The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) from Greek: phaskolos, bag + arktos, bear and from Latin: cinereus, grayish) is a marsupial mammal of the Phascolarctidae family endemic to Australia. It was originally found from northern Queensland to the extreme south-east of South Australia. Koalas live on average 14 years. They have a large head, a short muzzle, a flat and V-shaped nose, and their coat is smooth and silky. Its marsupial pouch lies on its belly. The cub stays there until it grows up, and then clings to the mother's back until it becomes an adult. These marsupials have been on the verge of extinction since the beginning of the English colonization of Australia, when the habit of killing them to use their skin emerged. Today, hunting is not the biggest risk but forest fires, which kill many animals, and the elimination of trees where they live, both by burning and by lumberjacks. Feeding They live on top of eucalyptus trees where they can feed profusely. There are hundreds of species of eucalyptus, but the koala feeds on only 20 of these species. Koala 10 A koala eats half a kilogram of eucalyptus leaves a day, which is a lot for such a small animal and which rests 14 hours a day. Eucalyptus leaves are essential in the koala's diet, and their lack leads to their death. They spend an average of 14 hours a day sleeping and resting, and the rest in search of food. https://mundo-animal.fandom.com/pt/wiki/Coala

LONDON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Oasis, one of the 1990s rock bands that defined Britpop, is set to reunite as brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher teased an announcement early on Tuesday and a newspaper said they were planning shows in 2025. The band, whose debut album "Definitely Maybe" was released 30 years ago, split in 2009 when lead guitarist and main songwriter Noel said he could no longer work with Liam, the band's charismatic frontman. Hinting at imminent news, the brothers posted the date "27.08.24" and "8am" in the style of the band's logo on social media late on Sunday. Liam also dedicated the Oasis track "Half the World Away" to his brother during his set at the Reading Festival on Sunday. The Sunday Times, citing industry insiders, said shows were planned at Heaton Park in Manchester, where the band was formed in 1991, and at Wembley Stadium in London in summer 2025. A headline performance at the Glastonbury Festival was also rumoured, according to the newspaper. A tour in 2025 would mark the 30th anniversary of second album "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?", which including the singles "Don't Look Back in Anger" and "Wonderwall". The release of "Roll with It" from the album in August 1995 put Oasis head-to-head with rival Blur's "Country House" in a chart battle that was seized upon by the media. Blur won the coveted number one spot. "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" went on to sell more than 22 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album of the 1990s in Britain and the band's breakthrough in the United States. The brothers were often at loggerheads when the band toured in the 1990s and their hostility continued afterwards. "He thinks he's the man and I think I'm the man, do you know what I mean?" Liam said in 2017. https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/british-band-oasis-reunite-definitely-maybe-2024-08-26/

Since Pavel Durov, the Russian-born billionaire and founder of the Telegram messaging app, was arrested on landing in Paris on Saturday evening, there has been more speculation than substance about his fate. The headline in a Russian newspaper summed up the story: “The arrest (or detention) of ‘Russia’s Zuckerberg’, Pavel Durov, is one of the most important, but mysterious global news stories,” declared Nezavisimaya Gazeta. True. Except that "mysterious" is a bit of an understatement. Why did French police detain him? What charges will he face? Has it anything at all to do with his recent visit to Azerbaijan, where he met (or didn’t meet) Russian President Vladimir Putin? For two days, reporters have quoted "sources close to the investigation" about the offences Pavel Durov may be charged with (allegedly, from complicity in drug-trafficking to fraud). Telegram put out a statement saying Mr Durov had "nothing to hide". On Monday evening, the Paris prosecutor said in a statement that Mr Durov was being held in custody as part of a cyber-criminality investigation. The statement mentioned 12 different offences under investigation that it said were linked to organised crime. These included illicit transactions, child pornography, fraud and the refusal to disclose information to authorities, the prosecutor said. The statement added that Mr Durov's time in custody had been extended and could now last until Wednesday. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly9xqnn3v4o

