  1. Germany’s road traffic agency said it was recalling Tesla models Y and 3 because of a fault in the automatic emergency call system that affects 59,000 vehicles globally. The KBA watchdog said on its website dated June 29 that a software flaw was causing a breakdown of the eCall, which is designed to automatically contact emergency responders in the event of a serious accident. German regional broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, which serves the region that is home to Tesla’s German model Y and battery production site near Berlin, first reported the recall yesterday. KBA said 59,129 vehicles were affected globally but did not specify how many of those were registered in Germany. The software glitch is an added headache for chief executive officer Elon Musk after Tesla yesterday said it delivered 17.9% fewer electric vehicles in the second quarter from the previous quarter, as China’s Covid 19-related shutdown disrupted its production and supply chain. Musk said last month that Tesla’s new factories in Texas and Berlin are “losing billions of dollars” as they struggle to increase production because of a shortage of batteries and Chinese port issues. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) early in June upgraded its probe into 830,000 Tesla vehicles with the advanced driver assistance system autopilot, a required step before it could seek a recall. https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/business/2022/07/03/german-agency-says-59000-teslas-have-software-glitch/
  2. Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Google Chromecast all use ACR, or automatic content recognition, to track shows and movies you watch. Here's how opt out. Streaming devices from Roku, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire Stick and Apple TV are an easy and cheap way to watch content from your favorite streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu and HBO Max. Unfortunately, plugging in one of these small sticks or boxes into your TV comes with a downside: Their software platforms are often watching what you watch and track it from behind the scenes. Every major smart TV streaming platform captures your viewing data. Makers of software and hardware -- from your new streaming stick to your TV itself -- use that data to "improve" the products and services they offer, by tailoring show recommendations and the ads they show you, for example. While that's potentially frustrating, ads do help keep the price down when you're buying a new streaming stick. One tool for tracking is called automatic content recognition, which is software that recognizes the images on your TV. ACR works regardless of whether the images come through an app or an HDMI port like a cable box, Xbox or PlayStation. The good news is that you can turn it off. While we've previously covered this for the TVs themselves, for this story we checked out all of the latest software on streaming devices from Amazon, Roku, Google and Apple. Here's what we found and what you can do about it on your respective new streaming players. https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/protect-your-privacy-by-changing-these-setting-on-your-roku-and-other-streaming-devices/
  3. Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the people get annoyed with BNP for different reasons as the party doesn't do politics over public issues. "BNP doesn't speak for people. They only talk about Khaleda Zia's health condition and Tarique Rahman's punishment. They hurl petrol bombs on people. As a politician I get hurt witnessing such acts of BNP," he said. Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary, said this while replying to journalists at his ministry's meeting room at the Secretariat here. About BNP's call for massive movement after Eid, he said: "We have been hearing that BNP will wage movement after Eid, winter, examination and monsoon for the last 13 years. At first it should be examined whether the Eid is upcoming Eid or anything else". Actually BNP is making itself ridiculous by commenting in that way and that is why the people never respond to their call for movement, he said. Earlier, the minister joined a discussion with Bangladesh Editors Forum. Forum's adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said media will have to go ahead keeping intact the principles and ethics of journalism. Convener of the forum Rafiqul Islam Ratan said according to Printing Presses and Publications Act, there is no scope for online version of newspapers or news portals to broadcast talk-show or news bulletin. The Forum leaders handed over a 10-point demand written in a letter to the minister. The demands included stopping providing government advertisement and supplement to irregular so-called newspapers and scrapping media inclusion of those newspapers, paying outstanding advertisement bills to newspapers, reorganizing the system to specify circulation of newspapers, not giving editorial charge to non-professional journalists, providing VIP status to Editors Forum members and giving the power to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to include journalists in different committees and issuing declaration in newspapers. Hasan thanked the Forum for agreeing with Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) that it is not the work