Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump drew outrage from Republicans and Democrats by mocking a dead Muslim soldier's mother who stood silently as her husband attacked him in a speech. Mr Trump suggested Ghazala Khan may not have been allowed to speak. Senior politicians said this was no way to talk about the mother of a hero. In an impassioned speech at last week's Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan said Mr Trump had sacrificed "nothing and no-one" for his country. His son Humayun Khan was killed by a car bomb in 2004 in Iraq at the age of 27. Mr Trump responded to the criticism in an interview with ABC's This Week. "If you look at his wife, she was standing there," he said, "She had nothing to say... Maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me." But former president Bill Clinton, the husband of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, said: "I cannot conceive how he can say that about a Gold Star mother." Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine said Mr Trump's remarks were inappropriate. "He was kind of trying to turn that into some kind of ridicule," he said, quoted by AP. "It just demonstrates again kind of a temperamental unfitness. If you don't have any more sense of empathy than that, then I'm not sure you can learn it." Some Republicans also rounded on their candidate. Ohio Governor John Kasich, a former rival to Mr Trump for the Republican nomination, tweeted: "There's only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honour and respect." Khizr Khan said in an interview on Saturday that Mr Trump was "devoid of feeling the pain of a mother who has sacrificed her son", the New York Times reported. Ghazala Khan said on Friday that she did not speak during her husband's speech to the Democratic National Convention because she was still overcome with grief and could not look at her son's photos without crying. Mr Trump's campaign issued a statement on Saturday in which he praised Mr Khan's son Humayun. "Captain Humayun Khan was a hero to our country and we should honour all who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe," he said. "The real problem here are the radical Islamic terrorists who killed him, and the efforts of these radicals to enter our country to do us further harm." But Mr Trump rejected Mr Khan's criticism. "While I feel deeply for the loss of his son, Mr Khan, who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things," he said. 'Tremendous success' In the ABC interview to be broadcast on Sunday, a transcript of which was released by the Trump campaign, Mr Trump was asked what sacrifices he had made. "I work very, very hard. I've created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures," he said. "...I've had tremendous success. I think I've done a lot." The remarks prompted ridicule on Twitter under the hashtag #TrumpSacrifices, with users listing such hardships as flying commercial class and playing on a municipal golf course. Khizr Khan, 65, told the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Thursday that his son had sacrificed his life to save those of his fellow soldiers. If it had been up to Mr Trump, he said, his son would not have been in America. Mr Khan asked if Mr Trump had "even read the United States Constitution", and offered to lend him his copy

Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes Manchester United have "something big on the go" after scoring a bicycle-kick on his first Red Devils appearance. Ibrahimovic, 34, met Antonio Valencia's cross with a typically athletic volley as United beat Galatasaray 5-2. The Turkish side then bossed the remainder of the half and led thanks to goals from Sinan Gumus and Bruma. But a much-changed United side turned the match around through Wayne Rooney (2), Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata. And Swedish striker Ibrahimovic believes the future is bright for the Red Devils, who continue to be linked with a £100m movefor Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba. "There is something big on the go, it's going to be very interesting this year," he said. "Let us say that if Pogba comes too, it's going to be very interesting. He added: "I'm going to help the team as much as I can and do what I'm good at, creating chances and scoring goals." Jose Mourinho used 22 players and will leave Gothenburg with as many questions as answers as he ponders his starting XI for next Sunday's Community Shield match which sees his FA Cup winners face champions Leicester at Wembley. Ibrahimovic led the line in the first half, with Rooney behind him and Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan either side. But half-time replacements Marcus Rashford, Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard looked far sharper and led to United's revival after a sleepy first 45 minutes. Rooney equalised with a clean volley from another Valencia cross before Rashford won a penalty with an individual run from near halfway, and captain Rooney converted. Valencia then made another goal as Fellaini drifted a header into the corner and Mata - who was sold by Mourinho at Chelsea - collected Michael Carrick's clever ball to slide in. World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger - one of nine players reportedly told that they can leave the club this week - did not feature. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho: "If the players were not in my plans I would not give them one single minute, I would not keep them in my squad. "The squad is very competitive, the squad is very important for the season. "We have 38 matches in the Premier League, we have the possibility of 15 matches in the Europa League, plus domestic cups, we are going to play 60 matches. So with 60 matches we cannot do it with 11 players. "To be in the squad you have to understand that the squad is more important than the individual, the club is more important than all of us, and to be in the squad you have to be ready for this, to play, not to play, play a lot, play less, play 90 minutes, play one minute, not be selected, everything is part of a squad life." Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Blind, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Mkhitaryan, Rooney, Martial, Ibrahimovic.Subs: Johnstone, Romero, Darmian, Jones, Rojo, Fellaini, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Young, Memphis, Rashford

