S e u o n g Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 Chile voted for the extremes in the first round of the elections and the right-wing José Antonio Kast and the left-wing Gabriel Boric will contest a polarized ballot for the country's presidency. With 99.98% of the tables scrutinized in the elections held this Sunday, Kast, from the radical right, and Boric, the leftist candidate, were the ones who added the most votes and will play the presidency of the country on December 19. Kast, a 55-year-old lawyer, married and father of 9 children and who shows sympathy with the de facto government of Augusto Pinochet, added 27.91% of support, for 25.82% of Boric, a 35-year-old former student leader who seeks to be the youngest president in the history of Chile. This result constitutes the narrowest difference in the last two decades between the first two majorities in the first round. While Boric and Kast are separated by 2.09 percentage points, in the 1999 elections Ricardo Lagos had an advantage of only 0.44% over Joaquín Lavín. The liberal FrancoParisi, a candidate who did not set foot in Chile throughout the campaign, gave the surprise and was third with 12.80%. The votes of his supporters may be key in the second round to tip the balance towards Kast or Boric. Link: https://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias-america-latina-59369625