The CEO of Paris Airports, Augustin de Romanet, has extended an invitation to the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, to test flying taxis and become "the first European to fly, in real conditions" during the Paris Olympic Games. In an interview, he clarified that "we are still fighting to have a certification for flying taxis". President Emmanuel Macron "would be welcome" to come and test flying taxis during the Paris Olympics, launched Saturday the boss of Paris Airports (ADP) Augustin de Romanet in an interview with Ouest-France, 20 days before the start of the Olympic festival. "If he wanted to be the first European to fly on this type of vehicle, in real conditions, at the time of the Olympics, he would be welcome," said Augustin de Romanet, addressing President Macron. "For the Olympic and Paralympic Games, we are always fighting to have a certification" The boss of the Parisian airports (Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly) took advantage of an interview with the Western regional daily "to launch an invitation to the President of the Republic" and take stock of the experimentation of electric flying taxis during the Olympics (July 26-August 11). For this project, ADP has partnered with the Ile-de-France region, which has mobilized 1.5 million euros, and with the German start-up Volocopter, which manufactures the "Volocity", supposed to embody the greening ambitions of the polluting aviation industry. This two-seater aircraft, including that of the pilot, is equipped with batteries powering 18 rotors arranged in a ring above the cockpit. But while the project promoters aimed to transport paying customers during the Olympics, the lack of certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency, now expected in the fall, forces them to consider demonstration flights with free passengers, which also requires authorization. "It's a speed race. We are missing a few hours of engine experimentation to obtain the approval of the European certification body, in order to transport paying passengers," said Augustin de Romanet. He says today he hopes "to have it on December 8, 2024 for the reopening of Notre-Dame since our 'vertiport' (runway for vertical take-off and landing) is moored near the cathedral", on the Seine. "For the Olympic and Paralympic Games, we are still fighting to have a certification for flying taxis, piloted by professionals, but without paying passengers," added Mr. de Romanet. While many municipal elected officials in Paris, from the majority or the opposition, have expressed their hostility to these devices, judging them in particular as elitist, ADP and its partners extol the interest of Volocity - in larger versions - for emergency medical transport (patients or grafts). https://www.europe1.fr/technologies/emmanuel-macron-est-le-bienvenu-pour-tester-les-taxis-volants-pendant-les-jo-dit-le-patron-dadp-4256945

[Politics]Kamala Harris and the New Politics of Joy
GreenBoys posted a topic in Politics / Economics
One of the most striking themes of the Democratic National Convention was the way the message flipped back and forth between grim warnings that democracy is under attack and playful invitations to engage in a politics of joy. Democrats at times seemed to be attempting a tricky tightrope act, akin to inviting people to dance their way out of a burning house. For most of the convention, the message seemed to be: Join the fight to save democracy–and let’s have some fun while we do it. It’s an audacious strategy that President Biden could have never pulled off. The address by ex-President Bill Clinton was a perfect example. “We’ve seen more than one election slip away from us when we thought it couldn’t happen, when people got distracted by phony issues or overconfident. This is a brutal, tough business,” he told the crowd, before concluding a few minutes later: “We need Kamala Harris, the president of joy, to lead us.” Over and over, joy and happiness were the theme of cheerful celebrities and upbeat optimists who took the stage at the United Center in Chicago, including comedians Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Kennan Thompson and Mindy Kahling, poet Amanda Gorman and songsters John Legend, Stevie Wonder and Sheila E. But alongside the fun and funny artistic voices were plenty of speakers like Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, who solemnly invoked the January 6 insurrection and the need to take seriously threats by Donald Trump to terminate the Constitution, be a dictator on Day One and pardon convicted January 6 rioters if elected. “In this life, my father never cast a vote because of Jim Crow, so I dedicated my career to protecting the votes against violence and discrimination. You can imagine what I felt on Jan. 6 when I saw with my own eyes those insurrectionists trying to take that away,” Thompson told the crowd. “They did it to rob millions of Americans of their votes.” “Trump tried to destroy our democracy by lying about the election and inciting a violent mob to attack the Capitol,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said from the podium, before shifting into a preacher’s cadence and drawing cheers: “In the Old Testament Book of Psalms, the scripture tells us that weeping may endure during the long night, but joy will come in the morning.” The Rev. Al