The market launch of the AMD Ryzen 9000 processors has not been the best, showing worse performance than initially expected. In addition, high-end motherboards for these new processors will not arrive until September. The manufacturer is also announcing that the B850 and B840 chipset motherboards, which will be cheaper, will not arrive until 2025.

For the new Ryzen 9000 there are no new motherboards, they can be mounted on the current ones intended for the Ryzen 7000. The reason is that they share the same socket and the new AMD CPUs, as a great improvement, only add support for USB4.

During the presentation of AMD's new chips, the company already said that the X870E and X870 motherboards would arrive in September. The big news about these motherboards is the support for USB4, which is the big update for these processors.

Motherboards with B850 and B840 chipsets will arrive in 2025
Regarding the new motherboards with the new AMD chipsets, there is not much data at the moment. These new drivers are focused on mid-range motherboards, as usual.

The B850 chispet will be the main mid-range solution on the market. It maintains support for overclocking the processor and RAM, just like the next X870E. The difference comes in terms of connectivity, which changes drastically.

For starters, the B850 will support PCIe SSD drives, but at the moment it won't necessarily support PCIe 5.0 graphics cards. Initially, it offers a PCIe 4.0 x16 configuration that can be split into two x8s. Apparently, the SSD's PCIe 5.0 lines could be rerouted to the graphics card, something that possibly no manufacturer uses.

Boards with the B850 chipset lose USB4 connectivity, now supporting connectivity up to USB 3.2 @ 20 Gbps. Initially, everything indicates that it will maintain Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, although it will depend on the manufacturer to exploit it or not.

Additionally, the B840 chipset is being prepared, which will be a very reduced version focused on clone models. This version has some really simple specifications, making it a pretty big trip down memory lane.

It only supports PCIe 3.0 lines, no more modern versions of this interface, supporting only one graphics card in x16 configuration and cannot be divided into a double x8 configuration. Connectivity is limited to a maximum of two USB 3.2 @ 20 Gbps, something that possibly no manufacturer uses. Overclocking capability is limited exclusively to memory.

We have no evidence, at the moment, of a new low-end chipset, so the A620 would remain. It is the most basic model, lacking support for overclocking the CPU and RAM. In addition, it limits the supported processors to a TDP of 120 watts, not supporting the X3D models. It offers PCIe 4.0 x16 connectivity for a graphics card and PCIe 4.0 for an SSD. Supports up to two USB 3.0 and two USB 3.1.

We must remember that AMD is expected to support the AM5 socket until 2027. The change will occur with the Zen 7 architecture, which will probably support DDR6 and other technologies that require changing the socket. But there is still a long way to go and it involves a lot of speculation.
