The city of Cúcuta, in Norte de Santander, is facing an increase in the perception of violence and insecurity. According to the Secretary of Security of that city, although there has been a reduction in homicides, there are other crimes that have increased, such as theft.

Although it is a real concern of the inhabitants, some solutions proposed by the Municipal Council have caused controversy, receiving criticism for their overtones of xenophobia and for their applicability.

The ruling of the Inter-American Court against Colombia leaves open the discussion as to whether it was a crime against humanity or a genocide.

This is the case of the proposal of councilman Edison Ernesto Contreras, from the Todos por Cúcuta movement, who proposed building a border wall on the trails between Cúcuta and Venezuela, just like the security fence built by the United States, during the government of Donald Trump. , on the border with Mexico.

“We need the construction of a wall on the trails between Cúcuta and Venezuela. This violence is uncontrollable,” said the councilor, who also proposed installing surveillance cameras to identify groups and people who commit crimes in that area, including transnational gangs.

In addition to that, he assured that this proposal could be supported by the United States government, not only because there "they have experience in building the wall" but because they are interested in "closing the door to drugs."
