  1. Corsair is extending the warranties on select power supplies by three years. I'm super lazy when it comes to buying a new PC power supply (PSU). I only have three basic requirements: does it supply enough power for my needs, does it have modular cables, and is it made by a reputable company? In the [CENSORED]ure, however, I may pay closer attention to what Corsair PSUs specifically have to offer, because the power supply guarantee it just rolled out is pretty darn compelling. The hardware company recently announced it's extending the warranties from seven to ten years on four different series of high-end PSUs. The PSUs in question include AXi, HXi, RMi, and RMx brand models, and the new warranty covers all current and [CENSORED]ure models sold worldwide. Corsair says customers won’t be required to take any extra action, such as registration, to get the new warranty. Instead, it extends to all units automatically. “With an extra three years of warranty, enthusiasts, system builders and gamers alike can be confident that their...PSU will provide, efficient, stable power well into the next decade and beyond,” Corsair said in its announcement. Why this matters: Corsair is only the second notable company to place such a long warranty on its power supplies. EVGA also guarantees a 10-year warranty on select PSU models, while Cooler Master and Seasonic both top out at 5 years. This is a notable change for Corsair since power supply buyers tend to be serious PC enthusiasts, a.k.a. people who tend to pay attention to fine details like the length of a product warranty. Not to mention that a PSU is one of those components that most people want to “set and forget.” A 10-year warranty goes a long way to reassuring customers they’re purchasing a reliable piece of hardware that will give them little trouble.

  3. Researchers from Northwestern University discover how an attacker could write a malicious Firefox add-on that takes advantage of security holes in other Firefox add-ons to do its bidding. It goes without saying that any given piece of computer code—be it an app, a part of your operating system, or even a browser plug-in—may contain flaws that could leave your PC open to attack. But a team of researchers from Northwestern University have come across a new method of attack that can take advantage of holes in one or more installed Firefox add-ons. According to the team’s research paper (PDF), this newly discovered attack “leverages capability leaks from legitimate extensions to avoid the inclusion of security-sensitive API calls within the malicious extension itself.” Put another way: Firefox doesn’t enforce any isolation between the add-ons you install, as Ars Technica notes, which could potentially result in security problems. As a result of this lack of isolation, researchers say, an attacker could write a malicious Firefox add-on that appears harmless, but can use security flaws in other installed add-ons to do its bidding. In this sort of attack, the malicious add-on itself might not raise and security red flags, but it may still be able to wreak havoc on your PC. What’s the actual risk of attack? The implications of these so-called “extension-reuse vulnerabilities” are potentially serious, especially if you consider that, according to the research paper, “nine of the top 10 extensions contain a large number of such vulnerabilities” and that fact that it may only take “only one or two vulnerabilities” to launch an attack against your PC. That said, the paper doesn’t get into the exact risk of an attack on any particular system, and measuring risk might be tricky given how different users will have a different combination of add-ons installed. That is, it’s relatively easy to attack a vulnerability in one po[CENSORED]r piece of software, such as Flash Player. It’s more difficult to attack a combination of vulnerabilities at once because it’s less likely that all potential targets will have all the necessary add-ons installed. Still, this is one area of security research we’ll want to watch closely.
  4. It’s official: versions of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 950 lacking extra power pins are a thing now. EVGA's the latest company to join the low-power GTX 950 craze with four new models of the entry-level graphics card. Instead of relying on a 6-pin power connector, the new GTX 950s will draw power from the motherboard via the PCIe x16 slot. The impact on you at home: Like the similar models from Asus and MSI, EVGA's new cards are a good solution for older devices looking for a hassle-free graphics upgrade, as well as HTPCs in need of a respectable graphics card. But be aware that the cards measure 6.8 inches long. That’s a little longer than the standard 6.7-inch length of a mini-ITX motherboard. That said, these cards should fit all but the most extremely space constrained mini-ITX set-ups. Inside EVGA's low-power GTX 950 graphics cards The cards have what you’d expect from a GTX 950, including 768 CUDA cores, 32 ROPs, and 48 texture units, as first reported by Anandtech. Each card also has a single fan and EVGA’s ACX 2.0 cooling. The two cards don’t have any special names to denote their low-power profile, as far as we know. Instead, you have to go with the part numbers, which are: 02G-P4-0952 02G-P4-0956 02G-P4-0954 02G-P4-0958 The first two are the more basic models offering slightly fewer ports, including DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI-I. The bottom two, meanwhile, add DVI-D in addition to the other three output options. For clock speed, the 0952 and 0954 models are the “lower end” versions of each range with clock speeds running at Nvidia’s reference design of 1025MHz base and 1190MHz boost. The other two offer faster speeds at 1076/1253. EVGA announced these new cards on Tuesday, but has yet to say when the cards will be available. Pricing also wasn’t announced.
