporarily crashed their voting verification system. “It’s been pretty crazy, in the best possible way,” Chief Executive Nicola Toki told The Associated Press before the winner was announced. New Zealand is unusual in that birds developed as the dominant animals before humans arrived. “If you think about the wildlife in New Zealand, we don’t have lions and tigers and bears,” Toki said. Despite nearly nine of every 10 New Zealanders now living in towns or cities, she added, many retain a deep love of nature. “We have this intangible and extraordinarily powerful connection to our wildlife and our birds,” Toki said. The contest has survived previous controversies. Election scrutineers in 2020 discovered about 1,500 fraudulent votes for the little spotted kiwi. And two years ago, the contest was won by a bat, which was allowed because it was considered part of the bird family by Indigenous Māori. This year, the organizers said they eliminated more fraudulent votes, including 40,000 cast by a single person for the eastern rockhopper penguin. Toki said that when the contest began in 2005, they had a total of 865 votes, which they considered a great success. She said the previous record vote count was broken within a couple of hours of Oliver launching his campaign. Toki said Oliver contacted the group earlier this year asking if he could champion a bird. They had told him to go for it, not realizing what was to come. “I was cry laughing,” Toki said when she watched Oliver’s segment. Oliver described how the pūteketeke, which number less than 1,000 in New Zealand and are also known as the Australasian crested grebe, eats its own feathers before vomiting them back up. “They have a mating dance where they both grab a clump of wet grass and chest bump each other before standing around unsure of what to do next,” Oliver said on his show, adding that he’d never identified more with anything in his life. Some in New Zealand pushed back against Oliver’s campaign. One group put up billboards reading: “Dear John, don’t disrupt the pecking order,” while others urged people to vote for the kiwi. Oliver responded by saying the kiwi looked like “a rat carrying a toothpick.” “For the record, all of your birds are great, and it would be an honor to lose to any of them when the results are announced on Wednesday,” Oliver said on his show. “The reason it is so easy for me to say that is that we aren’t going to lose, are we? We are going to win, and we are going to win by a lot.” https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/new-zealand-bird-of-the-century-john-oliver-puteketeke-rcna125257
  5. Rabat - The automotive industry in Morocco has continued on its positive momentum, with exports soaring by 37% year-on-year at the end of July 2023. According to a monthly publication from Office d’Echange (OE), automotive exports in Morocco totaled MAD 82 billion ($8.2 billion) in the first seven months of 2023, up from MAD 59 billion ($5.9 billion) during the same period in 2022. In a report published in August, UNCTAD described Morocco’s automotive industry as “exemplary,” adding that manufacturing is gradually moving towards complex components with high added value. Since 1957, Morocco's automotive industry has undergone a significant transformation. Initially focused on vehicle assembly through the Moroccan Company for Automobile Construction (SOMACA), it has evolved into a full-fledged production sector, as detailed in the report. In 2021, Morocco manufactured over 400,000 vehicles, with $8.3 billion worth of those being exported. Among the exports, $3.4 billion represented fully completed vehicles. The growth in production also resulted in the creation of approximately 220,000 jobs within the industry. Additionally, a network of more than 230 tier 1 and 2 suppliers has emerged, contributing to a local integration rate of 60%. Morocco has strategically positioned itself as a significant production hub, attracting major players such as German Motor Distributors, Renault, part and component supplier Snop, Stellantis Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, and Yazaki – the world's largest wiring harness manufacturer). The country’s automotive industry has achieved a noteworthy milestone by shifting its focus toward producing intricate high-value components, including engine manufacturing, engineering, research, and development. Moreover, Morocco produces approximately 40,000 to 50,000 electric vehicles annually. However, despite these achievements, domestic vehicle registration remains relatively low, with 175,435 units registered in 2021. As a result, the primary focus for vehicle assembly continues to be the European market. Morocco’s ambitious goal is to achieve an annual production of one million cars by 2025 while increasing the local integration rate to 80%. As of 2020, the country already had an annual production capacity of 700,000 vehicles. The government's strategies are centered around enhancing local integration, expanding industrial activities, improving the value chain, facilitating technology transfer, and diversifying export markets. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/09/357426/moroccos-automotive-exports-soar-to-over-8-billion-in-2023
