I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore," says Disco Elysium. "Want to be a minotaur then?" says Sovereign Syndicate. As our associate editor Tyler Colp recently put it, the fate of Disco Elysium 2 is uncertain, but other games might make up for it. One such potential plug for the Disco-shaped hole in our hearts is Sovereign Syndicate, a CRPG set in an alternate Victorian London. You can tell it's an alternate reality because the menu screen shows it's got zeppelins, as all alternate realities are required to have by law. The minotaur's a bit of a giveaway as well. While the final version of Sovereign Syndicate will have three player-characters to choose from—Clara the corsair, Otto the automaton, and Atticus the minotaur—the current demo is restricted to the minotaur. An alcoholic in a top hat, Atticus Daley is a small-time illusionist and big-time loser who begins the game in extremely Disco Elysium fashion by waking up from a bender with a head full of voices and a gut full of bad booze. The similarities extend to the interface, which scrolls dialogue down the right-hand side of the screen as abilities like Wit and Spryness offer their opinions, each illustrated with a stark portrait. One difference is the addition of an external voice called the Crone, who the other chatterers are upset to find cohabiting your skull. The first quest in my journal is to figure out who she is and what she's up to. More pressing matters emerge in the shape of the masked stranger who wakes me up, insists we have business, then waits for me to pull myself together. This opening scene involves meandering around a grubby London street, examining discarded junk. From a newspaper and a poster I pick up a couple more quests, one to find some missing orphans, the other a mysterious "courtesan killer". From the other garbage I pick up my handy sword cane, and some gears and cogs I'll be able to sell later, immediately reminding me of all those bottles I recycled in Martinaise. One exit from this street is blocked by an electrified fence, beyond which is the Werewolf Containment Zone. I can't remember the last time three words made my imagination feel so fizzy, but tragically the Werewolf Containment Zone is beyond the scope of this demo. Instead, we move on to the Red Lotus, an opium den where I'm a regular customer. Things can go a couple of different ways here, depending on whether I cast an illusion to make myself look a little more human, or stay bull-shaped and force a confrontation with the bigoted centaur behind the front bar. Attempting skill checks, like the one to cast an illusion, costs Nerve. That's a resource lost whether you pass or fail, based not on dice, but drawing tarot cards face down then choosing one to flip. Each of the four suits relates to one of your four abilities, and while the rules aren't clearly explained, I muddle through just fine. Picking dialogue responses and making decisions flagged with abilities gives you points in the bodily humor(opens in new tab) linked to each one. Animal Instinct is yellow bile for instance, while Self Discipline is phlegm. They're the equivalent of experience points, with every 10 letting you choose to either increase that ability by a point, increase one of the skills related to it by three points, or take a card from the major arcana that has some kind of special bonus. One major arcana card I earn highlights whichever facedown card I draw during a skill check has the lowest number, while another gives me back three Nerve points every time I flip a face card. It's a flavorful idea, as is the character sheet styled after a phrenology exam—though given my bull's head, it also looks kind of like a diagram for cuts of meat. Successfully hiding my horns makes the next interaction easy, but on a replay I try dealing with this bouncer the hard way. Confrontations are shown as comic strips, each panel a separate step, whether it's an attempt to bribe your way out of trouble or rapping someone on the chin with the pommel of your cane-sword. The black-and-white pictures are another flavorful touch, like old-timey newspaper illustrations or some of Kevin O'Neill's art for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. These blow-by-blow comics get in the way of the story less than another combat system full of range penalties and movement modifiers would. Sovereign Syndicate's demo covers a few more interactions inside the Red Lotus, then wraps up. It's clearly got a long way to go, with a suggested release window of "holiday 2024(opens in new tab)." Right now there's no way to move the camera, and the ending's pretty abrupt. It remains pretty high on my list of anticipated games, not out of any particular interest in steampunk—never a big fan of Arcanum, I'm afraid—but because I'd love to see more wordy, Disco-like CRPGs that emphasize story, and squeeze in characterful oddities like the Werewolf Containment Zone. The Ford Fiesta could be discontinued as early as next year because it won't get an electric successor, a report has claimed. The supermini has fallen out of favour with the British public in recent years, with buyers flocking to the rival Vauxhall Corsa – the UK’s best-selling car in 2021 – and the Ford Puma crossover. The Puma is the third-best-selling model in the UK so far this year, trailing only the Nissan Qashqai and the Corsa. Meanwhile, the Fiesta doesn't feature in the top 10 best-sellers to date, despite a recent facelift. It was speculated earlier this year that Ford earns more from Lego licensing deals than the hatchback. This trend is mirrored in Europe: according to data from Jato Dynamics, Fiesta sales by the end of August were down 