2. The Rumpless Game is squawky and, as its name suggests, lacks a tail, while the Burmese Bantam, has fantastically flared leg feathers and a head like a feather duster. But the true value of rare chicken breeds, according to a team of scientists working to save them from obsolescence, is not their decorative crests and plumage, but the diversity they bring to the chicken gene pool. In a radical plan to preserve rare varieties such as the Nankin, Scots Dumpy and Sicilian Buttercup, scientists at the the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute have bred genetically modified chickens designed to act as surrogates that would be capable of laying eggs from any rare breed. Speaking to journalists at the AAAS conference in Boston, Mike McGrew, who is leading the project, said: “These chickens are a first step in saving and protecting rare poultry breeds from loss.” The surrogacy technique, which places a new, mind-bending twist on the classic chicken or egg question, involves first genetically engineering hens to be sterile. This is done by deleting a gene, called DDX4, that is required for the development of primordial follicles (the precursors to eggs) meaning that the surrogate hens will never lay eggs that are biologically their own. A batch of sterile GM chicks hatched at the Roslin Institute in 2016, becoming the first genetically modified birds created in Europe. “We produced a hen that doesn’t have any eggs,” said McGrew, who is first author on a paper on the work published this week in the journal Development. The next step will be to transplant follicles from rare birds into the surrogate (this is done before the surrogate chick is hatched from its own egg), meaning it would go on to lay eggs belonging to entirely different breeds of chicken. Given that the hens would also need to be artificially inseminated with sperm from the same rare variety, the approach may appear unnecessarily convoluted. Why not just breed the rare birds the normal way? The scientists’ ultimate goal is to create a gene bank of chicken breeds preserved for posterity, and since primordial follicles can be frozen efficiently, while eggs cannot, the surrogacy technique serves an essential work-around. The Roslin team has set up the Frozen Aviary, a £14m project aimed at preserving a wide variety of poultry breeds. “We’re interested in chicken because that is the animal which is the most consumed animal on the planet and we want to protect all the different breeds of chickens that we have,” said McGrew. “So we can freeze down all the breeds of chicken.” McGrew predicts that the surrogates will be able to lay eggs from any breed, including chicken’s wild predecessor, the red junglefowl, but he is doubtful about whether it will work efficiently across species – it is not likely that the surrogate hens will be giving birth to eagle chicks, for instance. Richard Broad, a field officer for the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, said the idea was appealing: “You can save all kinds of breeds, put them in a freezer and there would be a genetic ark for us.” “If you had one in every country it would be a wonderful thing. In terms of usefulness, we couldn’t wish for anything better – it would be unbelievably useful.” Broad agreed that rare chickens could be a source of valuable genetic variation, potentially carrying variants that would provide resistance against new forms of avian flu. “It’s not what we’re protecting in the breeds that’s important, it’s what those breeds represent in their genes,” he said. The Frozen Aviary, which would allow scientists to rapidly expand po[CENSORED]tions that contained a protective gene for a new disease, bring breeds back to life after they had been declared extinct and provide an insurance against commercial breeds, which have been honed for their fast-growing, being wiped out by a disease. The avian biobank currently has genetic material from 25 different breeds and more than 500 samples from individual birds, all stored in liquid nitrogen cryostats. “They should be good – as long as the power doesn’t go out – for decades,” said McGrew. At present, the team is focused on chicken breeds, but expects the technique to work to preserve rare varieties of ducks, geese and quail. Previously, scientists in Dubai used a similar technique in male birds to create a houbara (a large bustard) fathered by a cockerel. In the future, it may also be possible to use the technique to conserve endangered species such as golden eagles – although this would depend on a suitable surrogate being identified. “The question remains open on how evolutionarily related they have to be for them to transplant them,” said McGrew. “You need a bird that can be bred in captivity and produce a lot of eggs.” https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/feb/17/sterile-genetically-modified-chickens-protect-rare-breeds-scientists-say
