  1. Luxurywatch aficionados are no strangers to the exceptional craftsmanship that comes with opening an A. Lange & Söhne timepiece. However, their latest creation, the Datograph Handwerkskunst, is in a league of its own. This new limited edition chronograph, released to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Datograph, showcases the pinnacle of artisanal excellence and technical innovation. But before you start checking your bank account, know this: you won’t be able to buy one – with only 25 units produced, this masterpiece is more elusive than 5G signal in the countryside. The watch features a striking black-rhodiumed dial adorned with tremblage engraving, a rare technique that creates a textured, three-dimensional surface. This intricate engraving requires an exceptional level of skill, ensuring that each piece is a unique work of art. The light-grey subdials and chamfered appliqués result in a super elegant watch. Beyond its stunning dial, the Datograph Handwerkskunst houses the manufacture calibre L951.8, a manually wound movement. One of its standout features is the black-polishing of the chronograph levers, a technique that gives the levers a jet-black appearance from certain angles. This level of detail extends throughout the movement, with granular surfaces made from German silver that mirror the tremblage engraving on the dial. https://www.stuff.tv/hot-stuff/the-a-lange-sohne-datograph-handwerkskunst-is-a-masterpiece-but-you-wont-be-able-to-buy-one/
  2. It might be surprising, but free VPNs are no longer just for PCs. You can also use them to help easily boost your security and privacy game on an Android device. Whether you want extra security while using a public Wi-Fi network, or to get around geo-restrictions for your favorite streaming services, a free VPN can help you do it without having to pay a cent. 4. During a pivotal debate in the 2020 US presidential election, one candidate seemed to dominate the stage. They interrupted their rivals at strategic moments, sometimes speaking over them. They directly confronted an opponent, Joe Biden, generating headlines for days and had critics questioning whether they had breached some sort of unspoken political decorum. That candidate, however, wasn’t Donald Trump. It was Kamala Harris. On 10 September, Ms Harris will once again take to the debate stage. But this time, having gone one step further than 2020 by becoming the Democratic candidate for president, she will face Trump in a showdown that poses the toughest challenge of her campaign so far. Debates have played a major role in Ms Harris’s political career, from her run for California attorney general to her ascent to the vice-presidency. In watching four of her key debates back, it is clear that Ms Harris knows when to seize the spotlight, but also when to stand by as a rival administers a self-inflicted blow. Ms Harris will be hoping to utilise these instincts against the notoriously combative Trump. Her campaign will also want to dispel longstanding concerns about her political messaging skills that began with her failed run for the White House in 2020, and were only heightened by her fumbling some interviews in recent years. There is no room for error given how these events are defined by viral clips, so it is just as important for the Harris campaign that she avoids stumbling as it is for her to land a highlight-reel blow. “She needs to hold her own,” said Aimee Allison, founder of She The People, an organisation that supports women of colour in politics. “And she needs to communicate on the debate stage what she’s fighting for." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3rd1yzgl0qo
  5. A swarm of bees found in an east London park has become a "successful" colony at Spitalfields City Farm, a beekeeper said. Salvatore Scotti, a member of the London Beekeepers' Association, said the honeybees had done "exceptionally well" after he rescued them in April. Mr Scotti is a volunteer swarm collector and was called by a member of the public to the swarm in Mile End Park. They were given a home at Spitalfields City Farm after its previous colony did not survive the winter. Mr Scotti said the latest group had now become a "strong colony" despite the summer's wet weather. "The colony had a virgin queen," he said. "So the queen had to go out and meet the boys, and then she came back and she started the process of laying eggs." Honeybees are not in danger in the UK, and are now "significantly" outnumbering native pollinators, particularly in the City of London, Pollinating London Together said. A spokesperson for the organisation said the results from its pollinator count on 1 July showed that "wet conditions" for so much of the summer season had a "noticeable effect" on pollinator numbers. Mr Scotti said despite this weather, the Spitalfields honeybee colony had "thrived". "It's been a very strange season," he said. "It started very late. When you have wet weather, you don't have pollen around. "Somehow this colony has done very well." He added that while new colonies normally "never have enough honey to harvest the first year", this one did. Bees rely on the honey they have created as food for the winter months, so only the excess is harvested, with a generous amount left for the colony, Mr Scotti said. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn02yw2zx9lo