  5. The Piz Daint supercomputer in Switzerland will be used to analyze data from the Large Hadron Collider It didn’t take long for Nvidia’s monstrous Tesla P100 GPU to make its mark in an ongoing race to build the world’s fastest computers. Just a day after Nvidia’s CEO said he was “friggin’ excited” to introduce the Tesla P100, the company announced its fastest GPU ever would be used to upgrade a supercomputer called Piz Daint. Roughly 4,500 of the GPUs will be installed in the supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Switzerland. Piz Daint already has a peak performance of 7.8 petaflops, making it the seventh-fastest computer in the world. The fastest in the world is the Tianhe-2 in China, which has a peak performance of 54.9 petaflops, according to the Top500 list released in November. Two of the world’s ten fastest computers use GPUs as co-processors to speed up simulations and scientific applications: Titan, at the U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Piz Daint. The latter is used to analyze data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Nvidia has already made a desktop-type supercomputer with the Tesla P100. The DGX-1 can deliver 170 teraflops of performance, or 2 petaflops when several are installed on a rack. It has eight Tesla P100 GPUs, two Xeon CPUs, 7TB of solid-state-drive storage and dual 10-Gigabit ethernet ports. The GPU will also be in volume servers from IBM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell and Cray by the first quarter of next year. Huang said companies building mega data centers for the cloud will be using servers with Tesla P100s by the end of the year. The Tesla P100 is one of the largest chips ever made and may be one of the fastest. It has 150 billion transistors and packs many new GPU technologies that could give Piz Daint a serious boost in horsepower. The P100 is based on a new architecture called Pascal, which has new instruction sets to speed up scientific computing and deep learning. Nvidia offers its own parallel programming framework called CUDA that will help developers write applications that harness the computing boost delivered by Pascal. The GPU has a peak floating-point performance of about 21.2 teraflops, which is almost twice as fast as Nvidia’s Tesla M60, a top-line GPU based on the older Maxwell architecture. The Tesla P100 has 16GB of HBM2 (High-Bandwidth Memory 2), a new type of fast memory making its way to GPUs. The memory chips are stacked on top of each other in a 3D format instead of being placed next to each other. The new format makes HBM2 a faster and denser form of memory. The new GPU is also the first with Nvidia’s homegrown NVLink interface, which can transfer data five times faster than PCI-Express 3.0. The Piz Daint computer upgrade is expected to be deployed by the end of this year. An earlier version of this story mischaracterized the Piz Daint project. The supercomputer already exists and is being upgraded. It also misstated Piz Daint’s peak performance, which is 7.8 petaflops, and misstated the number of Nvidia DGX-1 computers required to reach 2 petaflops.

  7. The government is to spend more than £9m on sending a leaflet to every UK household setting out the case for remaining in the European Union. The 14 page document, to be sent to 27 million homes, is designed to respond to public demand for more details about the EU referendum by setting out the facts behind the government's position. The move has sparked fresh complaints from those campaigning to leave the EU. Tory MP Bernard Jenkin said it was "an outrageous abuse of taxpayers money". The mailshot "flies in the face of the government's claim that they want a fair referendum", he added. The Royal Mail will start delivering the leaflet to households in England next week and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland after 5 May devolved elections. A digital version will be advertised on social media and available on a new website: www.eureferendum.gov.uk. The government says the mail drop will cost £9.3m, about 34p per household. 'Higher prices' A similar leaflet was sent out by the government during the 2014 referendum on Scotland's independence and in the 1975 referendum on Britain's membership of the European Community. But in 1975 the leaflet was contained a picture and a signed introduction by the then prime minister, Harold Wilson. The latest leaflet, however, does not include any images of David Cameron. Instead, the 14 page leaflet is plain and official, containing pictures of workers, shoppers and families, concentrating overwhelmingly on what the government sees as the economic case for staying in the EU. It claims that "over three million UK jobs are linked to exports to the EU" and that "if the UK voted to leave the EU, the resulting economic shock would risk higher prices of some household goods". Officials described the document as "a straightforward, sober representation of the government case", designed both to change voters' minds and encourage others to register to vote. 'Propaganda' They said internal opinion polls suggested that 85% of people wanted the government to provide more information so they could make an informed decision on 23 June. The government said the leaflets had cost £458,500 to produce and £5.94m to print and deliver across the UK, An additional £2.89m has been spent on the accompanying website and "digital promotion". But Vote Leave described it as "propaganda" designed to "buy votes". "I think it is deeply disappointing that the government is going to spend taxpayers money in a bid to distract the media headlines away from the allegations of offshore banks that have dogged the prime minister," Robert Oxley, the campaign group's head of media, said. "Our money should not be used on propaganda, trying to buy votes. We already send £350m to Brussels each week. We should spend our money on our priorities like the NHS." Mr Jenkin added: "In this one act, the government will spend more on their Remain campaign than the official Leave group will be able to spend between now and polling day." The designated Leave campaign will get public money to deliver its own leaflet to all households later in the campaign, as will the designated Remain campaign. Officials said it was entirely legitimate for the government to make its case and said there was no legal reason why it could not do so. The decision to send this leaflet was agreed by the Cabinet sub committee on the EU and was signed off by Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood. Only during the last 28 days will special so-called "purdah rules" apply banning any official government role in the campaign.