of online news portals or online versions of newspapers to broadcast talk-show or news bulletin as per law. "It will help us talk with others and the matter could be presented easily. Small video clips can be uploaded with online reports but news bulletin or talk-show cannot be broadcast as per law," he said. The minister said Press Council has already taken initiative over the issues placed by the Editors Forum. He said an initiative has been taken to create a database of working journalists. Upon completion of the database, it will be understood who are in the list of journalists or not, he said. It will be tough for non-journalists to give their identity as journalists, he said. Hasan gave assurance of making his utmost sincere efforts in paying the due advertisement bills to newspapers. "I won't say that I will be able to resolve all issues but there is no lack of sincerity to this end. With your cooperation, many issues have already been resolved and hopefully the rest of those will also resolve," he said. Editors Forum Member Secretary Ahmed Talukder and Advisers Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, Sharif Sahabuddin, Belayet Hossain and Members Dulal Ahmed Chowdhury, Mir Maniruzzaman, Mafizur Rahman Khan Babu, Rimon Mahfuz, Nazmul Alam Toufiq and Jagadish Chandra Sarker joined the meeting, among others. https://www.bssnews.net/news/70093
  4. In the leafy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey lies a very different kind of farm: the astonishing Funny Farm, a not-for-profit animal sanctuary open to the public two days a week, created by New Jersey's own Doctor Doolittle, Laurie Zaleski. Every animal here is a rescue – abused, abandoned, disabled – and Zaleski has healed and protected more than 600 animals over the last 20 years, from retired racehorses to raucous roosters. "We have 115 roosters," she said. And it sounded like it! Correspondent Lesley Stahl asked, "For those people who have never been here, never even heard of the Funny Farm, how would you describe it?" "I say Heaven on Earth, especially for animals," Zaleski replied. "And for people, because when you walk through the gates, you can feel the inner peace and harmony, because they all get along here. "My mother had the original Funny Farm, and she said it's full of animals and fit for lunatics!" laughed Zaleski. As she writes in her book, "Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals" (Macmillan), there are lessons here for our polarized, at-each-others-throat society, because the creatures on the Funny Farm live in harmony, no matter how different they are. It's not quite the Biblical tale of the lion lying down with the lamb, but as friendships go, this bond between Emily the emu and a goose named Airplane (because of her wounded wings) is pretty jaw-dropping. 5. Police in Copenhagen arrested a person in connection with a shooting at a shopping mall on Sunday in which "several people" were shot, officials announced on Twitter. Police have not yet confirmed if there were any fatalities or how many people were shot. Copenhagen police first tweeted at about 12:30 pm EST on Sunday that they were present "in large numbers" at Fields shopping mall, where they had received reports of shootings. About 15 minutes later, police tweeted that "several people" had been shot and urged people inside to await police and others not on site to stay away from the mall. An unverified video on social media appeared to show people running and screaming inside the mall as gunshots rang out. A large police presence was on hand at Fields, along with fire department vehicles, according to the Associated Press, which adds that witnesses said people inside the mall were crying and hiding in shops as they awaited news of what was going on. Police urged anyone who had been at the mall to contact their relatives. And at 1:48 p.m. EST, police tweeted that they were still "massively present" on site and "working to secure the entire building." "If you are still in Fields, stay where you are and wait for the police," police tweeted, according to Google Translate. Some noted on social media that the mall is near the Royal Arena, where Harry Styles is expected to perform a concert tonight that will proceed as planned, according to an update posted by the entertainment company Live Nation. "Our security staff are in close dialogue with the police who are in control of the situation," the update reads. "The police have also given the go ahead for the concert to proceed as planned. We’re showing the audience into the arena as quickly and quietly as possible, and there are already over half of the audience seated. We wish you all a good concert." https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/danish-police-arrest-one-in-connection-with-shooting-at-copenhagen-mall/ar-AAZ9DbJ

