Don't like the new Adaptive Transparency feature in second-generation AirPods Pro? Here's how you can turn it off. AirPods Pro 2 features adaptive transparency mode - you can turn it off using your iPhone and iPad With the second-generation AirPods Pro, Apple introduced a new feature called Adaptive Transparency. It is like regular Transparency mode, except that it works a little harder to reduce loud noises around you. For example, if someone is doing construction, loud noises will be instantly lowered, such as hammer noises and so on. It's a fantastic feature if you want to stay aware of your surroundings but don't want to lose your hearing while doing so. However, some users might find the feature to be slightly distracting whenever the lowering of volume kicks in. It feels odd, to say the least. Thankfully, you can turn the feature off if you like. It's super easy to do if you're using the AirPods Pro 2 with an iPhone or iPad. But do keep in mind that this feature - Adaptive Transparency - is limited to the AirPods Pro second-generation for now due to the new H2 chip. We are quite sure that it will make its way to the AirPods Max whenever they are updated with the new chip. Tutorial Step 1. Assuming you are connected to your iPhone or iPad, launch the Settings app. Step 2. Right under Apple ID, you'll see your AirPods Pro settings entry. Tap on it to open. Step 3. Scroll down a little and find the Adaptive Transparency option. Step 4. Tap on it to disable. There's really nothing more you have to do. Once the option is disabled, your AirPods won't lower loud noises whenever they occur around you. If you want to turn the feature back on, just follow the above steps again and enable the Adaptive Transparency toggle switch in the very last step. Personally, I keep the feature turned on at all times. The feature especially helps when there's wind noise, and the AirPods Pro microphone picks it up with Transparency mode enabled. The adaptive feature makes sure it is toned down to a point where it is more tolerable. link: https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-turn-off-adaptive-transparency-in-airpods-pro-2/

AMD's recently announced Ryzen 7000 X3D Zen 4 3D V-Cache CPUs may not feature overclocking support just like their predecessors. AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs Don't Get Full Overclocking Support, Microsoft Working on Windows 11 Optimizations For Multi-CCD Chips In the Q&A with the press, AMD confirmed that their Ryzen 7000 X3D 3D V-Cache CPUs will benefit from more advanced tuning features such as PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) and Curve optimizer but it looks like manual frequency overclocking or any voltage adjustments are still out of question. RELATED STORY Hassan Mujtaba AMD AGESA 1.0.0.4 BIOS Firmware Rolled Out By MSI, Adds Ryzen 7000 Non-X & X3D CPU Support AMD is recommending users go with Curve Optimizer as it delivers the best balance of overall CPU performance but hard frequency overclocking is locked just like the previous generation Zen 3D V-Cache chips. According to the red team, the voltages have gotten more aggressive this time around, going up to 1.4V versus the 1.1V limit on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. The stacked L3 cache featured on the chip is very sensitive to high temperatures and additional voltage and it is possible that the chips can break if these are tweaked, hence there's a hard lock just like the previous gen. So AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs have to do with the limited voltage they have to benefit from PBO and Curve Optimizer. You can see the full specifications page for the 7950X3D missing the 'Unlocked for overclocking' & replaced with 'AMD Expo Memory overclocking technology': Last year, when AMD launched its Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU, ex-Head of Technical Marketing, Robert Hallock stated that they were quick in rolling out the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU in the gaming market so it is likely that given enough time to mature, AMD could have future generations of 3D V-Cache chips that support overclocking just like any other CPU. Now AMD has definitely improved upon its first-generation designs, offering more auto-tuning options and higher clock speeds to work with but for full manual overclocking, it looks like we will have to wait a bit more. There were also a few reports that the overclocking lock was bypassed by a few overclockers and we know for certain that a few motherboard vendors were working on a BIOS for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to enable overclock support but that didn't pan out and AMD hit hard with the restrictions which mean those plans had to go down the drain. AMD & Microsoft To Optimize Windows 11 For Hybrid Chiplet Architecture Designs In addition to that, Microsoft and AMD are also working to optimize the dual-CCD Ryzen 7000 X3D configurations within Windows 11. This is the first time that AMD is