The IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services indicates that more than one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. Currently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature's 'Red List of Threatened Species', a critical indicator of the health of global biodiversity that is made up of the evaluation of numerous groups of species - including mammals, amphibians, birds, reef-building corals and conifers - indicates that of the more than 150,000 species, more than 42,100 species are threatened with extinction. Of this number, 41% are amphibians, 34% conifers, 36% reef-building corals, 27% mammals, 21% reptiles and 13% birds. Of the total species evaluated and incorporated into this list, 87,083 belong to the animal kingdom. Currently, nearly 6,000 animals are in danger of extinction.

Human action is behind the possible extinction of these animals, motivated by illegal hunting or the destruction of habitats where they live. Since 1980, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have doubled, raising average global temperatures by at least 0.7 degrees Celsius, causing climate change to affect nature not only at the ecosystem level, but also in the genetics of species. In this context, the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15) approved the creation of a global framework for ecological diversity consisting of four objectives: halting human-induced species extinction; biological diversity is used and managed sustainably and nature's contributions to people, such as ecosystem functions and services, are valued, maintained and enhanced; All benefits from the use of genetic resources and digital sequence information on genetic resources are shared fairly and equitably; and the appropriate means of implementation to fully implement the Framework are equitably accessible to all parties.

The conservation effort is also focused, paradoxically, on reducing some invasive species because of the threat they pose to some ecosystems.