  8. Without explicitly trying, Intel and Razer may have cracked the code to easy PC upgrades. For years, PC makers have tantalized us with visions of modular computing. Instead of making us rip open our desktop towers and weave through wires to replace a faulty hard drive or outdated graphics card, modular PCs have promised to make upgrades as simple as stacking Lego bricks. Still, the grand concepts we’ve seen so far—including Razer’s Project Christine, Acer’s Revo Build, and the Micro Lego Computer—are impractical for a long list of reasons. The biggest is that no one wants to lock themselves into limited, proprietary hardware systems with no guaranteed upgrade path. It’s a classic chicken-and-egg problem: No customers means no ecosystem, which in turn means no customers. A couple of recent developments, however, provide hope that the modular PC dream isn’t dead. The first is the rise of Intel’s NUC desktops, a class of bare-bones machines that are now becoming as powerful as any decent desktop computer. The second is the creation of nonproprietary external graphics card docks, led by the Razer Core. Neither of these efforts are as elegant as the Lego-like PC systems we’ve been promised in years past. But at least it’s now possible to imagine a path through which the modular PC becomes more than just fantasy. Breaking down the modular PC Compared to a traditional desktop, the main advantage of a modular system would be convenience. Not everyone is comfortable rewiring a desktop system with new parts, and even people who know their way around a PC’s innards may not find the effort worthwhile. Razer’s Project Christine was a thrilling concept, but proprietary components would have made for an impractical product. This is especially true when it comes to replacing the processor. CPU makers routinely change the socket design of their chips—Intel more often than AMD—which in turn requires a new motherboard. And replacing the motherboard is a major ordeal, requiring you to rewire everything from the power supply to the graphics card to the hard drive. That’s where Intel’s NUC kits come in. These are bare-bones PCs with the processor and motherboard built-in. You have to replace them both when it’s time to upgrade, but chances are you were going to do that anyway. Meanwhile, you supply your own operating system, RAM, and storage—in other words, the things you’re most likely to replace individually. Until recently, Intel’s NUCs were limited to low-power, dual-core processors. But recently Intel announced a new version, code-named Skull Canyon, with a quad-core i7-6770HQ chip inside—the type of processor you’d find in a solid gaming laptop—and support for up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM. Intel’s Skull Canyon NUC puts big performance in a small package. Why is this preferable to a traditional bare-bones desktop? It’s all about size and convenience. Intel has cut out the space normally afforded to an internal GPU (more on that shortly), and uses small but speedy M.2 slots for solid state storage. The result is a compact machine that doesn’t require any internal wiring, yet still allows easy upgrades for the parts that most likely need replacing. Enter the external graphics card In years past, a desktop PC without a graphics card inside would be a nonstarter for gamers, graphic artists, video editors, and anyone else who needs robust visual performance. But soon, it’ll be possible to add a graphics card outside of the PC. This month, Razer became the first company to offer a nonproprietary external graphics card enclosure. The Razer Core can hold any GPU up to 375W TDP, and connects to any PC with a Thunderbolt 3 input, including the aforementioned Skull Canyon NUC. External graphics card enclosures like the Razer Core will let you upgrade without ripping open your PC. Put the pieces together, and you have a system that truly feels modular. RAM, storage, and graphics are all easily replaceable, and because the