launching a CPU with two very different chiplets. One CCD will be configured with a 3D V-Cache (plus lower clocks) while the other will be configured with a standard Non-V-Cache die but run at faster clocks (up to 5.7 GHz). This is also the first time the boost clocks are rated just as high as the Non-3D parts but it remains to be seen how Windows 11 optimizes the workloads and usage across those CCDs as games will clearly benefit from the 3D V-Cache die while single-threaded workloads will benefit more from the other non-3D die. The optimizations will come through AMD's own chipset drivers which will select from a range of games that benefit from the increased V-Cache solution. This is a process that requires time to mature so it is likely that we will see improvements months into the launch of the Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs. link: https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-7000-x3d-cpus-dont-feature-overclocking-microsoft-to-deliver-optimizations-in-windows-11/

AMD's Radeon RX 7600M XT brings RDNA 3 into gaming laptops. Here's what we know. AMD has announced the first RDNA 3 GPUs for gaming laptops, and surprisingly it's the more entry-level GPUs of the generation that are out the gate first. The Radeon RX 7600M XT is the top chip announced at CES 2023. This fairly mid-range offering is said to have what it takes to compete with, if not outperform, Nvidia's mobile RTX 3060 6GB (which has more cores than the desktop RTX 3060). In a graph shown on stage during CEO Dr. Lisa Su's keynote(opens in new tab), which admittedly lacked any actual frame rate numbers, AMD bragged anything from 22%–31% gain over Nvidia's last-gen mobile GPU. To achieve that sort of performance, the RX 7600M XT will come with 32 RDNA 3 Compute Units (CUs). That's 2,048 stream processors, and likely means we're looking at the Navi 33 GPU in full here. This GPU will run at a Game Clock of 2,300MHz, which is the same as the one reported with the desktop RX 7900 XTX(opens in new tab), and it will consume around 120W of power. That's not too unusual for a laptop chip with it being the same power draw as the last-gen RX 6650M XT. The RX 7600M XT will offer 42.8 TFLOPs of half precision compute performance, which is a pretty large step-up compared to the 19.94 TFLOPs available with the RX 6650M XT. That's the RDNA 3 architecture working its magic—AMD's latest desktop GPUs also offer a fairly significant compute performance increase. Though there's more to game performance than just TFLOPs. Memory bandwidth helps a whole bunch, and the RX 7600M XT will be paired with 8GB of GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit bus. Running at 18Gbps, that makes for bandwidth of up to 288GB/s—just a little more than the RX 6650M XT's 256GB/s thanks to its faster memory clock. AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT 32 2,048 2,300MHz 32MB 8GB GDDR6 120W AMD Radeon RX 7600M 28 1,792 2,070MHz 32MB 8GB GDDR6 90W AMD Radeon RX 7700S 32 2,048 2,200MHz 32MB 8GB GDDR6 100W AMD Radeon RX 7600S 28 1,792 1,865MHz 32MB 8GB GDDR6 75W AMD's large on-board cache, known as Infinity Cache, helps out with the bandwidth demands of modern gaming, and you'll find 32MB of the stuff on the RX 7600M XT. That seems like a reasonable amount for what's likely to be a GPU paired with high-refresh 1080p and 1440p panels. The AMD Radeon RX 7600M has also been announced today, which is a touch slower than the XT and comes with four fewer CUs (compute units). Then there's the RX 7000S Series GPUs, including the RX 7700S and RX 7600S. Despite the slight name change, these match pretty closely to the RX 7600M XT and RX 7600M in specifications, but they're more power-savvy designs and thus run a little slower for it. All of the above GPUs are built using the RDNA 3 architecture and as such have access to the benefits it includes, such as the Radiance Display Engine, AI and ray tracing capabilities, and AV1 encoding support. Several OEMs are working on AMD Advantage Edition laptops incorporating AMD's new 7000-series GPUs in the first half of the 2023, so keep an eye out for those. That includes Alienware's M18 and M16 laptops, Asus's TUG Gaming A16, Emdoor's APX970 and AG958P, and IP3's ARN37A. Though it's worth mentioning that Nvidia also announced that its RTX 40-series is headed to gaming laptops(opens in new tab) at CES 2023. A full stack of Ada Lovelace-powered graphics cards are coming, right the way through from the RTX 4050 to the RTX 4090. The high-end chips will be available starting February 8, while the mid-range and entry-level GPUs will arrive later on February 22. link: https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-rdna-3-heads-to-gaming-laptops-with-cheaper-gpus-first-to-arrive/