  6. Fez - It seems that there is still more to come in the Abde Ezzalzouli saga as the coach of Spain’s national team claims that the Moroccan-born Barcelna player has definitely “chosen to represent the Spanish side.” The most recent developments in the case suggested that the young Barcelona star has still not made up his mind about whether to represent Morocco’s Atlas Lions or Spain’s La Roja. There have been credible reports that Ezzalzouli’s decision not to play for Morocco at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon was due to his desire to establish himself within the Barcelona squad. With the suggestion that travelling to Cameroon with Morocco would have negatively affected his short and medium-term future at Barcelona, Ezzalzouli is said to have opted to stay with his club while asking the Moroccan federation to give him until MArch to make his mind about which national team to represent. However, Spain’s coach Luis Enrique claimed in an interview yesterday that the FC Barcelona wonderkid has already committed to representing Spain at international level. “Ez Abde? If he is Spanish, he can come. He has chosen to play with the Spanish team and that is always good news. He has few participations at the high level, but what he has done is quite interesting,” Luis Enrique stated in an interview with the digital TV channel Movistar. The Spanish team head coach seemed convinced of the Beni Mellal-born player’s final decision. Enrique’s statements appeared to challenge the position of Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of Morocco’s Royal Football Federation, who had previously stated that the Barcelona player could still join Morocco’s Atlas Lions later this year. In an interview with Moroccan broadcasting station Radio Mars, Lakjaa indicated that Ezzalzouli has only asked for more time to decide between Morocco and Spain. “I spoke to the player by phone and he asked me to give him some time to make his choice whether to represent [Spain or Morocco] in March,” Lakjaa said. Read also: Abde Ezzalzouli Asked For Time to Decide Between Morocco, Spain By March Ezzalzouli’s last-minute decision not to play with Morocco at the ongoing AFCON shocked many Moroccan fans and opened the door for more speculations about his future. Speculation was further fueled after Spanish outlet El Mundo Deportivo wrote that the player’s decision to turn down Morocco’s head coach call-up for the AFCON was a “strategic step” to renounce his decision to represent Morocco and play for Spain instead. There has been much talk about Ezzalzouli’s national team commitment in the past weeks. While the player initially expressed eagerness to play for Morocco’s team, reports indicated he might have been under tremendous pressure from the Spanish football federation to represent its national team. Ezzalzouli has not yet made any official announcement about his final decision, and the understanding remains that he is still thinking about which of the two teams to commit to. It therefore remains to be seen whether Enrique’s latest statement is a decisive turn in the Moroccan-born player’s ultimate choice or mere talk to create more doubts in the Moroccan camp. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/01/346500/ezzalzouli-ldquo-has-chosen-to-represent-spanish-side-rdquo

  8. Rabat - King Mohammed VI appointed today Samira Sitail as Morocco’s new ambassador to France, a statement from the royal palace has announced. Sitail is a former journalist and former director of information at the Moroccan broadcasting channel 2M. Sitail’s appointment comes a month after media appearances went viral of her rebuking of French claims targeting relief efforts Morocco had deployed to address the September 8 devastating earthquake. Some French news outlets had questioned Morocco’s response to the tragic tremor and accused the kingdom of rejecting France’s offer to assist in rescue and relief efforts. In response, Sitail denounced what she described as an attempt by the French political elite to incite Moroccans to revolt against their government and the monarchy. As if their misleading and paternalistic attitude to Morocco’s relief efforts was not enough, she argued, France sought to come and tell Moroccans “‘We want to help you, but your government won’t let us.’ I consider this extremely serious, and it needs to be corrected.” The appointment of a new ambassador to France comes on the heels of simmering diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Paris. Morocco terminated Mohamed Benchaaboun’s duties as ambassador to France in February, 2023. The termination was the culmination of simmering tensions between Rabat and Paris on a large range of strategic issues, with the latest at the time of the Moroccan decision being the perception that France was the orchestrator of a hostile resolution in which the European Parliament accused Morocco of intimidating and harassing journalists and activists. Many observers believe that French MEPs close to Emmanuel Macron were behind the hostile resolution. Meanwhile, France’s decision to slash the number of visas granted to Moroccans by half in 2022 added insult to injury. Despite France’s pledges that consular services between the two countries were fully restored, many Moroccans have continued to complain about delays of appointments and unjustified rejections of their visa applications. The appointment of a new Moroccan ambassador in Paris now raises the question of whether or not the two erstwhile “strategic allies” will be able to gradually rebuild mutual confidence and further cement their diplomatic relations in the coming months and years. 