  3. Hughton was accosted at the team hotel as Ghana returned from the match but the angry fan was intercepted by security officials. Hughton was also subjected to a volley of a verbal abuse, the Ghana team media liaison Henry Asante told Reuters. "The fan approached the coach to express his disappointment at the outcome of the game and told the coach to improve or leave the job," Asante said. "It was a verbal confrontation. There was no physical contact. Later he was taken away by the security." It was a second successive defeat by an underrated opponent after Ghana lost in November in the World Cup qualifiers to the Comoros Islands. "We are incredibly, hugely disappointed with the result. We came into the game with a game plan," Hughton told a press conference. "We changed the way of playing, the system a bit so that we could start on the front foot. "We thought the team that were put out was certainly a more offensive team. This was our intention. "I think it rocked us, the [first] goal that we conceded but I thought we got back into the game." Man City treble-winner Ederson is named as FIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper for his stellar 2023. He beats Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois and Yassine Bounou - Morocco's goalkeeper - to the award. England's Mary Earps is unsurprisingly named as the top women's goalkeeper after also taking that spot in the team of 2023. She beat Spain's Cata Coll and Australia's Mackenzie Arnold to be named FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper. "I talk a lot about how it wasn't the easiest journey here, I took the scenic route. But looking back now, it all makes sense," she said. "It made me so much more prepared for the challenges I face to today, and not to take a day for granted. "If you are struggling, keep going. It is never too late to be who you are. "2023 showed we can change the world if we speak out against injustice, so let's keep doing that." https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/11095/12507208/football-latest-news-and-gossip-column
  4. It was perhaps the least surprising victory in the history of the Iowa caucuses. Donald Trump won by a landslide in the first contest in the Republican race for a presidential nominee, the margin in the end as comfortable as the polls had predicted for months. But dominating the vote count was just one reason why the former president was celebrating on Monday night after his supporters braved extreme cold weather to deliver him the win. Neither of Mr Trump's main rivals, Nikki Haley nor Ron DeSantis, emerged as a lead challenger - so the not-Trump vote remains divided. Meanwhile, his most ideologically similar rival, Vivek Ramaswamy, announced he was dropping out - and will endorse Mr Trump in New Hampshire on Tuesday. Here is a closer look at why the results in Iowa were so significant in the race for the White House. Mr Trump's victory in Iowa was historically massive. He won "bigly", as the former president might say. No one had prevailed in an Iowa contest by more than 12 points before - Mr Trump's margin will approach 30% and he could end up winning an outright majority of the Republicans who turned out. A survey of Iowans entering caucus sites on Monday night helps explain exactly why his bid for an electoral encore has been successful so far. About half of Republican caucus-goers consider themselves part of Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner. Live updates and analysiss Mr Trump's victory was a broad one as well. He won the young and old, men and women. He also won over the evangelical and hard-right conservative voters he had difficulty winning in 2016. Typically, defeated presidential candidates fade from memory, never able to shake the taint of the loss. Mr Trump, however, has managed to convince Republicans - here in Iowa and nationally - that he didn't lose. A large majority of caucus-goers in Iowa told CBS they believed Mr Trump was the actual winner of the 2020 presidential election - a number that increased to 90% among Trump supporters. Mr Trump's dominant position within the Republican Party has been irrefutable - but his win here, in the larger context of modern American politics, is extraordinary. Two years, 22 months and 25 days ago, he ended his first presidential term under a cloud of controversy, his campaign to challenge his loss to Democrat Joe Biden culminating in the January 6 Capitol riot. He faces two criminal trials stemming from those actions. Now, as the winner of the Iowa caucuses, he has taken the first significant step toward becoming the Republican Party's nominee in November's presidential election. Trump still has work to do to become the Republican standard-bearer. He will face a more formidable challenge from Ms Haley in New Hampshire next week, where polls show his once dominating lead has been whittled to near single digits. But he is still the overwhelming favourite in the race, endorsed in his first test by actual Republican voters, despite all the drama - legal and political - around his campaign. Entering Monday's Iowa caucuses, most of the electoral intrigue involved which candidate would take second place behind Mr Trump. In the end, it was Mr DeSantis who walked away with the runner-up prize. It's not much of achievement, however, given the narrowness with which the Florida governor finished ahead of Ms Haley. The result, and Mr DeSantis's pledge to press on with his campaign, won't provide the kind of clear result that would set up a one-on-one face-off with Trump in the days ahead. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-67989443

