We knew we’d be seeing the Google Pixel Fold at Google I/O 2023, and now the company's Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 rival has been officially announced as part of Google’s keynote.

You can head over to our Google I/O 2023 live blog for news on all the other announcements, including the Pixel 7a and Pixel Tablet, but as for Google's first foldable phone, the company has revealed that this key rival to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a Tensor G2 chipset, just like the Pixel 7 line, along with 12GB of RAM, and a choice of 256GB or 512GB of storage.

This is also apparently the thinnest foldable on the market at 12.1mm thick. In fact, when unfolded it's also the thinnest Pixel model, coming in at just 5.8mm.

It has a 7.6-inch foldable display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5.8-inch FHD+ cover display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an IPX8 rating for water resistance, and Gorilla Glass Victus to protect it from scrapes and falls.

The best cameras on a foldable

The Google Pixel Fold also has a triple-lens camera on the back, which Google claims is the best foldable camera system. This includes a 48MP main camera, a 10.8MP telephoto snapper with 5x optical zoom, and a 10.8MP ultra-wide snapper. There's also a 9.5MP camera on the front, and an 8MP camera on the inside.

As for the battery, that's a 4,821mAh one, offering over 24 hours of life, and up to 72 hours in Extreme Battery Saver mode. It charges back up at 30W.

And the software is built for foldables, with new features like a dual screen interpreter mode, so when translating speech to another language, both the speaker and the listener can see a screen with the translation on it.

Of course, there's a split-screen mode too, so you can make the most of that large inner screen, and there's tabletop mode, which lets you fold the display in half so it can sit on a table like a laptop, with the vertical screen showing the video while the horizontal section shows video controls.

You can pre-order the Pixel Fold from today in the US and UK (though there's no word on Australia), and it ships next month. Prices start at $1,799 / £1,749 (around AU$2,655), and if you pre-order then you'll get a Pixel Watch thrown in free.

That price is in line with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, so it will be interesting to see whether the Pixel Fold can match what's arguably the best foldable phone.

  3. Game Freak Private Division

Tokyo-based game developer Game Freak, widely known to gamers for its work on the Pokémon series, announced a partnership with publisher Private Division on a new action/adventure IP.

Codenamed Project Bloom, the new game appears to be targeting a more mature audience than the studio's previous titles, if the concept art is any indication. It is currently in early development and scheduled to be released sometime in fiscal year 2026.

Kota Furushima, Director at Game Freak, said in a statement:

We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to create new IP that is bold and tonally different from our prior work. From the beginning, Private Division was the publisher we wanted to work with on our new game. Their track record and global expertise give us all the confidence to create a sweeping new action-adventure game that we can’t wait to share more about in the future.

Michael Worosz, Chief Strategy Officer at Take-Two Interactive and Head of Private Division, added:

Over the past three decades, you’d be hard pressed to find a studio which has released more iconic hits than Game Freak. We’re ready to help Game Freak unleash their potential and we’re honored to be the first Western publisher to work alongside this exceptionally talented and proven team to bring a bold new IP to market.

Beyond Pokémon games like Sword and Shield, Legends: Arceus, and Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak also released the roleplaying game Little Town Hero in 2019. However, the game didn't fare nearly as well as their main franchise, receiving mixed reviews. In Wccftech's, Nathan Birch rated Little Town Hero 6.5 out of 10. Here's an excerpt of what he thought about it:

Game Freak’s latest side thing is Little Town Hero, an adventure that takes place entirely in your standard humble village so many JRPGs start off in. As with most Game Freak titles, Little Town Hero has a fairly simple and predictable story, but isn’t without its charms. Most of the game’s characters are likable, and it’s interesting to see Game Freak break free of their usual E-rated box (this game is rated T and features drinking, smoking, and some surprisingly freaky monster designs). That said, the story can get a bit repetitive – carrying on a Pokemon tradition, Axe has a rival in the game, who you end up fighting at least seven or eight times before the game is over. Your rival isn’t a terrible character, but the way they use him is overkill.

