  2. Rabat – The remains of two Moroccan soldiers who participated in the Korean War in 1950-53 have been discovered buried in the UN cemetery in Busan, Korea, the Korean embassy in Rabat announced this week. At first glance, Korea and Morocco appear to have almost nothing in common, but a few months ago, the Korean embassy stressed in a post that historical archives had led them to believe that there were soldiers from Morocco who perished or were wounded during the Korean War. The embassy carried out an active search alongside the Diplomatic Foundation and the High Commission for Former Members of the Resistance and Liberation Army (HCARAMAL) to identify Moroccan veterans who participated in the Korean War as well as their descendants. In a photo exhibition held from December 9 to 24, they revealed the identity of two Moroccan veterans, Djian Julien and Mohamed Landri, second class soldiers who died on July 4, 1953 and July 18, 1952, respectively. According to records unearthed by the embassy, Djian Julian is of a Moroccan-Jewish origins while Landri is believed to be from the city of Fez. During the inauguration of the photo exhibition, Korean Ambassador to Morocco Keeyong Chung shed light on the forgotten chapters of the shared history between his country and Morocco, stressing, “With these findings we can officially say that Morocco took part in the [Korean] conflict.” In an interview with Morocco World News, the ambassador stressed that the remaining task is to first “commemorate them, thank them, although they are no longer with us but we would like to thank their family members if we can find them.” As the search is still ongoing, Ambassador Chung hopes to find more Moroccan soldiers through boosting exchanges between the veterans’ institutions of the two countries. “With this discovery we can make this a historic record,” he added. Blood Brothers Despite being geographically distant, Morocco and Korea found a shared history that testifies to the spirit of sacrifice, and voluntarism of Moroccans who defended values of peace, tolerance, and cohabitation, said Mustapha El-Ktiri, High Commissioner at the HCARAMAL. These institutions are carrying out a collective work of academic research on the shared history of people. Titled “Morocco-Korea: Blood Brothers,” the collective work aims to introduce the recent discovery to the rising generation by shedding light on what Moroccans have done to bring people together in moments of war. “This shared history is the basis of an exemplary, active and dynamic cooperation in the fields of Korea-Morocco shared interests,” El-Ktiri commented. Jean Christophe Bertrand, Secretary General of the Diplomatic Foundation highlighted that the academic work will allow the youth to grasp the shared and unforgotten history beyond what is largely known among young Moroccans such as Kpop, K-dramas and K-food. As next year marks the 60th anniversary of establishing Morocco-Korea diplomatic relations, the discovery of Moroccan veterans’ in the Korean War marks a watershed moment in their bilateral relations.
  3. Lightelligence, a Boston-based photonics company, revealed the world's first small form-factor, photonics-based computing device, meaning it uses light to perform compute operations. The company claims the unit is "hundreds of times faster than a typical computing unit, such as NVIDIA RTX 3080." 350 times faster, to be exact, but that only applies to certain types of applications. Still in a demo stage, the Photonic Arithmetic Computing Engine (PACE) integrates electronics and photonics in a singular chassis, performing operations at the speed of light and thus achieving extreme acceleration for certain AI, Deep Learning, and Machine Learning compute workloads. PACE accelerates certain matrix acceleration applications so much faster than NVIDIA's RTX 3080 because of the very nature of its computing elements. It's easy enough to understand: latency, which is the frame of time between when an event is ordered to happen and when it actually happens, is much, much lower on Lightelligence's system. That's the benefit of data traveling around at the speed of light. To achieve this, Lightelligence knew it would have to focus not only on the optical capabilities of the PACE but also on traditional semiconductors and software solutions linking the two. The company thus describes itself as a hardware and software provider; the company has also designed algorithms specifically designed to crack some of the most fundamental computing problems of today in a photonic environment. "One of Lightelligence's unique advantages over other companies developing optical computing is our ability to co-design many different domains together," said Erwan Di Vita, lead engineer for PACE at Lightelligence. "Our photonic engineers work alongside analog, digital, packaging, and software engineers to design the chips, which are then manufactured and built into 3D systems by our post-silicon teams. Without such innovations from our opto-electronic packaging team, none of this would be possible." The PACE is a somewhat narrow engine when it comes to what exact workloads it can execute. But, as the company says, "PACE efficiently searches for solutions to several of the hardest computational math problems, including the Ising problem, and the graph Max-Cut and Min-Cut problems, illustrating the real-world potential of integrated photonics in advanced computation." In that perspective, we can classify it as an ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) of sorts: it does very few things (or a single thing) very, very well. As Yichen Shen, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Lightelligence, put it, "These problems belong to an important class of intractable mathematical problems known as NP-complete which have stumped mathematicians for the last 50 years," he said. "Algorithms for NP-complete problems are important because these problems can be mapped to each other, and they have hundreds of practical applications in fields that include cryptography, power grid optimization and advanced image analysis. The progress we've made on NP-complete combinatorial optimization problems illustrates the potential of our technology to transform computing." However, the PACE achieves that coveted specialization through an added field of computing - which not only makes the system faster, it makes it incredibly more efficient. While traditional semiconductor systems have the issue of excess heat that results from running current through nanometre-level features at sometimes ludicrous frequencies, the photonic system processes its workloads with zero Ohmic heating — there's no heat produced from current resistance. Instead, it's all about light. Lightelligence is built around its CEO's Ph.d. thesis - and the legitimacy it provides. This is so because when "Deep Learning with Coherent Nanophotonic Circuits" was published in Nature in 2017, Lightelligence's CEO and founder Yichen Chen had already foreseen a path for optical circuits to be at the forefront of Machine Learning computing efforts. By 2020, the company had already received $100 million in funding and employed around 150 employees. A year later, Lightspeed has achieved a dem product that it says is "hundreds of times faster than a typical computing unit, such as NVIDIA RTX 3080". 