  10. The highly acclaimed Far Cry 5 is arriving on Game Pass on Friday, July 1, Microsoft has revealed. In its latest "Coming to Game Pass" update, Xbox gave a rundown of the new Game Pass titles arriving in the rest of June as well as at the start of next month. The Shadowrun Trilogy (cloud and console) and Total War: Three Kingdoms (PC) launched on the subscription service today, with FIFA 22 (console and PC) and martial arts battle royale Naraka: Bladepoint arriving on Thursday, June 23. The big headliner is Far Cry 5, which will be the most recent game in Ubisoft's prolific series to be available on Game Pass. And the good news is that it isn't exclusive to any one platform - all Game Pass subscribers will be able to play Far Cry 5 on the cloud, console, and PC when it gets added on July 1. In case you haven't played it, our 4/5-star review from 2018 might be of some encouragement. We heaped praise on the more focused gunplay, highly explorable locales, and dynamic side missions. "Far Cry 5 is a continuation of everything you remember about the series, but an instalment that’s taken a good look at itself, and what it does, to work out the best possible way of doing it," reads the review. "The compact, more streamlined design never feels small and instead comes across as more achievable and event filled." https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/gaming/far-cry-5-is-coming-to-game-pass-in-july/ar-AAYIIvZ?ocid=BingNewsSearch
  11. One of Amazon's latest daily deals knocks half off a powerful Shark robot vacuum. The Shark AV1010AE robot vacuum with clean base is down to $300 today only, which is 50 percent less than its usual rate and the best price we've seen it. It shares many features with the Shark machine that made it onto our list of best robot vacuums, including home mapping, Alexa and Google voice control and the convenience of a clean base. We've been generally impressed with Shark's robot vacuums, with both high-end and affordable models earning spots in our guides. The AV1010AE is a mid-tier machine featuring improved carpet cleaning with multi-surface brush rolls, suction that's powerful enough to capture pet hair along with dirt and debris and row-by-row cleaning. It'll also map out your home as it cleans so you can then send the machine to specific rooms for more targeted cleaning. Shark's robot vacuum connects to WiFi so you can control it via its companion mobile app. Not only can you start and stop cleaning jobs from there, but you can also set schedules so the machine cleans routinely on certain days and times. If the robo-vac starts to run out of juice before it's done cleaning, its Recharge and Resume feature will force the machine back to its base to power up, and once it has a sufficient amount of battery power, it'll automatically pick up where it left off. And you won't have to tend to the vacuum every job thanks to the included clean base it'll empty its dustbin into the clean base after its done cleaning, so you'll only have to empty the base once every 45 days or so. We also appreciate that Shark's base is bagless, so you're not forced to buy proprietary garbage bags for it. The clean base is a big perk of this sale as it's pretty rare to find a robot vacuum that comes with one for only $300. As a mid-tier device, the AV1010AE doesn't have all of the features we tested out on the model that made it into our best robot vacuums guide (RV2502AE). The AV1010AE doesn't have AI laser vision, so it won't be as good at avoiding obstacles as other models, and lacks self-cleaning brush rolls as well as PowerFin Technology. The latter refers to flexible silicon fins found on some Shark machines that help get deeper into carpets and pick up more hair. If you're willing to skip those advanced features, you'll still get a solid robot vacuum in the Shark AV1010AE without spending too much money. https://www.engadget.com/sharks-wifi-robot-vacuum-with-clean-base-is-half-off-today-only-130300519.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmluZy5jb20v&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAL0PE9BD5LwZDFZzsBdMOLxTsXWMiM6nZ91c6jgFFF3mvvnVSk3crc-clAKOX13mSQZ7bp_MwXEqAxwatwR7G9pzdVDRVWgPAZhHFmaTnM9oHSXkWsztlQjvvfjr9lZGTlBS0oIUHZYByoKVq0Kc7FAKz2gM54lR19g08lTQjn1t
  12. A Leamington Spa-based reseller of 3D design software has been acquired by a US group as part of a deal which provides an exit for mid-market private equity firm LDC. Solid Solutions, an independent provider of SOLIDWORKS, a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) package, has been snapped up by US-based technology and business services partner for designers, engineers and manufacturers, TriMech. Founded in 1998, Solid Solutions supports a community of more than 16,000 customers across the UK and Ireland, which includes product designers, mechanical engineers, manufacturers, and educational institutions. LDC backed the company's management team, led by chief executive and founder Alan Sampson, CTO Simon Turner and CSO Kathy Sampson in 2020. Since then, the private equity firm helped Solid Solutions to acquire Design Rule and Desktop Engineering in 2021. Over the past two years, Solid Solutions has grown revenues by more than 35 per cent, up to £73m in its latest financial year. Today, the business employs more than 250 people. Rob Schofield, partner at LDC, said: "Our partnership with Solid Solutions is a fantastic example of how private equity investment can support a founder-owned family business to realise its growth plans. Its success is down to the hard work of the management team and its employees. "This transaction finds a good home for the business and represents an excellent outcome for everyone at Solid Solutions. We wish them all the best for the future." The transaction was led by LDC's West Midlands team. TriMech is a portfolio company of Sentinel Capital Partners, a US private equity firm that invests in companies with EBITDA of up to $80m. As part of the transaction, Sampson will be appointed president of TriMech's UK and European business and the wider management team will remain in place. Sampson added: "Rob and the rest of the team at LDC fully supported our strategy to grow our business. They encouraged us to be bold with our plans, and to act quickly and efficiently for the benefit of our customers. We could not have asked for a more supportive and engaging partner." LDC and Solid Solutions were advised by Alantra (corporate finance) and Gowling WLG (legal). https://www.insidermedia.com/news/midlands/ldc-exits-leamington-software-reseller
