Router enchufado

Have you ever wondered how long a router lasts if we always have it connected to the network, as is normal, and when should we think about changing it? Well, today we are going to analyze these issues and other curious data such as its cost on the electricity bill.

It is a device that, as a general rule, we have to have plugged in 24 hours a day, unlike most electronic devices, so these questions are much more interesting and global than they may seem.

A router on, how long does it last?
I'm sure that many of you who are reading this think that they are eternal, because you don't even remember the last time they changed it, and in a way it is true, the useful life of one of these devices is very long, however, Different considerations must be taken to try to ensure that they always work in the best way and prevent them from being damaged.

The first thing we have to take into account is the place where we place it, always trying to make it as free and cool as possible, that is, not placing it, for example, on top of the PC tower. Which will prevent overheating and excessive dirt.

On the other hand, the type of router and its age, one that we bought last year will not be the same as the one that the company gave us 10 years ago. We should think about replacing the latter, and not only because of its age and performance, but because it may not have many of the new features and features of current WiFi.

The oldest routers, and we are not talking about so many years ago, do not support more than 100 MB of speed, so you may have contracted more and it will not reach you, and it will not be the fault of the company, but of the router, so We will have to call them and tell them that we want a new one, they will provide it to us for free.

Furthermore, the signal from the antennas, as well as the speed we receive, depends on its age, not only due to wear, dirt and general performance, but also due to its characteristics, as we have mentioned.

Another point to take into account is consumption, which is much higher in older routers and can be a good peak per year. For example, a router like the one I have, from a company, from 10 years ago, consumes about 12w/h, that is... about 15 euros a year, however, another one that I acquired on my own is around 5w/h, so it would save me about 8 or 9 euros a year, so it would end up paying for itself simply with the electricity consumption.

That is, in summary, can a router last 15 years without maintenance? Yes, but that does not mean that it is good to have the same one for so long, especially if it is not purchased, since it will not cost us anything to call, say that it is slow and that it gets too hot, and they offer us a new one. For one of the things that they still don't charge us for...

So nothing, you already know, and if you want something even better, on Amazon there are some very interesting offers for routers that will last you for many years with the best possible performance, so if you don't mind spending something... it's another option. In addition, you will get a much greater range than the free ones, which tend to be quite cheap, or at least in most companies.
