  1. MP Arvind Sawant says, 'Political turbulence is going on in Maharashtra, many MLAs defected and have gone to Assam. We have initiated legal action against them and notice has been served to 16 MLAs till now' Devdutta Kamath and Arvind Sawant briefing media about legal action to be taken against rebel MLAs in Mumbai. Pic/Atul Kamble Amid the political crisis in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant informed that the party has initiated legal action and served notices to concerned MLAs. Sawant said, "Political turbulence is going on in Maharashtra, many MLAs defected and have gone to Assam. We have initiated legal action against them and notice has been served to 16 MLAs till now." Advocate Devdutta Kamat, Shiv Sena's Senior Counsel said, "Proceedings have been initiated by Shiv Sena against 16 MLAs, under the provision in the Constitution which says that if a person gives up the membership of a party then he's eligible for disqualification." "There were several meetings that were called by Shiv Sena at different times, none of which were attended by them. Visiting BJP-ruled states, meeting BJP leaders, and attempting to topple government amounts to a violation by rebels," Advocate Devdutta Kamat said. Kamat said the concept of 2-3rd (to surpass anti-defection law) applies only if there is a merger. "Until the MLAs, don't merge with another party, disqualification applies. Till today there's no merger, they have voluntarily given up membership," Adv Devdutta Kamat said. Notably, the national executive meeting of the Shiv Sena on June 25 passed six resolutions giving absolute rights to Maharashtra Chief Minister and party president Uddhav Thackeray to take action against the rebels to bring the revolt within party under control. The advocate said that under the constitution, the deputy speaker has the power of the speaker in the latter's absence and can adjudicate on such matters. "No confidence motion was sent through an unauthorized email address by rebels," he said. In a jolt to the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, senior Shiv Sena Minister Eknath Shinde and other rebel MLAs revolted against the party on Monday night and camped in Surat. The rebel MLAs have shifted base to a hotel in Guwahati. Meanwhile, party MP Sanjay Raut on Thursday said the Sena is ready to quit the MVA government if the group of rebel legislators camping in Assam returns to Mumbai in 24 hours and discusses the issue with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. "You say you are real Shiv Sainiks and will not quit the party. We are ready to consider your demand provided you come back to Mumbai in 24 hours and discuss the issue with CM Uddhav Thackeray. Your demand will be considered positively. Don't write letters on Twitter and WhatsApp," said Raut. https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-political-crisis-shiv-sena-initiates-legal-action-against-rebels-serves-notices-to-16-mlas-23233179
  2. Meet sweet Ava, an 8-year-old American pit bull. She has been in and out of the shelters and has been abandoned a total of three times now. Two out of those three times, Ava was left in other states but is on her way back to Fresno. The center received a call on Monday that a dog named Ava had been found as a stray in Las Vegas by a local animal control agency. They were able to track down Valley Animal Center in Fresno from Ava's microchip. The center's supervisor Ruben Cantu and his wife took it among themselves to hit the road on Saturday at 5 a.m. to pick her up. Cantu tells FOX26, that Ava is very special to him and the shelter. He says it hurts to see that this has happened to her for the third time since 2016. The first time she was deserted in a field near Orange Cove where the shelter took her in was in 2016. The second time after being adopted, she was found abandoned in Pima, Arizona in 2019. During that time, the shelter raised funds to bring Ava back home using the hashtag #BringAvaHome. The goal for the no-kill non-profit animal shelter was $800 to cover the cost of the trip by car but ended up raising more than $1,300. She was adopted once again in September of 2020. "Since her adoption in 2020, the staff at Valley Animal Center moved on believing Ava had finally found her furever home. Today, Valley Animal Center is devastated," Valley Animal Center said. Again, this week, Ava was found in Las Vegas. Her previous owners told The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas they were moving again and had left Ava in good hands with family. According to the foundation, those family members, "cut Ava loose." She should be arriving in Fresno by 7 p.m. today and will be spending the night with her best bud Cantu and his fur animals. Caption: FULL STORY:{{ }}Ava abandoned for the third time and found in Las Vegas, she's on the way back to Fresno.{p}{/p} The staff at the center says at this time, they don't know what's next for Ava but should have a clear answer by next week. They say it's a hard decision to put Ava through something like this again since she's been in and out of the shelter. Cantu says he hopes someone in the team will adopt her so they know she is in safe hands. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fresno-dog-abandoned-for-the-3x-time-found-in-las-vegas-shes-on-the-way-back-to-fresno/ar-AAYRZeY?ocid=BingNewsSearch
