  2. Far-right parties are on the rise in much of Europe, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni senses a big moment. “We are on the eve of a decisive election,” the Brothers of Italy leader tells a packed hall in Madrid by video link. Marine Le Pen of France’s National Rally is in the front row, alongside Santiago Abascal, who heads Spain’s Vox party. “We are the engine of our continent’s renaissance,” the Italian prime minister declares, before rousing her audience to a standing ovation. The far right has won elections in Italy and the Netherlands, leads the polls in France, Austria and Belgium and has a stake in the governments of Finland and Slovakia. Now they could secure more than three in every 10 votes when the EU’s 27 states vote in European elections from 6-9 June, and become a powerful force in the European Parliament. Infighting is threatening to take the gloss off the far-right surge - because of a series of scandals surrounding Germany’s AfD. That is why the AfD’s allies in the EU have thrown the German party out of their far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) group in the European Parliament. They want nothing to do with a party whose top candidate, Maximilian Krah, has revealed embarrassing views about Adolf Hitler’s Waffen-SS and whose number two faces accusations of taking money from Vladimir Putin’s Russia - allegations he denies. That kind of association is the last thing Marine Le Pen needs. She has fought for years to detoxify her party from the extreme views of her father, who founded National Rally’s predecessor and was convicted of trivialising the Holocaust. Her party now stands at around 30% in the polls and she is favourite to become France’s next president in 2027. The far right’s biggest success story in Europe, Giorgia Meloni, has big hopes too. Her ambition is to create a right-wing force that will take charge in Brussels. “They will have many more people [in Parliament] and these people will be mainstreamed or normalised by their presence,” says Sabine Volk, a close observer of the far right at the University of Passau in Germany. If Ms Meloni’s EU grouping, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), does well in the elections there is a chance they could find common ground with the centre right of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Ms von der Leyen’s European People’s Party is likely to end up as the biggest group and she has left the door open to an alliance with the ECR as long as they are pro-Europe, pro-Ukraine and in favour of rule of law. The ECR includes not only Brothers of Italy, but also Poland’s right-wing populist opposition party, Law and Justice, Spain’s Vox, Riikka Purra’s Finns Party - part of the Finnish government - and Jimmy Akesson’s Sweden Democrats, who work with the Swedish government without being in it. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgllgxlg5dgo
  3. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport will be revealed on May 31 ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race. VW says the updated Clubsport will be the most powerful front-wheel-drive Golf; specs are pending, but it should exceed its predecessor's 296 hp. Along with more power, the new Clubsport has a restyled front end, a new taillight design, and a new drive mode designed for lapping the 'Ring. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport will officially break cover on May 31 ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race. Considering Volkswagen has downsized the North American Golf lineup rather than grown it in recent years, we're pretty confident this is another Clubsport we won't get. A Mighty FWD GTI The last Clubsport launched for 2021 as a 45th birthday celebration of the GTI. The new one's launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Golf. Volkswagen confirmed that the new Clubsport will be the most powerful front-wheel-drive Golf, though the company neglected to offer any specifics beyond that. Currently, the 2024 GTI that's sold in the U.S. pumps out 241 horsepower. However, the 2025 model is getting a slew of updates. The European-spec also sees output increase to 262 horses, and the Golf R boasts 315 horsepower but features an exclusive all-wheel-drive system. Meanwhile, the 2021 Clubsport sat closer to the R on the power spectrum, churning out 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque from its 2.0-liter turbo four. We would expect the updated Club to meet or exceed the former figure. The new Clubsport will also wear a different face than the standard GTI. The new version adds restyled headlights and an illuminated VW logo at the front. A set of redesigned taillights mark changes at the rear, and it rides on a fresh set of standard 19-inch wheels. Plus, lightweight forged 19-inch Warmenau wheels are also available. While we technically haven't seen the updated Clubsport without camouflaged wrappings, the available photos don't leave much to the imagination. A special drive mode designed for lapping the Nürburgring's Nordschleife is yet another one of the Clubsport's exclusive features. A fitting addition considering where the car is launching. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60886552/2025-golf-gti-clubsport-confirmed/