  6. Supercar failures continue. After the Germans and the French, it is the turn of the English.Rarely so many supercars will have been the subject of correction operations in such a short time. Indeed, a few days apart, information about Bugatti, Ferrari and, now, McLaren have just been made public. And, once again, the problem identified is far from trivial. Thus, on a series of Artura, in this case the vehicles assembled from July 18, 2022 until November 23, 2023, the British manufacturer noted the possible presence of a defective duct in the low-pressure fuel delivery system. To remedy this, the recall referenced SRC 16 K 003 was launched. A very open engine Recall that the Artura is a GT that has accumulated firsts for McLaren. This is, in fact, the manufacturer's first plug-in hybrid, but also its first production model equipped with a V6. The latter is distinguished by its very pronounced opening since the angle formed by the rows of cylinders is 120 °. In its first version, the Artura develops 680 hp but, since the beginning of this year, its cavalry has been reinforced and is now set at 700 hp. On the examples identified previously, it turns out that the famous fuel line can, during the starting phase of the internal combustion engine, become unstuck. Close to the hottest parts of the mechanics, the leak that would then occur could lead to a fire. For a few weeks now, McLaren has therefore started contacting the owners of the Artura approved under the CE type e9*KS18/858*11168* so that their car is checked without delay. https://www.caradisiac.com/au-tour-de-la-mclaren-artura-de-passer-au-rappel-210699.htm
  7. Defending champion Novak Djokovic followed Carlos Alcaraz out of the door at the US Open as he suffered a shock defeat by Alexei Popyrin in the third round. Australia's 28th seed Popyrin stood with his arms aloft as he wrapped up a surprise 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 win to hand Djokovic his earliest US Open exit in 18 years. The Serb will end the year without winning a Grand Slam for the first time since 2017, while his search for a record 25th major title goes on. Djokovic was far from his clinical best, serving a career-high 14 double faults in a Grand Slam match and committing 49 unforced errors. "I have played some of the worst tennis I have ever played," the 37-year-old said. "Honestly, the way I felt and the way I played from the beginning of this tournament, third round is a success." Djokovic's exit follows that of French Open and Wimbledon winner Alcaraz, who lost to unseeded Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. He said he "spent a lot of energy" winning Olympic gold - his self-proclaimed "biggest sporting achievement" - earlier this month. "I tried my best, I didn't have any physical issues. I just felt out of gas, and you could see that. From the first match, I just didn't find myself on this court." Djokovic added. "Life moves on. I'll try to recalibrate and look forward to what's next." Popyrin, 25, will make his first fourth-round appearance at a Grand Slam when he faces Frances Tiafoe, who moved past fellow American Ben Shelton in a five-set thriller. https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/articles/crkm8gr3ey7o
  8. Aug 30 (Reuters) - News of British rock band Oasis' long-awaited reunion tour next summer has led to a surge in searches for travel to Britain and Ireland, Spanish online travel booking company eDreams (EDRE.MC), opens new tab said on Friday. Searches for flights overall rose nearly 30-fold on Tuesday, the day the band announced its return to the stage, eDreams said. Tickets for the 14-show tour being billed as the "big event of 2025" go on sale in Britain and Ireland on Saturday. For some destinations on the tour, the leap in interest was even greater. Compared to a year ago, travel searches for the Welsh capital Cardiff multiplied by more than 100-fold on Tuesday, eDreams added. They jumped by eight times for Manchester - the Gallagher brothers' hometown in northern England - and by seven times for Dublin. In terms of nationality, Italians ranked first as the most interested in flying to the cities hosting Oasis concerts, closely followed by Spaniards, Germans, and British and French citizens. Taylor Swift fans also triggered air travel demand in Europe as they followed their idol's "Eras" tour between May and August this year. Oasis disbanded in 2009 following the abrupt departure of its main songwriter and lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher, after a series of public spats with his younger brother Liam, the Britpop band's frontman. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/oasis-reunion-drives-surge-edreams-travel-searches-2024-08-30/