  3. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews' yearly pay package will inch closer to half a million dollars as part of a wage rise for all state MPs. The annual base and additional salaries of Victorian parliament members, as well as their expense allowance, will lift 2.75 per cent from July 1 after a decision by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal. That is marginally higher than the 2.5 per cent raise MPs were awarded for this financial year. With the same increase across parliamentary office holder roles, the premier's annual pay package will rise to $464,918 including up to $58,435 in expense allowances. The latest ruling took into account recent pay increases of two to 2.75 per cent for Commonwealth, NSW and Queensland MPs, as well as other factors including Victoria's fiscal position and economic trends, projected national inflation of seven per cent and the 5.2 per cent minimum wage rise. 'On balance ... the tribunal has determined to increase the values of the basic salary for Victorian MPs, and the additional salaries and expense allowance for specified parliamentary office holders, by 2.75 per cent for 2022/23,' VIRT said. The 2.75 per cent rise will take the basic salary for a Victorian MP to $192,115, up about $5200 from 2021/22. Mr Andrews pointed out his government established VIRT under legislation passed in 2019 to independently manage MPs' pay. 'We don't set our own pay,' he told reporters on Sunday. He vowed to donate his pay rise, and more, to charity last year but said he would not pressure fellow Labor parliamentarians to follow suit, as they did in 2020. 'Cath and I donate to lots of different causes and we normally do that without any fanfare or any show ... as for everybody else they can make their own judgments,' Mr Andrews said. 'It was appropriate for us to make some sort of special arrangements these last couple of years because the state was doing it so tough.' His newly appointed deputy premier, Jacinta Allan, can claim as much as $395,757 in salary and expenses, if she remains in the post beyond the November state election. On the other side of the aisle, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy would be able to recoup up to $370,782 over the next 12 months - the same amount as a government minister. As well as a 2.75 per cent pay rise and general expense allowance, the tribunal has raised the amount MPs can claim for electorate and motor vehicle costs but not their maximum budget for international travel, commercial transport and parliamentary accommodation. The tribunal will further review MP allowances as part of a comprehensive assessment next year. https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/melbourne-news-dan-andrews-salary-closes-in-on-dollar500000-a-year-as-politicians-given-pay-increases/ar-AAYSuhq?ocid=BingNewsSearch

That’s $100 off the MSRP and $21 better than the last time we found a deal on this model. When we reviewed the Apple Watch SE, we called it “a very good mid-range smartwatch.” That’s a key point about this watch. You’re sacrificing some po[CENSORED]r features for a better price like the always-on display and the SpO2 monitor. The Apple Watch SE does have many of the key features you’d like to see in a smartwatch. You can use it to take calls, reply to texts, get notifications from other apps, track workouts, and keep track of your heart rate. It has irregular heart rhythm notifications and the Emergency SOS feature in case of a hard fall–a po[CENSORED]r feature for those who are at risk of injury. It’s also swimproof and it works with Apple Pay. This is a solid entry-level smartwatch from the world’s most po[CENSORED]r smartwatch maker. Just make sure you have an iPhone to go with it. https://www.pcworld.com/article/795046/795046.html
  7. The price of the Solana native crypto token SOL is rising nearly 10% this morning at $40.92 per coin following the presentation of a new Solana-powered Web3 smartphone that will allow users to connect to decentralized apps (dApps) within the ecosystem seamlessly. According to the developing team behind Solana Mobile, a new subsidiary of Solana Labs, Saga was the name given to this Android phone. The team expects to make pre-orders available in early 2023 and the cost will be around $1,000. The phone will feature some unique functionalities and features including a mobile wallet adapter, a seed vault for safely storing private keys and see phrases, and the Solana Pay app. Solana will manage to incorporate these features via a recently developed operating system called the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS), which is has been built to run alongside Android. The Software Development Kit (SDK) for the system has already been made available to developers. In addition, Solana (SOL) will be creating a dApp Store through which users will be able to easily download and still Web3 applications on their mobile phones. The company clarified that it will not be charging any platform fees and that it will co-exist with web2 marketplaces such as Google Play on Android. With the incorporation of this marketplace, it will be easier for dApps to obtain the required permissions to obtain data from users. This opens up a world of possibilities for the development of play-to-earn (P2E) games, shopping interfaces, payment solutions, and direct messaging platforms. More Details About the Solana Saga Phone Saga was designed and will be manufactured by a company called OSOM. The phone was previously marketed as the OSOM OV1 and has been repurposed to fit Solana’s demands. The phone features a 6.67-inch 120Hz OLED display and has 512GB of storage memory and 12GB of RAM. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip has been selected as the phone’s processor. Saga will also have a 50 MP front camera that comes with an added 12 MP ultra-wide shooter. The Solana Foundation Offers Grants to SMS Developers To accelerate the development of dApps within the Solana ecosystem, the firm has created a $10 million grant program for developers who would like to build on the SMS. “Everything is going mobile. In most countries, most of the access happens through mobile phones”, commented Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX and one of Solana’s most prominent backers shortly after the announcement was made. “The best solution for this is having the actual wallet built into your phone”, he added. In addition, Anatoly Yakovenko, the co-founder of Solana stated: “Saga sets a new standard for the web3 experience on mobile”. Alongside Yakovenko, his partner Raj Gokal stated that “this is the next chapter of this narrative and we believe opening up crypto to mobile will lead to greater adoption, better understanding, and more opportunities”. https://www.business2community.com/crypto-news/solana-surging-on-web3-phone-news-breakout-moment-02510652
  8. raphics workloads love fast memory. But how much difference can a desktop-oriented kit have on gaming performance with Intel's HD Graphics 4600 or AMD's Radeon HD 8670D? We test six 16 GB kits, two all the way up to DDR3-2400 to find out. Patriot Viper 3 DDR3-2400 Limited availability of Patriot’s top-rated PV316G240C0KRD kit forced us to look long and hard for a sub-$200 price, but a vendor that'd ship to the U.S. was eventually located in Canada. We’ve seen even lower prices in Asia and Europe, but those sources have since vanished. Standing 1.625” tall, each 8 GB module is detected as DDR3-1600 CAS 11 the first time you boot up. Its DDR3-2400 CAS 10-rated performance settings are easily configurable though XMP selection in firmware of most enthusiast-class motherboards. A 10% voltage increase is required to keep the modules running there, and that’s why non-enthusiast motherboards typically lack XMP. Some AMD-compatible motherboards also lack Intel’s XMP technology, but most have workarounds such as the D.O.C.P. mode found on our Asus test board. Anyone whose motherboard supports manual configuration can also use that option to configure these kits appropriately. Keep your receipt! Though Patriot’s lifetime warranty has earned the firm great respect with overclockers, language in its policy could allow the company to deny a claim to anyone who can’t authenticate their original purchase. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/memory-scaling-gaming-haswell-richland,3593-7.html
  9. The Awami League has always been the last hope of the country's people to achieve any kinds of their emancipation including geographical, political or social as well as to uphold their dignity in the global arena, said academicians. "Since its inception, AL remains as the only means of the country's people for achieving their political, geographical and economic freedom, and upholding their dignity in the global arena," Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Dr ASM Maksud Kamal told BSS on the AL's 73rd founding anniversary. He said under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, AL has been trying to earn economic freedom of the people through some mega projects such as the Padma Bridge, Karnaphuli Tunnel, nuclear power plant and satellite as well as to establish the dignity of the country in both regional and international arena. The AL is the only party which can work for all format of emancipation of the country by overcoming local and international conspiracies including USA and World Bank, he said. "The Padma Bridge is the bright example of Awami League's capacity," he said. Despite facing massive confrontation of different groups during 1971, Bangabandhu and Awami League made it possible to achieve geographical and political emancipation and uphold the country's dignity in global arena. After Bangabandhu's assassination, military rulers- Ziaur Rahman and Hussain Muhammad Ershad- did politics using religion disgracing four fundamental principles of the country which ultimately tarnished country's image in global arena. Following Zia's footprints, his widow Khaleda Zia also ran the state in the same way while their son Tarique Rahman gave