Dark Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Venezuelans attending the demonstration said they felt "joy," "excitement" and "nostalgia," but also "a lot of despair" for the desire for the end of the government of Nicolás Maduro and "leaving our country free," according to one of the participants. Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Lima and other cities in Peru on Saturday to demand "freedom" for their country and for "respect for the result" of the presidential elections of July 28, which the opposition claims was won by candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. Venezuelans, currently one of the largest communities in Peru with 1.5 million people, gathered in the Manco Capac square, in the district of La Victoria, wearing the colors of their flag in clothing, hats, makeup and hair, to sing and play traditional music. Near a platform there was a group carrying a huge Venezuelan flag and many people with signs and their printed ballots to show that - they claim - González was the winner of the elections, which according to the Venezuelan electoral body was won by the current president, Nicolás Maduro. Some of the participants were moved to tears when remembering their family, who remained in Venezuela and have not seen them for several years, but they asked them "not to let themselves be defeated by the dictatorship," as they described the Maduro "regime." The Venezuelans attending the demonstration said they felt "joy," "excitement" and "nostalgia," but also "a lot of desperation" for the desire for the Maduro government to end and "leave our country free," according to one of the participants. https://rpp.pe/lima/actualidad/venezolanos-en-peru-participaron-de-la-gran-protesta-mundial-por-la-verdad-que-rechaza-el-fraude-electoral-de-nicolas-maduro-noticia-1577431
