  4. Motorola has once again teased the elusive Moto X50 Ultra, which could bring multiple new generative artificial intelligence (AI) features compared to the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. The company first mentioned the smartphone in February in a Weibo post. Recently, the AI smartphone was again teased in a video where the brand also mentioned the F1 Grand Prix event China hosted on Sunday. The post led to the belief that the smartphone might be unveiled during or after the event. But that wasn't the case. Some reports have suggested that the Moto X50 Ultra could be launched in May. The company teased the smartphone in two different Weibo posts (via GSMArena) on April 20. In the first post, an image of the smartphone next to a poster for the F1 Grand Prix event was shared. Notably, Lenovo, the parent company of Motorola, is one of the sponsors of the event. In the post, the brand said (translated via Google), “Feel the speed and passion with #motoX50 Ultra AI mobile phone #motoAI coming soon.” Motorola also posted another video post showing the smartphone from different angles and a snapshot of the Grand Prix event with the caption “shot on #motoX50 Ultra AI”. Based on the design, the handset looks identical to the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, which was launched globally last week. It was also showcased in a wood back panel option, which is also available for the Edge 50 Ultra. Despite the similar design, it is possible that the X50 Ultra could have some internal changes. Further, Motorola is teasing the smartphone as an “AI phone”, the first for the brand. The company has shipped its Edge 50 Ultra handset with some generative AI features such as a wallpaper generator and used AI to make camera adjustments. However, the phone was not marketed as an AI smartphone. This has led to the belief that the Moto X50 Ultra might bring more AI features and accompanying hardware.Launched globally last week, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra features a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,220 x 2,712 pixels) pOLED display with 144Hz refresh rate and 2,500 nits of peak brightness. Under the hood, it is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 onboard storage. It sports a triple rear camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 64-megapixel telephoto shooter. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/moto-x50-ultra-design-teaser-generative-ai-features-5504176#pfrom=topstory

  6. The underbelly of New York City's tabloid media industry was laid bare in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday. A famous publisher outlined a secret plan he had with Donald Trump and his personal lawyer Michael Cohen, calling it an "agreement among friends". Prosecutors questioned former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker for nearly three hours. He testified that the three worked to suppress negative stories about the candidate during his 2016 campaign. "'This could be a very big story, so I believe that it should be removed from the market'," Mr Pecker said he would advise the former president about killing certain articles. Mr Pecker's testimony could prove critical for prosecutors as they seek to prove that Mr Trump tried to influence the election by quelling a story of an alleged affair. Mr Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. Prosecutors allege he tried to cover up a $130,000 (£104,500) payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before he won the race for the White House back in 2016. Continuing his testimony from Monday as the trial's first witness, Mr Pecker said he met Mr Trump in the late 1980s and eventually became good friends with the former president. The two had a mutually "beneficial" relationship, in which Mr Trump would share exclusive information with him, such as news about the contestants on his reality TV show, The Apprentice. This helped boost viewership for the show and the National Enquirer, Mr Pecker said. Shortly after Mr Trump launched his first presidential bid, Mr Pecker said he met with Cohen and Mr Trump in August 2015. There, Mr Pecker said he agreed to suppress negative articles about the former president and promote positive stories about him, a plan Mr Pecker argued should be kept "as quiet as possible". The tabloid publisher said he also agreed to notify Mr Trump about stories concerning his romantic affairs, as he was "an eligible bachelor" who "dated the most beautiful women", according to Mr Pecker. Mr Pecker detailed two stories that the three men worked to kill. One was from Dino Sajudin, a former Trump Tower doorman, who Mr Pecker said tried to sell an article in 2015 about an unsubstantiated rumour that Mr Trump once fathered a child out of wedlock. After investigating, Mr Pecker said, he found the claim to be "1,000% untrue". But he agreed with Cohen to pay Mr Sajudin $30,000 for perpetual rights to the story, because it would have been "very embarrassing for the campaign" if it got out, Mr Pecker said. Just before the end of the day in court, prosecutors also delved into a hush-money agreement made to Playboy model Karen McDougal. She claims she and Mr Trump had a long-term affair, though Mr Trump denies this. Mr Pecker said he advised the former president to buy Ms McDougal's story, but Mr Trump was unsure. "'Anytime you do anything like this, it always gets out'," Mr Pecker claimed Mr Trump told him. His company eventually purchased the story for $150,000. Though prosecutors did not bring charges over either of these payments, the testimony from Tuesday could help paint a picture of the context leading up to Ms Daniels' payment. Putting the tabloid publisher up on the stand first in the trial was a smart move, according to former Brooklyn prosecutor Julie Rendelman. "He provides the backdrop for how the whole 'catch and kill' scheme came to be, the players involved, and the timing as it related to Trump's campaign," she said. Mr Pecker's testimony came after the second day of the hush-money trial got off to a rocky start for the former president's legal team. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68880206