[...] As you may have picked up on, I’m a bit split on Little Town Hero. The game’s issues are hard to overlook, and yet, I still happily gobbled up the game’s 10-to-12-hour story in only a couple days. For all the game’s shortcomings, I still found it strangely compelling, although I realize I might be an outlier. For many, if not the majority, or players, a little of this game will likely go a long way.

As for Private Division, they've had a quiet couple of years except for the releases of OlliOlli World, Rollerdrome, and Kerbal Space Program 2, though the latter game wasn't that well received in its early access debut.

Still, they have an interesting lineup beyond the newly announced Game Freak game. They'll publish a Middle-earth game in development at Wētā Workshop, a survival horror title from Bloober Team, and the ambitious next game from Ori developer Moon Studios, among others.

Samsung is apparently working on a new style of foldable phone – and it could be that it releases a future Z-series entry that, when viewed from a certain angle, actually resembles the letter Z.
While even the best foldable phones have yet to set the world on fire, it's still early days for these devices, and it makes sense that Samsung would continue to innovate with potential new designs.

    Practicality? What’s that?

Samsung's patents, like those of any brand, are often explorations of new concepts, and not every idea sees the light of day. And while a triple-fold phone like the one pictured in the patent might look cool, we have some questions about how it would work in practice.

What would be the point of such a device? Perhaps it could be a paucity of imagination on my behalf, but this seems like it’ll be more cool than useful for most. We can imagine that artists and architects could see value in a device like that, but those haven't been enough to make the Z Fold sell iPhone numbers.

And let’s not forget, Samsung's foldables still are susceptible to physics. The first Fold was prone to shattering, and the more moving parts a device has, the more points of failure are introduced.

These are things that Samsung would want to address before bringing a new folding phone design to the market. However, just because a device does make it to store shelves, doesn’t necessarily mean that every problem has been solved – as the aforementioned original Galaxy Fold demonstrated. Still, as a patent, all it needs to be is novel, and that’s certainly true in this case.

Samsung has floated other interesting foldable ideas we’ve written about in the past. These have included an entry with rotating camera module and a wild slideable, along with rollable and dual fold concepts. When it comes to bringing devices to market, though, Samsung has stuck to its clamshell and book-style foldables for the time being, so it may be a while before we see the South Korean company produce something like the Motorolas’ rollable phone concept.

Intel's 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPU support has been added to the upcoming Linux 6.3 Kernel as a part of a patch.

Intel Speeds Up Linux Support For 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs, Launch Expected Next Year
There's more evidence now that Intel is going to launch its 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPU family on the desktop platform. We have seen various leaks over the past few months and the latest information comes within the Linux 6.3 patch which adds support for Meteor Lake-S SPI serial flash along with a list of Meteor Lake-S PCI IDs to the driver list of supported devices. This patch was released recently on the 6th of May.

    Intel-14th-Gen-Meteor-Lake-S-Desktop-CPUs.png.webp

Despite earlier rumors saying that Intel had canceled its 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop family, it is looking more likely that desktop users will be getting some form of Meteor Lake. Just a few weeks back, we reported that the Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs will comprise of up to Core i5 SKUs & TDPs of 35-65W. These chips will exist alongside the higher-end Arrow Lake-S parts which will scale up to Core i9 SKUs with 125W TDPs. Both chips will feature support on the brand-new 800-series chipset platform.