core system is small, the entire setup shouldn’t take up any more space than a traditional desktop, and may even be more compact. To take the modularity even further, users could shuttle the external graphics card around to multiple desktops and laptops as needed, or swap between AMD and Nvidia cards to enjoy their respective features. Building the [CENSORED]ure PC Down the road, PC makers could latch onto this system and start streamlining it. You can imagine, for instance, a single dock that neatly arranges the core computing unit, the graphics card, and external hard drives, like an inside-out desktop tower. Perhaps the industry even starts devising standard connectors for these pieces that don’t involve unsightly USB and Thunderbolt cables—Intel’s vision for wireless computing could pay dividends here in due time. The result would look a lot like the modular concepts we’ve seen, but without all the proprietary enclosures. Granted, this vision of computing isn’t going to be for everyone. The most hardcore PC gamers might want to upgrade CPUs more often than every three or four years, in which case the socketed CPU is going to make more sense. And for now, dual graphics card setups aren’t supported by enclosures like the Razer Core. But keep in mind that modular computers aren’t aimed at expert PC builders. They’re for the average user who wants the benefits of a desktop PC—upgradable components, more power than a laptop—without the hassle. Wire-free desktops and external graphics cards pave the way for making this ideal a reality.
  9. The VR-oriented Z Workstations will feature 22-core Intel chips and Nvidia's Quadro GPUs. If you thought virtual reality headsets were expensive, the price of desktops designed to create VR content will blow you away. HP's new Z Workstations, announced on Tuesday, start at US $4,363, and that doesn't include a VR headset. The desktops can also be used for movie-making, engineering tasks, and other resource-heavy applications. The desktops can be used to create content for HTC's Vive headset. HP's line of Z Workstations have been used to make movies like Deadpool, but creating virtual reality content can require significantly more graphics processing power. In the last two weeks, Dell and Lenovo have also announced VR-ready desktops. Some Dell Precision desktops can create content for Oculus Rift, in addition to the HTC Vive. The configurations for the Dell Precision machines vary because Oculus Rift desktops need faster CPUs and GPUs. The Z Workstation desktops can be configured with Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 chips, which have up to 22 cores. The 22-core Xeon E5-2699 v4 chip is typically reserved for servers and draws 145 watts of power, meaning the computer will need a powerful cooling system. The high-end Z840 system can be configured with dual CPUs, though it won't be possible to put two 22-core chips in one system because of the amount of heat they would generate. The desktops can be configured with dual Quadro M6000 24GB graphics cards in an SLI (scalable link interface) configuration. The two GPUs combine to provide monster graphics performance to drive the production of VR content. The desktop also takes advantage of Nvidia technology that allows the graphics to flow smoothly and ensure the VR experience isn't nauseating. The system supports up to 256GB of DDR4 memory or 1TB of LRDDR4 (load-reduced DDR4) memory. The LRDIMM DRAM usually operates at lower speed, but allows more memory to be crammed in a system. It's often used in servers for applications like databases that need in-memory processing. The system has a wide range of hard-drive and SSD storage options. There are provisions for six SATA, eight SAS (serial-attached SAS) or two PCI-Express 3.0 NVMe storage ports. It has five USB 3.0 and three USB 2.0 ports. It also has Gigabit Ethernet, and supports 850- and 1125-watt power supplies. The monitor, keyboard and mouse need to be purchased separately.