  7. Arsenal have asked the question in the most emphatic manner as Chelsea were swept aside with embarrassing ease. It is now up to Liverpool and Manchester City to provide the answer. If the Gunners shared the nagging doubts that resurfaced about their character – “bottle” to use the vernacular – after a short, recent slump, they were banished by a virtuoso performance that left Chelsea humiliated at an exuberant Emirates Stadium. Arsenal’s 5-0 win put them three points ahead of Liverpool and four ahead of Manchester City, not to mention delivering a plus-56 goal difference that pretty much provides the buffer of an extra point. They have played one more game than Liverpool and two more than City but scoreboard pressure counts at this point and Arsenal are ahead on that measure. Mikel Arteta’s side wobbled in the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa in their last home league game, the pressure, tension and anticipation of going into that match having just seen Liverpool lose against Crystal Palace at Anfield earlier seemingly overcoming them. And the subsequent timid Champions League quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich raised the spectre that Arsenal were about to “choke” in the manner that agonisingly consumed them at the final fences of last season’s Premier League race. The response, a battling win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday followed by this champagne show in front of their own celebrating fans, should put to bed any suggestions that it could be a lack of character that will undermine Arsenal in the run-in. And to make the night even better for Arteta, it was one of his summer signings that has been the subject of so much scrutiny who underlined his growing status as something of a talisman – a player bought from this humbled, dysfunctional Chelsea. Even in the first half here, Havertz’s languid style infuriated a small number of Arsenal fans, but not for long as by the end his name was echoing around amid the celebrations, the German even being serenaded loudly after the final whistle. His two goals either side of the hour snuffed out the unlikeliest of prospects, a Chelsea comeback, his second goal a thrilling high finish after one of those glorious passes Martin Odegaard produces with such wonderful regularity. The elegant Havertz is suddenly becoming something of a lucky charm for Arsenal. He has scored in 11 games this season and the Gunners have won them all. Arteta told BBC Sport: “His overall contribution in every phase of play was tremendous. When you add the two goals he scored and some of the link-up play that he had in big moments, it was a great performance.” Arsenal were never in serious danger of spoiling that record against a Chelsea side whose performance gave mediocrity a bad name. One young fan watching Mauricio Pochettino’s team subside brandished a banner reading: “I don’t want your shirt. I want you to fight for ours.” Safe to say he will have returned home sorely disappointed. It is a harsh word but in this case accurate. Chelsea’s second half display was gutless. For the hosts, it was an occasion free of the nerves that riddled them in the loss to Villa, a night when the party pieces could come out and confidence could be even further bolstered before the seismic north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cqvn39z4yddo
  8. The Little Mariana fruit bat slipped into oblivion before scientists even had the chance to learn about its biology or behaviour. Even the old people on the island said they hardly ever saw it. The Little Mariana fruit bat, Pteropus tokudae, had long been considered a rarity – the mysterious cousin of a larger bat species also found on the Pacific island of Guam. Like many fruit bats, the Little Mariana species had a small, fox-like face and a brown, furry body, giving rise to its alternative name, the Mariana – or Guam – flying fox. In the 1960s, during a survey that assessed dozens of bats hunted by local people, just one specimen of the Little Mariana fruit bat turned up. It was a female, shot at Tarague Cliff on Guam’s northern coast. She was lactating and so must have been nursing a young pup, which apparently had flown away after the shooting – almost certainly to die. The female was only the third Little Mariana fruit bat specimen to be examined by western scientists in recorded history. Previously, two males had been collected by a naturalist in the 1930s. These sparse records reveal that this bat was medium-sized, about 15cm (5.9 inches) long and with a wingspan of over half a metre. The Little Mariana fruit bat belongs to the "megabat" family – a grouping that contains some of the largest bats in the world. We know hardly anything about this fruit bat's biology – what food it favoured or when it bred, for example. Nor do we know how it interacted with that other, larger bat species on Guam, Pteropus mariannus. The Little Mariana fruit bat is about as obscure a species as you can get and last year the US Fish and Wildlife Service declared it officially extinct, following decades of zero sightings. "I would definitely recognise it," says Tammy Mildenstein, a bat researcher working with the US military, who says there is a tiny possibility that the Little Mariana fruit bat is still out there, hiding somewhere on Guam. She mentions the Philippine bare-backed fruit bat. There were no sightings of that species between the 1960s and 1990s, so it was declared extinct. But it was rediscovered in 2000. Guam is a much smaller place, however, than Negros Island in the Philippines, where most Philippine bare-backed fruit bats live. And Guam has been subject to plenty of bat surveys in recent years – including by Mildenstein. The truth is that, if the Little Mariana fruit bat really were still out there, it probably would have turned up by now, says Tigga Kingston at Texas Tech University. One question that lingers is whether the Little Mariana fruit bat actually originated on another island. Perhaps a group of these bats were blown over to Guam during a great storm, suggests Mildenstein – this would potentially explain their rarity on the island. It’s a "great tragedy" that we have lost this species, says Kingston, for it probably played an important role in plant pollination or seed dispersal, she explains. You might also like: The American swamp bird that disappeared The rewilding project bringing back an ancient breed of cattle to Portugal The rhino that became a conservation icon The one thing we can do is learn from its fragile existence. "It’s like the canary [in the coal mine] bat in terms of what can happen to these species," says Kingston, who