The latest from Ducati are its powerful V4 engines, but there are traditions that must remain and V2 engines are a hallmark of the Italian brand.

Ducati is special: the trellis chassis, the desmodromic distribution, the V-twin engines... have always been in the DNA of the Bologna sports cars. Progress is unstoppable in the world of competition and Italian engineers realized a few years ago that two cylinders were not enough to build a sports car capable of winning Superbike World Championships. They had also realized before that an aluminum frame with a self-supporting motor did a better job than their traditional welded steel tube chassis. Now I wonder what will happen to its exclusive desmodromic distribution? In the Multistrada V4 it has already disappeared, but it's something I can't predict and personally I would like them to continue working on it and perfecting it for many more years for their sporty... In the meantime, here's the last of a glorious lineage of sporty twins, in this case without a fairing: the Streetfighter V2.

Ducati Streetfighter V2
Ducati, after renewing its range at the top with the largest and most powerful V4 engines, began updating the next step by evolving the "Testastretta" engine to make it the current 955 cc "Superquadro" that mounts this Streetfighter and also the Panigale. V2. It is a propeller with a rather radical design, although on the other hand, Ducati's technical department has made an effort to offer an engine with a wide spectrum of users, somewhat limiting its possible maximum power but with vigorous operation at medium revs and some low that does not make the driver curse. I will explain this point a few paragraphs later.

The Streetfighter is a new 2022 model that is approved with the Euro5 regulations, the declared nominal power is 153 CV at 10,750 rpm, the same as the Panigale V2. In the cycling part, it also shares technology with its sportier sister and even with the larger displacement V4s. The frame as such does not exist, but the whole is made up of an upper aluminum structure, more or less in the shape of a box, which is anchored to the stocks. It integrates the entire pipe and steering column and also serves as a sound box for the air filter. The rear part is another structure that is bolted to the crankcase-engine and is in charge of supporting the driver and passenger seats and the single-sided swingarm of the rear suspension whose axis crosses the crankcase from side to side transversally. All this achieves a fairly compact set and a contained total weight, 178 kg empty that rises to 208 kg with a full fuel tank.

As for its components, we find a Showa BPF inverted front fork of 43 mm in diameter and 120 mm of travel, which, like the Sachs rear shock, has adjustment in all its parameters. The brakes belong to the Brembo brand, with radially anchored front calipers and a mono-block structure, with the front master cylinder also radially operated. The rear swingarm (single-sided of course) is 16mm longer than that of the Panigale V2 to achieve more poise on the straight without the action of a fairing and the final development of the transmission is slightly shorter (2 more teeth on the crown rear) to favor recovery and acceleration. Although to tell the truth its real maximum speed has surprised me, it seems that it reaches 260 km/h...

Aesthetically it is very similar to the Panigale V2 but without fairing and with a higher and flatter handlebar, it does not have the aerodynamic side “wings”, but they can be installed as an option. There is also a wide assortment of other special parts made of carbon fiber. The electronics shines at a good level, the engine has three preset driving modes that are quite different in their responses, but also allows each of its parameters to be independently regulated: traction control, engine retention, anti-wheelie control and the ABS. In this way, with a little patience and dedicating a good while to "play with the buttons", you can leave its configuration completely to your liking.

we get going
It is clear that this Streetfighter V2 is a naked with a clear sporting vocation, but it is not a crazy runaway, nor is it a device only for expert hands: it has excellent performance, but it is balanced and pleasant to drive on public roads, especially on our excursions on the roads of the mountains. In this area I have to admit that I enjoyed exciting moments because it has two things that made my life very pleasant, Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires that have an extraordinary "grip" and feel and the semi-automatic gear change on the two-way up and down gears that works with commendable speed and precision.