13. Nvidia's latest Version R535 U9 driver (537.99) for professional graphics cards lists an unannounced RTX 5880 Ada Generation graphics card, as noticed by HXL. Given the fact that the model number of the product is so close to the flagship RTX 5880 Ada Generation board for professional visualization, it's reasonable to speculate that this is based on the AD102 GPU, but with reduced performance. As Nvidia can no longer ship high-performance AD102-based graphics cards to China due to the latest U.S. export rules, a logical assumption would be that the RTX 5880 Ada is a cut-down version of the RTX 6000 Ada specifically tailored for the Chinese market. However, it may not be the case as Nvidia hasn't commented on the matter, and . The R535 U9 driver with the RTX 5880 Ada is available both from Nvidia China and Nvidia Global websites. Based on the AD102 GPU with 18,176 CUDA cores and 48 GB of 384-bit GDDR6 memory, Nvidia's RTX 6000 Ada Generation graphics card is extremely powerful and its shipments to China are now restricted (though it's still listed at Nvidia's Chinese website). Meanwhile, the company's second most powerful graphics board for professional visualization market is the RTX 5000 Ada Generation board — an AD102-powered product with 12,800 CUDA cores with 32 GB of 256-bit GDDR6 memory. The gap between the range-topping RTX 6000 Ada, which sells for $6,800, and the second-best RTX 5000 Ada, which has an MSRP of $4,000, is perhaps just a bit too wide for Nvidia to leave it unfilled, so the RTX 5880 Ada Generation could be that filler not only for the Chinese market, but for the global market as well. For now, neither Nvidia's global nor the company's Chinese websites list the RTX 5880 Ada Generation graphics card. You can see the above specifications, and pay particular note to the "Total Processing Power" (TPP) and "Performance Density" (PD) rows. Those are key elements in the latest U.S. export restrictions. Any GPU with more than a 4,800 TPP score is now subject to export controls, and the RTX 6000 Ada obviously falls into that category with a TPP of 5,828. The second aspect of the restrictions, PD, doesn't come into play as these are not technically data center parts. However, it's interesting to note that if the regulations were to change and begin considering that factor — because the U.S. Department of Commerce clearly isn't done tweaking its rules — the RTX 4500 Ada and above all have a PD rating of more than 6.0. We don't have any detailed specifications for the RTX 5880 Ada yet, so for now we can only wonder whether this is a China-only device, or a product that will sit between the RTX 5000 Ada and the RTX 6000 Ada. Either way, Nvidia is preparing to release yet another AD102-based ProViz graphics board. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-lists-rtx-5880-ada-gpu-presumably-a-downgraded-replacement-for-the-rtx-6000-ada-in-china
  14. Alas, The Game Awards has come to an end—and while there've been plenty of exciting trailers and glitzy celeb appearances, it's easy to get numb to the star factor. One returning guest, however, was far more welcome than any Hollywood name-drop: the man, the myth, the legend: Flute Guy. Arriving to the stage as part of The Game Awards orchestra, prolific musician and composer Pedro Eustache joined his contemporaries to play through the themes of this year's winners. He took to the stage with his usual aplomb, advancing through several tiers of wind instrument before reaching his final form. Here's a montage courtesy of Ratatoskr on YouTube, aptly titled "Flute Guy Goes Hard Again"—as well as some boots-on-the-ground footage by GameSpot's managing editor Tamoor Hussain. After a long ream of trailers, announcements, and criminally-short acceptance speeches, just seeing someone get up and stage and vibe is immaculate. And that's not to discredit the work of the rest of the orchestra, who are doing an absolutely stunning job. But this man's found himself, and that's resonated with the gaming public at large. In an interview with the Verge last year, Eustache touched on why he's so dang enthusiastic about his performances at the show, despite being a self-described "dinosaur" that "doesn't play video games." Three simple words: "Music is music." Eustache then went on to say that "if there's good music, I play and respond the way I did at The Game Awards." Some things are just universal.Eustache himself has a long and illustrious career. Outside of games, he's worked on Dune's Oscar-Winning score with Hans Zimmer, while his resume proudly carries the names of composers like John Williams (Star Wars) and fellow musicians such as Paul McCartney. Y'know, from The Beatles? No big deal. His return wasn't a surprise, though. At the start of the month, Eustache announced he'd be coming back to the awards in a short video, opened by a beatboxing solo that presumably exists just to get the excitement outta his body. He's backed by an armoury of instruments so numerous I didn't even notice them at first, mistaking them for a wooden screen of some kind.I figure Eustache's particular brand of moxie resonates with us largely because, as people who play, write about, or make games—we're all just kinda weird, right? Another musical highlight of the awards, in between all the glimmering trailers and celebrities, was a live performance of a song from Alan Wake 2. Which is a horror game that has a cheesy, stage-musical-style interlude segment played completely straight. Once you scrape away all the gaff we have to put up with to keep things profitable, everybody just wants to vibe like Eustache. https://www.pcgamer.com/big-name-celebs-are-fine-but-flute-guys-return-to-the-game-awards-was-the-main-event/
