South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday in an extraordinary rebuke that came about after his own ruling party turned on him following his refusal to resign over his short-lived martial law attempt. It is the second time in less than a decade that a South Korean leader has faced impeachment proceedings in office and means Yoon is suspended from exercising his powers until the decision is finally adjudicated by the country’s Constitutional Court. Following the vote, which sparked jubilation among protesters outside parliament, Yoon conceded that he will “stop temporarily for now, but the journey to the future that I’ve walked with the people for the past two years should not stop.” “I will not give up,” he said in a statement shared by the country’s presidential office. “With all the encouragement and support for me in mind, I will do my best until the last moment for the nation,” he added. The country’s Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who will serve as acting president under South Korean law, told reporters that he would “devote all my strength and effort to stable operation of state affairs.” Kang Sun-woo, a lawmaker with the Democratic Party, told CNN Saturday that the “great democracy of South Korea will survive and will be born again” after the impeachment. The dramatic decision marks the culmination of a stunning political showdown after Yoon briefly declared martial law on December 3 and sent soldiers to parliament, where lawmakers fought past troops to enter the building and vote down the decree. Yoon’s gamble backfired spectacularly, galvanizing many in the vibrant Asian democracy to call for his removal. Opposition parties tried impeaching him a week ago – but Yoon survived after members of his ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote, saying they hoped the president would voluntarily resign instead. Yoon then doubled down – giving a defiant speech on Thursday in which he defended his martial law decision, lambasted the opposition, claimed he was trying to save the country and vowed to “fight until the last moment with the people.” Yet moments before that speech, the leader of Yoon’s party withdrew his support for the president and backed impeachment as the “only way… to defend democracy”, instructing lawmakers to vote with their conscience. Thousands of protesters gathered in Seoul on Saturday, braving the cold to call for Yoon to resign ahead of the vote, which was passed by 204 lawmakers with 85 voting against it. “He surely tried to have a war against the citizens so this is just what he deserved,” one protestor, Lim Dong Eon, told CNN outside the National Assembly building after the vote, where protesting has now turned into partying. Another protestor kept their message short, telling CNN: “Democracy is back!” https://edition.cnn.com/2024/12/14/asia/south-korea-yoon-second-impeachment-hnk-intl/index.html

Mercedes-Benz has teased a new electric luxury van that will be revealed in spring 2025. Mercedes has already said the unnamed mid-size van will be sold in the United States. Based on the new modular VAN.EA platform, Mercedes says this will help the brand differentiate personal vans from commercial ones. Mercedes-Benz is developing a new generation of electric vans, including a luxury model that's coming to America. The German automaker today released a teaser photo of the new van, which should be more upscale than the now-defunct Metris and will debut in spring 2025. The new Mercedes vans will be based on the modular VAN.EA platform that the company detailed more than a year ago. Basically, it will be the foundation of all forthcoming personal and commercial vans, and it was designed to help better differentiate between the two use cases. Mercedes says VAN.EA is scalable, allowing multiple wheelbase lengths as well as various battery capacities. The EV vans will be available with front- or all-wheel drive. Circling back to the yet-to-be-named luxury van, Mercedes previously confirmed that it would make it to our shores when it revealed the new electrical architecture. While the company today shared very few other details about it, the mid-size van that's designed for personal use will offer different levels of appointments. Those will include everything from a fancy family hauler to a C-suite shuttle to a roomy limo that would make Burt Reynolds proud. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a63182844/mercedes-benz-new-electric-luxury-van-teaser/

Dayane Leite never wanted to become a sex worker but at the age of 17 her husband died of a heart attack and she couldn’t pay for the funeral. Her home town, Itaituba in Brazil’s northern Para state, is at the heart of the country’s illegal gold-mining trade, so a friend suggested raising the money by having sex with miners, deep in the Amazon. “Going to the mines is a roll of the dice,” she says. “The women are seriously humiliated there. They may be slapped in the face and yelled at. “I was sleeping in my bedroom and a guy jumped through the window and put a gun to my head. And if they pay, they want to own the women.” Dayane successfully gathered the money for the funeral, and at the age of 18 she had her first child. For the last 16 years, like many women in Itaituba, she has been returning periodically to the mines to work as a cook, a washerwoman, a barmaid and a sex worker. She now has a family of seven to support. “I'm not going to say that all the women in the city do it, but a fair share of them do sex work. So it’s kind of normal. We don’t really care,” says Natalia Cavalcante, who became a sex worker in a remote mining settlement at 24. Four years later, after marrying the owner of a bar, she became the madam of a brothel – a job she only gave up recently, to look after her nieces in the city. Life in mining villages in the rainforest is harsh - most consist of just a dirt track, saloon bars and a church. But the miners themselves live even further out, in shacks made of wood and canvas, surrounded by snakes and jaguars, and in total darkness once the generator is switched off. Women working as cooks have to live in these camps, alongside the men. The miners appear in the village whenever they have found gold and have money to spend, Natalia adds. Sometimes they have to be persuaded to have a shower before sex, women say. Running a brothel is illegal under Brazilian law, but Natalia says she took no commission, she just employed bar staff and rented out rooms. Young women would contact her asking for work, and she sometimes lent them money for the journey, a seven-hour drive from Itaituba. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c86wl5ex6gzo