  10. If your wallet isn't phat enough for the world's thinnest laptop from HP, the company also has some new modestly priced Envy laptops worth looking at. HP went on a tear Tuesday, unleashing a torrent of new laptops. Besides revealing the super-slim HP Spectre, which HP claims is the world’s thinnest laptop at 0.41-inch, the company rolled out three new Envy devices—one of which is the first laptop to come rocking AMD’s new Bristol Ridge chip. The story behind the story: HP Inc.’s laptop introduction comes shortly after the company’s CEO sat down with The New York Times to preview the Spectre. HP’s latest devices reflect an ongoing trend among computer makers to reinvigorate the storied PC with cutting edge design and features at a time when PCs aren't as desirable as they used to be. HP isn’t just about PCs, however. The company is also moving into phones for the enterprise with the Elite x3, which runs Windows 10 and supports Continuum. The Times also got a look at new HP printers that can do “laser-quality printing twice as fast and for half the cost.” Envy x360 HP’s Envy x360 (2016) in tablet mode. First up is a new Envy x360 convertible, which is 21 percent thinner than the previous generation at 0.74-inch. Even though it’s thinner, the overall look of the machine hasn’t changed that much since the 2015 Envy x360 rolled out last April. Save for the obvious switch from the Hewlett-Packard name written out to the HP logo that now adorns the bottom of the display—likely owing to the recent company spin-off as HP Inc. The innards aren’t all that different either, but there are a few interesting twists and additions. Like last year, you get your choice of the latest Intel i5 or i7 processors. This time around it’s Skylake chips, while the 2015 editions were rocking Broadwell. But the new Envy x360 also carries the option for the quad-core AMD FX 9800P, which makes the x360 the first laptop to offer an AMD ‘Bristol Ridge’ chip. The Envy x360 touchscreen offers a variety of resolution options, including 1080p and 4K. As for ports, you get a pair of USB 3.0 ports and a USB Type-C connection, along with an HDMI port and an SD Card reader. The New Envy x360 can handle up to 16GB of RAM, a 2TB hard drive, and still have room for a 256GB PCIe SSD. HP says the x360’s battery will last up to 11 hours. Envy laptops The 15.6-inch Envy laptop from HP. HP also introduced two standard Envy laptops with 15.6- and 17.3-inch displays—both offering touchscreen options. The two models come with three USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C connection with support for fast charging, and Windows Hello compatibility courtesy of an integrated camera (the 17.3-inch version uses an Intel RealSense unit). The 15.6-inch model weighs in at 4.4 pounds and has a 0.71-inch profile. This unit also supports up to a Core i7 processor with integrated graphics. RAM tops out at 16GB, and like the x360, you can get a 1TB HDD and a 256GB PCIe SSD. The backside of the 17.3-inch HP Envy laptop. The 17.3-inch version, meanwhile, tips the scales at a whopping 6.6 pounds and is 1-inch thick. The larger laptop doesn’t have the dual storage options the two other Envy models, have settling for either a 1TB HDD or 512GB SATA SSD. But the larger laptop does offer models with an optical disk drive, as well as an optional Nvidia GeForce 940MX discrete graphics card. Pricing and availability for all three laptops is a little complicated. The HP Envy x360 and 17.3-inch Envy laptop will hit HP.com on June 1, while BestBuy.com gets them on May 29. Those notebooks also come to Best Buy stores on June 12. Pricing at all locations starts at $680 for the x360 and $1030 for the regular laptop. The 15.6-inch Envy comes to HP.com on May 25 and other retailers on June 12 with a starting price of $780.
  11. The new GPU will provide a serious performance boost to servers and supercomputers Nvidia's fastest GPU yet, the new Tesla P100, will be available in servers next year, the company said. Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Cray and IBM will start taking orders for servers with the Tesla P100 in the fourth quarter of this year, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said during a keynote at the GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, California. The servers will start shipping in the first quarter of next year, Huang said Tuesday. The GPU will also ship to companies designing hyperscale servers in-house and then to outsourced manufacturing shops. It will be available for in-house "cloud servers" by the end of the year, Huang said. Nvidia is targeting the GPUs at deep-learning systems, in which algorithms aid in the correlation and classification of data. These systems could help self-driving cars, robots and drones identify objects. The goal is to accelerate the learning time of such systems so the accuracy of results improves over time. Nvidia's GPUs are widely used in supercomputers today. Two of the world's 10 fastest supercomputers use Nvidia GPUs, according to a list compiled by Top500.org. The Tesla P100 is based on Nvidia's new Pascal architecture. Many new features could help the GPU improve overall server performance. The GPU has 15 billion transistors, and its floating point performance tops out at 21.2 teraflops. The chip was made using the 16-nanometer FinFET process. Chips are stacked on top each other, allowing Nvidia to cram in more features. The Tesla P100 has HBM2 (High-Bandwidth Memory 2) memory that boasts bandwidth of 256GBps (gigabytes per second), which is two times faster than its predecessor, HBM. A new NVLink interface can transfer data at 160Gbps (bits per second), which is five times faster than PCI-Express. However, questions remain on how servers will fit with NVLink. IBM has said its Power architecture will support NVLink, but servers with Intel chips use PCI-Express to hook up GPUs to motherboards. At the conference, however, Nvidia showed a supercomputer called the DGX-1 running on Intel Xeon chips with the Tesla P100 GPU.