Sharpton quoted the same Biblical passage in his remarks. “We’ve endured lies and areas of darkness,” he said. “But if we stay together, Black, white, Latina, Asian, Indian American, if we stay together, joy, joy, joy, joy coming in the morning.” And surprise guest Oprah Winfrey saluted podium speakers who’d told wrenching personal stories about rape, incest and medical trauma caused by restricted access to abortion before doing the pivot. “We won’t go back. We won’t be sent back, pushed back, bullied back, kicked back. We’re not going back, “ she said, before singing out the J-word: “So let us choose. Let us choose truth, let us choose honor, and let us choose joooooooy!” So which is it? Are Democrats waging a desperate fight against a would-be dictator, or trying to have a good time? “It’s not a campaign theme,” Quentin Fulks, deputy campaign manager for the Harris-Walz ticket, told columnist Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times about the j-word. “It’s just something that they’re doing, that they’re bringing to the table. I think if you try to manufacture something like joy, it can go wrong because it’s fake. I think the reason why it’s resonating with people is because it’s authentic.” Harris notably did not utter the world “joy” even once in her prime-time address that concluded the convention. Instead, she listed Trump’s attacks on democracy. “Consider not only the chaos and calamity when he was in office, but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election,” Harris said in the stern, persuasive tones of the courtroom prosecutor she once was. “Donald Trump tried to throw away your votes. When he failed, he sent an armed mob to the U.S. Capitol, where they assaulted law enforcement officers. When politicians in his own party begged him to call off the mob and send help, he did the opposite — he fanned the flames.” Harris, it seems, is not going to downplay or ignore the reality that America in the age of Trump has been flirting with open attacks on democracy. But she should consider embracing the politics of joy—not only because her followers like it, but because expressions of love and happiness have a proven track record of dissolving the dark power of dictatorship. I recently talked about the phenomenon with Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian at New York University whose book Strongmen examines how authoritarian strongmen gain power — and how they lose it. While Trump is an uncomfortably good fit with the likes of Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, India’s Narendra Modi and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, says Ben-Ghiat, many of today’s strongmen are encountering a wave of po[CENSORED]r resistance around the world. “There’s a big movement of anti-authoritarianism building around the world, and we are in the middle of a renaissance of nonviolent protest around the world. And there are places that have had the biggest protests they’ve ever had, or in the last 40 years, like in Poland, in Chile, in Israel,” she told me. “You could name 10 other countries that have the biggest protests they’ve ever had, because there is something changing in the world. And so one of my maxims is to always have hope.” In Turkey, says Ben-Ghiat, the politics of love was the most potent weapon available to push back against the creeping authoritarianism of that country’s strongman, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “One of my Democratic heroes is Ekrem İmamoğlu,” she said, referring to the Mayor of Istanbul. “He ran for office in 2019 on a platform of love. And instead of having rallies, he walked around and hugged people. The total opposite of Erdogan. And he won.” It’s possible that the new politics of joy will continue the activism of the recent past – the women’s march in 2017, the Black Lives Matter demonstrations following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, and this year’s elections – as part of a larger movement to invigorate democracy. “Never give up on the American people. There’s a lot of decency. There’s a lot of people we don’t hear,” Ben-Ghiat says. “A lot of it’s behind the scenes. There are a lot of people working to safeguard our democracy right now.” https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/kamala-harris-and-the-new-politics-of-joy.html -
The African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) is the most common of the leopard subspecies. He is part, with the African lion, the African elephant, the black rhinoceros and the African buffalo, of the so-called "big five" group of the 5 mammals formerly feared and respected by African hunters. It is the largest and most widespread of the leopard subspecies, its weight can reach up to 90 kg for large males, for a body size of 1.90 m to which a good meter of tail must be added. Females are generally 40% smaller[ref. necessary]. They are mainly found in sub-Saharan Africa and west of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia, where they are relatively common. The species is almost extinct in North Africa, where it could once be observed in the High Atlas