350 times faster, to be clear. The PACE's debut aims to charm enough capital to comfortably reach its goal of launching a pilot AI accelerator product to the market in 2022. That's still only a stretch goal in the company's vision, however, its goal is to develop and distribute a mass-market, photonics-based hardware solution as early as 2023, targeting the Cloud AI, Finance, and Retail markets. Considering how Lightelligence managed to improve the company's 2019 COMET design performance by a factor of a million with PACE in a span of two years, it'll be interesting to see where their efforts take them when it comes to launching.
  4. Browser and VPN provider Mozilla has published the latest edition of the *Privacy Not Included shopping guide, to help people make better informed buying decisions ahead of Christmas. Based on roughly 1,000 hours of research into po[CENSORED]r internet-connected devices and their associated privacy policies, the guide offers a rundown of the “creepiest” gadgets on the market. At the top of Mozilla’s naughty list this year sit the Amazon Echo, Facebook Portal and NordicTrack Treadmill, each of which collect a large quantity of user data of various kinds, the company asserts. Naughty or nice? More specifically, Mozilla notes that the smart devices from Amazon and Facebook (which both feature Alexa) are configured to record all voice commands they receive, which are then relayed back to the vendor’s servers. They also collect a range of metadata that can be used for the purposes of targeted advertising. NordicTrack, meanwhile, reserves the right to sell user data, and contact users via SMS message or telephone, even if their number is on a “Do-Not-Call list”. The company may also receive data on users from various third parties, such as data brokers and aggregators. Also featured on the *Privacy Not Included list are products from Peloton, Samsung, Huawei, DJI, Roku and other major companies. Alternative Christmas gifts The objective of the guide, says Mozilla, is to arm shoppers with the necessary information to make informed buying decisions, but also to apply pressure on technology vendors to design products with user privacy front of mind. The company believes the burden has fallen on consumers to safeguard their own privacy for too long, and it’s time technology vendors were more transparent about the data they collect and how it is used. “While gadgets may be getting smarter, they are also getting creepier and way more prone to security lapses and data leaks - even among leading companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook,” said Jen Caltrider, lead researcher on *Privacy Not Included. “We also found that consumers continue to shoulder way too much of the responsibility to protect their own privacy and security. Consumers are asked to read complicated documents scattered across multiple websites to even begin to understand how their data is being used.” It’s not all doom and gloom, however. In addition to highlighting the gadgets it believes present the greatest risk to consumers, Mozilla has also published a list of 22 products that are unlikely to bring about an invasion of privacy. At the top of this list sit the Garmin Venu, Apple Homepod Mini and iRobot Roombas, all of which are manufactured by companies with a strong privacy track record and that do not sell user data to third parties.
  5. Rabat - The closing of borders with Ceuta and Melilla has revealed the extent of contraband smuggling, as Moroccan customs reveal a sudden MAD 4 billion ($429 million) increase in 2020. The remarkable upsurge in Moroccan customs revenues likely shows the vast quantity of goods normally flowing into Morocco untaxed due to the enclaves’ smuggling economy. Addressing a meeting of the National Business Council (CNE), Head of Morocco's Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII) Nabyl Lakhdar presented the results of a recent study that shows a “dramatic” increase in custom revenue. He notably revealed that without the flow of untaxed contraband, legal imports increased significantly. Later speaking in an interview with Moroccan outlet Le360, the ADII chief described the $429 million increase as “relatively important.” He predicted an even larger amount this year, explaining: “We will have a record year, much better than [pre-pandemic] 2019.” The People's Party of Melilla has pointed to bilateral “diplomatic and political problems" between Morocco and Spain as the reason for the closure of borders between Morocco and the Spanish enclave. Yet local politicians in both Ceuta and Melilla appear to be aware that the sealed borders have unearthed some of the problematic elements of illicit trade in goods between Morocco and the two enclaves. The Spanish press, including El Pais in a recent piece, continues to present the border closure as disproportionately affecting Moroccans in the region. However, the ADII’s new study reveals there can be significant benefits, especially if the boost in customs revenue is reinvested in the region. Meanwhile, the Spanish government has created a commision that brings together six ministries in order to prepare for an eventual reopening of the enclaves’ borders with Morocco. Spainhowever does not expect such a move until the spring of 2022. Aware of Moroccan grievances, the Spanish government has stated it aims to ban the contraband trade. Anonymous sources have told El Pais that a ban on contraband would mean a significant hit on the enclaves’ economy, but they expressed hope such a ban would force Madrid to invest in the development of the two remaining Spanish possessions on the African continent.

