  1. The 2017 Porsche Macan Turbo, with the new Performance package, will sprint to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Think about that for a minute. That's almost as fast as the original R8, and it’s faster than a 2015 Mustang GT. The 2017 Macan Turbo gets a “newly calibrated” twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 making 400 hp. Adding the Performance pack bumps that up to 440 hp and drops that sprint time by .2 second. Top speed is 169 mph with the package and torque goes up to 442 lb-ft from 406 lb-ft. The base Macan Turbo is $77,050, including $1,050 for destination. The Performance pack bumps that up to $87,495, but for that you get the ultimate in Porsche small SUV performance.
  2. Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne said that Ferrari will build one more LaFerrari to be auctioned off. The proceeds of the 500th and final LaFerrari will go to helping victims of the Aug. 24, 2016, earthquake in central Italy. The 6.2-magnitude quake has already taken more than 200 lives and did so much property damage that Italian building standards are being questioned. While it isn’t clear yet when or where the special Ferrari will be auctioned, it is likely going to bring a high price because of the circumstances surrounding the build. Ferrari only planned on building 499 coupes, with a few more LaFerrari Spiders to round out production. This will be number 500 and sold for charity, which means it'll probably go for a lot higher than the LaFerrari's MSRP of about $1.4 million. We can imagine the whole world of supercar collectors checking in on this sale, with hopes of nabbing one of the fastest road-going Ferraris ever produced. That’s good considering it’s all going to an important cause, relief in its home country.
  3. Manufacturers love to throw around the word “sport.” They attach it to trim names, package names and special-edition names, but it usually doesn’t mean much. Ford—a company on a roll right now as far as building sporty cars: GT, GT350, RS—just added the word to its midsize Fusion sedan, and God bless ’em, it’s actually sporty. Stick with us here, but when you add 85 hp and 110 lb-ft of torque, albeit with a bigger, turbocharged engine, it’s going to make the car sportier. The only available powertrain in the 2017 Fusion Sport is a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 making 325 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque matched with a new six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. You may be familiar with that EcoBoost, it’s been known to pull around an F-150 or two. The Fusion Sport comes in at a porky 3,982 pounds, that’s 377 pounds heavier than the Honda Accord, its main rival along with the Toyota Camry. Both of those sedans also offer overpowered V6s, making this a sweet time to get into midsize sedan ownership. Some of the extra heft comes from the new-for-2017 tech including pre-collision warning, pedestrian detection, park assist ($995), auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go ($1,195), Sync 3 and Android Auto/Apple Carplay. That’s in addition to the returning stuff like lane-departure and blind-spot warnings, lane keeping and the rear-view camera. Ford says that a company’s midsize sedan “is the number one influencer of brand opinion.” This is obviously false, as Autoweek is the number one influencer of brand opinion. The Sport gets bigger wheels than the rest of the lineup, 19s as opposed to 17s, a dark grille, a sharper front clip and twin dual exhaust. Dark rims with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires are standard, summer Continentals are optional, as is a sunroof. It certainly looks the sport part and it has the numbers to back it up. Could we possibly have an American version of an German autobahn burner?
  4. Apple has been busy snapping up dozens of AI startups, and its Siri product is one of the most-widely-used AI applications on the planet, but recent AI headlines have focused on more glamorous efforts — especially from competitors Google and Facebook. Both Google and Facebook have released major AI technologies into open source, and Google’s DeepMind famously tackled the challenge of Go, by beating one of the world’s best players. So Apple took the very unusual step of spending an entire day bragging about its AI efforts to journalist Steven Levy, who published a very-thorough account on Backchannel. The article reads more like an inventory than a coherent strategy document. There are long lists of AI technologies, AI-infused Apple products, acquired startups, and key hires. So it is a little hard to connect all the dots and discern exactly which technologies are in use in which products, but one clear take away is that the neural network renaissance has had the same disruptive effect on Siri — when it moved to neural nets in 2014 — and other Apple efforts as it has for Google’s speech recognition, Facebook’s facial recognition, and plenty of other fields. Apple says Siri’s accuracy more than doubled when it made the switch, which is fairly consistent with the progress Google has made for its “OK Google” voice recognition through adoption of similar technologies — a couple years earlier.
  5. Next year we’ll likely see Intel likely introduce at least two high-end chips. The first is an unexpected surprise—you know, like your baby sister or brother. Code-named Kaby Lake, it’s born mostly out of necessity. Intel’s pattern the last few years has been to build two CPUs per process technology before moving on. For example, Intel built its Ivy Bridge and Haswell chips on a 22nm process. But with confidence problems in its 10nm process, Intel will do three on the 14nm process: Broadwell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake. Rumors indicate Kaby Lake will have more USB ports, more PCIe lanes, and even support for next-generation Intel Optane storage. It's too early to have more solid information, but we do have Intel’s official confirmation that it will make Kaby Lake. You can also chalk rumors of Broadwell-E in the iffy column, but this one is very predictable. In fact, Intel has repeated this same pattern three times now with Sandy Bridge-E, Ivy Bridge-E and Haswell-E. The formula is to take the company’s Xeon chips, switch off a couple of features, and sell them to consumers who just want more cores. The question isn’t if Broadwell-E is coming next year, but how many cores Intel will put in the CPUs. Rumors indicate Intel is mulling offering a 10-core version. That may sound like it’s too good to be true, but there is precedence. With Haswell-E in 2014, Intel sold its first consumer 8-core chip and even offered a 6-core version at a surprisingly reasonable price. Intel could do the same with a 10-core Broadwell-E, especially if the company is fearful of real competition from AMD’s Zen. Intel’s generational performance gains have been fairly unremarkable, so the boost simply from having two more cores would be welcome. The only thing that could throw this all for a loop are reports that Intel is planning to introduce Skylake-E next year, which would mean it's scrubbing Broadwell-E. That makes no sense to us, but that’s the problem with rumors.
