  2. A postal worker in India has been suspended after he was found not to have delivered thousands of letters for more than 10 years. Ever wondered why you never heard back from that job offer, that ATM card application or never got mail from someone you really wanted to hear from? Well, if you're in the Odhanga village in India's Orissa state, there's a good chance that letter was in fact sent. It was just never delivered, piling up with countless other undelivered mail. The stash of old letters and packages was discovered by chance when a group of school children played in the recently abandoned post office after the branch had moved to a new location. Playing in the yard, they noticed large bags with letters sticking out, local media report. When they looked inside and discovered ATM cards and bank passbooks, they alerted their parents and soon the authorities were on the case. According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, it's thought there are some 6,000 letters and packages with the oldest dating back as far as 2004.

  5. More than 21,000 people have been evacuated from the path of a fast-moving wildfire in Southern California. The mandatory evacuation orders were issued as the blaze, dubbed the Holy fire, threatened homes around Lake Elsinore in Orange County. The fire, one of several across the state, has destroyed more than 19,000 acres of forest north of San Diego. Meanwhile, a man suspected of starting the Holy fire has appeared in court accused of arson. Forrest Clark made several outbursts during the hearing in Orange County, at times refusing to show his face, local media reported. His case was adjourned until 17 August and bail set at $1m (£783,000), at which point Mr Clark interjected: "I can handle a million (dollars) right now, easily."

  9. Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has warned that the country has become a "land of drought" as he announced further measures to help stricken farmers. The new package will provide an extra A$140m ($104m; £80m) in payments to farmers and for mental health support. It brings the total amount of government funding to $576m. Although it is still winter, parts of eastern Australia are experiencing the worst drought in living memory. Ninety-nine percent of New South Wales, which is the country's most populous state and provides around a quarter of the country's agricultural output, is currently in drought.
  10. North Korea continuing nuclear programme - UN report North Korea has not stopped its nuclear and missile programmes, violating UN sanctions, a report commissioned by the UN Security Council says. It also says Pyongyang has resorted to a "massive increase" of illegal ship-to-ship transfers of oil products and has been trying to sell weapons abroad. The confidential report by a panel of independent experts was submitted to the UN Security Council on Friday. North Korea has so far not commented on the document's findings. Last week, US officials said Pyongyang appeared to be building new ballistic missiles despite recent warming ties with US President Donald Trump's administration and pledges to denuclearise.

  16. Worker at migrant children detention centre arrested for abuse A worker at an Arizona detention centre for migrant children has been arrested after a teenage girl told police her roommate was abused by him. Police say the victim is a 14-year-old girl who was being housed at the centre for undocumented child migrants. The facility, run by Texas-based non-profit Southwest Key, declined to say whether the girl had been separated from her family at the border. First Lady Melania Trump visited the child detention facility last June.

  18. Swedish crown jewels: Speedboat thieves steal priceless treasures Police in Sweden have launched a manhunt after thieves swiped some of the country's crown jewels from a cathedral and escaped by speedboat. Two priceless crowns and an orb belonging to a 17th Century king and queen were taken at around midday on Tuesday in Strängnäs, near Stockholm. Witnesses said they saw two men running from the cathedral, which was open to the public and hosting a lunch fair. They were seen motoring off into Lake Malaren, and have not been seen since. Police have launched a huge search operation, but currently have no suspects. "It's 1-0 to them right now," police spokesperson Thomas Agnevik told Swedish media. "It is not possible to put an economic value on this, it is invaluable items of national interest."
  19. Cambodia election: Ruling party claims landslide in vote with no main opposition The party of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power since 1985, says it has won a landslide victory in a general election that lacked any serious challengers. The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) said it had won all 125 seats in parliament with 77.5% of the vote. Critics have called the vote a sham as the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), which narrowly lost the last election, has been dissolved. The US said the poll was "flawed". "We are profoundly disappointed in the government's choice to disenfranchise millions of voters, who are rightly proud of their country's development over the past 25 years," a statement from the White House said. The US will consider placing visa restrictions on more government officials, it added. The EU has said it is considering economic sanctions.
  20. Israeli Arab MP resigns over controversial 'nation state' law An Israeli Arab politician has resigned in opposition to a controversial new law which declares Israel to be the nation state of the Jewish people. Zouheir Bahloul, 67, branded parliament "racist" and "destructive" for passing the law, which also revokes the status of Arabic as an official language. "[The law] removes the Arab po[CENSORED]tion from the path of equality in Israel," he told Israeli TV network Reshet.