Two days of voting are in the books, and the US House of Representatives isn't any closer to electing a Speaker. In fact, the chamber may be farther away. Kevin McCarthy, who has served as the party's House minority leader for four years, has 20 Republicans standing between him and the gavel - and they aren't budging. Matt Gaetz, one of those so-called "Never Kevins", described Mr McCarthy as a "desperate guy" and said his request was simple: "For him to drop out of the race." What Republican rebels opposing McCarthy want US House in disorder amid popcorn and palace intrigue Mr McCarthy, for his part, pushed for the House to adjourn until Thursday, guaranteeing a third day of voting. "I don't think a vote tonight will make a difference," he said, insisting that progress was being made. "But a vote in the future will." With that in mind, here are three ways that future vote could turn out: 1. Kevin McCarthy prevails The current strategy from Kevin McCarthy appears to be to fight a war of attrition. His supporters will keep placing his name in nomination until those in opposition get tired of voting against him. Doing the same thing but expecting different results may be the definition of madness, but it may also be their only option until they can figure out what the recalcitrant Republicans really want. If Mr McCarthy is able to craft some sort of deal, he would almost certainly have to offer more power and influence to his opponents, allowing them to declare victory. The challenge for him is that any further concessions - and CNN reports he has one more up his sleeve - will ultimately weaken his hold on power. It will also make it more likely that he could be unseated when the really tough fights - on things like the budget and raising the debt ceiling - take place later in the year. Mr McCarthy could also hope that Democrats tire of the fight and stop showing up for the speaker votes, lowering the margin necessary for Mr McCarthy to win a majority. At least so far, however, Democrats appear to be relishing the Republican chaos. And already, some Republicans - like Ken Buck of Colorado - are hinting that Mr McCarthy should step aside for an alternative candidate, like his deputy, Steve Scalise of Louisiana. 2. Kevin McCarthy gives up Surrender has to be considered a possible, even likely, outcome for Mr McCarthy after two days of failure. At some point, the rank-and-file Republicans who are currently supporting Mr McCarthy may decide the best move is to give the hardline Republicans their scalp and try to move on. And if even a few of them break ranks, the floodgates could open. "We're starting to get some open conflict on the floor as well as behind closed doors," Mr Buck, who has voted for Mr McCarthy all six times, said on Wednesday afternoon. "We have to choose a speaker and move forward." If not McCarthy for US House Speaker, who else? Rebels reject Trump's call to back McCarthy Mr Scalise, the Republicans' chief vote-counter, is perhaps the choice best positioned to be a candidate acceptable to both the conservative hardliners and the rest of the House Republicans. He is considered a staunch, southern conservative and has literally bled for the party, having been seriously wounded in the 2017 attack on Republican members of Congress during a baseball practice. The biggest obstacle at the moment is that he doesn't seem to want the job. Other possibilities include firebrand congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana, the head of the conservative Republican Study Committee. Neither seems capable of unifying the entire party behind them, however. (Byron Donalds of Florida was the nominee of the anti-McCarthy Republicans three times on Wednesday, but the novice congressman has been more of a vessel for anti-McCarthy sentiment than a serious candidate.) 3. The two parties agree on compromise candidate Democrats and Republicans in the Ohio state House of Representatives joined together on Tuesday to reject a more conservative speaker and elect a moderate compromise candidate. Could such a thing happen in the US House of Representatives, as well? There's been plenty of such speculation, as Mr McCarthy's predicament became clearer in recent days. Some of that has been fanned by his supporters as a warning for conservative hard-liners to fall in line, but some of it is real. Don Bacon, a centrist Republican from Nebraska, has previously expressed an openness to working with Democrats to elect a compromise speaker if Mr McCarthy fails. Fred Upton, a former Republican congressman from Michigan with moderate credentials, has expressed an openness to presenting himself as a coalition pick (there is no requirement that a speaker has to be a current member of Congress). And there's been some talk of sweeteners for Democrats, like rule changes that would allow them to introduce legislation or more committee power. All of this would require a sizeable number of Democrats to go along with the plan, which in today's sharply divided partisan environment seems unlikely in the extreme. And any Republican who works with Democrats will instantly be persona non grata among most conservatives. Given that the House is already in uncharted territory by modern standards, however, no options are too far-fetched at this point. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64170729