  13. Although this year's Google developer conference was well over a month ago, today marks the tenth anniversary of I/O 2012, a landmark event for the company in both good and bad. While we've lamented the loss of joy and whimsy from recent Google events, this particular occasion was anything but. Not only did the company announce some of its most and least loved products on stage within the span of a couple of hours, but it also took to the skies in one of the most daring and infamous stunts in I/O history. Call this event "The Good, the Bad, and the Daring," because of everything that happened on stage ten years ago, the three biggest moments fall into those categories. Let's start with the daring, because it's one of the most insane things to ever occur on stage during I/O. Ninety minutes into the event, while Vic Gundotra then-Senior Vice President of Engineering was on stage, Sergey Brin came running out, interrupting a fairly dull presentation on Google+ events with some news. Brin is wearing Google Glass, a gadget announced only two months prior and still shrouded in mystery. As Brin calls his demo "time-sensitive," it becomes obvious something special is about to happen, a feeling that only multiplies as he warns, "this can go wrong in about five hundred different ways." The video screen behind the stage cuts to a live feed of San Francisco, shot from above and showing off a blimp hovering over the city skyline. As Brin tells the audience, he's there to show off Glass, and the specific model he wants to demo has been lent to a friend who happens to be a mile above the show floor. As the camera cuts to inside the aircraft, it becomes obvious we're watching history. Google is about to show a live recording over Hangouts of several Glass-equipped skydivers jumping into the air. Ten years later, it's hard to call the picture quality glorious, and some of the technical issues with broadcasting between the two locations are glaring. Still, it's a wonderful moment to watch in fact, I won't even describe what happens next in any further detail. Instead, just check out the video below. Sergey walks onto stage at about 1:27:45, though I've embedded the actual jump. In case our embed fails, the jump happens at 1:32:27. The skydivers make their way to Moscone Convention Center, the crowd cheering as their chutes fly open. After just a couple of minutes, the group lands on top of the building, the video feed cutting to a sharper image of everyone celebrating. It was, truly, an absolutely insane feat accomplished by Google, something no one ever would've expected from a developer conference, and it made Glass into a gadget nearly everyone wanted. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/google-i-o-2012-set-a-high-water-mark-for-innovative-hardware-that-has-yet-to-be-approached-again/ar-AAYVS17?ocid=BingNewsSearch
  14. Cash-strapped Sri Lanka announced a two-week halt to all fuel sales except for essential services starting Monday and called for a partial shutdown as its unprecedented economic crisis deepened. The South Asian nation is facing its worst economic meltdown since gaining independence from Britain in 1948, and has been unable to finance even the imports of essentials since late last year. As fuel reserves hit rock bottom with supplies barely enough for just one more day, government spokesman Bandula Gunawardana said the sales ban was to save petrol and diesel for emergencies. He urged the private sector to let employees work from home as public transport ground to a halt. "From midnight today, no fuel will be sold except for essential services like the health sector, because we want to conserve the little reserves we have," Gunawardana said in a pre-recorded statement. He apologised to consumers for the shortages: "We regret the inconvenience caused to the people." -Electricity shock- The sudden fuel ban came as the loss-making state-run electricity monopoly asked for a massive price increase for its poorest customers. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) lost 65 billion rupees ($185 million) in the first quarter and sought a nearly tenfold price hike for the heavily-subsided smallest power consumers, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) said. Currently, anyone using less than 30 kilowatts a month pays a flat 54.27 rupees ($0.15), which the CEB sought to raise to 507.65 rupees ($1.44). "A majority of the domestic consumers will not be able to afford this type of steep increase," PUCSL chairman Janaka Ratnayake told reporters in Colombo. "Hence we proposed a direct subsidy from the Treasury to keep the increase to less than half of what they have asked." As part of measures to ease the forex crisis that led to the energy crunch, the CEB will be allowed to charge users who earn foreign currency, such as exporters, in dollars. The move is aimed at helping the electricity utility collect dollars to finance imports of oil and spare parts it desperately needs, but is unable to secure because of the country's forex crisis. The country is also facing record high inflation and lengthy power blackouts, all of which have contributed to months of protests -- sometimes violent -- calling on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down. Last week, all government schools were shut down and state institutions operated with skeleton staff to reduce commuting and preserve oil. The state sector shutdown was meant to end this week, but it is now being extended till July 10, when Gunawardana promised to restore fuel supplies. - Broken promise - On Sunday, the government promised it will implement a token system to ration distribution of limited fuel stocks, but it failed to take off. There have been long queues outside the few pumping stations which still had supplies. Sri Lanka is seeking cheap oil from Russia and Qatar. Earlier this month, the United Nations launched an emergency response to the island's unprecedented economic crisis, feeding thousands of pregnant women who were facing food shortages. Four out of five people in Sri Lanka have started skipping meals as they cannot afford to eat, the UN has said, warning of a looming "dire humanitarian crisis" with millions in need of aid. Sri Lanka defaulted on its $51 billion foreign debt in April, and is in talks with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout. https://www.daily-sun.com/post/629063/Sri-Lanka-suspends-fuel-sales-as-economic-crisis-worsens

The pilot will help develop a roadmap for a national project to prevent future outbreaks of zoonotic disease by using "better response mechanism and management while incorporating global best practices", the press release added. Atul Chaturvedi, Secretary, DAHD, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying will be launching the pilot project in Bengaluru. "DAHD in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as implementation partner is implementing the One-Health Framework undertaking project in the states of Karnataka and Uttarakhand," the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying said. "DAHD would develop a national One Health roadmap based on the learnings of this initiative which in turn would help to prevent the future zoonotic disease outbreaks, equipped with better response mechanism and management while incorporating global best practices. Capacity building plan for Karnataka and One Health brochure (Kannada) will be unveiled during the event," it said. https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/other/department-of-animal-husbandry-to-launch-e2-80-98one-health-pilot-project-today-in-bengaluru/ar-AAYWHzr?ocid=BingNewsSearch
  16. ECB president gives speech at annual retreat in Portugal Meeting takes place amid fears over euro-zone debt, recession European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde affirmed plans for an initial quarter-point increase in interest rates in July but said policy makers are ready to step up action to tackle record inflation if warranted. Speaking at the ECB’s annual retreat in Sintra, Portugal, Lagarde offered reassurances that a new anti-crisis instrument yet to be announced won’t stand in the way of tackling the fastest surge in consumer prices since the euro was introduced. Her remarks underline the ECB’s base case for normalizing monetary policy as some officials float the idea of moving more aggressively. Governing Council member Martins Kazaks said earlier Tuesday that “front-loading” hikes, including a possible larger move next month, could be reasonable. Traders brought forward bets on rate increases, but only see a 25% chance of a half-point hike in July. “There are clearly conditions in which gradualism would not be appropriate,” Lagarde said. “If, for example, we were to see higher inflation threatening to de-anchor inflation expectations, or signs of a more permanent loss of economic potential that limits resource availability, we would need to withdraw accommodation more promptly.” ECB policy makers are gathering at a tumultuous time. As they gear up to raise rates for the first time in a decade, concerns are swirling about their ability to simultaneously keep debt-market jitters under control. Meanwhile, there are growing fears that a possible cutoff in Russian energy supplies would trigger a recession. Officials held an emergency meeting this month after Italian bond yields jumped, deciding to accelerate work on a new tool to address such turmoil. It’s set to be presented in the coming weeks and will probably consist of more targeted bond-buying, though purchases may be offset to avoid undermining efforts to fight inflation. Pushing back against fears that it could amount to direct financing of governments, Lagarde said the new instrument will have to contain safeguards to preserve sound fiscal policy among member states. She said it will allow rates to rise “as far as necessary,” complementing efforts to stabilize inflation at the 2% target. “We will ensure that the orderly transmission of our policy stance throughout the euro area is preserved,” Lagarde said. “We will address every obstacle that may pose a threat to our price-stability mandate.” Consumer-price growth is running at more than 8%, driven to large extent by energy and food as a result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Economists expect data Friday to show another acceleration in June, to 8.5%. At their last meeting, policy makers conceded that elevated inflation poses a “major challenge,” and laid out a plan to hike rates by 25 basis points next month. They also signaled a move of double that magnitude may follow in September, unless the outlook for prices eases. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-06-28/lagarde-vows-nimble-ecb-policy-as-july-rate-hike-plan-proceeds

  19. OnePlus, according to insider reports, has scheduled the announcement of a large number of new products for the third quarter of this year, including smartphones and various wearable gadgets. In particular, already in July, according to available information, the presentation of the OnePlus 10T smartphone, will take place. This device has the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.7-inch FHD + AMOLED display; with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a 4800 mAh battery with support for 150 W charging. A 32-megapixel selfie camera will supposedly be located in front, and a triple rear camera will combine 50, 16 and 2 MP sensors. The operating system mentioned is OxygenOS 12 based on Android 12. ONEPLUS IS PREPARING SMARTWATCHES, HEADPHONES AND A FITNESS TRACKER Two models of fully wireless submersible headphones (TWS) are also rumored to be released. One of them will be branded Nord, while the more premium version will be branded OnePlus. Finally, we are talking about the preparation of the OnePlus Watch 2 smartwatch and the OnePlus Band 2 physical activity tracker. Unfortunately, there is no information about the technical characteristics of these gadgets yet. The source has recently shared new details about the upcoming OnePlus 10T smartphone. On the one hand, it seems to be a slightly more affordable version of the flagship OnePlus 10 Pro; and on the other hand, the 10T will surpass the current flagship in a number of parameters. So, for example, the hardware basis of OnePlus 10T will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. Although it is slightly, it is still faster than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The second point is related to the increased charging speed of OnePlus 10T; by supporting 150 W power versus 80W for the 10 Pro. The OnePlus 10T will launch in India at the end of July, with an estimated cost of $640. The amount of RAM will be 12 GB and 256 GB of flash memory. https://www.gizchina.com/2022/06/25/oneplus-is-preparing-new-wearable-devices-for-launch/

  21. As mentioned on the official support page, Microsoft will end support for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Find more details about the announcement here. After bidding a farewell to Internet Explorer, Microsoft is planning to end support for Windows 8.1. A couple of days ago, the Redmond-based tech giant published a support page, announcing the end of support for Windows 8.1. Additionally, the company also mentioned ways in which users should upgrade their Microsoft 365 apps to enjoy continued services. Keep reading to know more about Windows 8.1 end of support date. Windows 8.1 support ends in January 2023 As mentioned on the official support page, Microsoft will end support for Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023, which is about six months from now. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer be supported on Windows 8.1 after the operating system reaches its end of support dates. The company is preparing to send notifications to users about the end of support and users on Windows 8.1 should see such reminders soon. To avoid performance and reliability issues, users are recommended to move to a newer version of Windows. Microsoft mentions that "to main the reliability and stability of Microsoft 365, we strongly recommend you take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities by moving to a new PC with Windows 11." Adding to it, Microsoft says that "Today's computers are faster, more powerful, and sleeker - plus they come with Windows 11 already installed." However, there must be a significant number of users who simply cannot upgrade to a new PC at the given time. Microsoft suggests that such users can upgrade to Windows 10 by purchasing and installing a full version of the software. Although, users should also keep in mind that Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025, which is about three years and four months from now. Hence, if someone's PC does not support the hardware requirements of Windows 11, upgrading to Windows 10 is still a viable option. Microsoft introduces Defenders for individuals In related news, Microsoft has launched Defender for individual subscribers of Microsoft 365, and hence, users from all the platforms including Windows, iOS, Android, and macOS will be able to use the service to protect their devices. Launching Defender, Microsoft said, "We must evolve our security solutions to meet unique customer needs at home and work by bringing together existing technologies in a new way. That is why we are introducing Microsoft Defender for individuals. It was built on our Microsoft Defender for Endpoint technology, leveraging the same trusted security that enterprises rely on." https://www.republicworld.com/technology-news/other-tech-news/microsoft-announces-end-of-support-for-windows-8-dot-1-advises-users-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-articleshow.html