  14. Sometimes your computer may actually turn on, but an error message during the Power On Self Test (POST) will stop the boot process. Other times, your PC may simply freeze during the POST with no error at all. Maybe all you see is your computer maker's logo. There are a number of BIOS error messages that can display on your monitor and several reasons why a PC might freeze during the POST, so it's important to step through a logical process like the one I've created below. How to Fix Stopping, Freezing, and Reboot Issues During the POST Walk through these steps in order to address the most likely and easier-to-solve tips first. Troubleshoot the cause of the BIOS error message you see on the monitor. These errors during the POST are usually very specific, so if you've been fortunate enough to receive one, your best course of action is to troubleshoot to the specific error you see. If you don't fix the problem by working through the specific error during the POST, you can always return here and continue with the troubleshooting below. Walk through these steps in order to address the most likely and easier-to-solve tips first. If your PC is, in fact, booting through the POST, or is not reaching the POST at all, see our How to Fix a Computer That Won't Turn On guide for more applicable troubleshooting information. Disconnect any USB storage devices and remove any discs in any optical drives. If your computer is trying to boot from a location that doesn't actually have bootable data on it, your computer could freeze somewhere during the POST. If this works, be sure to change the boot order in BIOS, making sure that your preferred boot device, probably the internal hard drive, is listed before USB or other sources. Clear the CMOS. Clearing the BIOS memory on your motherboard will reset the BIOS settings to their factory default levels. A misconfigured BIOS is a common cause of a computer locking up during the POST. If clearing the CMOS does fix your problem, make any future settings changes in BIOS one at a time so if the problem returns, you'll know which change caused your issue. Test your power supply. Just because your computer initially turns on doesn't mean that the power supply is working. The PSU is the cause of startup problems more than any other piece of hardware in a computer. It very well could be the cause of your problems during the POST. Replace your power supply immediately if your tests show a problem with it. Don't skip this step thinking that your problem can't be with the power supply because your computer is receiving power. Power supplies can, and often do, partially work, and one that isn't fully functional must be replaced. Reseat everything inside your computer. This will reestablish cables, cards, and other connections. Reseat the CPU only if you think it may have come loose or might not have been properly installed. I separated out this task because the chance of a CPU coming loose is slim, and because reseating one could actually create a problem if you're not careful. There's no reason to worry as long as you appreciate how sensitive a CPU and its socket/slot on the motherboard is. If you've built your own PC or made hardware changes, triple check every hardware configuration. Check every jumper and DIP switch, verify that the CPU, memory, and video card you're using is compatible with your motherboard, etc. Rebuild your PC from scratch if necessary. Don't assume that your motherboard supports certain hardware. Check your motherboard's manual to verify that the hardware you've purchased will work properly. Check for causes of electrical shorts inside your computer. This could be the cause of the problem if your computer freezes during the POST, especially if it does so without a BIOS error message. Important Computer Repair Safety Tips Start your PC with essential hardware only. The purpose here is to remove as much hardware as possible while still maintaining your computer's ability to power on. If your computer starts normally with only essential hardware installed, proceed to Step 10. If it still isn't displaying anything on your monitor, proceed to Step 11. Starting your PC with its minimum necessary hardware is very easy to do, takes no special tools, and could provide you with valuable information. This isn't a step to skip if, after all the steps above, your computer is still freezing during the POST. Reinstall each piece of hardware that you removed earlier, one piece at a time, testing your PC after each installation. Since your computer powered on with only the essential hardware installed, those parts must be working properly. This means that one of the hardware components you removed is causing your computer to not turn on properly. By installing each device back into your computer and testing each time, you'll eventually find the hardware that caused your problem. Replace the non-functioning hardware once you've identified it. Test your computer's hardware using a Power On Self Test card. If it's still freezing during the POST with nothing but essential hardware installed, a POST card will help identify which piece of remaining hardware is causing your computer to stop booting. If you don't already own or are unwilling to buy a POST card, skip to the next step. Replace each piece of essential hardware in your PC with an identical or equivalent spare piece of hardware (that you know is working), one component at a time, to determine which piece is causing your computer to stop during the POST. Test after each hardware replacement to determine which component is faulty. The average computer owner doesn't have a set of working spare computer parts at home or work. If you don't either, my advice is to revisit Step 11. A POST card is very inexpensive and is, in general, a smarter approach than stocking spare computer parts. Finally, if all else fails, you'll probably need to find professional help from a computer repair service or from your computer manufacturer's technical support. If you don't have a POST card or spare parts to swap in and out, you're left not knowing which piece of your essential computer hardware is not working. In these cases, you'll have to rely on the help of individuals or companies that do have these tools and resources. https://www.lifewire.com/fix-stopping-freezing-and-reboot-issues-during-the-post-2624441