A fossil skull from a toothy early relative of today's birds shows a weirdly modern skull configuration, raising new questions about the early evolution of birds. The earliest birds on Earth may have been more modern-looking than scientists expected — a discovery that raises new questions about a murky period in evolutionary history. The first birds diverged from two-legged theropod dinosaurs around 165 million to 150 million years ago, during the Jurassic period, according to a 2015 paper in the journal Current Biology(opens in new tab). They coexisted with dinosaurs during the Cretaceous. After the mass extinction that wiped out the nonavian dinosaurs about 66 million years ago, birds took off, evolutionarily speaking (they were already adept at flight). But a more detailed understanding of this process is elusive, in part because there are barely any bird fossils from the Cretaceous. This was a crucial period of bird history, because the dino-killing asteroid also wiped out many ancient lineages of birds, leaving only the survivors to give rise to modern birds. That leaves a lot of questions about what the first birds looked like before this great winnowing. "This event was really pivotal in terms of bird evolutionary history, because it dictated which lineages of bird-like animals were winners and losers," Daniel Field(opens in new tab), a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Cambridge in the U.K., told Live Science. Enter a new discovery by Field and his colleagues: Janavis finalidens, a vulture-size, toothed bird that isn't directly related to any modern birds but was a close relative of modern bird ancestors in the final days of the dinosaurs. This newly described species surprised Field and his team because of a quirk of its skull: The bird's palate (what would be the roof of the mouth in humans) is unfused, giving the animal a mobile upper beak, like that of a modern duck. This was surprising, because scientists had thought the most primitive birds had fused palates and rigid upper beaks, much like today's emus and ostriches. Related: How did birds survive the dinosaur-killing asteroid? The new finding, published Nov. 30 in the journal Nature(opens in new tab), suggests an alternative hypothesis: that the earliest birds looked "modern" and the "primitive" beak of emus and ostriches may have evolved later. "It's an interesting new piece of information that definitely complicates the picture," said Jingmai O'Connor(opens in new tab), associate curator of fossil reptiles at Chicago's Field Museum. "But what it says, we really can't yet say," said O'Connor, who studies the dinosaur-bird transition but was not involved in the new research. A single bone To understand why the bird that Field refers to as Janavis is weird, you have to know a little about bird-science history. Back in the mid-1800s, British biologist Thomas Huxley (famous for being "Darwin's bulldog" due to his advocacy of evolutionary theory), working with what he had, split all birds into two ancestral groups: the "ancient jaws," or paleognaths, which had rigid, ostrich-like palates; and the "modern jaws," or neognaths, which had mobile, duck-like palates. A mobile palate gives rise to a mobile beak, so scientists assumed that the unfused "modern jawed" birds were an evolutionary advance over their more primitive "ancient jawed" ancestors. With a mobile beak, birds are better at grooming, feeding, nest building and other tasks requiring dexterity. Unfortunately, that neat story of evolutionary improvement doesn't seem to hold up. In the 1990s, paleontologists discovered a softball-size hunk of rock containing fossilized Cretaceous bird bones in a quarry in Belgium. For decades, no one could make much sense of the specimen. But using computed tomography (CT) scanning to look inside the fossil nondestructively, Field and his team eventually realized that the fossil contained something exciting: skull bones. In particular, a bone that had been previously identified as a bird shoulder bone was actually part of the palate. That single bone revealed that Janavis, which lived 66.7 million years ago, had a "modern" palate. "What this finding suggests is that the early ancestors of both modern neognaths ["modern jaws"] as well as modern paleognaths ["ancient jaws"] probably had a mobile palate," Field said. Mixed-up lineages It's possible, then, that all birds started out with what scientists have been calling "modern jaws," with some lineages only later picking up the "primitive" configuration. But that isn't the only possibility, O'Connor told Live Science. Right now, researchers consider "modern jawed" and "ancient jawed" birds to be part of the same overarching group. But there is a "heretical idea," she said, that perhaps the "ancient jawed" birds evolved separately from a different long-tailed ancestor than the "modern jawed" birds. In that case, the last shared common ancestor of the two groups might be much further back in time than scientists thought. In light of the new findings, it may be worth re-examining some of the first post-asteroid bird fossils to get a better grip on their skull anatomy, O'Connor said. More fossil evidence from the Cretaceous would be helpful, too, she said. Field and his team plan to go deeper into the study of Janavis. "We're going to continue taking a very close look at the anatomy of Janavis in order to shed a little bit more light on what its biology was truly like," Field said. "Answering that type of question may help us understand in better detail why these premodern bird lineages went completely extinct with the asteroid strike." link: https://www.livescience.com/early-bird-evolution-skulls