The coyote (Canis latrans) is a species of canine native to North America. It fills much of the same ecological niche as the Golden jackal does in Eurasia. The coyote is larger and more predatory and was once referred to as the American jackal by a behavioral ecologist. The coyote is a prominent character in Native American folklore, mainly in Aridoamerica, usually depicted as a trickster that alternately assumes the form of an actual coyote or a man. The animal was especially respected in Mesoamerican cosmology as a symbol of military might.Coyotes are medium-sized dog-like animals with small feet, slender legs, a narrow pointed muzzle, and erect pointed ears. There are four toes on each foot, with claws, and a smaller fifth toe with a dewclaw, which does not come into contact with the ground. Its color is reddish, grayish, or yellowish-brown streaked with black, with paler underparts. There is a black patch at the tip and base of the tail, and on the front of the ankles. The upper parts of the feet, nape, muzzle, backs of the ears, and outer surfaces of the legs are reddish-brown or tan. https://animalia.bio/coyote?custom_list=16540

If you're wondering why this weekend's Manchester derby feels a bit, well, different, it's probably because there is so little jeopardy riding on the result. Sure, there is the possibility of Manchester City's slump of one win in 10 - unprecedented in the Pep Guardiola era - reaching new depths. Or the scale of yet another Manchester United rebuild under Ruben Amorim being further exposed by their neighbours. But there is little talk of title challenges, or of United finally 'being back'. Here are five discussion points teeing up Sunday's fixture. 1. How bad are things for both clubs? United have their lowest points total after 15 matches in the Premier League era. City's total is their lowest at this stage since 2010-11. Going into this weekend's fixtures, United were 13th and City were fourth. City have taken just four points from their past six Premier League games. No other team has taken fewer over that period - and only Southampton match that tally. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/czjdnx4dvr0o

A former Manchester City footballer has been appointed president by Georgia's disputed parliament, after 17 days of pro-EU protests that have swept this country's towns and cities. Mikheil Kavelashvili, now 53, is a former MP from the increasingly authoritarian ruling Georgian Dream party and was the only candidate for the job. On Saturday, 224 out of 225 members of Georgia's electoral college voted for him. The four main opposition groups have rejected Kavelashvili and have boycotted parliament, insisting that the elections held in October were rigged. Large crowds of protesters, facing freezing temperatures, gathered outside parliament from the early hours of Saturday morning ahead of the vote. Georgia's outgoing pro-Western president, Salome Zourabichvili, has condemned Kavelashvili's election as a travesty, insisting she holds Georgia's only remaining legitimate institution. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused Zourabichvili of trying to harm Georgia's interests, emphasising that when her term of office ends on 29 December, she will have to retire. "We have very strong state institutions, so we certainly have no difficulty in bringing the situation under full control," he was quoted as saying on Friday. Party colleague Nino Tsilosani told reporters that Zourabichvili was no longer president in the eyes of the public. Georgia is a parliamentary democracy with the president the head of state, and the prime minister the head of Parliament. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5ygejxej28o

