Pines de un procesador

There are times when we may think that some component of our PC may be too large, since there are times when the sizes of certain parts seem excessive, which is why we always seek to reduce the size as much as possible to save space and materials. . But it seems that in China they don't think like that and they have just presented a processor that we can only classify as giant.

Although this is true most of the time, there will always be those who want to take things to the extreme, why don't we make the largest and most powerful processor that exists? It seems to be the question they have asked themselves in China, and apparently, they have achieved it with a processor the size of a wafer, that is, a chip that can fit (literally) 16 normal processors.

A giant processor, was it necessary?
Not all advances made at a technological level have to be useful or necessary, mainly because many times, these types of projects are carried out to check what the current limitations we have when creating new things are.

In the end, there is nothing that is created that does not have a lot of tests and failures behind it, since learning from the mistakes made is what keeps us moving forward.

Why is it so big?
The size is mainly due to how it is designed, well and because it has 256 cores according to its creators, although certainly, this number of cores is quite low compared to the capacities that this chip can support. And you may wonder, how can 256 cores be few?

Well, once you understand what its creators are referring to, it is normal, since they claim that this processor can support a maximum of 1,600 cores. Seeing this amount, it seems that the number 256 mentioned above is really small in comparison.

But the fact that the number is small does not mean that it is not powerful, since we are talking about 16 times the number of cores that a normal processor for a desktop PC has, although obviously this processor has not been created for that purpose, but to be used in servers.

How is it possible?
Really, if we wanted to know an exact answer on how this monstrosity could be created, we would have to be inside the project to know all the necessary data, since this is not the case, we have to settle for knowing that it is really a chip that combines several chiplets, each of them has 16 RISC-V cores. Seeing it like this it seems easier to understand how it can have 256 cores, right?

Once we have understood how the technology capable of joining these chiplets works, in order to know how it can have 1,600 cores, we only have to go further and think about a chip that joins the union of the chiplets that in turn join the cores. each other... It ends up being complicated to understand if we try to summarize it, honestly.

What is it for?
Although we can ask ourselves this question, the answer is not so complicated if we think about all the development that this technology has behind it, simply because what it seeks is to be the most powerful processor (or combination of processors) that exists, since In the end all projects related to this type of component are based on that premise.

Mainly, the use given to these projects is usually always related to CPD, since we are always looking for a way to make absolutely everything we do faster and faster. In general terms, this would imply that those data processing centers that incorporate this technology can become the vanguard in the IT sector.
