During a pivotal debate in the 2020 US presidential election, one candidate seemed to dominate the stage. They interrupted their rivals at strategic moments, sometimes speaking over them. They directly confronted an opponent, Joe Biden, generating headlines for days and had critics questioning whether they had breached some sort of unspoken political decorum. A swarm of bees found in an east London park has become a "successful" colony at Spitalfields City Farm, a beekeeper said. Salvatore Scotti, a member of the London Beekeepers' Association, said the honeybees had done "exceptionally well" after he rescued them in April. Mr Scotti is a volunteer swarm collector and was called by a member of the public to the swarm in Mile End Park. They were given a home at Spitalfields City Farm after its previous colony did not survive the winter. Mr Scotti said the latest group had now become a "strong colony" despite the summer's wet weather. "The colony had a virgin queen," he said. "So the queen had to go out and meet the boys, and then she came back and she started the process of laying eggs." Honeybees are not in danger in the UK, and are now "significantly" outnumbering native pollinators, particularly in the City of London, Pollinating London Together said. A spokesperson for the organisation said the results from its pollinator count on 1 July showed that "wet conditions" for so much of the summer season had a "noticeable effect" on pollinator numbers. Mr Scotti said despite this weather, the Spitalfields honeybee colony had "thrived". "It's been a very strange season," he said. "It started very late. When you have wet weather, you don't have pollen around. "Somehow this colony has done very well." He added that while new colonies normally "never have enough honey to harvest the first year", this one did. X, formerly Twitter, has been banned in Brazil after failing to meet a deadline set by a Supreme Court judge to name a new legal representative in the country. Alexandre de Moraes ordered the "immediate and complete suspension" of the social media platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines. The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation. Reacting to the decision, X owner Elon Musk said: "Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes." The social media network is said to be used by at least a 10th of the nation's 200 million inhabitants. By Saturday morning some users had reported access to the platform was no longer possible. It closed its office in Brazil earlier this month, saying its representative had been threatened with arrest if she did not comply with orders it described as "censorship" - as well as illegal under Brazilian law. Justice Moraes had ordered that X accounts accused of spreading disinformation - many supporters of the former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro - must be blocked while they are under investigation. He said the company's legal representatives would be held liable if any accounts were reactivated. X has been threatened with fines for refusing to comply with this order, with the company and Mr Musk joining critics in Brazil in accusing the judge as being left-wing. It is the latest in a series of rows involving the tech billionaire - who has clashed with the EU over the regulation of X and earlier this month became embroiled in a war of words with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The head of Brazil's telecommunications agency, which has been tasked with suspending the platform, said he is "proceeding with the compliance" to do so, according to Reuters news agency. Justice Moraes has given companies such as Apple and Google a five-day deadline to remove X from its application stores and block its use on iOS and Android systems. He added that people or businesses using means such as VPNs (virtual private network) to access the platform could be fined R$50,000 (£6,700). According to the judge's order, a ban will be in effect until X names a new legal representative in the country and pays fines for violating Brazilian law. In a previous post from one of its official accounts, X had said it would not comply with the demands. In order to train more powerful large language models, researchers use vast dataset collections that blend diverse data from thousands of web sources. But as these datasets are combined and recombined into multiple collections, important information about their origins and restrictions on how they can be used are often lost or confounded in the shuffle. Not only does this raise legal and ethical concerns, it can also damage a model's performance. For instance, if a dataset is miscategorized, someone training a machine-learning model for a certain task may end up unwittingly using data that are not designed for that task. In addition, data from unknown sources could contain biases that cause a model to make unfair predictions when deployed. To improve data transparency, a team of multidisciplinary researchers from MIT and elsewhere launched a systematic audit of more than 1,800 text datasets on po[CENSORED]r hosting sites. They found that more than 70% of these datasets omitted some licensing information, while about 50% had information that contained errors. Building off these insights, they developed a user-friendly tool called the Data Provenance Explorer that automatically generates easy-to-read summaries of a dataset's creators, sources, licenses, and allowable uses. "These types of tools can help regulators and practitioners make informed decisions about AI deployment, and further the responsible development of AI," says Alex "Sandy" Pentland, an MIT professor, leader of the Human Dynamics Group in the MIT Media Lab, and co-author of an open-access paper about the project, appearing in Nature Machine Intelligence The Data Provenance Explorer could help AI practitioners build more effective models by enabling them to select training datasets that fit their model's intended purpose. In the long run, this could improve the accuracy of AI models in real-world situations, such as those used to evaluate loan applications or respond to customer queries. "One of the best ways to understand the capabilities and limitations of an AI model is understanding what data it was trained on. When you have misattribution and confusion about where data came from, you have a serious transparency issue," says Robert Mahari, a graduate student in the MIT Human Dynamics Group, a JD candidate at Harvard Law School, and co-lead author on the paper. A Labour MP rents out flats with black mould and ant infestations, the BBC has discovered. Jas Athwal, the newly-elected MP for Ilford South, owns 15 rental flats, making him the biggest landlord in the House of Commons. In one block of seven flats owned by Mr Athwal nearly half the tenants said they had to regularly clean their bathroom ceilings to remove mould. The BBC also saw evidence of ant infestations in a number of the seven properties. "The ants are everywhere," one resident said, pointing to insects climbing up a door frame. "They are on my kid’s body and on their clothes." Another resident said they had been threatened with eviction by the