    Intel-Meteor-Lake-S-Arrow-Lake-S-Desktop-CPU-SKUs-800-Series-Platform.png.webp

The new Intel 800-series chipset platform will support at least two generations of CPUs including Meteor Lake-S and Arrow Lake-S. The platform will drop the existing LGA 1700/1800 socket & use the new LGA 1851 socket which has a similar package size as the existing socket making sure that cooler compatibility remains intact and will come in Z890, H870, B860 & H810 solutions. The 800-series motherboards will also support faster DDR5 memory. Based on the previous information, the 800-series platform will offer the following SKUs within the Meteor Lake-S lineup:

    MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 125W TDP
    MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65W TDP
    MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35W TDP
    MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65WTDP
    MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35WTDP
Meanwhile, the Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop SKUs are expected in the following configurations:

    Arrow Lake-S 24 (8P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 125W TDP
    Arrow Lake-S 24 (8P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65W TDP
    Arrow Lake-S 24 (8P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35W TDP
Intel's own confirmation that they are testing 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S CPUs & reports of the chips already being sampled should be evidence enough that the family is indeed heading for a desktop launch, even if in a limited fashion. Intel is aiming for a 2024 launch for its first 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs as Raptor Lake-S chips with up to 6.2 GHz clock speeds will be released for desktops in 2H 2023.

  6. GYLT

Spanish developer Tequila Works was among those who bet heavily on Google Stadia, releasing their third game after Deadlight and RiME, GYLT, as a launch exclusive for the Stadia platform in November 2019.

Tequila Works CEO Raul Rubio also defended the platform's unsuccessful launch in early 2020. At the time, he beckoned people to wait until mind-blowing features promised by Google behind the scenes would materialize. He also said streaming was in the same stage as Steam's infancy and that eventually, people wouldn't even question cloud gaming in the future.

While those features were never shown to the world and Stadia officially shut down earlier this year, Rubio was definitely right on the importance of cloud gaming. While the market is still relatively small, it is considered to be so important for the future that the UK's Competition and Markets Authority blocked Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard based on cloud gaming competition concerns.

Anyway, various developers have been working to bring their Stadia exclusive to PC and consoles. GYLT is among them and the newly published Steam page is a hint that it may be released sooner rather than later.

For those unfamiliar with the premise of GYLT, this is a narrative adventure game with stealth, puzzle, and action elements. The protagonist is Sally, a young girl who's had a life. Following the disappearance of her friend Emily and being chased by bullies, Sally somehow finds herself in a twisted version of her hometown filled with her nightmares and fears.

The game's soundtrack was composed by Cris Velasco (God of War, Bloodborne, and Chrono Odyssey, among others). The Steam page also shares a few extra details, such as the co-developer of this port (Parallel Circles) and the system requirements.

    • MINIMUM:
    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
    • Processor: i7-2600K
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: GTX 1070
    • Storage: 6 GB available space
    • RECOMMENDED:
    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
    • Processor: i7-4790K
    • Memory: 32 GB RAM
    • Graphics: GTX 2070

While the Steam page only speaks to the arrival of a PC version of GYLT, it is conceivable the game will be released on consoles, too. What is presently unclear is whether Tequila Works (also busy with Song of Nuru: A League of Legends Story on behalf of Riot) will improve the game in any way. The original reviews for the Stadia version weren't that great.

Most years, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip line doesn’t have much competition, but in 2022 that all changed, as the Motorola Razr 2022 became a serious rival to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

This wasn’t Motorola’s first clamshell foldable, but it was the company’s first genuinely great one, and it’s left us with high hopes for the Motorola Razr 2023.

We’re already hearing a little about this upcoming phone too, so below you’ll find all the news, leaks and rumors we’ve heard so far, and we’ll add to this article once we hear more.

Under that, you’ll also find a list of the things we want from the Motorola Razr 2023, to make it an even better foldable phone than the Razr 2022.

    Cut to the chase
What is it? Motorola's next foldable phone
When is it out? Probably around August 2023
How much will cost? Possibly around £949.99 / AU$1,599 (roughly $1,155)
Motorola Razr 2023: release date and price
We’ll probably be waiting a while for the Motorola Razr 2023, as the Razr 2022 only landed in August 2022, so August 2023 is the most likely release month for the next model.