Mountains. Its habitat is varied, it goes from the savannah (Kenya, Tanzania ...) through the forest (Gabon, Congo ...) without forgetting the mountains (South Africa, Zimbabwe ...) or the desert areas of the Kalahari desert in Namibia and the swamps of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The size disparities are significant depending on the region, for example, in the Cape Province in South Africa, the average weight of the animal does not exceed 30 kilos, while in the Kruger National Park, also in South Africa, the average weight is 60 kilos[ref. necessary]. Nevertheless, the lack of information and data concerning the leopard does not allow us to affirm that the largest specimens are South African, thus according to Pocock the largest leopards are in Algeria (there are now only rare specimens left), in the north of Congo, in the south of Sudan, in the coastal forests of West Africa, in central Gabon and in the rift forest region in Kenya, namely the Aberdares and Mount Kenya[ref. necessary]. These assumptions are based on measurements made from skulls, thus, in the north-east of the Congo, 7 males were measured, and their skull measured on average 261 mm, with two specimens respectively at 279 mm and 282 mm[ref. necessary]. Even more impressive, 3 specimens from the coasts of Gabon reached an average of 274 mm with the largest at 282 mm, this information can be tempered by the fact that the sample is small, the fact remains that the measurements are impressive since they rub shoulders with those of the Pantanal jaguar (the largest subspecies of jaguar) which reaches an average of 282.2 mm in skull size and 282 mm in mato grosso[ref. necessary]. Knowing that the jaguar of the Pantanal weighs on average 100 kilos, it is not excluded to believe that leopards with the same measurements, can also reach an imposing weight, about 90 kilos (the leopard is a little thinner than the jaguar with equal size)[ref. necessary]. For comparison, the leopards reputed to be the largest, namely the South Africans and East Africans, have a skull that measures an average of 230 mm, 260 mm for the largest. All these data are available in Pocock's book: The Leopards of Africa (1932) and also in Carnivora Collected by American Museum Congo Expedition by J.A. Allen. The data on the jaguar come from Notes on the biology and status of the jaguar in Venezuela by Mondolfi and Hoogesteijn 1986. According to Rowland ward (official hunter publications), leopards from the mountainous regions of East Africa measure an average of 260 mm at the level of the skull with even a specimen at 286 mm, which is higher than the average size of the largest subspecies of jaguar1. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Léopard_d'Afrique

This is surely the nastiest of the RC6! Unlike the RS7-R dat which displayed a particular pound and a multitude of red accents, the design of Audi RS6-R is more discreet. However, it is still much more aggressive than the standard RS6. This is thanks to a multitude of new body accessories including a redesigned front bumper with a carbon fiber front teardrop and some kickstands. ABT has adorned the RS6-R with carbon fiber exterior mirrors, new lower side skirts, a roof spoiler, 22-inch wheels and a new rear diffuser. In terms of performance, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the hunting station wagon has been upgraded to develop 740 horsepower and 920 Nm of torque. A much higher power than the original 600 Nm and 800 Nm. Faster and nastier! As a rule, the Audi RS6 swallows the 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, but thanks to these modifications, the ABT signed copy reaches the same speed in just 3.2 seconds. The performance gain is achieved thanks to new turbochargers, a specific ABT cooling system, engine mapping reprogramming and a new exhaust system. The RS6-R also has some other modifications. For example, it benefits from adjustable suspensions, ABT anti-roll bars and some interior improvements, including new floor mats, a carbon fiber and leather steering wheel and ABT and RS6-R badges in the cabin and outside the vehicle. ABT intends to build only 125 copies of its RS6-R which will cost the modest sum of 69,900 euros. Of course, at that price, you don't have the RS6 yet, which costs around 150,000 euros, the 69,900 euros requested by ABT only include the improvement pack. So, still want to treat yourself to the nastiest RS6 on the planet? https://www.turbo.fr/audi/rs6/actualites-auto/voila-enfin-laudi-rs6-r-signee-abt-160300

