In the San Bernardino neighborhood, located in the town of Bosa, in Bogotá, a family had a crab-eating fox as a pet, a wild species that lives in the eastern hills.

After receiving complaints from some neighbors, the Environment Secretariat and the Carabineros and Protection of Biodiversity and Animal Abuse groups of the National Police carried out an operation to recover the animal.

The officials who came to verify the condition of the fox assured that the animal had a high degree of taming. Likewise, the biologists who reviewed it managed to determine that it belongs to the crab-eating fox species (Cerdocyon thous), it has a weight of 1.8 kilograms, with an acceptable body condition and no apparent injuries.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Environment, Carolina Urrutia, stated that "from the Ministry of the Environment we want to remind you that our fauna will always be better off free and at home."

She also called on citizens to "refrain from extracting wild animals from their natural habitat, let us not feed the trafficking chains and the suffering of species. Wild animals are always better off free, in their ecosystems," said Urrutia. .

Urrutia also pointed out that because the animal has a high degree of habituation, the process will be much longer for the fox to recover its abilities and subsequently be released.

The family that had the animal in their possession received a summons from the Police, while the Ministry of the Environment will begin the environmental sanctioning process in accordance with Law 1333 of 2009.

According to the Penal Code, hunting, transportation, commercialization and illegal possession of wildlife are practices that are classified as an environmental crime. In that sense, penalties "between 48 and 108 months in prison are contemplated for those who appropriate, extract, exploit, maintain or take advantage of wild animals in the national territory," as explained by the Environment Secretariat in its statement.