Not only can the i Vision Dee change colors and make faces, but its windshield also acts as a screen—think virtual reality without the headset. The BMW i Vision Dee is a color-changing concept car revealed today as part of CES 2023. Inside, the i Vision Dee's entire windshield can act as a screen, offering different levels of augmented reality. While most of the car is conceptual, BMW said some features will start arriving in 2025. The BMW i Vision Dee concept debuting at CES 2023 bears little resemblance to anything in the automaker's current lineup. That's by design, as the small sedan's simplistic styling aims not to distract from the myriad digital and virtual elements that make it so innovative. From body panels that change colors to an interior where the entire windshield acts as a display, the i Vision Dee concept previews the road ahead for BMW's future technology offerings. A Chameleon-Like Concept Car The i Vision Dee isn't the first BMW that can change colors. At CES last year, the company revealed the iX Flow, which was wrapped in a material used by e-readers. It's called E Ink. Unlike the iX Flow, though, the i Vision Dee can shift beyond shades of gray. In fact, BMW says the chameleon-like sedan offers up to 32 different colors with essentially endless possibilities for different patterns, each of which can be controlled on the car's 240 individual E Ink panels. If the i Vision Dee's color-changing abilities weren't interesting enough, the car can also make faces on its digital interpretation of BMW's kidney grill. This lets it make expressions of astonishment, visual approval, and more. It reminds us of characters from the Pixar franchise Cars, but we'll leave it for others to decide whether it's cute like Lightning McQueen or creepy like Mater. Along with a new take on its trademark grille shape, the concept incorporates a version of the Hofmeister kink, albeit with a digital twist. While the i Vision Dee's appearance is otherwise pretty plain when it's not wearing a crazy color, BMW says the sedan was inspired by the 2002 model that was so iconic, and we can see hints of it in the sedan's proportions. When people approach the concept, it's designed to display an image of the driver's avatar on the side window. That sounds silly to us, but it's part of a greater plan to make the car more personalizable. The doors will even automatically open and greet you when the car senses that the driver is approaching. See Inside Dee Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience, which BMW says is its new philosophy for the development of future models. It's about forming a closer connection between people and machines. With Dee—as BMW likes to call its concept—this is accomplished through visual elements and verbal communication such as voice commands. The i Vision Dee's interior is virtually void of physical switchgear, which is meant to put an emphasis on using voice commands and keeping your eyes on the road. Sure, there's a steering wheel with vertical spokes and dual touchpads, but BMW focuses most of the attention on the windshield, which acts as an enormous digital display. All the information that would normally be shown on a traditional gauge cluster or center touchscreen is now projected onto the entire width of the front glass. Essentially, the i Vision Dee's windshield is a huge head-up display. However, there's more to it than that. The amount and type of content that appears can be chosen by the driver through touch-sensitive controls on the dashboard. BMW calls it the Mixed Reality Slider. It includes five different levels that include analog, driving information, and more. The more immersive levels venture into augmented reality, with the top setting dimming all the windows and transforming the interior into a fully digital environment. Think of it like virtual reality, but without the clunky headset. Coming to Cars in 2025 While it's obviously important to remember that the i Vision Dee is merely a concept car, BMW says some features will become available on production models as early as 2025. For example, that's when customers can expect to see the first production version of a head-up display that runs the entire width of the windshield (just don't expect anything near the