There’s a brand new Pokemon mobile game in the works called Pokémon Trading Card Game Live, because yes, we just can’t get enough. The Pokemon Company has revealed a special teaser trailer that shows a bit of the gameplay for the upcoming card game, and it’ll apparently feature everything you know and love about the OG physical game but in digital format. Pokémon Trading Card Game Live invites players to experience a fresh take on the trading card game, using the same rules but sprinkled with a little bit of online playability. The multiplayer aspect here is undoubtedly the most appealing feature, as you can now battle against players from all over the world - something a physical card game can’t do. It also lets you do battle from the palm of your hand, or on your desktop if you fancy using the PC or Mac version. Customization options are a-plenty, giving players the ability to switch up their avatars as well as boost their experience with accessories and other cosmetics. It also seems like the physical card packs will tie into the digital game somehow, with codes players can redeem on the app for special perks. Trainers can participate in daily challenges, with exciting new decks to add to their collection. The game is launching with multi-language support as well (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese). There’s no word yet on the official release date for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live, but if you’re eager to stay updated on all the latest developments, you can visit the official website to know more, or have a look at the embedded teaser trailer above to get a feel of the gameplay. RuneScape has unveiled its latest boss dungeon with the Sanctum of Rebirth. Once standing as a sacred temple, the Sanctum was thought to be abandoned. However, it turns out it may be anything but. Now the stronghold of Amascut and her loyal followers, there are a great many bosses and enemies to take on in the Sanctum of Rebirth, available now! "What's a boss dungeon?" You may be asking. Well, a boss dungeon is pretty much what it says on the tin. Instead of facing off against hordes of enemies on your way to a final, powerful beasty, you'll instead be fighting back-to-back bosses, the Soul Devourers, through the Sanctum of Rebirth. The devs behind RuneScape have emphasised they want to make Sanctum of Rebirth as challenging, but accessible as possible. You'll be able to take on the dungeon either solo or as a team of up to four, with the rewards scaling to match your size. You only need to watch the latest developer blog video to get an idea of how complex Sanctum of Rebirth is under the hood. And for a game like RuneScape that's been going for more than a decade now, it's admirable how they've managed to keep its latest iteration, and the continual updates since, feeling fresh. You can take on the Soul Devourers of the Sanctum of Rebirth right now, and earn rewards like the Tier 95 Magic Weapons, a new God Book, The Scripture of Amascut, and the new Prayer: Divine Rage. But if RPGs simply aren't your thing, don't fret, because you can simply take a gander at our massive list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far) to find some amazing titles that we've handpicked to top our charts. https://www.pocketgamer.com/runescape-mobile/sanctum-of-rebirth/

Ubisoft recently, and after a long period of reluctance, decided to add Steam achievements to some of its Assassin's Creed games it had launched on Steam. This comes shortly after Ubisoft launched Assassin's Creed Mirage to Steam with achievements already baked-in. Now, Assassin's Creed Unity, Black Flag, Revelations, and Syndicate all join AC Mirage in the Steam Achievements family. Putting the cherry on top of the achievement pie, any achievements already earned while playing the Steam versions of these Assassin's Creed games will retroactively apply to your Steam account. The recently added Steam achievements are all pretty standard fare, with each game getting in the neighborhood of 50-60 achievements, except for AC Revelations, which only has 48 achievements. Where Ubisoft previously almost spitefully neglected its Steam audience, with many Assassin's Creed and other AAA games only coming to Steam long after their initial launch—largely without support for achievements and other advanced features—the game developer has seemingly realized the value of Steam as a platform. Not only has Ubisoft been on a Steam achievement-adding spree, it also recently revealed that, as of the launch of the upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows, it would be launching its games as day-one Steam releases. It's no secret that Ubisoft has been through some rough times of late, and this recent course-correction is likely a survival tactic while Ubisoft prepares for a potential Tencent buyout. https://www.techpowerup.com/329780/ubisoft-adds-steam-achievements-to-swathe-of-assassins-creed-games

iQOO 13 has launched in India today, bringing the brand's signature performance credentials at a competitive price. While iQOO 13 brings a host of upgrades over iQOO 12, as per the brand, it is more than a successor. The iQOO 13 is the first flagship smartphone from the brand that gets an ingress protection rating, and it is among the first in the country to sport Qualcomm's top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC. The list of upgrades is big, and to walk us through the product and give us in-depth insights, Gadgets 360 sat with iQOO CEO Nipun Marya ahead of the launch. iQOO 12 and beyond The iQOO 12 was an excellent product, and it won accolades in the industry, including the Best Gaming Smartphone title at our NDTV Gadgets 360 2024 awards. We wanted to understand what consumers should expect from the all-new smartphone from iQOO. Marya explained, "From iQOO, we will continue to do some things that we have been doing, and they will remain constant. And, of course, some things we will keep improving. When it comes to things we will not change - our DNA, which is hardcore performance. We want to stand true to what we say and believe that with iQOO 13, we are really taking the performance multiple levels higher. Things like the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Q2 chip, among others, are the first parts that should not change and are not changing with iQOO 13. Second is innovation and constant improvements. We want to be really close to our community and consumers. We love to get feedback from our community and consumers. We love to take feedback from them about what they feel is good about the product and what can be further improved." Briefly touching upon offline expansion, Marya said that the iQOO 13 launch would have more details and added that this was feedback the brand had received from its consumers for a long time. Gadgets 360 was the first to report that iQOO will finally foray into the offline market starting in December. iQOO phones will be available via Vivo-exclusive stores and other retail channels. [Sponsored] Samsung Galaxy S24: The Ultimate Camera Phone With Smarter On-Device AI During the conversation, Marya also confirmed that the iQOO community reached another benchmark of 2 million members. iQOO is among a handful of handset manufacturers with an active community. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/features/iqoo-ceo-nipun-marya-talks-about-iqoo-13-offline-expansion-ai-and-more-7160006#pfrom=indepth