an institutional shape to corruption, he said. "What they all do is nothing but establishing communal thoughts by attacking non-communal values as well as destroying country's fundamental principles," he said. Awami League had to overcome a number of challenges since the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as there have always been a collective anti-Awami League sentiment whether the party stays in power or not. He suggested AL to further strengthen genuine politicians in the party as well as cabinet. The party should never budge from its founding principles of achieving emancipation for Bengali nation, he concluded. DU Pro-VC (administration) Dr Mohammad Samad, said Bangabandhu led Bengali nation in a fearless struggle for liberation, breaking the shackles of a thousand years of slavery following the path of 1952 language movement. After the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975, the Bengali nation was derailed from its democratic path and fell into military dictatorship, he added. In post-1975 period, Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina took the helm of the party and filled the vacuum that was created through Bangabandhu's killing and she has been leading AL for four decades to fulfill the people's aspirations, he said. Today Bangladesh has become a role model of development and progress in the world, he further said. However, a vested quarter is intruding into Awami League in different ways and hatching conspiracies to tarnish the party's image, he said. Samad suggested the party should remain alert again intruders and opportunists and move forward to work for the people's welfare. https://www.bssnews.net/news/68462
  10. The former boss of an "animal hospital" has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to wild birds and a seal. Ray Allibone, 66, from the Isle of Sheppey was expected to face the allegations at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court today but failed to appear. The court heard that his wife, Brenda, had sent a letter saying her husband, who ran Swampy's Wildlife Rescue from their home in Diamond Court, Sheerness, was ill and unable to attend. Allibone faces four counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. He is also charged with failing to take "reasonable steps" to ensure that a seal was kept in a "suitable environment" and "providing an incorrect dosage of antibiotic treatment" contrary to section 9 and 32 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. He is further accused of keeping "multiple various animals and birds" in a "dirty and unhygienic state" which was an unsuitable environment and "failing to ensure that all animals had fresh, clean drinking water at all times". It is alleged that between December 28 and January 11 he failed to get a vet to treat an open wound on a sparrowhawk's wing and two similar cases for a kestrel's broken wing. Between January 9 and 11 it is said he failed to get a vet to inspect a broken wing of a chaffinch. The allegations are made by the RSPCA following a raid on his premises on January 19. Rebecca Jones is prosecuting. Chairman of the bench Shelley Hein adjourned the hearing until July 8. A request by Tahir Saeed, defending, to have the cases heard at Maidstone or Medway, which are nearer to Sheppey, was turned down as there were no free slots at those two courts. Allibone broke the news of the raid to his 7,000 followers on his Facebook page shortly afterwards. He wrote: "Unfortunately Swampy’s is closing down. This is mainly to do with my health issues but also because of an intervention from the RSPCA." https://www.kentonline.co.uk/sheerness/news/formal-animal-rescue-boss-on-cruelty-charges-269227/
  11. Oliver Dowden’s announcement of his support for Boris Johnson was a key moment in his leadership campaign, and his resignation is significant, no matter how hard No 10 might try to downplay it. Together with Rishi Sunak and Robert Jenrick, Mr Dowden was one of three rising stars of the party, first elected in 2015, who jointly declared their backing for Mr Johnson in the summer of 2019. It was front-page news at the time, not least because the three men were seen as embodying the moderate centre-ground of the party that Mr Johnson needed to win. Before they endorsed Mr Johnson, they had grilled him for an hour at Mr Jenrick’s house. The fact that Mr Johnson was prepared to put himself through such an interrogation is proof, if any were needed, of the importance to him of their support. Three years on, both Mr Dowden and Mr Jenrick have been and gone from the Cabinet, leaving only Mr Sunak, who has not been the most loyal of chancellors in recent months. Mr Dowden is a serious politician, a man who has served as culture secretary, Cabinet Office minister and paymaster general, and it was only last September that he was asked to take on the role of party chairman, replacing the ineffective and largely anonymous Amanda Milling. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/why-oliver-dowdens-resignation-is-bad-news-for-boris-johnson/ar-AAYPuaY?ocid=BingNewsSearch