Manchester City have completed the signing of former captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona on an initial one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. The German midfielder, who was Pep Guardiola's first signing at the club in 2016, spent seven years at City before joining Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023. The 33-year-old won 14 trophies in his first spell at the Etihad, scoring 60 goals in 304 appearances. "My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch," said Gundogan, who was City's captain when they won the Treble in 2023. "Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep - he is the best manager in the world and working with him every day makes you a better player. "Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again." Despite having an impressive debut campaign in Spain, Barcelona decided to part with Gundogan after struggling to register new signing Dani Olmo due to the club's financial issues. Gundogan was one of the club's highest earners and his departure on a free transfer will help Barcelona comply with La Liga spending restrictions. "I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad," Gundogan wrote on Instagram following the announcement. Gundogan added he had been "looking forward to helping my team-mates in the new campaign" but he was "grateful" to have spent 12 months at Barcelona. Speaking ahead of Ipswich Town's visit to Manchester on Saturday, Guardiola said the chance to re-sign the midfielder came out of the blue. "It was a complete surprise, unexpected," said Guardiola. "We didn't have any doubts when the possibility to re-sign him was open, and we're absolutely delighted that he's back." Capped 82 times for Germany, Gundogan announced his international retirement following the country's Euro 2024 exit in the quarter-finals to Spain. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cvge0nre418o

SARAJEVO, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Hollywood actor, film director and producer Meg Ryan was honoured by the Sarajevo Film Festival with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo for her contribution to the film industry late on Tuesday. Ryan was one of four film authors who received the award, alongside US and Palestinian film directors Alexander Payne and Elia Suleiman and U.S. actor and producer John Turturro. "It's an award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the world of cinema, to her incredible talents," festival director Jovan Marjanović said before handing Ryan a silver heart-shaped award. Ryan symbolically presented a special screening of her 1998 hit romantic comedy "You’ve Got Mail" at an open air cinema, the same place where it was first screened at the festival in 1999. At the masterclass moderated by Oscar-winning Bosnian film director Danis Tanovic, Ryan talked about "What Happens Later", her second feature that she directed, wrote and co-starred with David Duchovny, which was also screened at the festival. She said that she ventured into acting to pay for her journalism studies, and that she was an "untrained actress". "I had a beginner's mind, which I see now as a very valuable thing, there is certain naivety, innocence that is important when you are an artist," she said. The Sarajevo Film Festival, a movie showcase spreading from Vienna to Istanbul, was created by a group of film enthusiasts towards the end of the Bosnian war 30 years ago. It will showcase 240 films in total this year. https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/meg-ryan-honoured-achievement-by-sarajevo-film-festival-2024-08-21/

The office of Mr Netanyahu reiterated on Wednesday that Israel planned to keep troops in a strip of land along the border between Gaza and Egypt - known as the Philadelphi Corridor - in the event of any such deal. “Israel will insist on the achievement of all of its objectives for the war, as they have been defined by the security cabinet, including that Gaza never again constitutes a security threat to Israel. This requires securing the southern border,” a statement said. The issue has become a key sticking point - with Hamas so far insisting on a total withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Egypt also opposes the presence of Israeli troops along its border with Gaza. On Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Israel had agreed to a “US bridging proposal”, after a three-hour meeting with Mr Netanyahu in Jerusalem. Mr Blinken would not confirm to the BBC whether the US proposal sti[CENSORED]ted the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Philadelphi corridor, but Mr Netanyahu’s repeated public insistence on the plan appears to have irritated Washington. A US official accused the prime minister of making “maximalist statements” that were “not constructive to getting a ceasefire deal across the finish line”. A new round of ceasefire talks is set to take place in Cairo this weekend, with US, Israeli, Egyptian and Qatari representatives in attendance. Hamas has so far not said they will attend, but it is believed they are continuing to receive updates on the negotiations from Egyptian and Qatari mediators. A member of the Hamas political bureau told the BBC on Monday that the group had “agreed a deal [through mediators] on 2 July” and therefore “don't need a new round of negotiations or to discuss the new demands of Benjamin Netanyahu”. “We have shown maximum flexibility and positivity,” Basem Naim said. He claimed that Mr Netanyahu was “not interested in reaching a ceasefire, only in flaring up the region... and serving his own personal political interests". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cze5r4e66ydo