concept's full virtual mode). I never know what to buy my wife for her birthday, but the year I gave her a week on Hamilton Island will be hard to top My wife is a remarkable woman: shrewd, funny, loving, delightfully tolerant of my inability to stack a dishwasher or close a cupboard door. She is also a nightmare to buy for. It’s not so much a question of what to get the woman who has everything, but what to get the woman who is completely content with a library book and a cup of tea. Birthdays and Christmas mean dread, and a wish she could be just a little less immune to the siren song of late capitalism. But five years ago, with a milestone looming, I nailed it: a week on a tropical island, lounging on the beach with our three-year-old, fulfilling a long-held ambition to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Perfect present, perfect holiday. The clue that perhaps it wasn’t was arriving to glorious sunshine, a brilliant blue sky, and an information sheet cheerily titled: “Explanation Of Situation With Regard To Potential Cyclone”. This was alarming. But as the handout explained, the island had been built with cyclones in mind, and it might still miss us altogether. Leaving never really occurred to us; the biggest worry was our reef trip would be cancelled. We did, however, lay in some bottled water and canned food, surprised that no one else was stocking up. Clearly, we said, we were the overreacting types. Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning The next day, travel to and from the island was suspended. Trundling past the supermarket in our golf cart, the main form of transport on the island, we witnessed, had we known it, a preview of the great pandemic pasta panic. But still, Debbie (we knew the cyclone’s name now) wasn’t due for two days, and we went to the beach, swam in the pool and visited the koalas. Most people did the same. If the mood wasn’t relaxed, there was no panic. On the lawn outside our building a toddler played in the rain, splashing in huge warm puddles. The afternoon before the storm hit we went to the highest point on the island to watch the darkness gather in the east. The wind was already as strong as any I’d felt. We retreated indoors, wondering what the next 24 hours would bring. Our apartment block appeared to have been designed with a nuclear blast in mind, built from slabs of concrete and the thickest glass this side of a presidential limo, but the noise when the full force hit at midnight was still astonishing. A cyclone is loud on every frequency all at once, and it feels unpleasantly alive. In the middle of one, it’s easy to believe in nature as a malevolent force; a cyclone sounds like it means to do you harm. It was the soundtrack for the next day, as we sat nervously and watched things, sometimes quite sizeable things, fly past the window. Our son, happily, was unmoved by it all. He napped and played as if it were any other day, even when the wind started to wrench apart a window; fortunately it lost interest after a bit and the outside stayed outside. It wasn’t until we emerged into a shattered landscape that we realised how lucky we’d been. No one died on the island, but many buildings had fared much worse than ours. One family we talked to had their front door torn off and spent 24 hours in a bathroom with three petrified children. Another apartment block had a section of roof peeled off like a sticking plaster. We spent the next few days keeping out of the way of the clean-up crews, looking for phone reception and sadly inspecting the chunks of coral washed up on the beach – the closest we would come to the reef. Some people were in shock, others were angry, and everyone wanted to go home. And the resort management had shut down the bottle shop, which was almost certainly the right call, but it didn’t help the vibe. Six days after arriving, we spent a tense morning at the airport, wondering if we’d get on to an evacuation flight, and if so where it might land, before making it on to a plane back to Melbourne. It hadn’t been a great holiday, but it had answered one of the eternal questions. What do you get for the woman who has everything? A cyclone. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jan/06/my-bad-trip-i-gave-my-wife-a-tropical-island-holiday-complete-with-cyclone