  16. Developer Aspyr Media is also working on a Knights of the Old Republic remake on PS5 and PC. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II -- The Sith Lords, referred to as KOTOR II by fans, is considered by some to be the best Star Wars game of all time. The title, first released in 2004, saw a re-release on the Nintendo Switch earlier this month. The release was largely unchanged from the 18-year-old original. For gamers playing as Jedi 4,000 years before Episode I: The Phantom Menace, a bug makes the game unbeatable. The game-breaking crash comes after the Basilisk Crash cutscene, according to VGC. Twitter user Daniel Moore, who goes by @Moo_Resolutions, tweeted at Aspyr Media, the Austin-based studio responsible for the port. Moore said he reported the bug before it became a known issue and had been stuck for a week. While KOTOR II is a nearly two decade-old game, given the success of the Nintendo Switch, which currently sits at 107 million units sold, it's no surprise older titles are being ported to the platform. Some of that success can be pinned on former president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé. The Bronx native recently dished about his time at Nintendo, including overseeing the launches of the Nintendo DS and Wii and the challenges facing the release of the company's next console. Aspyr is currently working on a remake of the first Knights of the Old Republic for PS5 and PC. This remake will require largely rebuilding the game from the ground-up, greatly improving visuals in the process. https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/star-wars-kotor-ii-bug-on-switch-makes-game-unbeatable/
  17. The company formerly known as Facebook is going to spend $10 billion this year on research and development on virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. On Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off how much progress the social media company has made towards that goal by revealing many of the unfinished headset prototypes the company has built in its labs. "These prototypes, they're custom and bespoke models that we built in our lab, so they're not products that are ready to ship," Zuckerberg said. The company formerly known as Facebook is going to spend $10 billion this year on research and development on virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, including computerized glasses or headsets. On Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off how much progress the social media company has made towards that goal by revealing many of the unfinished headset prototypes the company has built in its labs. Zuckerberg has bet the future of the social networking company he founded on virtual reality, which immerses users in a computer-generated world, and augmented reality, which superimposes computer-generated objects over the real world. Last year, the company changed its name to Meta to highlight the company's new emphasis on the metaverse, a virtual world where Zuckerberg imagines people will spend increasing amounts of time — ideally, through advanced computerized glasses. If Zuckerberg succeeds in making head-worn computers mainstream, then Meta would have a new revenue stream of hardware sales, and it would control its own hardware platform, which would make it less susceptible to platform changes from other companies. For instance, on its last earnings call, Meta said that recent privacy changes Apple made to the iPhone could cost it $10 billion in foregone revenue this year, as it hampers the company's ability to target ads to precise audiences. The VR market is currently small and there are questions about how big it could get. Meta currently dominates headset sales, with its current $299 Quest 2 accounting 78% of all headset sales in 2021, according to an estimate from IDC. But there were only 11.2 million VR headsets sold total during the year — a far smaller number than smartphones or PCs. Meanwhile, investors are skeptical about Meta's pivot away from its core business of ads and apps. The stock has fallen over 53% so far in 2022 on fears of growing expenses, light growth forecasts, increased competition from TikTok, and effects from Apple's iPhone privacy change that hampered mobile ads. Monday's demonstration did little to calm those fears — Meta's stock closed down more than 4% Tuesday, despite a broader rally in tech stocks. (U.S. markets were closed Monday for the Juneteenth holiday observation.) What Zuckerberg showed Meta is developing next-generation virtual reality displays designed to provide a realistic enough experience for users to feel like they're in the same room with other virtual people, Zuckerberg said during his demonstration. Current displays have low resolution, display distortion artifacts, and can't be worn for long periods of time. "It's not going to be that long before we can create scenes in perfect fidelity," Zuckerberg said on a call with media about the company's virtual reality efforts. "Only instead of looking at them on a screen, you'll feel like you're there." "The issue today is that the vividness of screens that we have now compared to what your eye sees in the physical world is off by an order