  6. Mother Teresa, revered for her work with the poor in India, has been proclaimed a saint by Pope Francis in a ceremony at the Vatican. Francis said St Teresa had defended the unborn, sick and abandoned, and had shamed world leaders for the "crimes of poverty they themselves created". Tens of thousands of pilgrims attended the canonisation in St Peter's Square. Two apparent cures of sick people after Mother Teresa's death in 1997 have been attributed to her intercession. In India, a special Mass was celebrated at the Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded in Kolkata (Calcutta). Despite the intense heat, the atmosphere among the pilgrims in St Peter's Square was one of joy, and the service a celebration of the life of this extraordinary woman. Teresa was born an ethnic Albanian, and the Albanian flag was much in evidence, as was the distinctive white habit, trimmed with blue stripes, worn by the nuns of her order, the Missionaries of Charity. In his homily of St Teresa's work, Pope Francis said she had shone a light in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering. It was clear that her life reflected the kind of Church that this Pope is trying to build: one that shows mercy to all and offers practical help for the poorest and for all those in need. Although critics have sought to portray St Teresa as a sinner and a hypocrite, her supporters have been just as vocal in her defence, challenging those critics to live their lives the way St Teresa did, before they cast the first stone. Hundreds of Missionaries of Charity sisters attended the event, along with 13 heads of state or government. Some 1,500 homeless people across Italy were also brought to Rome in buses to be given seats of honour at the celebration - and then a pizza lunch served by 250 nuns and priests of the Sisters of Charity order.
  7. Ford Focus RS owners already have 350 hp at their disposal -- a number that would have been thought of as insane for a hatch just a generation ago -- but Hennessey Performance views the stock RS merely as a starting point. The tuner plans to offer an upgrade package for the eyewateringly quick hatch that will crank the horsepower up to 405. Specifically, Hennessey's HPE400 package will take the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine from 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque up to 405 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. The tuner plans to achieve this by installing a new stainless-steel exhaust system, tweaking the engine management software and adding a high-flow air filter. The performance pack isn't quite ready yet, but Hennessey plans to sell the parts needed as a kit for $2,995 and will install the parts and run the car on a dyno for $4,995.
  8. Nissan will be in California this month for the 12th annual Japanese Classic Car Show. The automaker plans to display the car that first put them in the racing winning circle, the No. 46 Datsun 510 by Brock Racing Enterprises, and its latest winner, the No. 05 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3. But the main attraction of JCCS will be the debut of the street-legal 2017 GT-R Nismo. The GT-R Nismo made its world debut in May at the Nurburgring, and it didn’t disappoint. Like the previous model, the sports car is equipped with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6, which still produces 600 hp. The AWD system has been updated, along with the interior. The layout has been improved, as well. Nissan updated the navigation, reduced the number of knobs from 27 to 11 and added a new Display Command console. More than 7,000 spectators are expected to attend JCCS, and there will be more than 350 classic and unique cars. Highlights include the first public showing of a new 1:64-scale model 1971 Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-X coupe from Matchbox, a 1969 Nissan Patrol, the new 2017 Armada, 1962 Nissan Fairlady and a modified 1971 Nissan “Hakosuka” GT-R tribute vehicle. The event takes place Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Harry Bridges Memorial Park at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. Nissan plans to give away a bunch of prizes, including some of the new Matchbox models. More details will be released throughout September. Look for the hashtag NissanAtJCCS for additional information regarding the show and giveaways.
  9. When we think of classic BMWs, one of the Neue Klasse models usually pops into our minds. Or perhaps an Isetta or a 507; two very different classics. But before the Neue Klasse models defined BMW for decades, the German automaker struggled to find its niche in the post-war years, experimenting with luxurious sedans that aimed squarely for Mercedes-Benz models. And this weekend, Silverstone Auctions will offer a piece of that history; a 1957 BMW 502 3.2 V8 sedan in "barn find" condition that has been hiding in the U.K. What were the 502 sedans about? The second all-new post-war BMW design, the 502 sought to correct the shortcomings of the 501 sedan which was powered by a six-cylinder engine that wasn't up to the task; the 501 was a commercial flop. Debuting at the 1954 Geneva motor show the 502 offered slightly revised exterior styling and a 3.2-liter V8 that the company hoped would allow it to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz "Ponton" sedans of the time, which featured equally curvy exteriors. The 501 and 502 were nicknamed "Baroque Angels" for their slightly overstyled appearance.
