After hours of rescue efforts, the beluga trapped in the Seine River lost her life with signs of malnutrition and stress.
The rescue team had little hope for the stranded beluga whale in the Seine River. Native to subarctic waters, they are some of the most social marine mammals that exist, documents the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), "forming groups to hunt, migrate and interact with each other." Wandering on its own in the Parisian riverbed, the whale had little chance of making it out alive.

The news went around the world from the first days of August. On Monday the 7th of the month, the BBC reported that the beluga was getting hungrier, and with less and less energy than she needed to return home. At close to 800 kilos, it was unlikely that he would find enough food to survive any more days away from her family.

After being checked by authorities in the Calvados region, rescuers determined that the beluga trapped in the Seine River was in an "alarming" state of health. Malnourished, stressed and with few options to eat, the animal would most likely die soon. Even so, the French government organized rescue brigades to get her out of there.

The operation lasted at least 6 hours. Among 80 specialists, the specimen was captured in an industrial fishing net, to be able to take it to the French coast. Only then, the authorities thought, could he get back on track. The Sea Shepherd organization participated in the rescue efforts, with the intention of taking her to a saltwater pond to regain strength.

HOWEVER, ON AUGUST 11, THE PREFECTURE OF CALVADOS ANNOUNCED FROM ITS OFFICIAL TWITTER ACCOUNT THAT "DESPITE AN UNPRECEDENTED #BELUGA RESCUE OPERATION, WE ARE SAD TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF THE CETACEAN."

The authorities recognized that "the suffering of the animal was evident". The idea was to extract the animal with a fishing net, which an industrial crane would hoist out of the riverbed. At that time, in the middle of the morning, the beluga was still alive. However, at the end of the movement, the rescue team recognized her death.

Specialists think that, just like the beluga whale stranded in the Seine River, other cetaceans are losing their way back home due to the excess noise pollution that is currently in the seas.

The noise of the industrial vessels prevents them from hearing the song of their companions. Thus, bewildered and stressed, they enter the riverbeds, far from home, from their relatives and from the territory that has corresponded to them for millions of years.