of magnitude or more," Zuckerberg said. For the past few years Meta has regularly shown its progress working on virtual reality headsets and augmented reality glasses to partners and the press, to encourage investors to regard the project as worthwhile, and to help recruit highly-paid developers and executives with experience in VR and AR. In these roundtable presentations, Meta regularly shows off unfinished prototypes for use in research, which is unusual in consumer electronics. Gadget companies like to complete products and figure out how they are going to be manufactured before talking about them with the press. For example, Apple, which is working on headsets of its own, never shows off prototypes. "These prototypes, they're custom and bespoke models that we built in our lab, so they're not products that are ready to ship," Zuckerberg said. Here were the prototypes he showed: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/mark-zuckerberg-showed-these-prototype-headsets-to-build-support-for-his-2410-billion-metaverse-bet/ar-AAYHUdE?ocid=BingNewsSearch
  18. eFraud Services, the leading provider of financial fraud detection software, today announced the launch of its flagship product eFraud Converter. eFraud Converter is an AI-driven, SaaS-based solution solving the problem of the time-consuming and labor-intensive process of analyzing bank statements. eFraud Converter uses state-of-the-art AI technology to convert pdf images of bank statements into Excel without manual intervention. Once the conversion is complete, users review and correct suspected errors. This is a crucial step because investigators must attest to the accuracy of their reports when testifying in court. eFraud Converter solves the problem for government agencies and businesses that still rely on paper bank statements to uncover fraudulent activity. These include Law Enforcement, Federal, State and Local Governments, Forensic Accountants, Valuation Specialists and Attorneys. Currently, detectives and analysts manually type bank statements into Excel, draining valuable time that should be spent conducting investigations. As an alternative, agencies use software that relies on templates or gridding, manual processes that are labor-intensive. eFraud Converter replaces these processes with Artificial Intelligence. Barbara Steinberg, CEO, states, "We reduce the time it takes to analyze bank statements from weeks and months to minutes and hours. With our 'Pay for What You Use' pricing model, any entity can afford to use our application. Since it is browser-based, there is no limit to the number of users who can work concurrently." 19. Calling all hardcore gamers! It’s a good day to pick-up a solid graphics card for 4K and 1440p gaming. Newegg is selling the Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Gaming OC 16G for $720. That’s $350 off and a great price for this graphics card, especially as we exit the graphics card crypto nightmare of the last few years. To get today’s special price, you need to use the promo code VGAGBET249 plus the $100 mail-in rebate after purchase. The upfront the price will be $820. When we reviewed the 6900 XT, we gave it 3.5 stars. That score may sound iffy, but it was due to the value, especially when compared to competing cards such as Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3090 and the Radeon RX 6800 XT. Those value concerns are less of an issue today with this seriously awesome deal. “This is a fantastic graphics card, offering a premium metal-clad design, quiet acoustics, and the second-best average gaming performance in the world,” we said. There are a couple of issues that might make this card a no-go for some. Ray tracing is limited to 1440p, for example. At the time of the review, the 6900 XT tended to get hotter than other graphics cards in its class. Still, if those aren’t objectionable issues for you, then this is an excellent deal. https://www.pcworld.com/article/792956/amds-radeon-rx-6900-xt-4k-graphics-card-is-an-awesome-620-for-a-limited-time.html
  20. Dan McKee signed three gun-control bills –including one that will prohibit the possession of gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition – into law on Tuesday afternoon, in a room packed with local and national advocates. The new law limiting magazine size gives current owners of high-capacity magazines six months to modify them, surrender them to police or transfer them to people in states where they are legal. After that, anyone still in possession of an outlawed magazine could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to $5,000. he other measures will raise the age to buy a firearm or ammunition from 18 to 21, and prohibit people from openly carrying loaded rifles and shotguns in public. Among those who attended the State House signing ceremony was Shannon Watts, founder of the gun-control advocacy group Moms Demand Action. She lauded the efforts of the Rhodw Island lawmakers who sheperded the bills to this point.and "on top of it all... went toe to toe with gun extremists." "But as I always say: 'don't mess with a mom'," she said to cheers from the standing room only