Motorola hasn’t stuck with August every year, but these phones are always at least announced towards the end of the year, so if anything, August is probably the earliest we’ll see it.

That said, the CEO of Lenovo (which owns Motorola these days) said in February 2023 that the next Razr is coming "very soon", so it's possible it will land earlier than expected.

There’s also the question of which countries it will actually be made available in too, because while the 2022 model is available in the UK and Australia, you can’t currently buy it in the US – though previous models did launch there.

There aren’t any price rumors yet, but the Motorola Razr 2022 starts at £949.99 / AU$1,599 (around $1,155), so a similar price for the next model is entirely possible.

The Razr 2022 marked the best price-performance balance Motorola's foldable series had struck to date, and finally rendered them cost competitive against Samsung's equivalent Galaxy Z Flip. It'd be great for pricing to continue to fall, of course, but that feels like a step too far, even if new contender Oppo looks to be pushing the needle in that direction, with the impressively approachable Oppo Find N2 Flip.

Motorola Razr 2023: news and leaks

Before we get to leaks, there's some news straight from the CEO of Lenovo, which owns Motorola. They claim that the Razr 2023 is "much better" than the current model, and that the improvements will focus on the hinge and apps.

Now onto the leaks, and there aren’t many Motorola Razr 2023 leaks so far, but we have heard a couple of things, including one claim that comes from Evan Blass(opens in new tab), a reputable leaker who tweeted that there will be two new Razr models in 2023.

Juno is expected to be a successor to the Razr 2022, because an earlier leak on 91Mobiles(opens in new tab) said the Motorola Razr 2022’s successor was codenamed Juno and would have a 144Hz screen once again. Blass says the device is to be branded the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. This could be a move by the company to unify its foldable and non-foldable brands, cementing the Motorola Razr as a staple. A Motorola Edge 40 Pro was released in April 2023.

So what about Venus? That is said to be the base Motorola Razr 40, a pared-down model of the Motorola Razr Ultra which has been previously reported as the Motorola Razr Lite.

Most reports and renders have focused on the larger folding phone, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. Blass has shown a few renders of the upcoming phone, showing a Razr with a much larger cover display with another render showing off its software. On the new design, the cover screen wraps around the camera lenses and takes up considerably more of the front face while closed. We'd love to see a more useful external screen, and a follow-up live image seems to confirm it. It also showed off a potential two-tone design that we find quite fun and fetching.

A report from XDA Developers claimed the Ultra would have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. A pair of 12-megapixel cameras and a 32MP front-facing camera are expected to handle imaging.

At the same time, multiple reports from MySmartPrice (opens in new tab)(citing FCC certification and other sources) would ship with a dual-cell 3,640mAh battery and be capable of 33W fast charging speeds. An earlier report had said the Razr would have a 2,850mAh battery, but that was likely due to incomplete information.

From the FCC certification, the phone's dual-cell battery is made up of said 2,850mAh battery and an additional 790mAh unit. With FCC certification done, of course, the Moto Razr Plus or Moto Razr 2023 is expected to launch pretty soon. Rumors from Max Jambor say that the company will be holding as yet unannounced launch events in Madrid and New York where the reveal will be made.

    What we want to see
There are a number of things we’d like to see Motorola work on with the next Razr model, with the following five topping our list.

    1. Better cameras

    968SkVet9mB8sxwPuRJrX9-970-80.jpg.webp

The Motorola Razr 2022 has significantly better cameras than the previous models, but there’s still room for improvement on the Razr 2023.

We want to see improvements to the post-processing, a better ultra-wide camera – as the Razr 2022’s disappoints – and ideally even the addition of a telephoto lens; though that last bit might be too much to hope for.

    2. Long-term update support

Motorola is only promising two years of Android version updates and three years of security patches with the Razr 2022, which just isn’t enough, especially for such an expensive phone, and all the more so given that Samsung and OnePlus are offering four years of Android updates and five years of security patches with select phones.