  16. The AMC Hornet supplanted the long-serving Rambler at the start of the 1970s. The Sportabout was the wagon version, which offered a dose of extra practicality. This example, however, also adds a measure of Italian design-house chic with its Gucci decor package, a rare option. It's up for auction until Wednesday, January 17. Plucky little American Motors Corporation never had the R&D money of the big three domestic automakers, so it was forced to be innovative. One avenue it explored was fashion-themed cars, such as the Pierre Cardin Javelin and the Levi's Gremlin. For its thrifty compact Hornet, there was a tie-up with one of the most noble Italian design houses, the pride of Florence: Gucci. This 1973 Hornet Sportabout wagon is a result of that mashup, andit's up for auction on Bring a Trailer—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos. The Hornet was AMC's mainstay, and but just because it was a workaday model didn't mean it had to be boring. This one wasn't, with its V-8 engine (originally a 304-cubic-inch, since replaced with a 360), white body-side stripes, and slotted mag wheels. The good stuff, however, is on the inside, which features Gucci's tri-color perforated vinyl seats and double-G headliner. Back in 1973, this option package would have tacked on nearly $150 to a car that stickered at $2500. Gucci had made its name selling scarves and bags to the likes of Grace Kelly and other swells, and while it's doubtful the Princess of Monaco ever cruised the corniches above the Côte d'Azur in a Sportabout, the unlikeliness of the mashup is part of the charm here. The green paint shows well, though there are a few cosmetic issues, the most serious being holes in the plastic filler panel between the rear bumper and body. This would take a bit of fiddly work to repair but is certainly doable, and it sounds like there might be a spare out there that'll fit. The current owner has replaced the battery, alternator, voltage regulator, rear main seal, oil-pan gasket, timing cover gasket, and dipstick tube. This car was previously sold on Bring a Trailer for $22,000, which is far beyond what a standard Hornet might bring. We'll see whether buyers this time are as willing to open their wallets (Gucci or otherwise).
  18. Speciation, where one species diverges into two, is a well-known concept in the theory of evolution. But a new study based on almost 20 years of research has revealed that “speciation reversal”, the merging of two previously distinct lineages, may also play an important role. Scientists have discovered that two lineages of common raven that spent between one and two million years evolving separately appear to be in the process of such a consolidation. The findings raise intriguing questions about how science should define species – and whether the boundaries are as clearcut as once thought. We’re committed to keeping our quality reporting open. 19. Novak Djokovic survived a huge first-round scare against teenage qualifier Dino Prizmic at the Australian Open. History-chasing Djokovic, bidding for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam, found himself a break down in the third set before going on to win 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 in Melbourne. The world No 1, looking for his 11th title Down Under, had to battle for just over four hours before winning through against the 18-year-old world No 178. It was the longest opening match of a Grand Slam he has played as the Serb survived a significant test in his quest to overtake Margaret Court and stand alone at the top of the sport. "I started off well for a 36-year-old," said Djokovic. "Wow, when you think about it… I am double his age! Sponsored Links Recommended byWhat is Outbrai "I struggled in many different moments tonight. He was very physical. I had good moments. Some moments I could have played better. It's been a very short off-season but hopefully I will be at my best for the next match." The signs did not look good for Prizmic when he dropped his opening service game and then took a medical time-out in the fifth game for treatment to his left groin. He already had tape on his right arm and could find nothing to hurt Djokovic in the first set, but things began to change early in the second. Djokovic won a staggering 17 of his 19 tie-breaks at grand slams in 2023, including 15 in a row from the second round in Melbourne to the Wimbledon final, but here he played a very poor one and suddenly what had seemed a straightforward occasion became anything but. Djokovic, who was dabbing his brow and puffing his cheeks, was making a lot of uncharacteristic errors and Prizmic fought back from 2-0 down in the third set to lead by a break at 3-2. There was concern on the face Djokovic's coach Goran Ivanisevic, who was among the spectators watching his countryman Prizmic's run to the French Open junior title last year. Djokovic ultimately found a way through, but the 36-year-old's rivals will have been watching closely. "He deserved every applause, every credit that he got tonight," said Djokovic of his opponent. "Amazing player, I must say. Very mature for his age. This was his moment. It could easily have been his