letting agent if they complained about problems in their flat or started claiming benefits. Mr Athwal said the properties were managed by an agency, he had not been aware of these problems, and denied any tenant had been threatened with eviction. He said he did not take on tenants on housing benefit to avoid conflicts of interest with his role as the local council leader. He described himself as a "renters’ champion".But Andrew Boff, a Conservative member of the London Assembly who has also visited the flats, is calling on the Labour Party and Redbridge Council to investigate. According to the Redbridge Council website Mr Athwal requires a selective property licence in order to rent out the block of seven properties, a system he introduced in December as the leader of the council. A search on the council’s public licence register indicates that none of the seven properties has a licence. The BBC has separately seen evidence suggesting that one of the seven properties does not have a licence. We have also asked Redbridge Council to confirm this information. They had not responded at the time of publication. Mr Athwal stood down from his role as council leader last month after being elected to Parliament. He said he is in "full compliance" with the landlord licensing scheme. When I visited the properties, which are above an empty shop in Ilford, the communal areas were dirty and the lights did not work. Fire alarms were hanging loose from the ceiling, and a washing machine had been dumped next to a set of stairs. A box of malnourished puppies found in a skip are well on their way to full health, according to an animal sanctuary. They were taken in by the Forest of Dean Dog Rescue in Gloucestershire and have been recovering for the past two weeks. Staff said they were unable to identify the puppies' breed, as they were dehydrated and malnourished, weighing in at 1kg (2.2lbs) each. After receiving treatment at a nearby clinic, the puppies were said to be on the mend will be ready to be rehomed in the next few weeks.Jen Cole, secretrary of Forest of Dean Dog and Rescue, said the puppies were "doing remarkably well." "They're not out of the woods yet, they've still got a long way to go," she added. "Rescues are really struggling and this is happening day in, day out," said Ms Coles. She had urged people to consider if they had the time and finances to look after an animal before adopting. Two weeks ago, the animal shelter received a phone call from a man who turned up at work and found a box of puppies discarded in a skip. They were taken to Drybridge Veterinary Clinic in Coleford for treatment. "They worked tirelessly to work on them that day," said Ms Cole. Two of the puppies had to be kept on drips and almost did not survive. Canada says it will impose a 100% tariff on imports of China-made electric vehicles (EV) after similar announcements by the US and European Union. The country also plans to impose a 25% duty on Chinese steel and aluminium. Canada and its Western allies accuse China of subsidising its EV industry, giving its car makers an unfair advantage. China has called the move "trade protectionism" which "violates World Trade Organization rules"."We are transforming Canada's automotive sector to be a global leader in building the vehicles of tomorrow, but actors like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace", said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Canada's duties on Chinese EVs are due to come into effect on 1 October, while those on steel and aluminium will be implemented from 15 October. A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said Canada's actions "seriously undermine the global economic system, and economic and trade rules". "China urges the Canadian side to immediately correct its erroneous practices," they added. China is Canada's second-largest trading partner, behind the US. In May, the US said it would quadruple its tariffs on imports of Chinese EVs to 100%. That was followed by the EU, which announced plans to impose duties on China-made EVs of up to 36.3%. Canada's tariffs on Chinese EVs will include those made by Tesla at its Shanghai factory. "Tesla will almost certainly be lobbying the Canadian government to get some leeway on these tariffs, as they have already with Europe," said Mark Rainford, a China-based car industry commentator. "If they fail at mitigating the tariff enough, they'll likely look at switching their Canadian imports to either the US or European factories since Canada is their 6th largest market this year and thus not insignificant." Earlier this month, the EU cut its planned extra tariff on China-made Teslas by more than half, after further investigations requested by Elon Musk's car maker. ZURICH, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Next year's Eurovision Song Contest will be held in the Swiss city of Basel, the event's organiser said on Friday, setting it up for an economic boost from the hundreds of thousands of fans expected to flock to its restaurants, hotels and bars. The final, which was watched by 163 million viewers around the world this year, will take place on May 17 in Basel's St Jakobshalle arena, a multi-purpose sport and music venue that can accommodate 12,000 fans. Basel beat competition from Geneva to host the May 2025 event, which Switzerland will host after singer Nemo won this year's competition in Malmo, Sweden. The two Swiss cities were the final candidates chosen according to criteria that included transport connections, hotel capacity and security. Other factors included available venues, sustainability and how the city disposes of waste, as well as experience with large scale events, said Swiss broadcaster SRG which is organising next year's show. "Congratulations to Basel," said Reto Peritz and Moritz Stadler, the co-executive producers of the Eurovision Song Contest, in a statement. "We look forward to working with you to make the ESC an unforgettable experience for everyone." The Israeli military says it has killed the head of the Palestinian armed group Hamas in Jenin and two other fighters, as a major operation continues for a third day in the north of the occupied West Bank. Israeli security forces shot dead Wissam Khazem and then carried out airstrikes on the other two as they attempted to flee, a statement said. The Palestinian health ministry said the three men were killed overnight near the town of Zababdeh, southeast of Jenin. Hamas also confirmed their deaths. Gunfire and explosions continued to be heard inside Jenin itself on Friday, while Israeli forces pulled out of Tulkarm and its refugee camps. There has been no confirmation of the withdrawal from the military, which said on Thursday that it had killed five members of armed groups in Tulkarm, including their local leader. At least 19 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israeli operation, which is one of the biggest in the West Bank in two decades, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Most of those killed have been identified as fighters. But the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) said children and one person with disabilities were reportedly among the dead.