  9. X, formerly Twitter, has been banned in Brazil after failing to meet a deadline set by a Supreme Court judge to name a new legal representative in the country. Alexandre de Moraes ordered the "immediate and complete suspension" of the social media platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines. The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation. Reacting to the decision, X owner Elon Musk said: "Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes." The social media network is said to be used by at least a 10th of the nation's 200 million inhabitants. By Saturday morning some users had reported access to the platform was no longer possible. It closed its office in Brazil earlier this month, saying its representative had been threatened with arrest if she did not comply with orders it described as "censorship" - as well as illegal under Brazilian law. Justice Moraes had ordered that X accounts accused of spreading disinformation - many supporters of the former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro - must be blocked while they are under investigation. He said the company's legal representatives would be held liable if any accounts were reactivated. X has been threatened with fines for refusing to comply with this order, with the company and Mr Musk joining critics in Brazil in accusing the judge as being left-wing. It is the latest in a series of rows involving the tech billionaire - who has clashed with the EU over the regulation of X and earlier this month became embroiled in a war of words with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The head of Brazil's telecommunications agency, which has been tasked with suspending the platform, said he is "proceeding with the compliance" to do so, according to Reuters news agency. Justice Moraes has given companies such as Apple and Google a five-day deadline to remove X from its application stores and block its use on iOS and Android systems. He added that people or businesses using means such as VPNs (virtual private network) to access the platform could be fined R$50,000 (£6,700). According to the judge's order, a ban will be in effect until X names a new legal representative in the country and pays fines for violating Brazilian law. In a previous post from one of its official accounts, X had said it would not comply with the demands. "Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil – simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents," the post said. "The fundamental issue at stake here is that Judge de Moraes demands we break Brazil’s own laws. We simply won’t do that." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y3rnl5qv3o
  10. Apple is gearing up to launch the iPhone 16 on September 9th, so we've brought on Bloomberg's Mark Gurman to chat about his scoops around Apple's upcoming hardware. 11. In order to train more powerful large language models, researchers use vast dataset collections that blend diverse data from thousands of web sources. But as these datasets are combined and recombined into multiple collections, important information about their origins and restrictions on how they can be used are often lost or confounded in the shuffle. Not only does this raise legal and ethical concerns, it can also damage a model's performance. For instance, if a dataset is miscategorized, someone training a machine-learning model for a certain task may end up unwittingly using data that are not designed for that task. In addition, data from unknown sources could contain biases that cause a model to make unfair predictions when deployed. To improve data transparency, a team of multidisciplinary researchers from MIT and elsewhere launched a systematic audit of more than 1,800 text datasets on po[CENSORED]r hosting sites. They found that more than 70% of these datasets omitted some licensing information, while about 50% had information that contained errors. Building off these insights, they developed a user-friendly tool called the Data Provenance Explorer that automatically generates easy-to-read summaries of a dataset's creators, sources, licenses, and allowable uses. "These types of tools can help regulators and practitioners make informed decisions about AI deployment, and further the responsible development of AI," says Alex "Sandy" Pentland, an MIT professor, leader of the Human Dynamics Group in the MIT Media Lab, and co-author of an open-access paper about the project, appearing in Nature Machine Intelligence The Data Provenance Explorer could help AI practitioners build more effective models by enabling them to select training datasets that fit their model's intended purpose. In the long run, this could improve the accuracy of AI models in real-world situations, such as those used to evaluate loan applications or respond to customer queries. "One of the best ways to understand the capabilities and limitations of an AI model is understanding what data it was trained on. When you have misattribution and confusion about where data came from, you have a serious transparency issue," says Robert Mahari, a graduate student in the MIT Human Dynamics Group, a JD candidate at Harvard Law School, and co-lead author on the paper. Mahari and Pentland are joined on the paper by co-lead author Shayne Longpre, a graduate student in the Media Lab; Sara Hooker, who leads the research lab Cohere for AI; as well as others at MIT, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Lille in France, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Olin College, Carnegie Mellon University, Contextual AI, ML Commons, and Tidelift. https://techxplore.com/news/2024-08-transparency-lacking-datasets-large-language.html
