SougarLord
The number of cars manufactured in Mexico was 2.98 million units in 2021, 2% less compared to the 3.04 million vehicles produced in 2020. Mexican vehicle exports rose just 0.94% in 2021, from 2.68 million units to 2.71 million units. Domestic sales showed more positive data, increasing by 6.80% year-on-year. In 2020, just over 950,000 light vehicles were sold and in 2021 they rose to more than one million. DECEMBER FALLS As has happened in recent months, December was again a bad month for the production, export and sale of vehicles, a phenomenon largely derived from the shortage of chips and supplies at a global level. If compared to the same month a year ago, vehicle production fell by 16.51%, from about 254,000 units to about 212,000 in the last month of 2021. While exports fell by 17.31% to take only 227,465 units abroad. In addition, sales to the public in the domestic market suffered a 7.80% drop from 105,603 units in December 2020 to 97,365 in December 2021. The importance of the automotive industry lies in the fact that it represents 3.8% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) and 20.5% of the manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP), more than any other sector, according to the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA). The automotive sector was completely paralyzed during the health emergency decreed by the Government of Mexico in April and May 2020, the year in which GDP contracted 8.2%.