"This is the toughest operation I've ever seen. The enemy has thrown its strongest assault at Bakhmut. We haven't seen troops like this before," the Ukrainian commander tells us. Commander Skala, as he wants to be called, is controlling the Ukrainian operation to defend the city of Bakhmut in the eastern Donbas region from an underground chamber off a nondescript street. It is one of the main command centres the Ukrainian military has set up in the city, and few journalists have been here. A tall, hefty man with sparkling eyes, he watches a live feed from a drone hovering outside the eastern edge of the city on a big screen in the centre of the room. One of the battalion's units is trying to spot the location of Russian positions, to aid another unit which has just gone out to defend eastern approaches to Bakhmut under attack. In addition to Russian armed forces, mercenaries from the private paramilitary Wagner group have been sent in their thousands to front lines around Bakhmut. "Wagner soldiers openly advance under fire towards us even if they're littering the land with their bodies, even if out of 60 people in their platoon only 20 are left. It's very difficult to hold against such an invasion. We weren't prepared for that, and we're learning now," Commander Skala says. "Some weeks ago, we lost positions on the eastern approaches to the city because the enemy was constantly storming us with assaults. We moved to secondary front lines to save our soldiers," he adds. "We are trying to work smartly and get those positions back. Sometimes you have to withdraw to attack the enemy properly." Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has said Ukrainians have turned every house in Bakhmut into a fortress, and that there were now "500 lines of defence". Russia has been using all its might to try to take Bakhmut - a battle considered critical for the country after it lost ground in Ukraine in recent months, being pushed out of Kherson in the south and the Kharkiv region in the north-east. Capturing Bakhmut is also important to further Russia's aim to control the whole of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Throughout our conversation with Commander Skala, muffled explosions can be heard from above ground. The second you step outside, the sound is loud enough to make your heart pound - the terrifying whistle of shells flying in followed by the deafening boom of the impact. And the sound never stops as the bombs keep falling. One resident described it as "the end of the world" and there are moments when it feels like that. Bombs have ripped through the middle of apartment blocks, blown away the facades of buildings and created craters by the side of streets. It was hard to find a window in Bakhmut that was intact. The ground is littered with broken glass and debris. This was once a quiet, ordinary town in the east, known for its sparkling wine. Now, it's become a byword for war and Ukraine's resistance. It lies at a vital road intersection, but over the months, the battle here has gained a symbolic importance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently called it the "fortress of our morale". link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64153581

China is gradually resuming international travel after nearly three years of COVID-19 restrictions. Rabat - The Chinese government on Thursday announced reopening its border with Hong Kong on January 8, ending nearly three years of COVID-19 restrictions and allowing Hong Kong residents to travel to the mainland without having to quarantine, news outlet Reuters reported. As China prepares to fully resume international travel and reopen to the world, an increasing number of countries have imposed travel restrictions on visitors coming from the East Asian country, with others placing a complete ban on them, including Morocco. While EU countries have failed to establish a coordinated consensus on the current COVID-19 situation, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Belgium have placed COVID restrictions on travelers coming from China, varying in degrees. For instance, Italy, which was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, has required travelers coming from China to undergo testing upon arrival and those infected with the virus had to quarantine. Meanwhile, the US and the UK require mandatory COVID-19 tests on travelers coming from China starting from January 5. Morocco, however, took a harsher stance and introduced a complete ban on travelers coming from the East Asian country. “All travelers arriving from China, regardless of their nationalities, will be banned from entering Morocco starting January 3,” indicated Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other countries that have imposed travel restrictions include Australia, India, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Israel, and the Philippines. The collective decision to place restrictions on China reflects a rise in COVID-19 cases in the Asian country, coupled with Beijing’s unwillingness to share real-time data. However, China criticized the move and considered it to be “discriminatory” against Chinese travelers and warned others to take “countermeasures.” China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the decision to place restrictions on its travelers “lacks scientific basis and some practices are unacceptable.” The World Health Organization (WHO) has echoed global concerns and urged China to adopt a data transparency approach and share real-time information on the epidemiological situation in the country. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/01/353382/china-resumes-international-travel-despite-global-restrictions-on-its-travelers
