  1. Media captionTwo rivers burst their banks as the tail end of ex-Cyclone Debbie saw water levels surge The entire town of Edgecumbe on New Zealand's North Island has been evacuated, after severe flooding. About 600 homes and 2,000 people are affected, as tractors and boats helped take locals to safety. The rain, caused by the remnants of Cyclone Debbie, which hit Australia a week ago, has caused a river to burst its banks. The mayor has described the extreme weather as a once-in-500-years event. Heavy rains also flooded roads in Wellington, the capital, and went on to soak New Zealand's South Island. In Edgecumbe the water is said to be as high as 2m (6.5ft) in some areas. Police have erected barriers to prevent residents from returning. Police are searching for one man believed missing in floodwaters near the swollen Waikato river. They have denied social media reports of looting but say they will patrol the area anyway, after locals raised concerns. While the evacuation of Edgecumbe is largely complete, the emergency services are still evacuating dozens of residents from the nearby Whakatane suburb. Parts of the Bay of Plenty area received up to 250mm of rain in the last 36 hours, theNew Zealand Herald reported. "We had to evacuate, (the) house is totally flooded now. We're not sure how bad it's going to get," one resident told Reuters news agency. Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett told reporters that the authorities' message to affected residents was: "Get out and stay out." Kaikoura, the town cut off from the outside world by an earthquake in November, was once again isolated as landslides blocked roads. Rainfall has eased across most of New Zealand's North Island. But former Cyclone Debbie is still having an impact in Australia, where severe flooding hit the town of Rockhampton, inundating hundreds of homes. The category four cyclone has left at least six people dead.

  3. Liverpool are third in the Premier League table this season Liverpool have been fined £100,000 by the Premier League and handed a two-year ban on signing academy players from other clubs for a rule breach. It relates to the club's approach to a 12-year-old academy player at Stoke City in September last year. Liverpool will be banned from signing any academy players who have been registered with a Premier League or EFL club in the previous 18 months. This second year of the ban will be suspended for a three-year period. In September 2016 Liverpool made an application to register the Stoke City Academy player and compensation was agreed. But the application was rejected by the Premier League Board. An investigation by the Premier League found that Liverpool spoke to the youngster and his family before they should have and also paid for him and some of his family to attend a game at Anfield. Liverpool also offered to pay the player's school fees, which were being paid by Stoke at this time, but this was a breach of newly-introduced regulations which state a benefit can only be offered if it is applicable to all youngsters across the club's academy and this was not the case. Premier League rules ban the offer of any inducements from clubs to encourage a move. Liverpool have admitted the rule breaches.

  5. The first time my father’s basement flooded, it was shortly after he moved in. The building was an ocean-front high-rise in a small city north of Miami called Sunny Isles Beach. The marble lobby had a waterfall that never stopped running; crisp-shirted valets parked your car for you. For the residents who lived in the more lavish flats, these cars were often BMWs and Mercedes. But no matter their value, the cars all wound up in the same place: the basement. When I called, I’d ask my dad how the building was doing. “The basement flooded again a couple weeks ago,” he’d sometimes say. Or: “It’s getting worse.” It’s not only his building: he’s also driven through a foot of water on a main road a couple of towns over and is used to tiptoeing around pools in the local supermarket’s car park. Ask nearly anyone in the Miami area about flooding and they’ll have an anecdote to share. Many will also tell you that it’s happening more and more frequently. The data backs them up. It’s easy to think that the only communities suffering from sea level rise are far-flung and remote. And while places like the Solomon Islands andKiribati are indeed facing particularly dramatic challenges, they aren’t the only ones being forced to grapple with the issue. Sea levels are rising around the world, and in the US, south Florida is ground zero – as much for the adaptation strategies it is attempting as for the risk that it bears. Florida State Road A1A runs the entire length of Florida along the ocean, making it vulnerable to flooding – as shown here in Fort Lauderdale in 2013 (Credit: Alamy) One reason is that water levels here are rising especially quickly. The most frequently-used range of estimates puts the likely range between 15-25cm (6-10in) above 1992 levels by 2030, and 79-155cm (31-61in) by 2100. With tides higher than they have been in decades – and far higher than when this swampy, tropical corner of the US began to be drained and built on a century ago – many of south Florida’s drainage systems and seawalls are no longer enough. That means not only more flooding, but challenges for the infrastructure that residents depend on every day, from septic tanks to wells. “The consequences of sea level rise are going to occur way before the high tide reaches your doorstep,” says William Sweet, an oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The flooding would be a challenge for any community, but it poses particular risks here. One recent report estimated that Miami has the most to lose in terms of financial assets of any coastal city in the world, just above Guangzhou, China and New York City. This 120-mile (193km) corridor running up the coast from Homestead to Jupiter – taking in major cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach – is the eighth most populous metropolitan area in the US. It’s also booming. In 2015, the US Census Bureau found that the po[CENSORED]tion of all three counties here was growing – along with the rest of Florida – at around 8%, roughly twice the pace of the US average. Recent studies have shown that Florida has more residents at risk from climate change than any other US state.