co-authored a paper on fruit bats last year. Many other species in the same grouping, the Large Old World Fruit Bats (LOWFBs), as they are known, are also facing extinction. And the threats really stack up for bats in this group that live on small islands exposed to tropical cyclones, as these storms are exacerbated by climate change. Habitat loss, hunting pressures and the effects of extreme weather can all become sharply influential on isolated island bat po[CENSORED]tions. Often, there is nowhere for affected species to escape. "Being on an island can subject you to extreme, rare events," says Kingston Of the 75 large old world fruit bats still around, the majority (71%) are considered threatened, she adds. Unless their fortunes improve, more extinctions within this group could unfold in the coming years. Mildenstein hopes that won't happen. She and colleagues are working to study the larger Guam bat, the Mariana fruit bat, which is endangered and happens to be the only native mammal left on the island. These bats are occasionally hunted but attitudes among the locals have gradually changed, she says: "There's still a bit of poaching here and there but I think the community’s largely on board. People are respecting that bats need their roosting space undisturbed." Sadly, it is too late for the lost Little Mariana fruit bat. A tantalising species that will be forever shrouded in mystery. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240422-the-megabat-thats-gone-forever

  10. Subaru announced that the Legacy sedan will be removed from its lineup following the 2025 model year. The company cited a market that is shifting towards crossovers and SUVs as the reason for the Legacy's death. Sales of the Legacy have been on the decline, with just 25,510 units finding homes last year. Get ready to bid farewell to yet another sedan. Subaru announced today that the Legacy mid-size sedan will be discontinued following the 2025 model year. The current generation, the Legacy's seventh, arrived for 2020 and was given a refresh for the 2023 model year with sharper front end styling. While sales were up by 13 percent year over year in 2023 to 25,510 units, they were down by 13 percent through March of this year and are a long way off from the 65,000 units sold in 2016. The Legacy first appeared in 1989, designed specifically for the American market and the first Subaru to be built in the United States when the automaker opened its plant in Lafayette, Indiana. The Legacy was sold as both a sedan and a wagon in the U.S. until the fifth generation, which debuted for 2010. The Legacy had spawned a lifted Outback trim in the mid-1990s that became its own model in 2010, replacing the Legacy wagon as the sole longroof in Subaru's lineup. Subaru says that more than 1.3 million Legacy vehicles have been sold in the United States, and before it goes away, the sedan represented the longest-running Subaru model line. Subaru says that the Legacy's death "reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers and Subaru’s transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles." While it theoretically could be replaced by an EV, we wouldn't bet on it, with Subaru seemingly focused on crossovers for the foreseeable future. The 2025 Legacy will reach dealerships this spring, starting at $26,040. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60581468/2025-subaru-legacy-dead/
  11. The US Senate has approved a $95bn (£76bn) foreign aid package that includes military support for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the legislation into law on Wednesday. The Senate on Tuesday evening backed the measure passed by the US House of Representatives on Saturday. It includes $61bn in military aid for Ukraine, which the Pentagon says can start being delivered to the war-torn nation "within days". It passed in a bipartisan vote of 79-18. Mr Biden hailed its passage in a statement late on Tuesday, calling it "critical legislation [that] will make our nation and world more secure as we support our friends who are defending themselves against terrorists like Hamas and tyrants like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin". Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: "After more than six months of hard work and many twists and turns in the road, America sends a message to the entire world: we will not turn our back on you." The Senate had passed a similar aid package in February, but a group of conservatives who oppose new Ukraine support had prevented it from coming to a vote in the House of Representatives. Last week, Democrats and Republicans in the lower chamber joined together to bypass this opposition. They ultimately agreed to a package bill that included the foreign aid as well as legislation to confiscate Russian assets held by Western banks; new sanctions on Russia, Iran and China; and a provision that will force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell the po[CENSORED]r social media service TikTok. The package is expected to provide a significant boost to Ukraine's forces, which have suffered from a shortage of ammunition and air defence systems in recent months. Reacting to the vote, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it "reinforces America's role as a beacon of democracy and leader of the free world". On Tuesday, Ukraine's second city, Kharkiv, faced the latest in a series of recent drone and missile strikes, with authorities saying two people in a residential neighbourhood were injured. The commander of Ukraine's National Guard, Oleksandr Pivnenko, said he was expecting an attempt by Russian forces to advance on the city near the two countries' border. In the House on Saturday, a majority of Republicans in the chamber voted against the foreign aid package. The bill also faced resistance among a handful of Senate Republicans who opposed any new aid to Ukraine. Fifteen voted with two Democrats - as well as independent Senator Bernie Sanders who objected to providing new offensive weapons to Israel - against the bill. "Pouring more money into Ukraine's coffers will only prolong the conflict and lead to more loss of life," Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville said in remarks on Tuesday. "No one at the White House, the Pentagon, or the state department can articulate what victory looks like in this fight." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68885868
