Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been granted bail for six weeks to receive medical treatment. Sharif is serving a seven-year term imposed last year for investments beyond his declared assets. He denies any wrongdoing and has appealed. The 69-year-old reportedly has a heart condition and kidney problems. The Supreme Court says he will not be allowed to leave the country and needs to surrender to prison authorities at the end of the bail term. Sharif's lawyers claimed that he needed urgent medical attention that could not be provided in jail. Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa says if he does not surrender voluntarily he faces being arrested. Profile: Nawaz Sharif How a font exposed 'fake' documents A bail appeal last month was rejected by the High Court because they said that reports of his condition did not "suggest that continued incarceration... in any way, would be detrimental to his life". Who is Nawaz Sharif? Sharif was prime minister from 1990 to 1993, and again from 1997 until a bloodless coup in 1999. He was then elected for a third term in 2013, which was marred by upheavals and corruption allegations. The Supreme Court removed him from office in July 2017, claiming he had failed to disclose part of a salary drawn from his son's company. He was then convicted in two other separate corruption cases for not disclosing sources of income. Sharif denies any wrongdoing and claims the charges are politically motivated.

The UK government's Brexit withdrawal deal offers temporary guarantees for Britons living elsewhere in the EU and EU citizens in the UK. But the UK parliament has rejected that deal twice, so a no-deal exit is still a real possibility. The EU has set 12 April as the new deadline - instead of 29 March - for the UK to resolve the Brexit impasse. By that date, the EU says, the UK must present a viable way forward, or face a no-deal exit. Under no deal a host of things would change overnight - what critics call the "cliff edge". But here we will focus on the situation of Britons living in another EU country (in the EU27). About 1.3m UK-born people are resident in the EU27, while the UK hosts about 3.2m EU27 nationals. The withdrawal deal enables them to keep their current freedom of movement and other EU citizenship rights, until 31 December 2020, when the Brexit transition period ends. The withdrawal agreement - what it all means As for no deal, there is huge uncertainty about what it will mean for Britons living in France, Spain, Germany and elsewhere. The priority for most will be to register as residents, but the rules - including deadlines for paperwork - vary from country to country. The European Commission, in its contingency plan for no-deal Brexit, urges the EU27 to "take a generous approach to the rights of UK citizens in the EU, provided that this approach is reciprocated by the UK". It says the EU27 "should adopt a pragmatic approach to granting temporary residence status".

The Turkish lira plunged by as much as 5% against the dollar this morning. This week, Turkey has been directing its banks to withhold lira liquidity from the London market, in order to defend the currency until after local elections on Sunday 31 March. The Turkish government had apparently also ordered its banks to keep foreign investors from exiting lira trades, according to reports. That's why the London overnight swap rate rocketed to 1,200% on Wednesday - the highest rate on record - but that is now back towards 50% amid signs that Turkish banks have started provided lira to the market again.

The European Union has never had a chief prosecutor, and now the front-runner to become the first is a woman who has built a fearsome reputation at home. Until last year Laura Codruta Kovesi, 45, was head of Romania's powerful Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA). She is up against an attorney general from France, Jean-François Bohnert – and facing fierce opposition from her own government. As head of the new European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), whoever wins will have extensive powers to investigate and prosecute the misuse of EU funds and VAT fraud between EU member states. How Kovesi became her government's deadly enemy A talented basketball player in her youth, Laura Kovesi became a general prosecutor at just 36. By 2013 she was head of the DNA – and built up quite a track record. During her five years in the job she put 68 high-level functionaries on trial, including 14 government ministers or ex-ministers and 53 deputies from both houses of the Romanian parliament. By the time she was forced out of the job by the governing Social Democrats, 37 of those politicians had already been convicted, and most of the other cases were still ongoing.

Former communist militant Cesare Battisti has admitted to four murders in Italy during the 1970s, according local press. Battisti, 64, spent decades on the run and previously denied any involvement. He was arrested in Bolivia in January after living in Brazil, and later extradited to Italy. Milan's prosecutor, Alberto Nobili, said Battisti confessed during questioning in prison, where he is serving a life sentence. "It is a very important recognition for the work of the magistrates, a sort of 'honour of the arms' for those who have investigated it," said Milan prosecutor Alberto Nobili. In 1979, Battisti was convicted of belonging to a far-left terrorist group outlawed in Italy - the Armed Proletarians for Communism (PAC). He escaped prison in 1981. Later, Battisti was convicted in absentia for killing two Italian law officials, for taking part in a separate murder and for planning another which left the victim's 14-year-old son in a wheelchair after a shoot-out.He lived in France, Mexico, and later Brazil where he was given asylum by the country's then-president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In January, a Brazilian court threw out his refugee status shortly after the election of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who pledged to have him sent back to Italy. He has admitted being part of the PAC but previously denied responsibility for the murders. "When I killed, for me it was a just war," Battisti reportedly said during his confession. "I realise the harm I have done and I apologise to the families of the victims".