So, we want to see Motorola commit to much longer software support with the Razr 2023, otherwise it could be hard to recommend.

    3. Water resistance

    XmLoBHERyU92ekCwJUq2f9-970-80.jpg.webp

It seems like it would be hard to make a foldable phone water-resistant, but somehow Samsung has managed it with recent handsets, so we’d like to see Motorola do the same with the next Razr.

Technically, you do get some on the Razr 2022, but its IP52 rating falls far short of what Samsung offers.

Decent water resistance is a standard feature on premium phones and with good reason – since the last thing you want is a little rain turning your purchase into an expensive paperweight.

    4. Wireless charging
While the Motorola Razr 2022 has reasonable battery life and charges quite quickly, it only supports wired charging, which is a shame in such a pricey handset, especially as its main rival – the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 – does offer wireless charging. So we’d like the Motorola Razr 2023 to offer it too.

    5. Smoother performance
There’s no shortage of power in the Motorola Razr 2022, yet in our review we found that the actual performance wasn’t always great, with some noticeable jumps and stutters at times.

Given the hardware and the price, that’s not really acceptable, so we’d like to see the Razr 2023 optimized to offer smooth performance consistently, as that will help it rank among the best foldable phones.

AMD Radeon RX 7600 Series Graphics Card "Rumored" Specifications

The AMD Navi 33 GPU which is likely going to power the Radeon RX 7600 series graphics cards would be the third chip of the RDNA 3 lineup and utilize a monolithic design.

    AMD-Radeon-RX-7600-RX-7700-RDNA-3-Custom-Graphics-Cards.png.webp

The Navi 33 GCD is expected to feature 2 Shader Engines and each Shader Engine has 2 Shader Arrays (2 per SE / 4 in total). This rounds up to 16 WGP's or 32 Compute Units for a total of 2048 cores which is the same core count as the Navi 23 GPU.

    • AMD Navi 33: 2048 Cores, 128-bit Bus, 32 MB Infinity Cache, 204mm2 GPU Die @6nm
    • AMD Navi 23: 2048 Cores, 128-bit Bus, 32 MB Infinity Cache, 237mm2 GPU Die @7nm

The GPU will come packaged with 32 MB of Infinity Cache, the same amount as the Navi 23 GPU, and across a 128-bit wide bus.  First introduced on laptops as the Radeon RX 7700 & RX 7600 series, the Navi 33 GPUs will be aiming at the budget segment with prices between the $250-$350 US range.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti "Rumored" Specifications:

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is expected to utilize the AD106-350-A1 GPU core, a cut-down version of the full AD106 graphics chip, and based on previous rumors, it should pack 34 SMs or 4352 CUDA cores, an 8 GB GDDR6 memory running at 18 Gbps across a 128-bit bus interface, providing the card with 288 GB/s of bandwidth. There's also 32 MB of L2 cache on board the GPU which is an 8x increase over the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti.

The graphics card is expected to utilize the PG190 SKU 361 PCB. Leaked PCB shots revealed that while the reference Founders Edition makes use of the standard 16-Pin 12VHPWR connector, the custom models will be free to use either standard 8-pin connectors or the newer 16-pin plugs. We have been told that it is much cheaper to just go with 8-pin connectors so that should be the target as AIBs want to maximize the production value of their designs. As for the TDP, the card will end up between 150-160W which is around 25% lower than its predecessor, the RTX 3060 Ti.

    • NVIDIA AD106: 4532 Cores, 128-bit Bus, 32 MB L2 Cache, 190mm2 GPU Die @5nm
    • NVIDIA GA106: 4684 Cores, 256-bit Bus, 4 MB L2 Cache, 392mm2 GPU Die @8nm

Both the AMD Radeon RX 7600 8 GB and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB graphics cards are now expected to launch by the end of this month around Computex.