One of two brothers arrested in Belgium in an anti-terror operation has been charged with attempting to commit "terrorist murder". Prosecutors said the 33-year-old man, named as Nourredine H, is also accused of being part of a terrorist group. He and his brother, named as Hamza H, were arrested on Friday after searches in the Mons area and the city of Liege. Hamza H was released on Saturday without charge. No weapons or explosives were found in the searches. Prosecutors did not name the organisation Nourredine H is accused of working for. Belgium has been on high alert since 32 people died in bombings at Brussels airport and a metro station in March. Many more people were injured in the attacks, which were claimed by so-called Islamic State. "Based on provisional results from the investigation, it appears that there were plans to carry out attacks in Belgium," the federal prosecutor's office said following the arrests. But the statement added that as yet no link had been found to the Brussels bombings. Security was boosted in the run-up to Belgium's national holiday on 21 July, amid fears of something similar to the lorry attack in the French city of Nice on 14 July, Bastille Day.

Efforts to bring the prestigious World Rally Championship in India will have whole-hearted support from Volkswagen Motorsport, team boss Jost Capito said here today. Capito, who is set to take over as Formula One McLaren team CEO soon, said India is a fast developing economy and it is only good for the sport to be there. “India is one of the upcoming and emergent markets and it’s really valid to have rallies in important markets and emergent markets. So we would be very supportive of having a rally in India. That’s for sure,” Capito told reporters on the sidelines of the Finland round of the WRC here. Asked if they will go an extra yard to make this happen, Capito’s reply was “Absolutely”. “We work with Volkswagen India, we support them in development of cars. They have a rally program. We are in regular contact with VW Motorsport India to support them and also to get program approved,” he said. FIA President Jean Todt had showed willingness to have a WRC round in India when he said that India has the potential to host an international rally. “It is sad that there is not a World Rally Championship round in India. It is a very big country. And contrary to road safety, it is good to have bad roads for rallying. India has the potential to host an international rally,” Todt had said last year. Motorsport’s po[CENSORED]rity in India shot up when the country hosted Formula One races in 2011, 2012 and 2013 but it did not return due to taxation issues even though the promoters, JPSI had a five-year contract with the FOM. When prodded about chances of supporting India’s premier rally drivers such as Gaurav Gill, Capito expressed helplessness. “It is difficult for us because we only have the WRC programme. The drivers have to come through (on their own). We are in contact with VW India. They see and give us information what the drivers are, so as soon as somebody come through, of course will get the chance,” he said. “As manufacturers we have three cars and we have to take three best (racers). We have to get best possible drivers. You have to be in position to win rallies, otherwise we can’t win the championships,” said Capito. Gill is competing in APRC for the last 10 years and in 2013 became the first Indian to win Asia-Pacific Rally Championship. Asked about the reasons to leave Volkswagen Motorsports and join McLaren, Capito made it clear that the decision was not in any way linked to any issue with VW. “It’s not linked to Volkswagen. I had a lot of freedom and support from the Board. The only reason is that you dream of this and when you have such opportunity, you can’t leave. And without the love and support of Volkswagen I would not have go into this position,” he said. Volkswagen’s technical Project leader Francois-Xavier Demaison said the team will continue making good strides in the absence of Capito. “The new boss will be as good as Jost. We will have same drivers and same cars,” he said. Capito said he can speak with authority on his plans for McLaren only after he joins the team and has all relevant information. “I first have to get into the team. You can’t see that from outside. This (WRC) is still a full time job. It would not make any sense to take any conclusions when you don’t have full information. First I have to get my feet into the water. Then take time, evaluate, what can be improved,” he said. “They are improving all the time, they are going in right direction.”

A maternity hospital has been attacked in the Syrian rebel-held province of Idlib, with the number of casualties so far unknown. The building suffered a direct hit earlier today and was extensively damaged and is now barely operational as a result, according to Save the Children, a charity which supports the hospital in the town of Kafar Takharim. Around 1,300 women and children are treated by the hospital each month, as it is the only maternity facility for about 70 miles, a spokesman for the charity said. There were 340 babies delivered there last month. Alun McDonald, Save the Children regional media manager, said: "There are initial reports of some casualties among patients and staff, although numbers are so far unconfirmed." The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air strikes also hit a civil defence building nearby. The group quoted local sources, saying that a jihadist was killed in the raid Group head Rami Abdel Rahman said: "It was him that was targeted. He went to visit his wife who had just given birth when the bombing happened." They did not say whether the strikes were carried out by the Syrian regime or the aircraft of its Russian allies. Further strikes in another part of the province's countryside killed at least five people and seriously injured more than 25, they added. In February, the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres published a report saying women and children made up 30-40% of casualties recorded in its Syrian facilities in 2015, proving civilian areas are consistently being hit.