  22. This article talks about a recent interesting cloud maturity report from Seagate and the Enterprise Storage and discussion of the Open19 Linux Foundation effort to create hardware that supports sustainable data centers. Seagate sponsored a survey and report by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) called the Multicloud Maturity Report. 500 survey respondents from around the world participated. The participants were senior IT leaders (71%) and leaders in software development and data analytics (29%). Many organizations are spreading their workload over many data centers, trying to balance the costs for various services versus these service capabilities. The report recognizes that most clouds are not built for interoperability, but try to lock-in customers so their services are used. Where data lives it tends to attract applications, a concept often referred to as data gravity. The report refers to the difficulties in moving content between clouds as friction. In the survey, about 30% of the participants used four or more clouds. The report says that this will rise to 63% of these companies in two years. 76% of survey takers say monitoring, measuring, and ensuring service-level agreement (SLA) adherence for applications that rely on intercloud integrations is challenging. The figures below show some interesting results from the survey. As shown in the figure below, 73% of the survey participants report that their organization is hampered by data retention costs, which limits their ability to maximize data value. With the majority of survey participants indicating difficulties in deriving value from their data the economics of retaining data is reduced. The figure below shows that 57% of the surveyed business leaders said that they deleted data that they knew could be valuable because they saw the costs of storing that data to be prohibitive. The Seagate/ESG report shows the challenges and opportunities for organizations pursuing a multi-cloud strategy. The report projects that companies who achieve multicloud maturity with data driven strategies will achieve the greatest advantages form their cloud efforts. The report creates a multicloud maturity index from a cumulative metric from the survey. The report says that companies that are most adept at navigating the multicloud in terms of costs and innovation are 5.3× more likely than their peers to beat revenue goals by 10%. Organizations scoring high on multicloud maturity are 6.3× more likely to go to market months or quarters ahead of their competition. As a consequence, the report says that multicloud maturity leaders will achieve better bottom line results. Leaders in multicloud maturity were 3.2× more likely to forecast their valuation 3 years from now will be 5× or greater than it is today. Open19 is part of the Linux Foundation to promote open hardware in standard 19-inch racks for data centers and providing cable-free installation and maintenance. It was founded in May 2017 and has members from major data center and equipment companies. Open19 is intended to be deployed in edge environments as well as custom cloud data center deployments. Among the initiatives they are working on is moving from 12 to 48V DC power and providing a consistent environment for all cooling technologies (e.g. liquid cooling) in a box (or brick). Key to the organizations initiatives is removing waste and complications from rack data center deployments. Examples include removing power supplies from the boxes (bricks) and in general standardizing these bricks. By removing power from bricks, the bricks can be replaced or removed without replacing the power supplies, or vice versa. The goal is to extend the life of peripheral components and move from a 4 year to a 15-year life for many peripheral components. There is a move towards greater use of sustainable energy such as fuel cells using hydrogen. Their plans for 2030 include providing more efficient power and cooling (such as liquid cooling). Open19 also has plans to limit Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. There are many factors in controlling this that must include shipping and manufacturing as well as operation of data center components. One possible item to tackle is packaging used to ship hardware to data centers, today this is thrown out to reduce fire hazards, are there other options? Seagate and the Enterprise Storage Group released a multi-cloud maturity report showing that organizations who do the best job of integrating their multi-cloud strategies will have faster time to market, control their costs better and have a better bottom line. Open19 is a Linux Foundation effort to create hardware that supports sustainable data centers. https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomcoughlin/2022/06/25/seagateesg-multi-cloud-maturity-and-linux-foundation-sustainable-data-center-hardware/?sh=734f364a673c