match, as well. He made me really run for my money tonight." Matteo Berrettini pulled out of the tournament without playing a match as his injury woes continued. The former Wimbledon finalist had been due to face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round on Rod Laver Arena on Monday in one of the plum ties of the first round. But on Sunday afternoon the tournament announced he had withdrawn with a right foot injury, making it the fourth time in the last eight Grand Slam tournaments where he has not been able to play a match. The po[CENSORED]r Italian, a semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2022, has been off the tour since suffering an ankle injury during his second-round match against Arthur Rinderknech at the US Open. He had previously missed the French Open because of an abdominal injury, while in 2022 he also sat out Roland Garros following hand surgery and then tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of Wimbledon. Once ranked as high as world No 6, the 27-year-old, beaten by Djokovic in the Wimbledon final in 2021, is now down at 125. He has been replaced in the draw by Belgian lucky loser Zizou Bergs, who will take on Tsitsipas on Monday. Fourth seed Jannik Sinner, one of the favourites for the title following his stellar end to 2023, began his campaign with a straight-sets win over Botic Van De Zandschulp. Sinner, who beat Djokovic twice in a matter of days at the ATP Finals and Davis Cup in November, was a 6-4 7-5 6-3 winner on Rod Laver Arena. The Italian did not play a warm-up tournament after his late finish to last season, and he said: "I feel like I started off actually really well for the first match. "Then after, I had some moments where I made a couple of wrong choices, but this can happen. Even if you made maybe some matches, this can happen. Maybe you are a little bit tired sometimes. "It was important today for me because I was looking forward to stepping on the court." American 12th seed Taylor Fritz survived a first-round test from Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta to win 4-6 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-4 in a four hour thriller. The 26-year-old avoided an early exit, having bowed out in the second round last year. https://www.skysports.com/tennis/news/31870/13047982/australian-open-novak-djokovic-battles-past-teenage-qualifier-dino-prizmic-in-melbourne
  20. China has accused the US of sending "a gravely wrong signal" to those pushing for Taiwan's independence after Saturday's election result. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent Taiwanese president-elect William Lai a message of congratulations following the result. Beijing called the message aviolation of Washington's commitment to maintain only unofficial ties with Taiwan. Mr Lai has vowed to protect Taiwan from an increasingly aggressive China. But Beijing sees Taiwan as its territory and fiercely challenges any government that says otherwise. Messages of congratulations for Taiwan's new leader poured in from all over the world after the election, including from Mr Blinken - who emphasised the partnership between Taipei and Washington, which he said was rooted in democratic values. "We look forward to working with Dr Lai and Taiwan's leaders of all parties to advance our shared interests and values," he said in a statement. Mr Blinken also stressed that the US, one of Taiwan's biggest allies, is "committed to maintaining cross-strait peace and stability". The top US diplomat was also quick to say that such collaboration should "further our longstanding unofficial relationship" and be "consistent with the US One China policy". Under the policy, the US recognises and has formal ties with China rather than the island of Taiwan, which China sees as a breakaway province to be unified with the mainland one day. Mr Blinken's remarks drew sharp criticism from Beijing, which views any statement of support for Taiwan as lending legitimacy to a candidate and political party it sees as a gang of separatists hoping to turn Taiwan into an independent sovereign nation. In a statement, China's foreign ministry said Mr Blinken's congratulations violated the US's promise to maintain "only cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations" with Taiwan. It stressed that the Taiwan question is "the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations" and said it had lodged a formal diplomatic complaint. "China firmly opposes the US having any form of official interaction with Taiwan and interfering in Taiwan affairs in any way or under any pretext." Beijing's statement will likely serve as a warning to Washington after it sent an unofficial delegation of former US officials to hold talks with leading political figures in Taiwan just hours after the self-ruled island elected Mr Lai. Deployed by US President Joe Biden, who himself welcomed the election results, the delegation includes a former US national security adviser and a former deputy secretary of state. Other Western countries, including the UK, France and Germany, congratulated the new leader. Beijing's Communist government reviles Mr Lai's pro-sovereignty Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has governed Taiwan for eight years. That is because China sees any statement of support towards the DPP as lending legitimacy to politicians, which Beijing sees as a gang of separatists hoping to turn Taiwan into an independent sovereign nation. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-67974541