crowd in the State Room. . ""Elected officials are finally realizing it is more a political liability to oppose gun-safety legislation than to support it, and that's because gunp-safety isn't just good policy, it is good politics. "What you have done in Rhode Island will save so many lives." As she and then McKee and the sponsors of the three bills spoke, less than a dozen protesters shouted their disapproval up from the rotunda, with one carrying a sign that said: "We will not comply." The passage by House and Senate majorities last week followed a number of recent instances of gun violence across the country, including mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, as well as frequent reports of gun violence in Rhode Island. Moms Demand Action is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization that says it has "over eight million supporters ... more than 375,000 donors ... [and a] chapter in every state." Pro-gun advocates have already vowed to file a legal challenge soon after the new laws are signed. Lawyers at a local firm laid out the potential grounds for the legal challenge in a letter to lawmakers that described the newly approved ban on high-capacity magazines, without compensation, as an illegal "taking" under the U.S. Constitution. The warning letter from Providence-based Kelly, Souza, & Parmenter P.C. did not, however, deter majorities in the House and Senate from approving the legislation that would make Rhode Island the 11th state plus the District of Columbia to place a size limit on firearm magazines. And when asked about the likelihood of a legal challenge, a spokesman for Attorney General Peter Neronha told The Journal: "Should the state be sued here, we are confident we will be able to defend this law." On Tuesday, R.I. Rifle and Revolver Association Lobbyist Brenda Jacob reiterated her group's objections to the legislation that will "make law-abiding citizens felons within the next 180 days. "The political maneuvering that occurred to get these bills passed and the unprecedented shift away from the committee process should raise alarm bells for all Rhode Islanders." "We will remember in November," she wrote in an email. "The voice of the people will not continue to be ignored. Watts was here in 2019. She joined then-Gov. Gina Raimondo, Neronha and then-Central Falls Mayor James Diossa at a news conference to urge passage of a packet of “common-sense gun bills” that were not moving, despite a significant level of support in the Senate. Among them: a proposed assault weapons ban, which has still not passed, and the 10-round limit on high-capacity magazines that did not pass until last week. The hours-long House Judiciary hearing on gun-legislation that year included a plea from Erica Keuter of East Greenwich, who survived the massacre by a lone gunman that left 58 concert-goers dead and hundreds more injured in Las Vegas in October 2017. “I heard screaming and crying, smelled gun powder and saw the carnage that one person can do with these firearms, all of which were legally owned,’’ she told the lawmakers. “If you take one thing away from my experience, it’s that gun violence can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone.” https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/mckee-signs-3-gun-control-bills-into-law/ar-AAYHZBH?ocid=BingNewsSearch
  21. AWestmoreland County couple is facing multiple charges of animal cruelty after police said 61 animals were removed from their Monessen home in deplorable conditions. Monessen police said they were called to the home of Ryan and Charlotte Fiem on Schoonmaker Avenue. According to a criminal complaint, officers found cats dogs and chickens on the property, many of them in small coups and cages and visibly emaciated. "They needed help and we're lucky we were able to get in there fast and get everybody out," Jen Johnson, President of Ninth Life Rescue Center, said. The complaint said one of the cats died before they could be treated. Johnson said one cat lost both eyes and three others lost one eye. All of the cats are also being treated for ringworm. The other animals were taken to All But Furgotten. Pittsburgh's Action News 4 spoke with Charlotte Fiem Thursday. She claims she was the one who initially contacted a neighbor and sought help for the animals. "Next thing I know, they're coming here with police and code officers and treating us like we're dirty people and cruel to animals," Fiem said. "I've never hurt animals in my life. I love them." Fiem said she became overwhelmed with the number of animals, and admitted the kittens needed veterinary care. She claimed she called multiple shelters in recent years, but no one was able to help her. The Fiems have a preliminary hearing scheduled for July. Ninth Life Rescue took in 32 of the cats that were recovered. Johnson estimated it will cost thousands to treat them. The non-profit organization is seeking donations to help cover the costs of treatment and food. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/couple-faces-charges-after-police-say-more-than-60-animals-were-found-in-deplorable-conditions/ar-AAYxsFC?ocid=BingNewsSearch