  12. Always faster, LG announced some time ago an OLED panel with a QHD definition, capable of mounting up to 480 Hz with a response time of 0.02 ms. Today, LG announces the mass production of this type of panel, which should lead us to even more efficient screens in the coming months. LG also takes the opportunity to announce that, on this type of panel, the structure of the WRGB pixels has been optimized in order to facilitate reading when editing text, while improving the sharpness in play. On the other hand still no 24-inch OLED FHD in sight. https://www.cowcotland.com/news/92787/lg-annonce-la-production-en-masse-de-ses-nouvelles-dalles-qd-oled-en-480-hz.html
  13. A Labour MP rents out flats with black mould and ant infestations, the BBC has discovered. Jas Athwal, the newly-elected MP for Ilford South, owns 15 rental flats, making him the biggest landlord in the House of Commons. In one block of seven flats owned by Mr Athwal nearly half the tenants said they had to regularly clean their bathroom ceilings to remove mould. The BBC also saw evidence of ant infestations in a number of the seven properties. "The ants are everywhere," one resident said, pointing to insects climbing up a door frame. "They are on my kid’s body and on their clothes." Another resident said they had been threatened with eviction by the letting agent if they complained about problems in their flat or started claiming benefits. Mr Athwal said the properties were managed by an agency, he had not been aware of these problems, and denied any tenant had been threatened with eviction. He said he did not take on tenants on housing benefit to avoid conflicts of interest with his role as the local council leader. He described himself as a "renters’ champion".But Andrew Boff, a Conservative member of the London Assembly who has also visited the flats, is calling on the Labour Party and Redbridge Council to investigate. According to the Redbridge Council website Mr Athwal requires a selective property licence in order to rent out the block of seven properties, a system he introduced in December as the leader of the council. A search on the council’s public licence register indicates that none of the seven properties has a licence. The BBC has separately seen evidence suggesting that one of the seven properties does not have a licence. We have also asked Redbridge Council to confirm this information. They had not responded at the time of publication. Mr Athwal stood down from his role as council leader last month after being elected to Parliament. He said he is in "full compliance" with the landlord licensing scheme. When I visited the properties, which are above an empty shop in Ilford, the communal areas were dirty and the lights did not work. Fire alarms were hanging loose from the ceiling, and a washing machine had been dumped next to a set of stairs. One resident showed me black mould growing on their bathroom ceiling, adding that a family member is a "clean freak" who keeps scrubbing the area with bleach to keep the mould at bay. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyg1j0lv1go
  14. A box of malnourished puppies found in a skip are well on their way to full health, according to an animal sanctuary. They were taken in by the Forest of Dean Dog Rescue in Gloucestershire and have been recovering for the past two weeks. Staff said they were unable to identify the puppies' breed, as they were dehydrated and malnourished, weighing in at 1kg (2.2lbs) each. After receiving treatment at a nearby clinic, the puppies were said to be on the mend will be ready to be rehomed in the next few weeks.Jen Cole, secretrary of Forest of Dean Dog and Rescue, said the puppies were "doing remarkably well." "They're not out of the woods yet, they've still got a long way to go," she added. "Rescues are really struggling and this is happening day in, day out," said Ms Coles. She had urged people to consider if they had the time and finances to look after an animal before adopting. Two weeks ago, the animal shelter received a phone call from a man who turned up at work and found a box of puppies discarded in a skip. They were taken to Drybridge Veterinary Clinic in Coleford for treatment. "They worked tirelessly to work on them that day," said Ms Cole. Two of the puppies had to be kept on drips and almost did not survive. "They were really in a shocking way and I think if it had been a few more hours, I think we'd have lost at least two of them." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gq7jk91qpo