45% compared with 2021 levels, at 38,911 units. Meanwhile, Puma sales were down 14% compared with the same point in 2021, at 90,893 units. In August alone, the Puma placed 12th for European sales, with 9891 examples leaving showrooms. The Fiesta failed to place in the top 50, at just 2735 units. The Fiesta could be axed as early as 2023, The Sun has reported, likely to make way for the Puma EV launching in 2024. This would bring to an end a 46-year history spanning eight generations. Autocar understands that an official announcement regarding the Fiesta’s future is imminent. Ford said in a statement: “We are accelerating our efforts to go all-in on electrification and therefore review our vehicle portfolio in line with our business strategy. We do not comment on speculation and will share more information in the coming months.” This follows June’s news that production of the larger Ford Focus will come to an end in 2025, without a direct successor tipped for production. It's instead expected to be replaced by an electric crossover – one of four new EVs due by 2024 – to sit between the Puma EV and the existing Ford Mustang Mach-E. Arriving in 2023, this model may be based on the Volkswagen ID 4 and be built at Ford’s new state-of-the-art EV manufacturing centre in Cologne, Germany. A similar model, expected to be a coupé-bodied sports SUV based on the Volkswagen ID 5, will follow the year after. Ford of Europe boss Stuart Rowley said in March: “Let me assure you these products will absolutely look like Fords, drive like Fords and the experiences that we provide will give customers unique purchase and ownership experiences.” The company expects to sell some 600,000 EVs annually by 2026 under its Ford Model E division, which operates separately from its ICE car and commercial vehicle divisions (Ford Blue and Ford Pro, respectively). Earlier in the day, BBC pundit Alan Shearer said the officials "have been awful for a long time now. The people running VAR don't seem to be good enough" after Newcastle were refused a penalty in their 4-0 defeat by Manchester City. And the theme continued at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the final Premier League game before Christmas. "I have no idea what his problem is with me," said Reds boss Jurgen Klopp about referee Paul Tierney, who he approached with some angry words at full-time. "That is two wrong decisions from him and one right - all three against us." The angry German added he had wondered if there was anybody in the video assistant referee office before Andy Robertson was sent off. "This red card you can give, but is there proof that the VAR was there today because before that we thought he might not be in his office because of the two other situations." The RSPCA has expanded its food bank partnership to cover nearly the whole of Lancashire as well as new plans to include parts of Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside. In November (2020) Deputy Chief Inspector Alison Fletcher, who works in Lancashire, decided to link-up with food banks in the area to provide them with pet food for owners who were struggling to make ends meet. Starting with five areas across Lancashire, the scheme now includes 11 food banks covering almost the whole of the county. Alison said: “We are absolutely thrilled with how well this project is going and how responsive the food banks have been in helping provide people with pet food. We also hope to expand and incorporate Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside in the project very soon! “We know just how important our pets are to us. They really do become part of the family but sadly, since the start of the coronavirus pandemic we are seeing more families being unable to afford to provide for their pets. "Many people are experiencing tough times at the moment and the last thing we want is for a loving owner to have to give up their companion and real source of comfort, so we set up this scheme in the hope that we could provide as much pet food as possible and keep families and their pets together.” Jason Barbour, from Accrington in Lancashire, uses the Maundy Relief Foodbank in Accrington. He has a two-year-old crossbreed dog called Captain Jack and the food bank means he can provide food for his much-loved dog as well as himself. Jason Barbour with Captain Jack Jason said: “When I got Captain Jack as a two-month-old puppy, I only expected him to grow to the size of a staffy. He has actually grown to double that size which means he needs double the amount of expected food. "He’s my life and my main source of support - I couldn’t imagine life without him as he is always by my side 24/7. "If the food bank couldn’t support us with pet food, I could never give him up. I always would have found a way, even if that meant not eating myself. I’m not the sort of person to give him away. He’s everything to me. “He is my reason to get up in the morning. I just wouldn't be me without him, he is my family and my comfort. He has got me through lockdown and Covid. We just take care of each other.” Jason, who has now used the food bank for the last five years added: “The team at Maundy Relief are fantastic people. They do everything they can for you. They are a lifeline to so many people and I can't thank them and the RSPCA enough for the assistance they offer to me and Captain Jack.” Over the last few months, the RSPCA has been able to donate 3,500kg of pet food to food banks in Lancashire, helping people like Jason, and dogs like Captain Jack. Pet food brand Purina has donated six pallets of cat food to the project meaning Alison and her colleagues have been able to provide even more pet food for those who need it.
