The mystery behind why Alaskan horses, cryptodiran turtles and island lizards shrunk over time may have been solved in a new study. The new theoretical research proposes that animal size over time depends on two key ecological factors: the intensity of direct competition for resources between species, and the risk of extinction from the environment. Using computer models simulating evolution, the study, published today (Thursday, 18 January) in communications biology, identifies why some species gradually get smaller, as indicated by fossil records. Dr Shovonlal Roy, an ecosystem modeller from the University of Reading who led the research, said: "Just like how we try to adapt to hot or cold weather depending on where we live, our research shows animal size can get bigger or smaller over long periods depending on the habitat or environment. "In places and times where there's lots of competition between different species for food and shelter, animal sizes often get smaller as the species spread out and adapt to the distribution of resources and competitors. Rabat - Morocco is set to implement tighter regulations on cigarette sales starting January 1, 2024, with the aim to limit the levels of tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide in cigarettes available for sale across the country. Loongson Technology, one of China's fabless chipmakers, has provided an update on the upcoming 9A1000 graphics card at the company's third-quarter earnings call. The 9A1000, which reportedly offers performance comparable to a Radeon RX 550, will go into tape out in Q3 2024. The U.S. blockade of China's access to advanced semiconductors and tools has hampered the country's technological development. But it's a mixed blessing as it has also motivated China to work toward technological self-sufficiency. China hasn't made gigantic strides in the graphics card space yet, but it's getting there. Over the last few years, we've seen some intriguing graphics products from outfits such as Biren, Innosilicon, Jingjia Micro, and Moore Threads. Loongson will also add its grain of sand to China's domestic graphics card ambition. Now, much is known about the 9A1000. Hu Weiwu, Loongson's founder, asserted that the 9A1000 delivers comparable performance to the Radeon RX 550, an entry-level AMD graphics card from six years ago. The Radeon RX 550 provides around 1.2 TFLOPS of FP32 performance, so that's the projection for the 9A1000. Weiwu emphasized that the 9A1000 will also support scientific computing and AI acceleration. The statement somewhat hints at an implementation similar to Nvidia's Tensor cores. Without access to major foundries like TSMC, Samsung, or Intel Foundry Services, Loongson will likely have to turn to SMIC to produce the 9A1000.A product that offers performance from a six-year-old AMD graphics card doesn't sound like a big deal for most. But for China, it represents a step in the right direction. China isn't expecting GeForce RTX 4090-level performance. It just needs a working product that performs decently. In the case of the 9A1000, it could either turn out great with entry-level gaming performance or end up being a simple solution for display output that Loongson can pair with its upcoming 3A6000 processors, rumored to sport an IPC that rivals AMD's Zen 3. As ambitious as China is, you can't just cheat the process. It'll take years before a Chinese domestic graphics card can reach the GeForce RTX 4090 levels, especially now that U.S. sanctions are becoming more stringent as time passes. Chinese chipmakers, like Moore Threads, have proven that they can develop competing graphics cards if given enough time. Even then, the hardware is one thing, but the software that makes it work is another story. The MTT S80 PCIe 5.0 graphics card from Moore Threads initially trailed behind the GT 1030 in gaming performance. But a new driver released months later helped reduce the divide between the MTT S80 and the GeForce GTX 1650. The U.S. export restrictions to China have been and will continue to be a headache for China's push for domestic hardware. Biren and Moore Threads, two of the most prominent players, are already on the U.S. Entity list, forcing both developers to downsize. Rabat - Morocco has committed around MAD 20 billion (nearly $2 billion) for the rehabilitation of six football stadiums and the construction of a new one in preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and the 2030 World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The City of Tallinn is gearing up for some major sports-related investments in preparation for its year as European Capital of Sport in 2025. According to the city's budget proposal for next year, the largest investment in sports will be the renovation of Kadriorg Stadium. Tallinn Deputy Mayor Tiit Terik (Center) announced that €23.2 million has been allocated from the city's 2024 budget for projects related to sports and physical activity, along with €5.6 million for investments in the same sphere. A major Australian supermarket giant has vowed to commit to a promise made a decade ago which will see a common breakfast item vanish from shelves nationwide. In 2013, Woolworths announced it would phase out the sale of caged eggs across its stores by 2018, in line with a new partnership with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The collaboration also targeted the sale of chicken, with only RSPCA standard or an equivalent approved brand of the white meat permitted to be stocked on shelves. Woolies hoped the changes would promote sustainability and adapt to the current shopping trends at the time, with the move welcomed by animal activist communities. However, by the time 2018 rolled around, not all changes came into effect with the supermarket backflipping on its decision to stop stocking some brands of caged eggs. Rather, the only caged eggs taken off shelves were the supermarket’s homebrand eggs, with Woolworths-branded egg cartons being “100 per cent” cage-free from 2015. Five years on, Woolworths appears to have subtly recommitted to its caged egg promise with a spokesperson telling news.com.au the supermarket is working with suppliers to phase-out such eggs in the next two years. “We announced our plans to transition our entire egg range to cage-free back in 2013, and we’re working closely with our suppliers to gradually phase-out caged eggs from all the brands we sell by 2025,” they said. A specific timeline to achieve 100 per cent free-range egg sales has not been determined, with only caged-eggs being phased out opposed to barn-laid eggs. “The transition to cage-free is on track, with around half of our stores already offering a completely cage-free egg range,” the spokesperson said. In some cases, a handful of stores are ahead of schedule while others have had to delay the phase-out due to supplier requests. Congress passed the defunding measure as part of a $1.2 trillion spending package to avert a partial government shutdown. In addition to stripping funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, through March 2025, the bill includes the $3.8 billion the U.S. sends to Israel every year. The bill also contains a long-standing provision that would limit aid to the Palestinian Authority, which governs the occupied West Bank, if “the Palestinians initiate an International Criminal Court (ICC) judicially authorized investigation, or actively supports such an investigation, that subjects Israeli nationals to an investigation for alleged crimes against Palestinians.” After a late-night vote, the Senate sent the bill to President Joe Biden to sign it into law on Saturday.
