Dean Ambrose™ Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 There is no game in the world that has been able to arouse as many passions as Portal. Valve's brilliant creation, launched in October 2007, was a before and after for a genre such as action developments with touches of logic and puzzles, intelligence titles where you have to put more than just adrenaline to solve each phase. And now we have good news for retro Nintendo 64 lovers. Now, you may be wondering, what does Portal have to do with Nintendo 64? The Nintendo console, launched in Spain in 1996, arrived almost a decade before Gabe Newell's classic, so they should not be related, but they are. The reason? A demake that a user has been working on for some years and that has entered such an advanced phase that we can now test it on the original Japanese hardware. How's that for Portal on Nintendo 64? This is a community project, led by a user who has set out to make a completely playable version of the Valve classic. A priori we might think it's crazy, but by removing some graphical things from the original for PC, we can assure you that the concept, its fun and the main style lines can be maintained. Although everything looks more pixelated. In addition, the Nintendo 64 gamepad helps a lot, perfect for managing 3D environments since it was the first that, as standard, came with an analog stick to control cameras and perspectives within three-dimensional environments. So, as the classic would say, "hunger comes together with the desire to eat." Now, do you know how you could test it now on the original console hardware? Behold. First of all, it must be said that the creator of this Portal demake for Nintendo 64 has NOT published a functional ROM of the game, but has opted for a much more legal alternative. Or rather, bordering on illegal, because it avoids any maneuver that Valve could make to block its project. The idea that he has used is that we are the ones who create that file that we are then going to use in the console. How to create your Portal ROM for Nintendo 64? Before creating the ROM you must be able to run it within the console, and to do this you will need an Everdrive type cartridge, or similar, that is compatible with this type of files. This way, when we generate the file, we can copy it to the microSD card. If this is your case, go ahead. These are the steps you must take. Access the link below. Within the website, search on your computer for the file "portal_pak_000.vpk", which you can find within the Portal installation on Steam (indeed, you need the original game). Choose the ROM version (we recommend the latest one). Download the resulting ROM for Nintendo 64. Copy the ROM file you created to your Nintendo 64's Everdrive cartridge. Turn it on and... let's play! You could be one of the first privileged people who have been able to enjoy this timeless classic on a machine prior to its release date. https://hardzone.es/noticias/juegos/como-jugar-portal-nintendo-64-ahora-mismo/