  12. It’s not hard to get excited by a Mercedes-AMG sports car aimed at the Porsche 911. But it can be hard to wrap your head around the Mercedes-AMG GT lineup. First there was the GT S, which was followed by an entry-level, non-S GT. Then came the other bookend, the top-of-the-line GT R, and the race car, which gets no name at all beyond the class it sometimes competes in: Mercedes-AMG GT3. Then came the inevitable GT convertible, the GT C, which seemed to be positioned as the roadster complement to the GT S coupe—until it was announced that there will be a GT C coupe as well. There’s no word on an R convertible, although there will be a four-door model from AMG badged as a GT that almost certainly will be available in many, if not all, of the aforementioned trim levels. (When discussing these options with your spouse or financial manager, keep in mind that there are GT S and C coupes and convertibles, but Mercedes also makes S- and C-classcoupes and convertibles, which cover a wide price range. Employ specifics and vagaries as necessary to obtain a blessing for your desired derivative.)
  13. Waze's traffic navigation app already shows ads prodding drivers to swing by fast-food joints like Dunkin' Donuts and Taco Bell. Now it's adding a new item to its menu—the ability to place orders at some shops. On Tuesday, the Google-owned app will start letting drivers purchase coffee and other items from Dunkin' Donuts for pickup along their way. It's the first time that Waze has offered this kind of "order ahead" option, but unlikely to be the last. If all goes well with the Dunkin' Donuts test, Waze plans to team up with other merchants so its millions of users can order pizza, reserve parking spaces, fill prescriptions and even buy groceries without having to open another app on their phones. "It could be almost anything that a driver could order ahead and have ready for pick up," said Jordan Grossman, head of Waze's business partnerships in North America. DOUGHNUTS TO GO Waze won't earn a commission on the Dunkin' Donuts sales made in its app. Instead, Dunkin' Donuts has agreed to increase the amount it spends advertising on Waze. Neither Waze nor Dunkin' Donuts would disclose the size of the increase. Dunkin' Donuts has its own app, which until now was the only way to order ahead at the chain's stores . But working with Waze made sense, said Scott Hudler, chief digital officer for Dunkin' Brands. "Waze involves the ritualistic behavior of driving to work on your daily commute, and we are a brand built on a ritual, too," he said. Drivers using Waze's "order ahead" option will need the Dunkin' Donuts app as well, although they won't have to open it. They'll also need to be registered with Dunkin' Donuts customer loyalty program. CHARTING A COURSE INTO COMMERCE The push into e-commerce is Waze's latest step beyond its original purpose of recommending the fastest way to drive someplace. Waze also offers a carpooling feature that pays drivers to pick up passengers headed in the same direction. It's currently available in the San Francisco Bay Area; Sacramento, California; and Israel. Waze will also offer the carpooling option in Brazil later this year. While still in its infancy, that service could siphon passengers away from ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft.

  14. NVIDIA is known for wanting to maintain its performance dominance over AMD at all costs, so to help ensure this, they have done something very special for their loyal customers. Just a few days ago, we reported that NVIDIA will be releasing a faster version of the GTX 1080 with 11Gbps speed memory in April, the same as that found on its bigger brother, the GTX 1080 Ti. Now, our sources at NVIDIA (who wish to remain anonymous for obvious reasons) have told Wccftech that Founders Edition GTX 1080 11Gbps graphics cards bought directly from NVIDIA’s geforce.com website, are really full GTX 1080 Ti cards in disguise. These come with the full GP102 GPU instead of the cut down GP104 GPU and the full complement of 11GB video RAM. The only visual difference will be that the cooler will show “GTX 1080” and not “GTX 1080 Ti”, a mere cosmetic difference only. Out of the box, they will work just like a GTX 1080, with the same performance and power usage. Additionally, the video driver will also identify them as a GTX 1080. However, by simply flashing them with the video BIOS of a Founders Edition GTX 1080 Ti, the full performance will be unlocked! The video driver will then identify them as a GTX 1080 Ti. ADVERTISEMENT

  16. Federer previously won the Miami title in 2005 and 2006 Roger Federer won a thrilling three-hour contest against Nick Kyrgios to set up a final against Rafael Nadal at the Miami Open. The Swiss, 35, won 7-6 (11-9) 6-7 (9-11) 7-6 (7-5) to take his 2017 record to 18 wins and one defeat. Federer will take on Nadal for the 37th time on Sunday, and the second final this year after beating the Spaniard at January's Australian Open. Nadal, 30, beat Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-1 7-5 in the first semi-final. Fognini, 29, had become the first unseeded player in 10 years to make the last four but was no match for Nadal, who will try to win a first Miami title in his fifth final on Sunday. "It's great to be in the final for me," said Nadal after winning the first of the semi-finals. "I am excited to play another final of an important event. "If it's Roger, it's going to be another one for both of us, and that's it. Just another one." Federer made sure that there will be another episode to his rivalry with Nadal, which began in Miami 13 years ago.