  7. Nvidia has confirmed to German news outlet Computerbase the architectures behind the GeForce RTX 2050, MX570 and MX550 graphics cards. We've amended the story to reflect the changes. Nvidia slipped out a quiet announcement of the arrival of three new mobile graphics cards in the spring of 2022. The GeForce RTX 2050 will join the ranks of the GeForce MX570 and MX550 in powering a new wave of laptops for gamers and creators. The GeForce RTX 2050 and GeForce MX570 are based on the GA107 (Ampere) silicon, the same silicon that powers the GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti Mobile. The GeForce MX550, on the other hand, is still based on the TU117 (Turing) silicon from the current GeForce MX450. In regards to featureset, the GeForce MX570 will support Nvidia DLSS and ray tracing in a "limited" fashion. Although the GeForce MX550 has the Tensor and RT cores bake in it, the Turing-based graphics card do not support Nvidia DLSS or ray tracing. As a result, it doesn't support Nvidia Broadcast unlike the GeForce RTX 2050 and MX570. However, the trio of upcoming GeForce graphics card are compatible with the Resizable BAR and Optimus technologies, but not Advanced Optimus. Nvidia listed the GeForce RTX 2050 with 2,048 CUDA cores, around 7% more than the GeForce RTX 2060. However, the GeForce RTX 2050 adheres to a more restricted TDP so it'll come with lower clock speeds. The GeForce RTX 2060 should still be faster. As usual, Nvidia gives its partners some thermal headroom, meaning the power limit on the GeForce RTx 2050 will vary from one product to another. In any event, the graphics card is rated between 30W to 45W. Therefore, the boost clock will vary as well, and we'll find the GeForce RTX 2050 boosting between 1,155 MHz and 1,477 MHz. In terms of the memory configuration, the GeForce RTX 2050 has 4GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14 Gbps. Bound by a 64-bit memory interface, the GeForce RTX 2050 can deliver a maximum memory bandwidth up to 112 GBps. Meanwhile, the GeForce MX550 will be the direct replacement for the GeForce MX450, whereas the GeForce MX570 appears to be a new SKU. Nvidia didn't delve into the intricacies of the GeForce MX570 and MX550. The product pages confirm support for PCIe 4.0 and GDDR6 memory. The GeForce MX570 and MX550's other specifications remain a mystery. The chipmaker only stated that the duo sport "more power-efficient CUDA cores and with faster memory speeds than previous MX GPUs." In addition, Nvidia claims that the GeForce MX570 and MX550 will offer a leap of performance and efficiency in photo and video-editing tasks, such as Adobe Lightroom and Premiere Pro, as well as improved gaming in comparison to integrated graphics.
  8. Keeping control of your Microsoft Teams meetings could soon get a lot easier thanks to a new update aimed at limiting participant numbers. The video conferencing service has announced new meeting room capacity notifications for Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android, hopefully helping prevent virtual overcrowding. The feature could also help in-office staff decide whether to move an in-person meeting online as concerns over Covid continue to rise. Overcrowded According to its entry on the Microsoft 365 roadmap, users will now see a notification on the front of room display alerting in-room meeting participants if the room is over-capacity.* This decision is based on the capacity defined in a room account, which for Android users of Microsoft Teams can be limited in order to cope with computing power and battery life. Microsoft notes that only cameras that support people counting will support this feature. When a panel is deployed outside a Teams Room that supports this feature, an alert will also be visible on the Teams panel, notifying people outside the room that it has reached capacity. Microsoft introduced people counting to Teams in 2020 as more and more users flocked to the platform after being told to work from home. Currently, up to 1,000 people can chat and call in to a Microsoft Teams meeting, although this number rises to up to 20,000 for view-only and listen-only calls, such as presentations or webinars. The new meeting room capacity notifications are set to roll out in February 2022, with all Microsoft Teams on Android users around the world able to experience it. Users will need to ensure their devices are running some of the latest Android builds, after Microsoft recently revealed it will soon revoke support for versions of Teams running on older versions of the software. Support will be pulled for Teams on Android 5 on March 1, 2022, while Android 6 and 7 will retain support until July 1 and September 1, respectively.