  5. Llamas and alpacas have been used by humans for transportation and fleece production for a few thousand years. Both species are primarily found in Peru and Bolivia and are part of the camel family, Camelidae. Alpacas and llamas are two of the four lamoid species—the other two species, vicuña and guanaco, are their wild cousins. Interestingly, all four species are able to interbreed and create fertile offspring. While often conflated, alpacas and llamas differ in key ways. The most-distinguishing physical differences between alpacas and llamas are their size, their hair, and their face shapes. Also, they differ in disposition, which affects the way humans have used them over the years. The most-noticeable difference between the two animals is their sizes. Alpacas are smaller, around 90 cm (35 inches) high at the shoulder and between 55 and 65 kg (121 to 143 pounds). Llamas are the biggest lamoid at about 120 cm (47 inches) at the shoulder and about 113 kg (250 pounds). So llamas are going to be a lot bigger than their cousins. Their faces are also dissimilar: alpacas have small, blunt faces with short ears, while llamas have more-elongated faces with banana-sized ears. Another key difference is their hair. Alpacas have shaggy hair that is used for fleece production. Their hair color can vary greatly, from whites and light yellows to browns and blacks. Llamas’ hair is coarser, and their wool is considered inferior, but llama breeders are working to create a llama breed with finer, softer hair.Humans usually use llamas as pack animals, since they can carry a generous amount of weight. The average llama can carry a load of 45 to 60 kg (99 to 132 pounds) for up to 30 km (18.6 miles) each day. Yet llamas get a bad reputation, since, when overloaded or maltreated, they react by spitting, kicking, lying down, or refusing to move. Usually, however, they are gentle creatures. Alpacas, on the other hand, are a bit more timid and like to stay with their herd. Llamas can be used as guard animals for livestock like alpacas and sheep. https://www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-llamas-and-alpacas
  6. Kylian Mbappe ended his Paris St-Germain career with a French Cup final win over Lyon as Luis Enrique's side completed the domestic double. Ousmane Dembele headed in PSG's opener from Nuno Mendes' cross at Lille's Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Fabian Ruiz bundled in their second after his first effort was blocked on the line by Lyon's Irish defender Jake O'Brien. O'Brien, 23, headed in from Rayan Cherki's corner to give Lyon hope, his fifth goal since his move from Crystal Palace last summer. France forward Mbappe, 25, leaves as PSG's record goalscorer with 256 goals in 308 games following his 2017 move from Monaco. He is widely expected to join Real Madrid, ending their eight-year pursuit of the player. Mbappe won six Ligue 1 titles in his seven years at PSG, plus four French Cups and two League Cups. He only started two of PSG's final seven league games as Luis Enrique planned for life without him - but did start the cup final. There were violent clashes between fans about 100km away at the A1 motorway toll in Fresnes-les-Montauban as fans travelled to the game. Rival supporters fought at the toll and motorway service station, setting one bus on fire and damaging four more. At least eight police officials were injured in the clashes. "These are sporting events which should be about joy and sport, I condemn this violence with the greatest firmness," French President Emmanuel Macron, who was at the game, told BFM TV. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/cmmm74glp9nt
  7. The Day After might sound like the title of a film or a novel. But for diplomats and policymakers, the phrase has only one meaning and that is what happens 'the day after' the fighting stops in Gaza. Given the intensity of the conflict and the absence of hope, such thinking might seem surprising, even wishful. Yet there is an increasing focus on what could and should happen if and when the guns fall silent in Gaza. EU foreign ministers will discuss exactly this in Brussels on Monday when they hold talks with counterparts from Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, along with the secretary-general of the Arab League. Across the Middle East and among Western countries, conversations are taking place and plans are being drawn up. Many are aware the window of opportunity before the US election in November is closing. Lord Cameron said he had told the Israeli government: "You may not think the Palestinian Authority is ideal. You may think that it fails in many respects. But you need to find a partner that is not Hamas that you can work with in Gaza and the West Bank, and that partner should be the new technocratic government run by the Palestinian Authority." UK Treasury officials are understood to be preparing new forms of financial and technical support for the PA. But there are also some within government who are pushing for the UK to be more explicit about its own thoughts for how a Palestinian state would be created. "You can't support a two-state solution and not talk about recognition," one senior and well-placed source told me. "What we lack is a timeline. We agree the starting point: stop the war. And we agree on the creation of a Palestinian state. But there's no definition of an irreversible path towards it. We have got to get into that space, otherwise we will be dealing with this for the next 70 years." Then there are voices from within Israel. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has issued a passionate denunciation of Benjamin Netanyahu's refusal to set out a post-war plan. "The 'day after Hamas' will only be achieved with Palestinian entities taking control of Gaza, accompanied by international actors, establishing a governing alternative to Hamas rule," he said. Fellow war cabinet member Benny Gantz has gone a step further, threatening to resign from the government unless Mr Netanyahu agreed a six-point plan by 8 June. That included a demilitarised Gaza and the establishment of a joint US, European, Arab and Palestinian administration. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-69059863
