The Republic of Korea's Defense Acquisition Agency (DAPA) intends to put more effort into intercepting enemy air threats. The agency is investing in the development of advanced anti-missile systems.

The country's Defense Projects Promotion Committee (DPPC) has approved funding for the development of the L-SAM II long-range surface-to-air missile. The project will receive funding of $2.02 billion and development will last from 2024 to 2035.

The South Korean Defense Development Agency (ADD) will develop the L-SAM II in collaboration with LIG Nex1, a local aerospace manufacturer. The new interceptor will be primarily intended to destroy North Korea's intercontinental and hypersonic ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

In the case of ICBMs, it will be the new Hwaseong-18 solid propellant missile. The L-SAM II will be able to destroy aerial threats at altitudes between 40 km and 100 km. The new interceptor has a maximum launch range of 150 km.

The Republic of Korea is also investing in the development of the M-SAM Block III. The DPPC has approved a financing of 2,110 million dollars for the period 2024-2034. The medium-range missile interceptor will be an advanced version of the M-SAM Block II, with improved interception and lock-on characteristics to effectively respond to North Korean missiles.
