With an 11-8 victory over Puerto Rico, the Colombian women's water polo team debuted this Tuesday at the Fina Waterpolo Challengers Cup 2021, World Development Cup, which began in the aquatic complex of the city of Barranquilla.

In Puerto Rico, which wasted a penalty while the game was still closed, Deliani Rivera, Milena Guzmán and Francés Vega scored twice each and Estefanía Ojeda and Andrea Cardona, one each.

The tournament was launched hours before the start of the competitions with the assistance of local authorities, Colombian players, as well as the delegate of the International Swimming Federation (Fina) Mónica Brochero.

It is the first time in 40 years that an event is held in Colombia with the support of Fina. It has in the male branch with the participation of the national teams of Thailand, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Colombia and in the female with Kuwait, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Colombia.

“Barranquilla has all the conditions to receive a tournament of these characteristics. The Colombian federation has done a job that deserves to have this type of event that prioritizes the sport and the city, ”said Brochero, highlighting the conditions of the aquatic complex where the competitions will take place.

She brochero indicated that for the 2027 Pan American Games to be held in Barranquilla, in terms of swimming, the city has the stage that meets all the competition conditions that are required for an event of this magnitude.

Daniel Páez, who is part of the organizing committee, indicated that for the first time the female branch participates in the contest, which is a purpose of the Fina to take this sport to all the countries of the world.
