Mindsphere. Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 ATP leader Serbian Novak Djokovic won the Wimbledon grand slam tournament for the third time in a row on Sunday. Djokovic defeated the Italian Matteo Berrettini in the final, 9th place in the world and 7th favorite, score 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, in 3 hours and 23 minutes. Djokovic, for whom it was the seventh final at Wimbledon, has won the trophy five times, in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. The Serb won his 20th grand slam trophy. Djokovic became the first tennis player in the Open Era, after Rod Laver, who won the first three grand slams of a season. In addition, he is the only one to have won major tournaments in three different areas in the same year. Djokovic started very well and took advantage of the large number of unforced errors of the Italian, leading the score to 5-2. However, Berrettini came back, saved a set ball at 5-3, and took the game in a tiebreak, where he won 4-7. Sets two and three were at the discretion of the world number one, which ensured from the beginning of each the necessary and sufficient breaks to bring the score to sets at 2-1. In the 4th set it seemed that Berrettini had the power not to give up on his own service, leading the set to a 3-3 draw. Djokovic forced on the return, however, took the break and broke away at 5-3, after which, in game 10, he capitalized on the 3rd ball of the match and implicitly the match and the tournament. For winning the final at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic will be rewarded with 1,989,000 euros and 2,000 ATP points, while Matteo Berrettini will receive 1,053,000 euros and 1,200 ATP points. Novak Djokovic wins the 20th Grand Slam tournament of his career, with which he equals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, all three now being tied in this respect. Also, the Serbian player manages to win the third Grand Prix of the season, after the Australian Open and Roland Garros and remains in the race for a great performance, to win all four Grand Prix of the season, a result that last time made by Rod Laver in 1969.
